“There’s all kinds of four wheelers in Creemore and they need access to get out of Creemore without having to load them.” In August, Clearview’s CAO John Ferguson reported to council that the OPP responded to a total of 20 complaints in the past year, of which 17 were classified as non-criminal and two resulted in charges (one was classified as “other” with the outcome determined at the discretion of the OPP).Clearview’s bylaw enforcement department responded to a total of six complaints in the past year, including driving over the end of someone’s driveway, driving on street late at night, parking on front lawns, and driving in the township parks. “Overall, it would be better if there were no incidents whatsoever. With that said the bylaw and OPP recorded infractions have been relatively low in number,” reported Ferguson. Lamers said it's mostly about trail access but people are looking to use their four-wheelers to shop in town. “It’s time to open it up to the public so that everyone in Clearview has access to the trails, not excluding the ones who are in town that are avid ATV riders,” said Lamers. “It’s time to carry it on and get the people what they want.” Lamers said he is expecting a good debate and a close decision on Sept. 12. Applications have opened for the 2023 community assistance grants available from Clearview Township. Funding may be available to nonprofit community organizations through application to council. Applicants will be considered on merit and funding is notEachguaranteed.organization is required to complete an application form, available at Clearview.ca. Applications must be submitted electronically by Oct. 31.

by Trina Berlo With relatively few off-road vehicle infractions reported during the past two years, Councillor John Lamers said it is time to bring the issue of access back to the council table. Lamers brought forward a notice of motion on August 22 indicating that he would be seeking council support to amend the existing ATV bylaw at the Sept. 12 meeting. Lamers said he has been hearing from residents of Creemore and Dunedin who want ATV restrictions lifted in order to gain access to trails and core services.

The ATV bylaw, passed in 2020, restricts off-road vehicles from all roads and road allowances south of County Road 9 to Township of Mulmur and all roads and road allowances west of County Road 42 and County Road 142.Lamers is hoping to open access east or north of Creemore. ATVs are not allowed on county roads but access to municipal roads is at the discretion of municipal politicians. Lamers explained that he is bringing the amendment forward on behalf of people who don’t want to have to trailer their ATVs, and leave vehicles parked at access points. He said he has heard from a couple dozen people over the past year or so. “It’s been two years since we passed the bylaw and we haven’t had any problems in Creemore,” said Lamers.

Greg Young, President, CARA.

Wanda (Gordon) McDermid (left) and Brenda (Freethy) Harvey recently made a trip down memory lane, visiting Creemore and the school where they first met in kindergarten in 1955, back when the boys and girls used separate entrances. Submitted by Colleen Stamp.

ItEditor:isbeyond comprehension why Councillor Lamers of New Lowell at the end of his tenure would risk his good legacy – as well as council’s – by re-introducing a motion in the final stages of a lame duck council to allow ATVs yet again in Creemore and Dunedin. This issue has bitterly divided the community and has been settled. If council wishes to preserve its integrity and our respect, the motion must be withdrawn or dismissed. It has been a challenging time for all of us these past two years. There are larger issues that we need to constructively address together. We look forward to meeting the new council to address these.

The County of Simcoe has opened the nomination period for the 10th Annual Newcomer Recognition Awards. The deadline to recognize deserving community champions is Sept. 23. Over the past nine years, the Simcoe County Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) has hosted this annual celebration, both virtually and in person, to recognize outstanding community leaders and champions who take decisive action to enhance the lives of newcomers in Simcoe County. In honour of the 10th annual Newcomer Recognition Awards, plans are underway to return to an in-person celebration in late fall, though we will continue to monitor and follow all public health guidelines. Special thank you to our Gold Sponsor Honda of Canada Manufacturing for their tremendous support of this event. Application submissions should be returned via fax to 705-725-9539, or email to sclip@simcoe.ca. Individuals and/or organizations/businesses can be nominated for the following categories: community champion, immigrant artist, immigrant entrepreneur, immigrant mentor, service excellence, immigrant youth, youth community champion, ethno-cultural group, culturally diverse workforce (organization/ business), welcoming work environment (organization/ business), marketing and outreach (organization/ business), and multiculturalism through education (educator/school).Formoreinformation, or to download an application package, visit recognition-awards.www.simcoe.ca/dpt/ccs/lip/newcomer-

“Following the accident several score of citizens gathered at the scene of the wrecked car and found to their amazement that the occupants of the vehicle were under the influence of liquor. Chief Wilson placed the two men under arrest and with the aid of some special assistants had the pair removed to the lockup commandeering Leonard agar’s flat rack as a patrol wagon. “On arrival at the lockup, which to put it mildly, is anything but a humane place to contain an animal, let alone a human being, a fire was started in the crude box stove, which the corridor afforded. The detachment of the special constables was honourably discharged leaving prisoners access to the corridor and the stove. Half an hour later some curious boys who were hovering around the jail, were startled to see the old heating stove coming through a cell window in about a hundred pieces, followed by pieces of burned wood, ashes, fire, smoke, etc. It is said that an obstructed chimney had caused the stove to smoke so badly the prisoners had to dispose of the stove to avoid suffocation. Chief Wilson was soon on the scene with the prisoners’ supper and succeeded in setting up another stove.” The new form of transportation in 1928 often caused a good many problems as the next story will tell. “A car dealer in Creemore had business in Barrie and borrowed an Essex coupe from a friend to make the journey down the Mad River. East of Brentwood the coupe suddenly slowed down to a dead stop. Well experienced with cars, the driver got down and sought the trouble. The ignition looked good and so did the carburetor. In fact nothing that he could see was wrong, and he started to crank until he sat down and wiped his brow. Then remembering the fable of King Bruce and the spider he got up and cranked some“Drivingmore. from Creemore to Barrie another motorist was surprised to find on the highway a gas tank of an Essex car. Not having any idea which route the loser had taken he wisely set it to one side and drove on. Four miles on, a lone driver was seen vigorously cranking a car. On coming up with a dialogue, something like this took place. First man: Just as I always said, these cars are not in it when you want service. Second driver: Why, what’s the matter? First man: Well, here I am for half an hour; nothing seems wrong but the thing won’t go. Second driver: Have you gas? First man: Full tank when I left Creemore. Oh, yes, I always carry lots of gas. Second man: By the way, where is the gas tank on this car? First man: Why right here behind. By Jove, it’s not here, and in a twinkling he realized why the car wouldn’t go. “The final scene has driver number two playing the part of the Good Samaritan. After returning four miles for the lost tank he then pulled the unfortunate motorist 10 miles to Barrie where necessary repairs were made.”

Looking back at our village’s history we expect to learn about churches, schools and about municipal affairs, but it is the little incidents that mark our individuality. Here are but a few of Creemore’s little ‘heartbeats’ captured for posterity in print in old Creemore Star newspapers. Delivering cream to the local creamery (now the Mad River Pottery) was a weekly occurrence. After the cream was processed into butter, the by-product, buttermilk, was stored in tank where pig owners could get containers full to feed to their porkers. One weekend in 1926, however, the animals had to go without.

“On Saturday afternoon the big buttermilk tank at the rear of the creamery crashed to the ground and spilled the contents near and far. The cause of the collapse was a faulty platform about eight feet high which supported the big tank. On account of the local planing factory being closed Mr. Kolb, the owner, had to take the big tank the Collingwood and have a new bottom fitted in which was the extent of the damage. Needless to say, some pigs around Creemore went thirsty over the weekend.” Another exciting incident happened in 1926, at the creamery again. At one time there was a balcony over the front entrance supported by two pillars. “A scene was suddenly created on Main Street Saturday evening, when a large touring car, intending to make the turn toward Avening, skidded on the ice and the driver lost control. The car shot under the balcony which was supported by two pillars. Both front wheels were broken off the car but none of the occupants were hurt. How the car went between the pillars and the brick wall of the creamery remains a mystery, as measurements show that it would take an expert, driving carefully to accomplish it.

discovercle by Trina Berlo Ayrlie MacEachern has created an opportunity for people to send best wishes to Claire Adams , who was injured in a collision on August 8. MacEachern has left paper hearts at Lagom 172 (where Adams was working), which she will stitch together to make a garland. People of all ages are invited to write a message, a word or a doodle on the hearts make from upcycled watercolour paper that is blank on one side and was been painted by children on the other decades ago. Adams was extracted from her vehicle after a collision at County Road 91 and Fairgrounds Road, and was airlifted to hospital. She is now in rehab and is improving daily.MacEachern said she wanted to do something to support Adams and her family, and because she is crafty and loves the heart symbol, she came up with this idea. “It’s about spreading the love, and building the prayers,” said MacEachern. “Even though most of us can’t be with Claire, or see her, we can have her in our prayers and in our thoughts.”

The hearts will be available through next week.

BIA is welcoming the change of seasons with an Autumn Equinox celebration on Saturday, Sept. 17. BIA president Laurie Severn said the equinox is a time to celebrate the harvest and mark the change of season as we say farewell to summer and welcome the fall. The BIA is hosting a free concert and traditional country dance at the newly opened Creemore Village Green. The event begins at 5 p.m. It will start off with a hoedown with caller Lorraine Sutton and musicians, at 5:30 p.m. Sutton teaches each traditional dance – squares, circles, and contras – to the dancers before they dance to the music. No previous country dance experience is required. Sutton says, knowing your left hand from your right hand and the ability to count to eight are all that is required. At 7:30 p.m., indie folk group Great Lake Swimmers, led by songwriter/ vocalist Tony Dekker , will take to the Village Green stage. Great Lake Swimmers have earned two Juno Award nominations, have been shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Prize, and won a Canadian Indie Award for Favourite Folk/Roots Artist/Group. Severn said the decision was made to avoid street closures for this event, based on feedback from BIA members and the availability of the park. Everyone is welcome. The bar will be open (cash and tap) and a wristband policy will be in effect. ushers in autumn with Equinox party
