Developer pitches capacity-building plan
Lions sponsor free public skating
by Trina Berlo A developer is offering to work with the Township of Clearview toward expanding capacity at the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Creemore in exchange for dibs. Pickering based builder-developer Tribute Communities is looking to apply the allocation to the Alliance Homes development, off Mary Street. Tribute Communities is proposing to build a pre-treatment facility for wastewater coming from Creemore Springs Brewery to separate and treat the effluent in order to get it to near domestic levels before it goes into the existing treatment plant as a way of increasing capacity. The Creemore WWTP is not functioning to its design capacity and can handle only a limited amount of growth with the current maintenance plan. The lack of additional capacity has put a hold on several residential development projects in the village. The Township of Clearview has commissioned extensive and highly technical engineering assessments of the WWTP, which lay out the need to address flows from Creemore Springs
Public skating is back at Clearview’s two arenas and the Stayner Lions Club sponsorship is ensuring it continues to be free of charge. Public skating is open at the Stayner Arena from 4:30 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. on Saturdays, and at the Creemore Arena from noon to 1:20 p.m. on Sundays. Participants 18 and older must show proof of vaccine, spectators over 12 must show proof of vaccine (children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult). Everyone must sign in and complete health screening when entering facilities. Social distancing must be observed before, during and after the activity. Dressing rooms will be open at the arena but participants are encouraged to arrive dressed for the session and leave valuables at home. Masks/face coverings are not required while actively participating in the activity but are required while entering and exiting the program space and moving throughout the recreation facility. Face covers must be worn in lobby and change rooms.

Tribute Communities, under contract to build out the Alliance Homes development off Mary Street is proposing a solution to expand capacity at the Creemore Waste Water Treatment Plant in order to allow them to get shovels in the ground. Brewery. Executive vice president Lucy Stocco and her team pitched support for building and funding a pretreatment plant, estimating a cost of between $2.5 and $3.5 million. “We’re not here just to develop and service the first 100 lots. We have
to know and understand how we’re going to develop and service the last 100 lots,” said Stocco. She said Tribute Communities has had to build treatment plants to service developments, including a 600-unit project in neighbouring (See “Proposal” on page 3)
COVID-19 vaccines now available for youth 5-11 The Pfizer BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 years has been approved by Health Canada. In keeping with provincial guidance that is informed by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), children born between 2010 and 2016 are eligible to receive the paediatric Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. “We are very pleased to learn of Health Canada’s approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 years of age and the recommendation by NACI,” said Dr. Charles Gardner, SMDHU’s Medical Officer of Health. “Getting 5-to-11-year-olds vaccinated is safe
and the most effective way to protect them from COVID-19. This is the next major step in our efforts, locally and beyond, to protect children and the broader community from the COVID-19 pandemic.” Two doses of the vaccine are recommended, with at least eight weeks between the first and second doses. (It is advised that children between five and 11 years of age wait 14 days before or after receiving another vaccine before getting their COVID-19 vaccine.) Health Canada and NACI have both noted that preliminary evidence shows the vaccine is 91 per cent effective at preventing COVID-19 in children aged
5-11 and no serious side effects have been identified. The vaccine can also help safeguard against the disruptions to schooling and extracurricular activities and the social isolation that children have experienced during the pandemic, say health officials. Therefore, the benefits of this vaccine for children outweigh the risks. Canada has one of the most careful vaccine review systems in the world. In fo rmatio n for p ar en ts an d caregivers about the vaccine is available on the health unit’s website at simcoemuskokahealth.org, including how and where to get the vaccine, (See “Youth” on page 10)
Purple for courage N o v e m b e r i s Wo m a n A b u s e Prevention Month and Clearview Township will raise the purple courage flag on Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, at the Emergency Hub on Highway 26 in Stayner at the request of My Friend’s House shelter for women and children. The shelter which services all of South Georgian Bay wants the local community to know that My Friend’s House is there for women in their moment of courage and helps them move forward with a life free of violence. But the courage of the woman is not enough to protect her and her family. It takes the courage of an entire community. The community is invited to join the #ChampionsofCourage monthly giving program at championsofcourage.ca.
