Chill on Mill promotes Saturday sidewalk sale Creemore BIA is planning a Chill on Mill Sidewalk Sale on Saturday, Sept.

Greens link climate action with social, economic health

The Greens are focussing on a growing housing crisis and how the unsustainable housing market is contributing to poverty, homelessness, an overall decline in health and emissions.

They link the climate crisis with affordable housing, claiming that creating sustainable and affordable housing would be better for the planet

by Trina Berlo Creemore’s new Senior AA team has signed ex-NHLer Sylvain Clouthier as coach.

“Boys, we have a top notch coach,” Creemore Coyotes president Tom Macham told members of the team gathered at his home for a recent signing party. “This guy’s the real deal. We will be playing against teams that don’t have near this calibre of coach.”

According to his career history, Cloutier played junior hockey for the Guelph Storm (OHL) from 1991 to 1994, scoring 237 points, 106 goals while also serving as team captain.

He was drafted 70th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1992 NHL entry draft and spent the next four seasons playing in the AHL for the Adirondack Red Wings but never made Detroit’s main lineup. He went on to play seven NHL games for the Chicago Blackhawks in the 19981999 season.

Cloutier joined the Coventry Blaze of the United Kingdom’s Elite Ice Hockey League in 2006 and helped

Green transition is underway: Clayton (Continued from page 1) progressive social and environmental issues, Clayton said he recognized a great opportunity when he was asked to run for the local Greens.

“The last year-and-a-half has really exposed a lot of cracks and opens up perhaps a new way forward and I’d like to think… that there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come,” said Clayton, a music teacher at Collingwood Collegiate Institute. “The Green Party is home to some of the most progressive, proven and studied ideas that can effectively address the crisis that we face now. I do believe those ideas have been lying in wait for this moment. We face a climate crisis, a pandemic, mental health crisis and more and I do believe these are all related.”

He said the pandemic has demonstrated how connected people are and progressive social policies are the way to protect the community as a whole.

He said climate action is also good social, environmental and economic policy.

“There is a green transition underway, Canada can be a leader or it can be left behind… and I know the Green Party has a plan to make Canada a leader in the new economy,” said Clayton.

He said locally, extreme weather is already affecting farmers, and tourism operators that depend on snow.

Virtual all-candidates’ debate Sept. 8 One of 100 Debates on the Environment, a virtual all-candidates’ debate on the environment will take place for the federal riding of SimcoeGrey on Sept. 8 starting at 7 p.m. The debates are coordinated by GreenPAC, a non-partisan non-profit organization that works to build environmental leadership in politics. Climate action teams in Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, New Tecumseth and Blue Mountains are working together to organize this event.

Following the format for the national debate on Sept. 9, only the local candidates from the four main political parties are invited to participate – Conservatives (Terry Dowdall), Greens (Nick Clayton), Liberals (Bren Munro) and the New Democratic Party (Lucas Gillies).

A non-partisan moderator will ask questions which the candidates will be sent in advance, as well as some questions which participants can submit when registering for the event.

OPINION OPINION Plant trees to slow climate change – never a better time than today

by Rob Keen Vast, beautiful, healthy forests define Canada, making up 38 per cent of our land, but they are under attack.

Wildfires engulf huge swaths of woodlands in British Columbia; smoke from similar infernos in north-west Ontario reaches as far as Toronto, Windsor and Ottawa. We know a main cause of this conflagration: climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - Sixth Assessment Report, released August 9, leaves no room for debate on why the Earth is warming, but does leave some room for hope: we can still restore Earth’s health.

Soon after the IPCC report appeared, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau set in motion a federal election. As Canadians prepare to vote on Sept. 20, the climate crisis is one of the top issues in many polls.

Voters want to hear what every political party will do to fight climate change.

Study upon study has told us we can cool the planet through a very Canadian activity: planting trees.

Our forests and urban trees solve many problems.

Record high temperatures have sparked heat warnings in Montreal; trees provide shade, cooling neighbourhoods by 5˚C. When we plant trees, we turn scorched lands into healthy forests. Trees absorb water, helping to prevent floods. Forests filter and purify the water we drink. And of course, forests sequester the carbon that we’ve released into the atmosphere that is dangerously warming our Earth.

The organizations I lead, Forest Recovery Canada and Forests Ontario, know how to grow new forests.

We have planted nearly as many trees as there are Canadians – more than 36 million trees so far. A recent study by Natural Resources Canada shows that over 50 years, the trees we have planted will sequester the equivalent of the carbon emitted by a million cars driving from Montreal to Vancouver – and back.

Canadians are good at planting trees. Ours is the rare organization that fully integrates all the components of tree planting. We carefully select and gather the best seeds of native trees, grow seedlings, then plant the right tree in the right spot, and keep track of new forests’ progress with the precision of an accountant.

We work to put the right trees in the ground with First Nations, private landowners, non-profits, volunteers, governments and the corporate sector.

Each tree needs years from seed to seedling, from planting to healthy forest. To grow healthy forests that future-proof Canada and Earth requires long-term political commitment.

We, like many Canadians, are keen to learn how each party in this 44th election is incorporating tree planting as a nature-based component of their climate change response plan.

Hoping for alternatives to 'wheeling monstrosities' Editor: I think the new waste collection bins will be an eyesore for Simcoe County for years to come.

However, I understand the economics and human resources elements of the plan.

We have a rural property with a long drive, so wheeling these monstrosities from the house to

the highway is not in the cards.

Perhaps the county could consider free delivery of garbage at the local transfer stations as an option to managing all this mess at the highway curb.

Mayor encourages residents to get vaccinated Clearview Mayor Doug Measures would like to announce that all members of Clearview council have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Made individually, the decision to receive both doses was to protect their families and loved ones and support Clearview as a community in the fight against COVID-19. Measures is encouraging residents to consider helping to fight COVID-19 and get vaccinated.

“I feel that it’s important, as a council, and our responsibility as leaders in the community to lead by example by announcing that we are all vaccinated.

I wish to continue to move our community forward safely and as a council, operate efficiently serving the public,” said Measures.

With mass immunization clinics now closed, there are still many options available to receive the vaccine including pop-up clinics, by appointment or walk-in at the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit located at 29 Sperling Dr. in Barrie, or through participating pharmacies and health practitioners.

Measures feels it is important to support the health of our community, “Our individual decisions to get both shots demonstrates that we support the effort to see members of our community be vaccinated as we face the fourth wave of COVID-19 together.”

Naturopaths launch 'wellness for all' program

by Trina Berlo Recognizing that alternative medicine is typically accessible to those with wealth, naturopathic doctors at The Creemore Apothecary are looking to change that with the Community Wellness Program.

Founder Kate Hunter has been offering the program at the Toronto Apothecary and now, in partnership with fellow naturopathic doctor Kathryne Petrov they are offering free and pay-what-you-can services in the Creemore area.

The Creemore Apothecary is offering free and sliding scale options for marginalized individuals, those with low/fixed income, BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+ and those on government assistance.

The program has been available out of the Toronto office since April, either in person or virtual. Hunter said the program exploded once it was featured on The Marilyn Denis Show, going from two subsidized patients per month to eight per week.

The practitioners donate all or a portion of their time to the program and access a pool of donated or subsidized supplements and wellness products.

Hunter said the program is a continuation of her goal of increasing access to alternative medicine seeing as the whole point of opening the stores was to provide a way for people to talk to practitioners without having to make an appointment.

Hunter said anyone in any tax bracket is welcome to submit a request for services using the online application system to choose the level of payment they can manage.

Hunter said the program can be accessed by those who are experiencing long-term or situational income loss and financial uncertainty, due to illness or divorce for example. It also helps marginalized community members access care by practitioners from their own community.

Survey first step in project connecting seniors to social and community supports Seniors and caregivers are encouraged to take part in a survey to help inform a project across the county that aims to connect people to resources and supports to combat social isolation and allow them to become or stay involved in their communities in meaningful ways.

According to Stats Canada (2010), in Simcoe County there are an estimated 25,000 seniors at risk of social isolation, said Pamela Hillier, with Community Connection.

Those 55 and older can access the Community Connection survey at www.simcoesurvey.ca or by calling 705-444-0040 ext. 246. The survey will also be distributed through community organizations. It is anonymous and confidential and has an option to provide contact information to be entered into a prize draw for $50 gift cards. The survey will close on Sept. 30. Final two halls weigh in on renovation options

by Trina Berlo Hall representatives in Dunedin and Duntroon have weighed in saying they wish to proceed with accessibility renovations.

On Monday, Clearview’s manager of parks, culture and recreation Terry Vachon gave the last two of six presentations to council. At this stage, all six halls will be undergoing review by engineers to determine costs and work out other details.

Both Dunedin and Duntroon hall board members indicated they would like to find additional costs savings.

Dunedin is looking for cost-lowering solutions by way of looking for alternatives to a long and costly wheelchair ramp, and to make all washrooms gender neutral, with the lower level washroom being accessible from outside.

Hall volunteers indicated they would be willing to fundraise but were not confident they could meet the 25 per cent mark initially proposed at $130,000, based on an estimated total renovation cost of $520,000.

Duntroon Hall declined an option to demolish the hall and build a new one and is looking for a second opinion on the original accessibility renovation design, looking internally for alternative designs that would meet accessibility requirements.

Along with the entrance renovation, Vachon reported they plan to improve the downstairs fire exit, incorporate an upstairs fire exit, upgrade the upstairs washrooms, replace carpeting, improve drainage and upgrade the furnace.

Hall reps said they are willing to work with the township towards fundraising $25,000 and up to $100,000 by 2025.

The scope of work for all halls includes kitchen upgrades to meet current Fire Code Standards and Dunedin is interested in upgrading to a commercial kitchen.

“Now that all six hall reports are complete I just want to reassure council that we have tight timelines,” said Vachon. “We know that the hall boards want to move, they want this to get going. They are all energetic and so are we so we’re going to be pushing our engineers to get these reports done. We are committed to that process. As well, I want to assure council that we are going to be as frugal as we can with the costs.”

Vachon reported that engineers are already working on costing out renovations for halls in Avening and Brentwood. All engineering reports will go back to council for final approval and then on to tender, if approved.

COVID-19 vaccination clinics opening at secondary schools

Under the direction of the Ministry of Health, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is offering COVID-19 vaccination clinics in some secondary school locations to protect all students born in 2009 or before and their families, school staff and people in the local community. Clinics offering first and second doses will be held from Sept. 9-17. The health unit will be utilizing space made available by local school boards and schools to ensure clinics are accessible to students, staff and the school community, while not interfering with academic studies. During school hours, the clinics will only be available to students and staff who attend or work at the school clinic location. Members of the school community and the public will be able to access the clinics after school hours on a walk-in basis. The schedule is available on the health unit’s website and will also be communicated by the school boards to parents.

Parents and students are invited to attend a live, virtual presentation on Wednesday, Sept. 8 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. by SMDHU Associate Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Colin Lee and Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital Pediatrician, Dr. Sarah Barker. Game 1 saw the Mets victorious by a score of 11-7.

The Creemore team was unable to stop the Mets who scored in all but one inning and whose balanced offense saw hits from ten different players.

Creemore failed to capitalize by

stranding a total of ten base runners over each of the game’s five innings.

In Game 2, Creemore was triumphant in a well-played 10-8 game.

Milton led off the game with a double, but some alert defence and a strong throw from centerfielder Keenan Reynolds caught the Milton baserunner in a run down.

This first out kept Milton off the scoreboard in the first inning and preserved the 1-0 lead. Evan Wells had two hits in the game including his

team-leading sixth double of the season that cleared the bases with two out in the third inning.

Reece Fuller and Thomas Weldon also had multiple hit games This weekend the team will compete in the Baseball Ontario August Madness Championship tournament in Sudbury.

HALLIDAY, Larry George May 3, 1948 - August 21, 2021. Larry Halliday, a husband and soulmate, father, papa, son, brother, uncle, and friend. This sentence doesn’t do justice to what an exceptional man Larry was. Predeceased by his parents, George and Bessie Halliday.

Survived by his favourite sister Donna (Wayne) who he talked to every night, older brother Jack (Marie), younger twin brother Leonard (Isabel), and youngest brother Bud (Judy), and in-laws Davie (predeceased) (Julie), Jane (Dan), Jeff and Chris (Linc).

Larry was Kathy’s soulmate. In the 42 years they were together, they never fought. They both knew when something was just not as important to one than it was to the other and valued each other's needs. He loved to watch curling with Kathy and his favourite cousin Susan. Larry touched so many people in so many different ways, but none so overpowering as his love for Kathy. The ache in her body can only be made less harsh in knowing that what they had was something so many people strive for, and so few ever achieve. Everyday with Larry was a gift. His best buddy Give’r will also miss their daily walks. Larry was not only a master plumber, but there wasn’t anything that he couldn’t do.

He was so humble that when he was complimented on his skills, he would just shake his head. He was a father and best friend to Matthew (Alina) and Jayne van der Veen (Hendrik). He was a gentle mediator, teacher, and go-to-guy to both Matt and Jayne. He loved his daughter-in-law and son-inlaw as if they were his own. He has left a hole in their hearts that can only be filled with the knowledge and faith that he is in a better place. Larry’s greatest accomplishment, his greatest source of pride was his grandchildren, Olyvia, Alexis, Jozef and Connor. He loved working with them whether it be crafts (which he loved...?), helping them ride a bike, fishing, gardening, camping, sitting around the fire, teaching them to swim, and the list goes on. Their motto was, “If no-one else can fix it, give it to Papa, he can fix anything.” The family would like to thank Dr. Akenyele, Dr. Houston and a very special thanks to the staff of the Grand River Hospital ICU whose loving care made his last days as comfortable as possible. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Ronald McDonald House.

Cremation will take place and a private family gathering will be held at a later time.

KELLY, Marion Loreinie (nee Rowbotham) passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on Friday, August 27, 2021, at Campbell House Hospice in her 89th year. Marion is now reunited with her beloved husband Ross.

She will be deeply missed by her daughter Judy (the late Blair) Eagles, grandchildren Lori (the late Darren) Shilvock and Derek (Jennifer) Eagles, great grandchildren Ella and William Shilvock and Carson and Abby Eagles.

Marion is survived by her brother Donald (Carole) Rowbotham, sisters Barb (the late Rod) and Holly (the late Charlie), predeceased by brothers Claude (Ena), Delmer (Marion), Willis, Allen (Joan), Lloyd (Jean) and sisters Kathleen (George), Norma (Mervin), Erma (Aubrey). Survived also by her sister in law Joy (the late Ron) Kelly. She will be remembered by her many nieces and nephews and their families and missed by all who knew her. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, at Creemore Union Cemetery.

Due to COVID restrictions attendance at the service is limited, please use the funeral home website to RSVP. The service will also be available through livestream. Two positions are located in the Creemore Arena / Community Centre and two positions at the Stayner Arena / Community Centre and are to begin mid-September.

Responsibilities Regular cleaning of arena change-rooms, washrooms, arena lobby, community hall, meeting rooms and kitchen. As well as ice maintenance duties and ensuring the flood room / refrigeration room is organized and tidy. Provide excellent customer service to the general public and patrons, answering questions and assisting with inquiries. Other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications and Abilities required • Must be at least 15 years of age • Ability to be available to work weekday evenings as well as anytime on Saturdays and Sundays • Must have reliable source of transportation to and from work • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team • Possess good customer service skills • Must be physically able to perform required duties • Knowledge of arena operations is an asset Wage: $16.06 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.
