THE CREEMORE ECHO • Thursday, December 31, 2021 •
Answering the "Call to Arms" The first headline of 2021 in The Creemore Echo read, “Vaccines roll out to health care workers.” Since then, there has barely been a week go by without an article about the regional response to the pandemic and the roll out of COVID-19 vaccines. No matter how many times we vowed to put out a COVID-free Echo, it didn’t happen. With very few exceptions, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit medical officer of health Dr. Charles Gardner has been doing weekly media updates, enforcing messaging about public health measures and the importance of vaccines and calmly and professionally answering an endless stream of questions about matters beyond his control. Early in the year, the UK variant was threatening a third wave, and by April a stay-at-home order had been issued. By summer many people had received two doses of the vaccine and were feeling quite a bit more confident about going to work, and taking in social events
after the province began to re-open in early June. In the Hollywood version of our memory, people were skipping down the street, greeting neighbours with open arms, calling out “I’m double vaxxed!” By August, The Echo headline read, “COVID-19 cases on the rise as fourth wave hits.” The emergence of the Delta variant did not cause a full shutdown but came around the same time as the vaccine passport, which limited access to nonessential services, including restaurants and entertainment venues. Now, here we are at the end of 2021 and the new Omicron variant has now resulted in travel bans. Students have been told there is a possibility they will not be heading back to school after the Christmas break, and the future looks as uncertain as it did in March of 2020. There is now a rush to get third doses, or boosters,

of the vaccine into arms, hoping the added protection will safeguard against the variant. So here we are, almost two years later… 22 months of face rashes, chapped lips and “mascne.” Even health officials are saying that they are surprised by the length and intensity of the pandemic so we hope there is an end in sight. C’mon 2022, don’t let us down.

Creemore Coyotes founder Tom Macham (front) and his team participating in the Creemore Santa Claus parade.
Putting coyotes on ice This year we shine a light on volunteer Tom Macham, who persevered and got a Senior AA hockey team up and running in Creemore, despite many, many challenges… including a pandemic. Macham was determined to bring a Western Ontario Athletic Association approved Senior AA team to Creemore after a number of local players, including his son, had their season with The Siskins cut short by the pandemic. It was also important for Macham to bring high-level hockey back to Creemore in tribute to the senior team that was based in Creemore from 1978 to 1993, and was immensely popular with fans.
Macham overcame a number of hurdles when it came to staffing and setting the team roster, and also faced much uncertainty about capacity limits at the arenas as public health controls continued to shift. With his team of volunteers, including wife Laura and “the girlfriends,” Macham and The Coyotes have organized a number of theme nights such as a teddy bear toss in support of SickKids Hospital, and a minor hockey night, recognizing local players. Congrats to Macham and his crew for getting the team going, bringing out fans to home games on Saturday nights and creating a new hockey buzz.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS
2022 Wishing you and your family a Healthy, Prosperous, and Joyful New Year!
From left: In 2021, Chase Quanbury attempted to persuade Clearview council to revisit its stance on retail cannabis as it was delving into the issue of cannabis production, but was unsuccessful; Residents continued to voice opposition for a development expansion at Mansfield Ski Club. In October Mulmur council entered into a site plan agreement for Phase 1, 48 accommodation units; Simcoe Grey PPC candidate Adam Minatel hosted party leader Maxime Bernier at a Collingwood rally in August, prompting a protest. Below: The Children's Dress-up Dance Sculpture was returned to its fountain base at the Village Green.
Hoping for health and happiness in the New Year This is not an easy time but know that we are here and dedicated to serving our community in 2022.

When graves were acknowledged at a residential school in Kamloops, churches in Creemore rang the bell 215 times for each.
Simcoe County's new automated garbage collection system received mixed reviews in the lead up to November, with county officials promising a bin exchange in the New Year for those who find them too cumbersome.
