Creemore Padres oust Cubs to win junior title by Scott Anderson In what could be described as a Cinderella story, the Creemore Padres of the North Dufferin Baseball League claimed the junior division championship title Aug. 23 with an 11-10 win in Game 4 over the Mansfield Cubs. Creemore finished last in an eightteam division managing only one win during the regular season. Come playoffs, they went on to knock out the first place Caledon Nationals in the first round and the second place Orillia Royals in the second round. Mansfield finished the season in third place and dispatched the sixth place Barrie Baycats and fifth place Georgina Bulldogs in the first two rounds of the postseason.Thetwo teams started the championship series last week with Creemore taking an early 2-0 lead winning 7-3 and 3-0. Not to go quietly, the Cubs managed an 11-6 win in Game 3. The teams met on Aug. 22 for Game 4 but the contest was scrubbed after the fourth inning due to rain, moving the game from Creemore to Mansfield the next day. In what was a tight ball game, both Creemore and Mansfield scored four runs in the first inning before Creemore took the lead in the second with two more. One more run in the third and four in the fourth capped the runs at 11 for the Meanwhile,Padres. the Cubs plated a single run in the second and third frames, clawed back with another three in the fourth and desperately tried to tie or take the lead in the fifth inning when they scored one run with runners in scoring position. After five innings of play the game was called due to darkness ending the series in favour of the Creemore team.

Trina trina@creemore.comBerlo PUBLISHER

You’ll note this space isn’t called Arrell-Lazier Park, or Stuart and Tony’s Green Space, or the Creemore Community Foundation Green. In this age where money buys naming rights, Stuart and Tony opted instead for philanthropy in its truest sense. And for that, we thank both of these gentlemen.

Park a huge success

Creemore Community Foundation founders Stuart Lazier and Tony Arrell led the guest speakers thanking partners and contributors who helped bring to being the community connector, and landmark – TD Bank, Creemore Horticultural Society, the design team and consultant that led the community consultation process, Township of Clearview council, and the BIA. Evidence of large and small contributions from partners can be seen throughout the park and enhanced the opening celebration. The park is a result of input and collaboration, for example the input of long-time locals into the historical markers, the signage designed by Shane Durnford Studios, the restoration of the fountain, and the preservation of the beloved climbing tree. The old elements have been incorporated into the new ones to create a town centrepiece.

The Creemore library branch is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, as part of the Creemore Farmers' Market anniversary celebrations on Sept, 3. In 1992, council and members of the fundraising committee, along with others involved held a ground-breaking ceremony.

The opening ceremony on Saturday was attended by up to 500 people eager to see the new space and celebrate the important community milestone.

He thanked all those involved in the evolution of the project and 300 donors who raised $4 million, noting that there are still opportunities to donate. They noted it took four years to bring the project to fruition, from early talks with TD Bank to negotiate the donation of the land, to rigorous public input, pandemic delays, and all the detail work that went on behind the Congratulationsscenes.to all involved – those who made donations big and small, and everyone who supported Lazier and Arrell in their vision to gift Creemore with a new and improved public space. The stage alone is an asset to Creemore – something you wouldn’t find in most larger communities. We are very excited to see how the stage is utilized by the community in the coming years. The Creemore Village Green stage will be very active in the next while, starting with a rescheduled performance of the Sherri Jackson Band Friday afternoon, and continuing all afternoon on Saturday with programming to complement Copper Kettle Festival.Themomentum continues with Creemore Village Green serving as a venue for the Creemore Festival of the Arts with a not-to-be-missed appearance by Notorious Cree at noon on Oct. 2. We know that the park will only get better with age, as the Horticultural Society begins planting its beds, as people settle in and a new generation makes memories.

OnEditor:Saturday, August 20, Creemore received two gifts. The first, and most obvious, was the grand opening of our beautiful Creemore Village Green. Four years ago this project was simply a seed of an idea. Last Saturday, the community celebrated the opening of this long-awaited, beautiful public space. The second, less obvious gift, was the gift of true philanthropy. When TD Bank closed the Creemore branch in 2018, Stuart Lazier and Tony Arrell saw a unique opportunity. Together they created the Creemore Community Foundation and worked tirelessly and selflessly to develop this legacy project for the benefit of our entire community.

St. John’s United Church in Creemore and New Lowell United Church are inviting the community to help us raise funds for these three different groups by taking part in our Mason Jar Campaigns that will run from September of 2022 through April of 2023. We welcome contributions of all sizes for our Mason Jars. Actual jars will be at the entrances of the two churches and also at the home games for the Creemore Coyotes Hockey Team. We will be keeping everyone up to date on our progress through our CNL Pastoral Charge Facebook page, where you can also donate using the information and links there starting on Sept. 1. The webpages of the two churches will provide lots of information and updates and will also have links and contacts. Members of the Mason Jar team are Tom Macham and Deb Bronee from New Lowell and Pat Steer and Mary Boyd from Creemore.OnSept. 11, we invite you to hear about Water First (waterfirst. ngo) from Dillon Koopmans, the Education Programs Manager, as we open our campaign. We couldn’t be more local in our choice of this NGO started up by John Millar and encourage you to take a wander through their impressive website and the amazing results that their collaboration in these communities has managed to date. Many of you would remember that Water First started out as Tin Roof Global and worked in Uganda in rural schools to educate, empower, and put in place a system for safe water from the ground up. The move back to Canada to provide safe, clean water in the north for our indigenous communities and to listen to, involve, educate and train the people of those communities to carry on and improve the systems, makes so much sense. Our doors will be open by 10 a.m. and we will begin our service at 11 a.m., with time afterward to have a snack and a drink and fellowship with Dillon and the other people who come to find out about Water First. We would also be happy to hear from you with ideas to fundraise for this group. We will introduce our second focus, Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine, on Sunday, Oct. 23 at the New Lowell church with the same time frame; we have a tentative speaker that we will announce in September, and we invite you to continue the journey with us at our second special Sunday. You are of course, welcome every Sunday. On Nov. 13, we will have our Camp Simpresca (simpresca.camp) Sunday back at the St. John’s church, again with the same times. We welcome all campers in their camp gear for a fun-filled get together! And through it all, we will work to fundraise for these three good causes, hopefully with your help and encouragement! We are also planning to have some mason jar events where people can get together and create food, do some mason jar crafts, etc., so watch for that on our Facebook Page and our twoPleasewebsites.join the Creemore Coyotes on Oct. 22 for their home opener which will be “Ukrainian War Effort” night. Contact Jim Slattery at 416605-8787 for more information or check the Creemore Coyotes website, at Wecreemorecoyotes.com.hopethatyouwillcome along with us on this journey!

• Water First is a local NGO whose mission and values are to address water challenges in indigenous communities in Canada through education and meaningful collaboration.•Ukraine: On Feb. 24, armed forces from the Russian federation began an unprovoked attack on the country of Ukraine, leading to death and destruction for the people of Ukraine, and creating a situation where we all need to step up to help in any way we can. • Camp Simpresca: In 1949, at the end of World War II, Camp Simpresca on the shores of Georgian Bay near Midland, Ontario, was opened. For 73 years, it has been operating and providing healthy camping experiences to thousands of young people. Like all camps, Simpresca is working to build again after the ravages of COVID. It is operated by Northern Waters Presbytery in the United Church of Canada. So… how are these three different areas of focus connected?

Swept by Bonnie MacPherson When Barry Burton reflects on his eight years as deputy mayor of Clearview Township, he has much to be proud Burtonof.is set to retire at the end of this term. He originally ran for council in 2018, driven by a desire to save the Collingwood Street Bridge in Creemore from demolition. Ultimately council decided to replace the bridge but maintain the superstructure which was declared historically significant. Burton would have preferred to preserve the entire original structure but says the community seems satisfied with the compromise.Atanall-candidates meeting in the run-up to the 2018 election, Burton was asked what he intended to do for youth in the community. Having been a Scout Leader for 25 years, he was well aware of challenges facing youth, so together with Councillor Robert Walker he pitched council on the creation of a youthBurtoncentre.envisioned a safe, drug-free, bully-free environment for youth 1218 that would offer positive social interactions and opportunities for personal development. The Clearview Youth Centre opened in Stayner in 2016 and has since been recognized as one of the best youth centres in the province. Affordable housing is another favourite cause. Burton says many seniors are forced to leave our area because of the lack of suitable housing, and notes that economic development is being hampered. Many industries that might consider Clearview as a potential location are dissuaded by the lack of affordable, attainable housing for employees. He encouraged Clearview council to earmark half a million dollars per year for three years for a reserve fund to create affordable housing for seniors, reasoning that if the township put together $1,500,000 they could push the County of Simcoe for matching funds and begin to address the housing crisis in a meaningful way. Instead, council voted to put $250,000 per year into reserves, and that amount was further reduced to $150,000 per year during the pandemic. Meanwhile, County council budgeted $2 million for an affordable housing project that was awarded to Victoria Harbour. Burton says in addition to serving as deputy mayor of Clearview, his time as deputy warden of Simcoe County and the county representative on the Niagara Escarpment Commission gave him a much broader understanding of issues affecting neighbouring municipalities.

Burton reflects on political career

Burton cites the fact that a proposed Clearview Aviation Business Park has been placed on the back burner as a major disappointment. He feels it would have moved Clearview way ahead in terms of economic development and while the concept is not dead it will need strong support from a future council if the dream is ever to be realized.Burton ran his own lighting company and says the time he devoted to township and county business cost him money. He recently asked township council for a significant boost in base pay for the mayor and deputy mayor starting in the next term. That request did not get support from the majority of councillors. Even so, Burton says, it was a genuine pleasure to serve the community and he feels fortunate to have forged many great friendships along the way. In retirement, Burton and his wife will be moving to their waterfront property in Magnetawan. He’s looking forward to time with family, travel to Scotland and England, and restoring another antique boat. Most of all, he says he’s looking forward to waking up in the morning and not having to consult his calendar to see which meetings he must attend.
