A Way with Words

by Trina Berlo John May has released a book, Lethal Keystrokes, penned over the past three years at his Mulmur home.

The book is a fast paced read, much like a Hollywood action movie, but even more plausible and based on some sound research.

The story revolves around virtual assistant technology and the vulnerabilities that it presents.

In Lethal Keystrokes, would-be terrorists use the technology to gain access to secret information. May takes the reader on a deep dive into the psyches of all the characters as their storylines converge.

He said he has always been interested in technology, and as a doctor he became interested specifically in the influence of technology on people. He draws on his professional background in programming and medicine to inform what-if scenarios that read more like possibility than fiction.

The book is also inspired by an encounter his family had at the time of the blackout of 2003. At the time of the power outage the family was sitting around a campfire in cottage country unaware of what had happened when a shotgun toting neighbour from Michigan came over and told them what was happening but falsely attributed it to a Russian attack.

The power outage lasted several days and illustrated how reliant we are on electricity.

“The impact that not having electricity has on our modern society has really been an interest to me,” said May, thinking of a scene from The Walking Dead, without the zombies. “It wouldn’t take much; no electricity, no bank machines, you can’t even pump gas. That was all morphed into the idea of what devastating thing you could do to a modern country like Canada or the Unites States, is take away our electricity, we’re addicted to it.”

The result is a worst case scenario of how a technology breach could take down the very systems society relies on.

“There are simple, simple things that terrorists could do involving infrastructure that could really make a mess of an area,” said May. The retired doctor, musician and author has had his place in Mulmur for more that 25 years, and moved into the home near Terra Nova full time about 10

years ago. Since retiring from medicine May said he has had more time to work on his literary and musical projects.

May cut his literary chops on a young adult novel published in 2011, so he was not naive about the process. He recalls amusedly that by the time he was finished writing his first book, which was for his children, they were too old to appreciate it.

He wrote most of Lethal Keystrokes in a room soundproofed for making and recording music, which he released under the name of Johnny May. He said he tried to write a little every day but there are often interruptions. The pandemic provided some benefits and hurdles when it came to the process. There was more time, but there was also a rush of new material coming from others who were also taking advantage of the free time, and a paper shortage didn’t help.

Lethal Keystrokes is published by Granville Island Publishing and is available online, at The Creemore Echo’s Newsstand, and at Booklore in Orangeville.

Letter from the editor Welcome to the 2022 Home and Garden edition of The Creemore Echo.

For many of us, our homes and gardens have been a refuge during the last two years. As you will read on these pages, the pandemic continues to have an impact on the way we live. It has had its blessings and curses, from finding time to complete projects to the challenge of finding trades.

In this edition we feature two very different heritage projects.

Firstly, we had the pleasure of visiting the newly reconstructed schoolhouse in Batteaux. The school has been lovingly replicated by Pete and Diane Millsap. They met while at teachers’ college and have been looking for a schoolhouse for 30 years. They had their eye on the one in Batteaux because Pete had attended events there over the years when it was a dancehall. When they discovered that the schoolhouse had to be demolished they committed to rebuilding it.

Secondly, we went to explore the United Church Manse in Mansfield, which was recently added to Mulmur’s Municipal Register of Historical Properties to protect it from demolition. The house is structurally sound and its new owners Ian and Fay Maclachlan are committed to preserving and restoring all of the home’s fixtures.

We also meet John May, who took time almost every day to work on his novel, Lethal Keystrokes, finding refuge in his home studio in Mulmur, where he also records music. The book is a fast-paced action movie waiting to be made and offers a great escape from the real world, while at the same time presenting a plausible yet terrifying scenario.

We felt we couldn’t put out an edition dedicated to the idea of home without acknowledging that housing is increasingly more and more unattainable, meaning that there is a lack of diversified housing in this community and many others.

And of course we had to check in with the fabulous Creemore Horticultural Society, and the volunteers that keep the village looking beautiful. In this issue, we get the scoop from the Village Green garden design team about the plans for the move back to the Hort Garden at Station on the Green.

Hort Society volunteers are busy potting up extra plants for their plant sale on June 4. This is a very popular event and people are encouraged to come early to avoid missing out on the top picks.

The year 2022 has been declared the Year of the Garden to acknowledge all the benefits that gardens and gardening provide. Read about the campaign to plant red in honour of those who have lost their lives to the pandemic.

The Creemore Farmers’ Market is celebrating an exciting milestone. This is the 25th anniversary of the market, and The Echo crew is happy to report that we will be there on opening day, Saturday, May 21, to launch our annual subscription drive. While exploring the market be sure to come by and say hello.

Fattoush Salad Dressing: 1/3 cup olive oil Juice of 1 lemon, freshly squeezed 3 Tbsp fresh mint, chopped 1 clove of garlic, minced 2 tsp Za’atar 1 tsp liquid honey ½ tsp fine sea salt Pita chips: 1 pita, cut into 3 cm (appx) pieces ½ Tbsp olive oil ½ tsp sumac ¼ sea salt (either fine or flaked) Suggested salad ingredients: 1 English cucumber, chopped into 1.5 cm cube-like pieces 1-2 bell peppers (I like to combine red and orange for the colour), chopped into bite-size pieces ½ cup of cherry tomatoes, cut into quarters 5-7 radishes, thinly sliced ¼ head of iceberg lettuce, rinsed and chopped into appx. 2-3 cm pieces 1/3 cup of fresh mint leaves, chopped (Optional – Add in chopped celery, broccoli, chopped zucchini, and parsley) Top with 1 – 2 Tbsp of crumbled Feta just before serving.

Method: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Brush both sides of the pita bread with olive oil and sprinkle with sumac and salt. Cut into pieces, spread out in a single layer on the baking sheet and bake for 6 minutes. Turn and bake for 4-5 minutes more until crisp.

While the pita chips are baking, combine all the salad dressing ingredients in a sealable jar and shake well. Toss the chopped vegetables together in a large bowl, adding the dressing a little bit at a time.

Let stand for 5-10 minutes, topping with pita chips and feta cheese (if using) just before serving. Serve on its own or with your protein of choice.

Which vegetables to include is where you can get really creative and riff on the recipe depending on what you have in your fridge. Add snap peas. Or steamed asparagus. Or sautéed mushrooms. With this salad dressing, anything goes!

The result is a wonderfully hearty, nutritious meal that makes space in the fridge for the next market visit.

Canada’s House of Commons officially designated 2022 as the Year of the Garden, making Canada the first country to formally celebrate the joys and benefits of gardening for an entire year.

It is well known that Canadians, including many new gardeners, embraced gardening as a way to brighten their lives while staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether those gardens were practical vegetable gardens or beautiful floral havens, as we return to more sociable activities, gardening will continue to be a great way to enhance our lives.

One way to participate in the Year of the Garden 2022 is to ‘Plant Red’. This initiative was envisioned as a way to pay tribute to lives lost and honour frontline workers who gave so much of themselves during the pandemic. Of course, red is often used as an expression of Canadian pride, another reason to Plant Red in 2022. If you wish to share your Plant Red Garden, you can register it by submitting a photo of your garden; your free entry will be pinned on a map (by community not exact location) and you will receive a special downloadable Plant Red Garden Certificate of participation.

There are many other ways to participate in this national celebration of gardening. You may prefer a vegetable garden to feed your family, an ornamental garden, a native plant garden to support pollinators and the environment, or any combination thereof.

step or balcony, no garden is too small to make a difference!

As restrictions on public gatherings are eased, Creemore Horticultural Society (CHS) is reviving our in-person events in the coming months. We are happy to again offer a plant sale on June 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Station on the Green. Design team prepares for move to the Village Green

by Trina Berlo On a sunny mid-May Tuesday morning laughter can be heard from the Creemore Horticultural Society’s temporary garden beds. There, a group of gardeners in their tell tale garb are working away while chatting and cracking jokes.

This is where the Society’s plants have been lying in wait for the move to their new home, either at the new Village Green gardens, or in some lucky person’s home garden.

Volunteers with the Creemore Horticultural Society are beginning to transition plants out of their temporary beds behind the library. After two years of planning and design work the move is nigh.

The plants were moved from the Hort Park before construction of the new Village Green began. In that time the plants have matured and some are not needed in the new beds, so volunteers are busy potting them up for the June 4 plant sale.

The Hort Society is responsible for eight of the new gardens at the Village Green. They have been designed by a five-person team including three master gardeners – Gail Cocker, Christine March and Connie Hunter, with Melissa Doherty and Kathy Meeser.

Some of the plants will be transplanted back to the new gardens but the design team is also bringing in a lot of new material. Cocker said it will be a process, as plantings need to be done at various

“The gardens are large. They are going to be very impactful,” said Cocker. “It will be a real attraction and something to be proud of. We are very honoured to be part of it.”

Cocker, head of the Simcoe County Master Gardeners said the Hort Society’s gardens include two entrance gardens off Mill Street which will be eye catching to draw people in; two large gardens at the back bordering Station on the Green will be ornamental with soft, gentle colours

that will provide an elegant backdrop for wedding photos; a shade garden will have some seating where people can relax; a sensory garden will encourage people to smell and touch the foliage to experience plants in a more tactile way; a lily garden will border the stage; and a large pollinator garden will be established at the north end will act as an education space.

It supports the Hort Society’s mission to educate and beautify the community, and practice sustainable planting in

their own backyard, said president John Sabiston.

The Hort Society is looking forward to a return to normal this summer. Members will be back at the Creemore Farmers’ Market with the return of their Ask-aGardener stand, and they have signed up to man the charity coffee booth.

The Society is also looking for volunteers who are willing to do weekly garden work. Members meet every Tuesday morning at the temporary gardens for some work and camaraderie.

Making a Home

by Bonnie MacPherson What are the things that make a place feel like home? For Angelina Stokman, it’s friendly people, a place to get an Americano and take a yoga class and perhaps some art lessons.

Stokman grew up on a dairy farm outside Guelph, one of nine children.

She spent most of her adult life in Toronto and, when she retired from her job screening documentaries for the CBC News Network program Passionate Eye, she grappled with what to do next. Should she stay in Toronto and downsize or move away from the city?

A family emergency dictated her next move. One of her brothers needed support as he recuperated from cancer treatments, so she packed up and moved to Guelph. A couple of years of living in a townhouse convinced Stokman that she needed some outdoor space and a garden, and that she could be happy in a big city or a small town but in-between just wasn’t working.

While surfing online house listings, Stokman stumbled upon a cute little bungalow with plenty of room for a dog and a garden and thought, “This is my house. I wonder where it is.”

She made arrangements to view the house and then Googled Creemore to

find out what it was all about. From the moment she arrived, she says it felt like home.

The first order of business once she relocated was to get a dog – something which had long been on her wish list.

Without daily dog walks, pandemic life in Creemore would have been very isolated, but through her dog Emma she met many neighbours.

Moving during the pandemic may have actually been an advantage, she says, as everyone was “on pause” so as a newcomer, she didn’t feel left out.

Stokman loves to sit on her front porch and chat with passersby. She asked a couple of neighbours, who are gardening enthusiasts, for advice about a shrub and they persuaded her to join the local horticultural society. Before long, she was busy helping to build floats for the Santa Claus Parade, and has since become treasurer. Through some members of the Horticultural Society who are also curlers, Stokman was encouraged to join the Creemore Curling Club where she became an enthusiastic participant in both daytime and Monday night women’s leagues.

She characterizes Creemore as small, but not small minded. She finds there is no “us and them” divide between people with lifelong ties to the community and relative newcomers. As she approaches

the second anniversary of her move to the village, Stokman says everything came serendipitously. It’s all about being open to whatever comes along, she says, and likens it to Yoko Ono’s “Say yes to the universe” approach.

locals and the moniker is said to have been chosen in reference to the flat bottomed boats that were once used as part of the fur trade and shipping corridor that connected through the railway that once went through there.

The original brick school was torn down in 2019 because an oil tank had corroded and leaked into the soil and the Ministry required the site to be remediated before it could be sold.

Since the early 1990s, the Millsaps said they would take long drives in the area and always found themselves looking at the old schoolhouses that dot the townships, one for every settlement back when there were lots of children

They had big plans to rebuild an old schoolhouse in Batteaux, insistent that it be constructed to the exact dimensions and specifications on the outside, while creating an airy open space on the inside.

The one-room school, Nottawasaga SS 20, served the community from the time it was built in 1893 until the 1960s, when it was closed. The school is located in the hamlet of Batteaux, which is sometimes spelled with an x and sometimes not. The French word for boat, it is pronounced batta by

in every farmhouse and travelling a great distance to school was not an option.

They were partial to the schoolhouse in Batteaux because the footprint is a bit bigger than some of the others, and it is on a quiet road in a picturesque area.

Peter has fond memories of attending Christmas parties and gatherings at the schoolhouse in the 1970s with his parents Dorothy-Ann and Glenn, who were members of the Collingwood and District Square Dance Club. At that time the school was privately owned and rented out as a community dance hall.

In the 1980s Peter attended stag-and-does hosted at the venue, which he recalls being pretty rough at that point. Over the years the building had fallen into disrepair and in recent years the school was hidden

behind a veil of vegetation, barely visible from Batteaux Road to those who didn’t know to look for it.

On their drives they would always see a sign posted out front that read “Private property. Not for sale! No trespassing.”

Then, in the spring of 2019, Diane and their son Adam drove by and saw some activity at the school property. Hopeful, they got in touch with their real estate agent who was able to confirm that the school was going on the market. But it had to be demolished before the deal was finalized, and it was unavoidable because the foundation was compromised, there were structural issues, there were big holes in the roof, and the issue of the oil seepage.

The Millsaps said, their only option was to rebuild.

Using old photos and measurements taken before the demolition, they were able to map out the exact dimensions of the school, paying attention to the spacing of the windows, the design of the doors, and the brickwork.

The said they never wavered from their plan to replicate it because the whole point of moving was that they gravitated toward it because it was a school.

It is very fitting that the two math teachers who have taught at Stayner Collegiate Institute and have recently retired from Collingwood Collegiate Institute now wake up in a school every morning with the bright sun cascading into the main floor bedroom.

The rounded wooden doors, windows and bricks were all carefully procured to be as close to the

original as possible, using natural materials that would have been used in the original construction.

“That was the fun part,” said Peter. “Sourcing out all the authentic pieces.”

The only remaining original fixtures are three pendant lights that have been installed above the kitchen island.

Although the school had been stripped of all of the original accoutrement associated with old schools, the Millsaps have been able to collect chalkboards, old sinks, a water fountain, and even lockers for the cloakroom, all of which make it feel very much like a school.

Community members have gifted them with photos, stories and even the odd thing that had been salvaged from the old school over the years, including an ink well, a wooden pencil and yes, the strap. These items are being displayed in ‘the museum’ inside the front door.

The Millsaps say the project has been a source of curiosity for many but once they become aware of the goal to resurrect a part of the past they seem appreciative.

Peter said he is sure that if his parents were alive today they would be pretty happy with what they have done.

The Grand Old Lady

by Trina Berlo It was a case of love at first sight. Fay Maclachlan said when she first laid eyes on the Mansfield United Church Manse, she just knew she and her husband Ian would be the ones to care for the The Grand Old Lady until the next caretakers get their turn.

The house was built in 1903 and was purchased by the Trustees of the Methodist Church in 1904. When many of the churches amalgamated, and the Mansfield United Church was constructed in 1925, the Parsonage as it was called then became associated with the new Mansfield United Church and referred to as the Manse.

The Maclachlans have recently had the house added to Municipal Register of Historical Properties.

Properties included on the register are given interim protection from demolition, provided under the Ontario Heritage Act. Owners must give at least 60 days notice in writing of their intention to demolish or remove a building or structure on the property to allow time for the municipality to decide whether to begin the formal designation process under the Ontario Heritage Act. “We feel so blessed to have the house and I don’t ever want to see it knocked down,” said Fay.

The house has many of its original woodwork, windows, doors, pine flooring, and architectural features.

Other than some electrical upgrades, refinishing floors and finishing the loft area, they have done little in terms of renovations.

“We want to leave the house basically in tact,” said Fay. “We almost feel like we are the guardians until the next people move in, whenever that is, decades from now hopefully.”

There are two art deco light fixtures that are original to the house, windows of cranberry coloured glass above the windows, original doors with all the hardware, including a skeleton key, and an old fashioned door bell on the front door.

“It’s so rare in a home that is 119 years old,” said Fay, “Imagine a skeleton key that hasn’t been lost?”

It has an original barn with two stalls where the minister and his wife would keep horses for their buggy and cutter.

Many residents have fond memories of attending meetings at the Manse, visiting as children, or participating in cleaning bees in preparation for incoming ministers and families.

Locals say the house was a location for meetings, pre-wedding consultations, and even shotgun weddings.

to people in the area, they have been generous with their stories and old photos.

The Maclachlans purchased the house in November 2020.

They had been looking for a new home during the pandemic, taking long drives from their home in Brampton, where they had lived for 20 years and raised three girls.

Fay works from home but because Ian has to sometimes commute to his job at the north campus of Humber College, Fay set up a radius of equal distance to their Brampton home and started a search on Google Maps. She discovered Mulmur and focussed her search on the area.

“We ended up driving by and I absolutely fell in love with the house,”

said Fay. They put in an offer right away.

“The house has such a good vibe and it’s so beautiful,” said Fay. She and Ian refer to the house as The Grand Old Lady and have bestowed on it the more meaningful name of Vesper Solis, Latin for Evening Sun, because of the beautiful sunsets.

Established by council in 2014 following a recommendation from the Heritage Committee, Mulmur’s Municipal Register of Historical Properties include properties of cultural heritage value or interest.

Project Dragonfly Dragonflies have been around for 300 million years, predating even the dinosaurs. During this time, they’ve experienced a lot of environmental changes, and adapted to them. But today’s colliding crises of habitat loss and climate change may be more than these iconic winged creatures can survive. A new campaign from Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) shines a spotlight on the worldwide decline of dragonflies while raising funds for much-needed wetland conservation efforts that will bolster biodiversity as a whole.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature recently added 16 per cent of the world’s 6,016 species of dragonflies and damselflies to its Red List of Threatened Species. It cited the widespread loss of wetlands – the marshes, bogs and swamps where they breed – as the driving factor behind drops in global populations.

The news is sending off alarm bells for conservation organizations like DUC. “You can think of them as the canaries in the coalmine,” says Larry Kaumeyer, CEO of DUC. “Dragonflies are extremely sensitive to changes in the environment, which makes their welfare a strong indicator of the overall welfare of our wetlands.

These amazing insects are sending us a clear message about the fate that could potentially befall hundreds of other species that depend on wetlands during their life cycles.”

DUC has launched Project Dragonfly, a campaign focused on the need to conserve and restore wetlands across Canada to support biodiversity. Up to 40 per cent of the world’s wildlife species live and breed in wetlands. In Canada, this includes more than 500 species of wildlife – 97 of which are identified as being at risk. Each forms part of an interconnected system that starts to weaken as individual species become threatened or extinct.

Troublesome is the fact that Canada does not yet have a comprehensive wetland inventory and monitoring system to effectively measure wetland loss. Current estimates suggest that up to 70 per cent of wetlands have been lost in southern parts of Canada, and up to 95 per cent in densely populated areas. Add the growing impacts of climate change on both wildlife and habitat and the threats become even greater.

These threats have serious implications for another important species: humans.

“We can’t overlook the important fact that people are also highly dependent

on wetlands for drinking water, food production, recreation and the health of local economies,” says Kaumeyer.

“So, if a species like the dragonfly, which has been around for hundreds of millions of years, is struggling to find ways to survive with fewer and fewer wetlands on the landscape, what does

that mean for us?”

Real estate market may have topped out

by Bonnie MacPherson The recent cooling in the real estate market is just the beginning according to Oxford Economics Group, an independent global advisory firm.

In a recent report, the firm predicts Canadian home prices will fall 24 per cent by 2024, wiping out most of the gains made since the start of 2020.

Tony Stillo, Oxford’s Director of Economics says rising rates, record un-affordability, and policies to curb demand and boost supply will all contribute to declining home prices.

Bank of Montreal senior economist Robert Kavcic says all it took was a nudge in interest rates to change the mood of the market and adds when we speak of a market correction it’s not a question of if but where, how much and for how long.

BMO warns that suburban markets in Ontario are particularly vulnerable and that markets with “less exuberant” valuations will hold up better.

On the local front, data from the Lakelands Association of Realtors (LAR) shows that April home sales recorded through the MLS system were down to a more typical level for this time of year. For the Lakelands West Region which includes Clearview, Collingwood,

The Blue Mountains, Grey Highlands and Wasaga Beach, the dollar volume of sales last month was just over $208 million, down 21.3 per cent from April 2021. A total of 204 units were sold, down sharply from the April 2021 total of 313 units, but still above the five year average for the month.

Even as the number of units sold declined, the average price topped $1,020,000 up 21 per cent from a year ago, and the median price rose 18 per cent to $855,500.

Homes took a bit longer to sell in Lakelands West in April with median days on the market increasing from seven days in April 2021 to 10 days this year.

Months of inventory, which is a measure of how long it would take to sell all homes currently listed on the MLS system at the current rate of sales now sits at 1.3 months, up from one month a year ago.

Chuck Murney, President LAR says “Supply levels are still at historical lows which means that if we see a continued moderation in sales activity, there is ample room for the market to absorb a welcome increase in available listings. Prices are still trending near all-time highs but have begun to show signs of topping out.”

Cost of living pushes housing further out of reach

by Trina Berlo The high price of real estate, the pandemic, and inflation are all said to be factors in a growing attainable housing crisis. First-time home ownership was once the primary reason for freeing up rental housing but with the current market, people are finding they have diminishing opportunities for home ownership and are hanging on to their rentals, causing a lack of options in an already limited supply. “ L i m i t e d h o u s i n g s u p p l y, pandemic-related factors, and changing demographics have resulted in skyrocketing housing prices across the province,” states the Ontario Real Estate Association. “Ontario home prices have tripled in the last 10 years, but average household incomes have increased only 30 per cent. According to a recent affordability report from the National Bank of Canada, it would take 26.5 years – or 318 months – for a Toronto resident (making $195,000) to save a down payment on an average priced home in the city.”

Although people may be looking for opportunities, the problem is nationwide, and beyond. The Canadian Real Estate Association recently reported that housing prices have reached another record high, with the average price of a home reaching $874,100 – a 27.1 per cent increase

Key Accountabilities Reporting to the Foreman, Roads and Drainage, the Public Works (Roads) Heavy Equipment Operators are responsible for assisting with snow removal, sanding, inspecting and repairing roads infrastructure as well as clearing sidewalks and ensuring compliance with current Road Safety Standards.

Skills and Experience • Minimum Grade 12 education with 2 years of demonstrated experience operating heavy equipment, preference given to Grader, Rubber Tired Backhoe or Grad-All experience.

• Valid DZ Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract, preference given to AZ Drivers Licence • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.

• In addition to operating heavy equipment, must possess the ability to operate utility trucks, pumps, compressors, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, two-way radios and phones.

• Knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and safe work practices.

• Ability to understand, read and follow written and oral instructions.

• Ability to perform heavy manual labour, including bending, stooping, reaching and lifting heavy objects.

Key Responsibilities: Reporting to and working closely with the Youth Centre Coordinator the Youth Centre Programmer will be responsible for assisting with the development, implementation and facilitation of programs, activities, and outings (for youth 11-18 years of age).

The preferred candidate will practice, and when needed, exercise risk management when programming activities and during all on and off-site programs and events.

Critical housing calls on the rise (Continued from page 19) “Housing production has not kept pace with population growth, labour and supplies are stretched to the limit, we continue to underproduce housing units and this accumulated and growing shortfall will further erode housing affordability,” she said.

“As the housing affordability gap continues to widen across the region, families living with lowincome are increasingly less likely to qualify for homeownership and continue to struggle to access affordable housing. We must act now and we must act together to support affordable housing across the continuum, including affordable homeownership.”

Fleury said the number of calls she receives for critical housing needs is on the rise and callers are more desperate.

“Many of the calls I get are in immediate housing need and at risk of becoming homeless. As folks with rental properties sell to capitalize on this hot housing market, it creates an even greater strain on the rental market and increases rental prices as supply decreases.”

Home ownership continues to be a goal for Canadians.

“Habitat needs advocates for access to affordable or donated land and partnerships with developers to help us tackle the urgent and persistent issue of housing affordability,” said Fleury. “We are working hard to find ways to increase our impact to address
