The market is open every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Station on the Green parking lot, with a variety of vendors who grow it, bake it or make it.

Music, Market and Park It is back in Stayner from June 2 to August 25, located in the parking lot of the Station Park and Tourism Information Centre.

The Thursday evening event includes farmers, producers, wineries, cideries, breweries, craft distilleries, and food vendors.

There is a weekly classic car show, children’s activities and the licensed bar hosted by the Stayner Kinsmen Club.

The market is open from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and there is weekly live music presented by the Stayner and District Kinsmen Club from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Station Park Gazebo.

Performances include classic rock, country, southern rock and an Elvis tribute artist, with blues band Not Ottawa closing the season on August 25.

The Brix plan approved, cleared for building

by Trina Berlo The Brix has received draft plan approval and is clear to start building.

The high density three-storey 72unit condo development is at the corner of Edward and Mary streets. It has been on the books since 2005 and has been the subject of an OMB hearing and layers of planning approvals. More recently, the project was taken over

by MDM Developments, although it was originally developed by Creemore resident Doug MacIntosh.

Originally planned as a threebuilding development, all units will now be in one single building.

Mike Rawn, Director of Public Works for Clearview Townhsip, said there is enough sewage capacity to build the 72 units, in addition to

some of the other small projects in Creemore “It’s really nice to see something finally going to happen with that piece of property,” said Councillor Robert Walker, giving kudos to all involved.

With site plan approval and adequate sanitary, water and stormwater services and facilities, and roads available to service the development, council also agreed to lift the hold so the project could proceed.

The township will also receive cash-in-lieu for work to be completed by the township at a later date but at the cost of the developer, so that other improvements can be made at the same time, including utilities along with other urbanization and roadworks on Mary Street.

High construction costs put projects over budget

by Trina Berlo Construction of the New Lowell Fire and Public Works Building will go ahead after the project was reworked to shave almost $2 million from the tender price to get it to fit the budget.

Deputy director of public works Dan Perreault told council at its May 30 meeting that by reducing the height of the building and making other adjustments, savings were found due to the cost of building materials, causing the price to fall from $5,358,900 to $3,495,000.

Inflation and the cost of building materials continues to result in higher than expected costs.

Councillor Phyllis Dineen had asked staff to get a price estimate for a pavilion at Nottawa ball park.

The proposed 19.7 by 7.6 metre structure would include washroom facilities, a concession stand area and an open pavilion/ picnic style area.

The feasibility study for the pavilion and septic system had a grand total of $826,782.

“It is recommended that council not proceed with the construction of a new pavilion at the Nottawa Ball Park at this time and file the report for future endeavours. There may be possible partnerships to explore with developers as well as other fundraising

initiatives that can be materialized in the future,” reported Terry Vachon, general manager of parks, culture and recreation.

Council agreed to put the expenditure on hold.

“Keep it handy and hope it doesn’t collect a lot of dust,” said Mayor Doug Measures.

Inflation had its pros and cons when it comes to the Stayner Library Landscaping projects.

Council has approved a tender for $288,315.99 to complete landscaping at the new Stayner branch that will not only green up the property but will address drainage issues, and create accessible walkways, and make outdoor programming areas usable.

Council declined a tender submission in September when it came in at $257,664, significantly higher than the $85,000 originally budgeted for the project.

Council had referred the tender back to staff to reissue in the spring of 2022, hoping for multiple bids and a lower cost. That didn’t happen.

Vachon reminded council that the old Stayner branch building on Huron Street sold for more than expected creating a reserve of more than $400,000 which is to be applied to the cost of the landscaping and drainage work.

With that, the tender was approved.

Melancthon Township celebrates 169th anniversary with annual park party Historically, Melancthon Township has celebrated its anniversary with a party at the Horning’s Mills Community Park every June.

Community and beyond gathered for a fun late afternoon event that brought hundreds to the hamlet’s recreation park for a barbecue, musical performances, bouncy castles, kids’ games and first responders.

The evening was finalized with a spectacular fireworks display.

Then came the pandemic.

On Saturday June 25, the community will gather again at the park to celebrate the community. Start the day at the Horning’s Mills Community Hall (Main St. and River Rd.) with a vendors’ market that will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Activities will then shift to the

Horning’s Mills Park (15th Sideroad and Main Street), starting at 3 p.m.

These activities will include a First Responder Challenge that will see firefighters, paramedics and others compete against each other in a tugof-war and obstacle course.

A bouncy castle will entertain the kiddies, as well as an activity area, games, and the park playground.

Firefighters will host a barbecue of yummy fare which includes hamburgers (meat and vegan), hotdogs, sausages and ice cream. All proceeds go to the fire halls.

Our musical performance of the evening will be by community favourite, Gary Heaslip and band.

A professional fireworks show is planned for sunset. It is recommended to bring chairs and blankets.

Dufferin OPP launch Project Safe Trade Dufferin OPP has launched Project Safe Trade to create a community safety zone at the detachment parking lot to facilitate online property transactions. The program supports the public by moving online transactions away from secluded parking lots, personal residences or other areas and bringing them to a public place.

The Project Safe Trade parking spot located in the visitor parking lot of the Orangeville Detachment is available

at all times, with no appointment necessary.

The OPP does not monitor or mediate the premises or transactions.

Police urge online sellers and shoppers to heed the following advice: Meet in a busy public space; Bring a trusted friend of family member as a witness; Keep transactions during daylight hours; Do not erase emails, texts or voicemails between you and the buyer or seller.

Subscription drive continues Saturday The Echo crew will be back at the Creemore Farmers’ Market again this Saturday for our annual subscription drive. Thank you to everyone who has come by to say hello and give us words of encouragement.

It is very gratifying to hear that The Creemore Echo has and continues to be an important link to the community, especially during the lockdowns. Now that we are seeing each other in person we hope to get back to seeing smiling faces in the pages of The Echo, along with lots of events and community initiatives.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our time visiting with people at the market. It’s funny how in some ways we have just picked up where we left off, as if we didn’t miss a beat, even though it was more like a whole bar.

This will be the last week that The Echo is at the market to collect subscriptions but there are still many ways to support your local independent community newspaper.

You can always pick up a newspaper for free from your mailbox or at a number of local vendors. You can come into the office at 3 Caroline St. W. To take out or update your subscription and/or sign up for an electronic version sent out each Thursday by email.

Peter Thomson & Sons Planing Mill made baseball bats around 1935-1950. The mill was located on the south side of Francis Street, where the mini-mall is today. They produced pine sash, windows, and doors, mainly for use in local homes and Base Borden during the 1940s. It was Creemore’s largest employer at that time, with at least 12 employees, and was managed by Greg Thomson. This mill burned in 1957. The baseball bat was submitted by Colleen Stamp. Additional information is from Gerry Blackburn’s columns about Creemore in the 1940s.

Hort Society volunteers tackling bindweed Last summer, the team of Creemore Horticultural Society volunteers noticed a problem with bindweed while tending the plants removed from the former Hort Park and awaiting their move to their new home in the Village Green gardens.

Bindweed is a non-toxic invasive weed that can strangle and eventually kill other plants.

It originates from Europe and resembles Morning Glories in its vining characteristic, the shape of the pink and white flowers and the heart shaped, albeit smaller leaves.

Hort Society volunteers have spent many hours controlling this weed. To avoid further spread of the bindweed to both the new Village Green gardens and to residents’ gardens via plants purchased at the June 4 plant sale, a number of proactive measures are being taken.

The roots of any plant removed from the temporary holding beds are being washed thoroughly with water to remove the old soil and any roots from weeds that may be present before re-potting the plant in fresh, weed free soil. The plants are then stored on top of weed barrier cloth to prevent new contamination from bindweed roots that may be present in the ground.

The freshly potted pots are then inspected daily for both bindweed and to ensure that they remain healthy and well watered.

The same treatment to control bindweed is also effective to prevent the spread of the latest invasive pest; the Asian Jumping Worm which has yet to be detected in the Creemore area.

Paterson proposes permanent patio permission Multi-pronged motion addresses patios, pedestrian walkway, streetscape, and parking

by Trina Berlo Creemore area councillor Thom Paterson tabled a motion Monday addressing several issues in a motion entitled Patios, Parking and Pedestrians.

The goal of the omnibus motion is to direct staff to investigate eight action items.

Paterson is asking for a policy permitting on-street patios, or bump outs, as a permanent seasonal option for outdoor restaurant dining. The street patios were allowed during the pandemic when businesses were looking to add extra outdoor seating.

The practice has been extended for another season but Paterson is hoping it will be extended indefinitely.

Paterson said patio policies could be applied to the entire township but that Creemore lends itself to the bump outs because it is not on a major roadway.

The motion also calls for the development of a service level agreement in partnership with the Creemore BIA that leads to the improvement of the appearance and maintenance of the streetscape in the business district, and the upgrade

Councillor Thom Paterson is hoping to make them a permanent option for main street restaurants. of the pedestrian crosswalk at the Caroline and Mill Streets intersection by installing appropriate pavement markings, signage and lighting alerting oncoming vehicles of pending pedestrian traffic.

“Many of these things I am asking for are applicable certainly in Stayner,” said Paterson.

He is also looking to address parking concerns on both sides of Elizabeth Street near Gowan Park by eliminating angle parking and creating a public parking area at the Creemore Medical Centre.

He said angle parking on Elizabeth Street East has been raised as a concern by area residents for some time.

“It’s very clearly recognizing that we’ve had a problem for two or three years. The residents have been complaining in great numbers,” said Paterson. “It’s boiling over now.”

He wrote in his report to council that “these long-standing issues related to the efficient use and maintenance of the municipal streetscape have converged partly due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic and partly as a result of increased interest and efforts to attract visitor traffic to the commercial and retail district of Creemore. It is opportune to address each one of these interdependent concerns in a coordinated, comprehensive way rather than as stand alone issues.”

“As local and tourism related pedestrian traffic is increasing steadily, attention to provisions to ensure safe passage along our sidewalks and at our roadway crossings are also needed,” wrote Paterson. “In support of the efforts of our local merchants and in co-operation with the management of the BIA, effective solutions can best be found by working together to improve our local resident and visitor experience and to raise the service levels the community has come to expect.”

“If we just roll this out all at once it would just be quite a disturbance to be honest,” said Mayor Doug Measures.

“All these things are very positive steps but I think we have to be timely.”

Photographer exhibits through June Fine art photographer Heidi Leverty is returning to Creemore and unveiling her new series – Revolution.

In 2019 and 2021 Leverty expanded her reach to art enthusiasts by adding a main street, entrepreneurial element.

These personal exhibitions took her to the heartland of Simcoe Country and proved successful.

“The decision to engage – one on one – with those interested in my work proved enormously satisfying,” she said. “I loved the experience of seeing people’s reaction to my work. It’s the reason I create, to share what I see and feel.”

Her time in Creemore was extremely positive and while this season’s show will be limited to June she is excited about her latest series and looks forward to sharing the digital nostalgia it represents.

The ability to transition through mediums has been a constant for Leverty since graduating with honours in Fine Art Photography from Ontario College of Art. “My most recent artistic series spun from Covid restrictions and my desire to explore and expand the digital landscape,” said Leverty. “I started with circles and the geometrical experimentation took me round and

round until it eventually collided with a sound resonance. Memories fuelled by music of times filled with hope rolled back to me and into a visual collection I have called Revolution. The images burst with detail and colour, as the vinyl depictions pull one into a past era. The images clearly illustrate the collaboration between sight and sound.

11U Cardinals power past Baycats

Creemore Cardinals 11U’s home opener against the Newmarket Hawks is Sunday at 10 a.m. at Gowan Park.

The Cardinal bats came alive on Sunday in a double-header against the Barrie Baycats. The young squad won both games by scores of 15-4 and 16-3 and improved their record to 4-0. In Game 1, Brayden Foulds brought the fans to their feet in the second inning with a monster three-run home run over the 232’ sign in centerfield. Evan Wells and Jack Hutchison combined to strike out nine batters in the first three innings.

In Game 2, Dylan Rayburn would lead the Creemore offence going 3 for 3 including a grand slam and six RBI. Thomas Weldon was dominant on the mound striking out six consecutive batters over two innings of work.

Come out to Gowan Park this Sunday at 10 a.m. for the 11U’s home opener against the Newmarket Hawks. The first pitch will be thrown out by Dana Murphy, winner of Creemore Minor Baseball logo design contest.

Creemore 9U baseball had their home opener on Tuesday night. After a long wait, everyone was so excited to officially test out our gorgeous new diamond. Team captain Adair led the way for Creemore making four outs at first base and was player of the game. The players battled through the scorching heat and played great. Next game is against arch rival Everett is on Wednesday.

Last week, Creemore 9U had their first game of the season. Player of the game Brett Chase made several great plays at shortstop and scored Creemore’s first run of the year. Everyone played awesome and we are excited for a great season.

Qualifications and Abilities required: • Must be a current active student and be enrolled in a College or University program for Sept. 2022 • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with children effectively • Excellent reading ability • Must have reliable transportation • Ability to work in all three library branches located in Creemore, New Lowell and Stayner

Hours of work: Approximately 30 hours per week. The position includes evening and weekend shifts.

Wage: $18.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.
