NDACT engages on quarry proposal by Trina Berlo N D A C T – t h e N o r t h D u ff e r i n Agricultural and Community Taskforce – has been extended a rare opportunity to engage with a quarry proposal in the early planning stages. The volunteer community advocacy group was part of a successful campaign to stop the mega quarry in Melancthon and subsequently launched the Food and Water First campaign. They have been made aware of a proposal by Strada Aggregates, which is in the process of exploring the feasibility of converting its Shelburne pit – located at the 4th Line and County Road 17 in Melancthon – into a quarry, meaning it would quarry below the water table, something it once said it would not do. Member Carl Cosack said Strada is asking NDACT to weigh in on their application and NDACT will be looking for community support for its proposal on how to engage with Strada, which will be revealed during an online community meeting Saturday. He said this is a unique situation

If it is a public relations campaign, or if it really has some teeth to it, we will only tell as we move forward,” said Cosack. “Through the mega quarry we have learned so much about the water and its mystery about

how it moves under this huge plateau up here that anything to do with under the water table deserves attention. Participants will be asked to vote on the plan as presented and NDACT will follow up with an online survey to seek further input. “Very rarely do communities – it’s (See “NDACT” on page 3)

Students, teachers return to class by Trina Berlo The province has announced that students and teachers will be back in class this coming Monday after two weeks of online learning. “I am very happy to say that there will be a return to in-class education on Jan 17. This is something that medical officers of health have called for consistently throughout the pandemic, myself included, and so I think it is the important decision for the province to have made for the overall well-being of our children,” said Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit medical officer of health Dr. Charles Gardner.

He said although transmission can and does happen in schools, most transmission is found to be occurring outside of schools and that immunization and protective measures in schools will help to keep students as safe as possible. In Simcoe Muskoka, 85 per cent of the population five years and older living in Simcoe Muskoka have had at least one dose of vaccine including 82 per cent of youth 12 to 17 years of age. In addition, 41 per cent of children five to 11 years of age have received at least one dose of vaccine. “We do anticipate that there will be challenges for all involved with this

return to class and we as a health unit have been in ongoing communication with our school boards throughout the pandemic and in preparation for this return to school and are here as a resource to advise school boards and schools,” said Gardner. As expected Omicron has become the dominant strain. The health unit is overwhelmed and not able to keep up with cases, for which many people cannot even get testing. All of its resources are being deployed to community vaccine clinics. Gardner said screening for symptoms will be essential and the (See “Screening” on page 3)

Police nab two impaired drivers thanks to road conditions Police were alerted to two impaired drivers when they failed to properly negotiate Clearview Township roads in slippery conditions on Jan. 8. At 9:01 p.m., police were called to a Superior Street address in Stayner, in response to a vehicle that had reportedly collided with a hydro pole. On arrival, police observed several people attempting to remove the vehicle from the ditch, and immediately entered into an impaired driving investigation. The driver was arrested at the scene. Patrick Tutton, 20, of Stayner, has been charged with: taking a motor vehicle without consent; operation of a vehicle while impaired; having a blood alcohol concentration of 80plus. Later that day, at 11:39 p.m., while on patrol on County Road 10, police observed a vehicle lose control and spin out. As the vehicle attempted to drive away, police stopped the vehicle. This driver was also arrested as a result of an impaired driving investigation. Charly Tosca Dominguez, 29, of London, has been charged with: operation of a vehicle while impaired; having a blood alcohol concentration of 80-plus; and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Both are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood on Feb. 8. Citizens are reminded to do their part by never driving after consuming alcohol or drugs and never letting anyone else drive if you know or suspect that they have consumed either. If you suspect someone is driving, or going to drive, while impaired by drugs or alcohol, contact the police immediately by calling 9-1-1.
