Story of the Year
who wrote a book about his family’s experience as refugees after the Second World War.
Slattery said at the time, “People don’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to do.”
He continued to network and help newcomers get
what they need, working with host families and other organizations.
By September, Daniela Banducci was teaching weekly ESL classes at Station on the Green, where a weekly Station Café was also serving as a gathering place.
The following month, a Ukrainian night was the theme of the Creemore Coyotes home opener, collecting funds in jars.
Slattery said almost $17,400 has been raised, with $7,200 of that going to the Canada Ukraine Foundation before local families arrived. The rest of the money has all been spent and the families face ongoing living expenses, and transportation costs.
He recently got a $1,000 donation from Canadian Tire in Midland and was able to provide the families Christmas gifts and cash, which was handed out at the final ESL class of 2022.
Ukrainian War Relief fundraising efforts are ongoing. Slattery has been working with Mary Boyd and Lorna May, asking that all local donations go through the St. Luke's discretionary fund in support of Ukrainian Newcomers.
Volunteer Spotlight
This year, we shine the spotlight on SilverShoe Historical Society executive director, Janie CooperWilson, who is recognized for her commitment to raising awareness and preserving black history.
A lecturer, facilitator, and author, Cooper-Wilson is the driving force behind the restoration, documentation and re-dedication of the historical inter-racial cemetery in New Lowell. She founded the Silvershoe Historical Society, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Cooper-Wilson has spent that time working with a group of volunteers to restore Bethel Union Pioneer Cemetery, and she was successful in having it designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, for its cultural heritage and historical significance. For her next project, SilverShoe Historical Society began work at the Old Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery
(also known as the Sunnidale Pioneer Cemetery), on Highway 26.
“This is the first established cemetery in Clearview… so it’s very important,” Cooper-Wilson told The Echo in 2018. “It’s the first one people see when they are coming in on Highway 26.”
Cooper-Wilson is a descendant of the first resident of The SilverShoe Settlement, in Old Sunnidale Township, and has researched and documented the lives of the original Freedom Seekers and settlers in the region. For 25 years, a group of volunteers has been caring for the cemetery, which she originally found overgrown and vandalized. The Silvershoe Historical Society has hosted an Annual Memorial Candlelight Service, and welcomes visitors to the sacred space.
In 2022, in celebration of the milestone, the society hosted a blockbuster celebration featuring musicians, entertainers and a performance of the The Spirit of Harriet Tubman, as portrayed by Leslie McCurdy.
Cooper Wilson is a director with the Ontario Historical Society (OHS) and has been recognized for her work, winning several awards such as the
OHS Carnochan Award (2012), the OMAH Historic Reconstruction Award (2015), and the Ontario Black History Society’s Harriet Tubman Award (2018). In September 2018, she was inducted as one of Canada’s 100 Accomplished Black Women.
