GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR Welcome to the 2022 Spring and Summer Clearview Township Activity Guide. It would be my hope that you will find opportunities to explore and discover the Township of Clearview inside the pages of this guide. Clearview is such a wonderful place to live. We are blessed with beautiful landscapes, the wonders of our natural environment, and the friendliest people anywhere in Ontario! If you have an interest in rural culture or a taste for the urban fare, you may find it here. If you don’t find what you are looking for in this guide, then please take a look online at our Discover Clearview website, discoverclearview.ca. Our Township encourages events that promote community spirit and connect residents and visitors in each of our hamlets and villages. LIME KILN SIDE TRAIL Look for the Franks Kiln Side Trail to see the kiln once used by early settlers to burn dolostone rock to create lime, and the Freedom Rock, with inscriptions on it made by people of days gone by. CLEARVIEW ECOPARK Located in Stayner, the Clearview EcoPark Loop utilizes a mix of sidewalks and built trail network and with numerous access points into the various subdivisions both along the trail and west of the park. For more information about heritage locations in Clearview Township, visit our website, www.discoverclearview.ca. BETHEL UNION PIONEER CEMETERY This cemetery was established in 1855. It was considered one of the only integrated cemeteries of its time, with black, white and aboriginal peoples all buried in it. It remained an active cemetery until 1940 and ended up falling into a state of disrepair by the 1960’s. Prison inmates were used to clear away the surrounding debris of the site however; it fell into disrepair again by the 70’s. It continued to remain in a woeful state until 1997 when Jane Cooper-Wilson and a group of volunteers secured permission from the Township of Clearview to restore and maintain the site. Her organization, The Silver Shoe Historical Society has worked hard to restore and maintain the cemetery. They have also discovered around 400 documented burials with even more awaiting investigation. Address: 2249 Creemore Avenue New Lowell
NORTH AMERICA’S SMALLEST JAIL Constructed in 1892, and under the direction of the village Constable, this little “lock-up” served for half a century as a secure place to jail lawbreakers. For offences like drunkenness or disturbing the peace, inmates were lodged here over night. Those charged with more serious crimes were held here until transported to the County Sheriff in Barrie. The lock-up not only jailed lawbreakers, it occasionally provided social service. From its earliest years – and especially in the 1930s Depression – “tramps” found short-term shelter here and were fed at village expense. In the 1940s, new provincial police regulations closed this local lock-up. In the 1960s it re-opened as a tourist attraction, promoted as “North America’s Smallest Jail.” Although other communities may contest the claim, Creemore continues to affirm its title as a village with “a big heart and the smallest jail.” From May through October, the little jail is open daily to the public. CYBERGNOMES ROBOTICS Get your kids off the couch and get them exercising their minds with Cybergnomes Robotics. The Cybergnomes offer two competitive robotics programs for youth ages 9 to 18. VEX IQ - The Cybergnomes run co-ed VEX teams for ages 9 to 14. Registration for the Team starts in August. The teams design, program and assemble Robots to complete tasks for the annual game. They will travel to compete in VEX robotics competitions. The team competes at the absolute highest level of robotics offered by FIRST Robotics. Team members are challenged to design, prototype, fabricate and program a 120-pound robot from scratch and then compete in varsity level competitions with teams from around the world. F.I.R.S.T. Robotics combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology! Experienced professionals volunteer their time to mentor the team members and oversee their work. FRIENDS OF THE CLEARVIEW ECOPARK: We are dedicated to the growth and sustainability of the Clearview EcoPark as a native tree, plant, bird and bee sanctuary by providing valuable services to maintain the Community Garden, trails and naturalized areas and promoting year-round opportunities for community activities and education that will benefit residents and visitors. Volunteers are needed to help plant and maintain the community plots at the Community Garden, assist with monitoring/controlling invasive species, and assist with special events.
