Volunteers planning Christmas events Tree lighting and Santa Claus parade return to a version of normal by Trina Berlo Christmas in the Valley is just two weeks away. Vo l u n t e e r s a r e b u s y p u t t i n g final plans in place for the annual community Christmas celebration that will incorporate the best of pandemic event innovations and a return to tradition. The weekend kicks off on the evening of Friday, Dec. 3 with the tree lighting at Station on the Green, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Tree Society of Creemore is again this year organizing a stroll through the area to the east of the Station. The area of Library Street and Caroline Street East will be closed to vehicles from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., to allow for physical distancing as people take in the sight of the lit tree, warm themselves by the bonfire, and take part in activities. There will be hotdogs and hot drinks for all, a photo area for group pictures, Santa’s trees to decorate over by the log cabin (children can also make a decoration to put on the tree), and homemade Christmas tree

The Collingwood Collegiate Institute marching band will be joining Creemore's Santa Claus Parade on Dec. 4. decorations for the children. The crazy mask contests will start at 5:30 p.m. with the pre-schoolers, followed by the grade schoolers, the teenagers, the adults, and the seniors. The Creemore Coyotes hockey team is going to make an appearance and have donated game tickets to the winners and other prizes for each age group. Winners will also get to change the colour of the Christmas tree lights. Visit The Tree Society of Creemore on Facebook for contest details.
Donations of food will be accepted for the Creemore firefighters, who will be monitoring the bonfire, and toy donations will be distributed by Simcoe County paramedics via The Creemore Echo. The Tree Society will also be accepting donations towards planting trees in Creemore. Having planted 25 trees in 2021, the group is planning for next year. Anyone interested in helping out at the event is welcome to contact (See “Parade” on page 10)
High costs drive up municipal budget by Trina Berlo Clearview council members got a look at the proposed 2022 budget during the first of several workshops Monday. The staff proposed budget comes with an increase of 9.14 per cent increase over last year. It is council’s practice to work through the budget whittling it down and often adding items, to get to a desired finished product. “This is perhaps a really difficult budget for our council to address this year given the Covid recovery
that our community continues to go through, given the level of support that we are receiving from the Province of Ontario when it comes to grants and other funding that comes to us on a regular basis, it continues to be challenging,” said Mayor Doug Measures. “We, as a municipality are impacted by a lot of external influences,” he said referring to cost of living, the construction price index, and inflation. He urged councillors to look for opportunities to reduce, delay or
create some savings. COA John Ferguson said the township is seeing an 11.6 per cent increase in construction costs, and has to eat some costs associated by contractual obligations. “I’ll be up front with council there is not a lot of discretionary spending within this budget,” said Ferguson. New growth is accounting for $200,000 in new tax revenue toward total spending, with the rest falling on the taxpayer, and reserves. (See “Clearview” on page 3)

Creemore Echo launches annual food and toy drive The Creemore Echo is launching its annual food and toy drive. The toys will be distributed to area children-in-need by County of Simcoe Paramedics as part of their annual toy drive. Over the past 18 years, the paramedics' toy drive has collected 90,259 toys, 42,874 pounds of food and more than $209,000 in monetary and gift card donations for families across Simcoe County. Paramedics will also be collecting donations during Santa Claus Parades in Creemore and Stayner on Dec. 4 and at the Stayner Tree Lighting Ceremony from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 2. Donations can also be dropped off at the Emergency Hub in Stayner, at 6993 Highway 26. Online donations can be made at www.simcoe.ca/ paramedicservices. Donations of food and money will be delivered to Clearview Stayner Food Bank. Coordinator Pam Royal said storage space is of concern at the facility, therefore donations of Foodland gift cards are greatly appreciated. She said many of the food bank clients don't have access to transportation and can walk to Foodland stores in Creemore and Stayner. The gift cards are also used to buy fresh items such as eggs and milk. Royal said the food bank is now seeing an increase in clientele with many first time users coming weekly. If people wish to donate food, cereal, peanut butter, Kraft Dinner and canned food staples such as soup and beans are always appreciated. The Echo will also be accepting donations of toiletries of all kinds including razors, deodorant, shampoo, and feminine hygiene products. The deadline for donations is Dec. 20, at 3 Caroline St. W. Anyone in need of assistance from the food bank can call 705-517-0166. Hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
