Monday.

The plan is to replace the commercial buildings with one building that will have four commercial units on the main floor (4,566 square feet), four apartments on the second floor and a

third floor roof top terrace.

A deficiency of seven parking spaces has prompted an application for a zoning bylaw amendment. Although 16 parking spaces are required, the (See “Development” on page 3)

by Trina Berlo Incumbent Conservative Simcoe-Grey MP Terry Dowdall said he is planning to run a full bore election campaign even though there are limits due to the pandemic and time constraints due to the short election period.

There may not be any debates planned but Dowdall said his team is knocking on doors and hammering signs every day with the help of lots of volunteers.

“We’re working like we’re in last place,” said Dowdall – even though Simcoe-Grey is widely considered a Conservative stronghold.

What he is hearing at the door is that people don’t think this is the time for an election. He says the Conservatives were being very cooperative and the Liberal minority government was functioning well so there was no need for an ill-timed and costly election.

“For us, this is a very important election,” said Dowdall. “I think we are at a crossroads in society and we need to make sure that coming out of Covid, we have a strong economy and the next generation has the opportunity that we did. You always hope the next generation will do better but unless we change the path that we are on, I see more people falling behind so I’m hoping that they’ll vote us in and really concentrate on helping Canadians.”

Dowdall won the Conservative nomination in 2018 and was elected to his first term as MP in 2019 after MP Kellie Leitch announced she would not seek reelection. The shift to federal politics following an 18-year career in municipal politics, serving in Essa Township with his last post being mayor.

St. Luke's Anglican Church is organizing a back-to-school donation drive.

The church is collecting new and gently used back packs, crayons, rulers, markers, pencil crayons, erasers, nonperishable peanut-free snack foods (no pencil cases needed this year).

The back-to-school supplies will be distributed to students in need the week of September 16 through Nottawasaga and Creemore Public School and Clearview-Stayner Food Bank.

Donations can be dropped off at St. Luke's or by calling Lorna May at 705-352-2759 to arrange a drop-off time. The church will also be open for donations from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Vaccine pop-up in Collingwood Saturday The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is holding a one-day only pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Collingwood Home Hardware from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 28.

Individuals looking to receive a first or second dose may attend a clinic on a walk-in basis or book an appointment.

Pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinics are taking place at many locations throughout Simcoe Muskoka.

Vaccinations are available on a firstcome basis, while supplies last and no appointment is necessary. The list of clinics is updated frequently at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org/ Topics/COVID-19/Vaccine-andImmunization.

Conservatives promise to get people back to work (Continued from page 1) MP, Dowdall said there were a lot of firsts for him and his staff as they navigated the onset of the pandemic in Canada. He estimates the office was getting ten times the amount of calls than usual. He said it was a time of worry for his constituents but it enabled him to really connect with many different people in the riding, starting with Canadians stranded abroad, who needed help getting home, and continuing with businesses and individuals looking for supports.

When asked if there were any parts of the Conservative platform he disagrees with Dowdall said, “I am extremely pleased with the platform, there really is something in there that hits the concerns that I am hearing from people.”

His highlights include lowering the cost of living, jobs, doubling disability benefits, GST-free Decembers, doubling health transfer payments to the province, converting unused government buildings to affordable housing. To replace the CERB, the Conservatives are proposing a 50 per cent wage subsidy for new hires to get people back to work.

Dowdall hopes this will help address an employee shortfall in entry level restaurant, tourism and hospitality jobs.

So far, Elections Canada lists Dowdall and Christian Heritage Party of Canada representative Ken Stouffer as confirmed candidates. The Green Party of Canada has announced it will field Collingwood Collegiate Institute teacher Nick Clayton as its candidate and last week we featured the People’s Party of Canada and their candidate, Adam Minatel.

Election Day is Monday, Sept. 20.

Serious rollover in Mulmur Dufferin OPP, along with Simcoe County EMS Department and Honeywood Fire Department attended a serious single vehicle rollover, which took place on Thursday, August 19, at about 8 p.m., on County Road 21 between Airport Road and Third Line in Mulmur.

Officers are currently investigating a serious rollover collision involving a sport utility vehicle towing a small trailer with a Seadoo. The vehicle left the roadway, rolled into a ditch colliding with a tree.

As a result of the collision, the lone driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted by Air Ornge to a trauma centre.

County Road 21 was closed for approximately six hours for the investigation.

The Traffic Collision Investigation team of the OPP was brought in to investigate. The investigation is continuing and anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Dufferin OPP 1-888-310-1122.

Development falls short on parking (Continued from page 1) developers have planned enough room for nine, with eight spaces being allocated to second floor tenants.

“While the deficiency in the parking could typically be addressed through cash-in-lieu payment or a minor variance, the township has requested a zoning bylaw amendment,” said Marissa Handley, planner at Skelton Brumwell and Associates Inc. presenting on behalf of the developer.

“Strong consideration has been given towards the architectural design of the proposed development in keeping with the heritage character of the community and the downtown,” said Handley.

The building is proposed to be at a slight angle to the sidewalk, which seemed to raise some eyebrows.

Nolan Bentley, with Dickinson and Hicks Architects, said the idea to angle the building back to create a three metre setback from the sidewalk on

the southwest corner was to accommodate something like a café, with a covered patio area.

Members of the Creemore business community – while generally supporting the proposal – expressed concerns about safety and mitigating disruption to their operations during construction.

Creemore BIA president Laurie Severn, speaking on behalf of some members, said she is pleased to see investment in Creemore, to facilitate much needed retail and housing space. The lack of rear parking is a concern.

She and Councillor Thom Paterson are urging the planners to come up with some innovative and creative parking solutions for off-street parking.

Severn asked staff to ensure that the hoarding around the building site would be subject to some beautification requirements, similar to the hoarding at the Village Green construction site down the road.

Dear Money Lady, Before COVID I was always working as an engineering contractor for various businesses, but I have been unemployed for two years now. I was one of Christine the first ones to go because I IBBOTSON was not a full-time employee.

Now I am back working, but I wonder if business will ever want contractors again. Dave Dear Dave, They definitely will, just give it some time. It is predicted that in 2022 we will see a shift in the Canadian workforce. Prior to COVID, the labour market had changed immensely from one that was characterized by stable or permanent employment, to a “gig economy” of temporary or contracted employment where an on-demand, freelance or a contingent workforce was the norm. In the labour industry a gig can be defined as “any type of job with a short or uncertain duration.” This type of staffing model was on the rise from 2016 to 2020 allowing organization to fill skill gaps by hiring temporary and on-demand staff. This was not like the old temp jobs of the past, but rather short or long-term contracts for various skill levels. From blue-collar, light industrial workers to highly skilled IT, engineering, accounting and HR professionals, these temporary employees were more likely to be called contingent workers, independent contractors, consultants or even freelance workers. Regardless of the title, the gig economy in Canada, that once proved to be a massively growing sector, now due to COVID, has literally been flattened.

But there is some good news. In the last three months we have seen a major upswing of the gig sector again. Many freelancers are eager to get back to work. Businesses now have accepted that most of their employees can indeed work from home.

Many are finding that the flexibility and choice about when, where and how to work gives them greater job satisfaction. They now see the appeal of the old-style gig economy and many full-timers don’t want to go back to work.

Companies realize that they can get more out of their employees when they work from home and reducing their real estate footprint lowers overhead costs. High-priced office leases are not being renewed and highly skilled professionals are now pursuing project-based careers either with or without full time employment.

It is becoming a new trend in our culture to want flexibility in our working lives. We seem to now be changing our view and wanting to “work to live” instead of the pre-COVID ways to “live to work.”

County hears garbage bin complaints

by Trina Berlo Clearview Township Deputy Mayor Barry Burton, who is also Deputy Warden of Simcoe County, said the county has been hearing a lot of opposition to the new waste collection bins. He said that the county, along with many other municipalities are moving to automated waste collection because it is difficult to find staff to pick-up garbage.

“So your options would be, have it picked up using the bins, or take it to the dump. I don’t think many people want to be taking their stuff to the dump,” said Burton. “I ask that the public be patient and give them a try.”

He said bins are being distributed to all addresses in the county and bins that have been placed at “unoccupied” addresses will be redistributed.

The county will switch to the new bins on Nov. 1.

Make time stand still with a good Labour Day read

by Michele McKenzie Have you ever read a book that made it seem like time stopped? Or have you enjoyed a novel worth devouring in one sitting? One out of a million books can be classified as a time-stopper and a time-stopper is the very best way to spend an hour or 12 of your leisure time.

With the Labour Day Weekend coming up, we here at the Clearview Public Library would like to recommend a couple of books and one movie where a library plays a role as a character in the story (spoiler alert) if you are looking for something special to read or watch.

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate is a fictionalized tale about a true story of poor children kidnapped and then sold to wealthy families all over the United States from the 1920s through 1950. For over 30 years, Georgia Tann as the director of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society and her network rescued many children from dangerous and deplorable conditions or simply accepted unwanted children and adopted them out to loving homes.

In Wingate’s book, these experiences are retold as Rill Foss and her four siblings are literally plucked from their houseboat while their mother is at the hospital giving birth to twins. They are removed to Mrs. Murphy’s home where they endure life as described in witness reports from children who

were taken from their families. In one scene, Rill’s bedtime reading of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain supplied by the local library’s bookmobile is the only reason for these children to make it through the awful times before the dreaded viewing party with their potential new parents.

This is a book that believes in letting the historical truth be what it is. It may be ancient history to some but it does demonstrate the undeniable fact that generations are affected by the strange

twists of fate and the choices that were made many decades ago which had the effect of influencing lives when times were very different from today.

Now, what do a turtle, a blue heron and a library have in common? Rock the Boat by Beck Dorey-Stein is a wonderful beach read where the classic children’s book of The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf makes a guest appearance at the Rock Star Readers Story Hour that takes place in the local library. In this novel, Kate

Campbell returns to her home town in Sea Point, New Jersey after her life goes “south” in Manhattan, reencounters her high school friends as well as reconnects with her small-town life of trials and tribulations. Both the turtle who only travels in a straight line and the blue heron who can double in size are involved as they are indicative of Kate’s decisive choices in life. You will have to read this book to find out exactly how and why.

Did you know that The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf was banned by Adolf Hitler as degenerate propaganda?

This is one of my favourite children’s stories and I was shocked to find out that it would have ended up on one of book burning fires in Nazi Germany.

As one of the scenes in the thrilling screen epic of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Paramount/Lucasfilm Ltd) features a bonfire decreed by the feuerspruche (fire decrees), this beloved tale could have been one of the books going up in flames. Another of the scenes takes place in an Italian library and there is nothing quite like Professor Henry Jones and Indy arguing over “what book” in a pivotal moment of this movie.

by Trina Berlo Residents and growers participated in a public meeting to hear community input on proposed changes to Clearview Township’s zoning bylaw Monday as it relates to cannabis production and cultivation facilities.

In addition to many written submissions, more than one dozen people waited their turn to speak during a two-hour online public meeting Monday when director of community services Mara Burton presented her recommendations. The meeting is part of an investigative process following the passing of an interim control bylaw in October to prohibit the establishment of new cannabis operations for one year while staff take a closer look at the controversial agricultural use. Residents called for a moratorium on cannabis production fearing the crop would spread throughout the township, and unregulated, would result in more facilities like Peace Naturals, which has caused conflict with neighbours who now find themselves living next to what has been developed as a factory, not a farm.

It is proposed that Clearview’s existing producers Peace Naturals and AgriFarm be zoned to a new “agriculturally related industrial zone” to allow the municipality to specifically recognize these existing businesses and require any new cannabis production facilities to undertake a zoning amendment.

Other proposed changes to the zoning bylaw relate to lot coverage and frontage and separation distances, controls on lighting and odour. The proposal excludes hoop houses but allows greenhouses, with controls.

Kevin Elwood, one of the residents to initially request a moratorium on new cannabis production, said he believes there is a public will to very tightly regulate cannabis production.

“I am not able to recognize the urgency in some of the recommendations to facilitate the cannabis industry and production in Clearview,” he said…“I think we should be taking a very cautious approach to this bylaw, use sound land use planning to prevent any community turmoil.”

Most speakers supported strict controls and the addition of fines to seriously restrict the industry, saying no one wants to live next to a large scale cannabis producer.

Mary Laszlo, a neighbour to Peace Naturals called the facility a “behemoth” that has covered good farmland, and is the cause of constant noise, odour and traffic.

“It has become as industrialized as Toronto with greedy corporations coming in and taking advantage

of the openness and naiveté of the township and its leaders,” she said. “We can’t stop progress, I agree, but it needs to be managed in a sensitive, considerate way that will benefit the people of the township and not the corporations that see profits before all.”

Ilya Strashun said the bylaw would put severe constraints on anyone trying to enter the cannabis production sector and prohibit the ability to create sustainable businesses, allowing only the large-scale producers to flourish while the micro cultivators and producers are set up to fail.

“There is no evidence that our operations have done any harm or damage to the reputation of Clearview Township in any way. Quite the contrary, Creemore today has become known as the premier and top-of-class example of what a cannabis community can contribute to the local economy,” said Strashun referencing revenue and employment.

“This would be a huge missed opportunity for the township in bringing much needed new revenue sources, providing education, and promoting safe and knowledgeable consumption while helping to eliminate the illicit drug market.”

Producer Peter Miller, of AgriFarm at Cashtown Corners, equates cannabis to firearms when it comes to regulations.

“No matter how strict we make the rules, we’re not going to eradicate criminal behaviour through regulation. There has to be a more sensible and practical approach to public safety than just overly regulating and penalizing folks engaging in safe and legal behaviour,” said Miller. “Most proposed changes are cumbersome and impractical. We should apply consistent standards across all forms of legal agriculture from cash cropping to livestock operations.”

He said, contrary to public fears, cannabis supply and demand does not lend itself to Clearview being overrun by producers.

“It’s a low margin business dominated by a few multi-billion dollar public companies… The greater risk is losing the positive economic benefits of the small handful of legal operators in the township and the future benefits of others like them over the long term.”

Burton said the challenge is to develop provisions that will allow producers to produce and to reasonably protect their neighbours from nuisance effects. Staff will review public comments before bringing a recommendation back to council for final approval.

Observations published in new zine

by Trina Berlo “In rural Ontario, a boy roams the forests, grassy hills, and gravel roads in search of solitude and peace. As he wanders, he dreams of living in the most simple manner possible.”

Thus describes Fisher Monahan, a free-wheeling roving artist embracing the simple life. The musings and doodles of the young man entering Grade 12 at Stayner Collegiate Institute, are now being self-published as a zine entitled Sweetgrass Chronicles, named for the native Ontario plant valued by First Nation cultures for its purifying qualities The book is a collection of carefully curated journal entries. The first edition begins, “It is nice to live on the fringe of society, to explore and dwell in places that have been neglected by the status quo.”

Monahan said he has been journalling for a long-time but in the winter started drawing in a sketch book.

“Up until now it’s really been about finding the style that works with what I am writing about which is just observations, philosophies, thoughts, ideas,” said Monahan. “It’s mostly just a reflection on my life, essentially.”

He writes on solitude, “I’ve grown accustomed to being alone. There is pleasure in it.”

Monahan said he has always been prone to a certain level of isolation.

“I’ve always been like that but with the pandemic it allowed everybody to

Fisher Monahan spend more time alone and people took that differently. Some people may have liked it and some not but I think I have embraced the solitude it has allowed me to have and I have been able to spend more time reflecting on myself and on the world around me.”

Monahan said the decision to publish the zine has resulted in some new connections with like-minded people and he has been well supported by friends.

Ten copies sold out on the first day so he printed some more. He is currently planning a second and third edition.

Creemore 11U’s ready for long weekend showdown

by Scott Weldon The Creemore 11U Select team finished their Baseball Ontario August Madness league schedule this past weekend with four games in Brampton.

On Saturday, the team got off to a great start by beating the previously undefeated Sudbury Shamrocks by a score of 9-5. Evan Wells and Reece Fuller pitched well and were supported by error-free defence and a grand slam by Keenan Reynolds.

Despite being out-hit 10 to five, the

Creemore squad took advantage of eight walks and an error to hand the Shamrocks their first loss.

In Game 2, the team found themselves trailing 9-3 before scoring four runs in the sixth inning to bring them within two. With Sudbury on their heels and Creemore threatening to sweep the doubleheader, and take first place in their pool, the game was called due to the time limit and their comeback was cut short. Creemore had home runs from Ben Clouthier and Thomas Weldon.

On Sunday morning Creemore faced the Sault Ste. Marie Black Sox and narrowly pulled out a 7-6 win after leading 7-1. The Black Sox battled back and took advantage of some poor defence to make for a thrilling finish. Brayden Foulds shut down the Black Sox for four innings and earned the win.

The afternoon game on Sunday saw Creemore face the Brampton Royals for the third time this season. Hayden Goodfellow-Oster started and pitched three innings before departing with a

10-2 lead. Tait Broad and Cooper Duits would finish off the game which ended up 14-4 in favour of Creemore.

A six-win and three-loss record in league play has put the Creemore team in second place in their four-team pool heading into the championship tournament Labour Day weekend in Sudbury. The team will have two more exhibition games as a tune-up prior to the tournament. Come support the boys Sunday, August 29 at 10 a.m. at Gowan Park when they take on the Milton Mets.

Midland Twins claim NDBL junior baseball title

by Scott Anderson The Midland Twins went undefeated in the North Dufferin Baseball League’s junior division championship tournament in Midland on the weekend to take home the title after an 8-3 win over Caledon.

Midland entered the tournament finishing fourth in regular season play meeting the first seed Caledon Nationals in game one. Midland won the contest 12-5 moving on to face the second place team Georgina Bulldogs where they again won with a closer 14-12 score.

The two wins advanced the team to the championship.

In other tournament action, third place Creemore Padres faced Georgina in the first round, with Georgina winning 11-9.

Creemore then met Caledon in a do-ordie game and were knocked out scoring one run to Caledon’s eight.

Georgina and Caledon met in the third round on Sunday morning with Caledon out-scoring Georgina 10-4 and setting the match up in the championship.

The championship game had the Twins up early scoring four runs in the first inning and two more in the second.

Caledon plated two runs in the third and one more in the sixth. Midland scored

twice in their half of the sixth to extend the lead.

Midland had 12 hits including three singles from Lucas Shepherd, two from Zac Helmer and Christian Browne.

Lonnie Dunlop and Liam Thor doubled and both Kyle Weatherall and Kevin McQuinn hit a single and a home run.

Mark Sharples, Brayden Grech, Nathan Chan, and Logan Hart hit singles for Caledon. Mario Accardo and Reid Deibert both had two singles, and Cameron O’Neil doubled in the losing effort.

Chris Zanchetta was the starting

pitcher for Caledon pitching one inning, giving up seven hits and six runs, and had one strike out.

Nick Fiorucci pitched the remaining five innings, giving up five hits, two runs, two walks, one hit batsman and struck out one batter.

Shepherd hurled all seven innings for Midland and allowed three runs on nine hits, walked one and fanned five batters.

League secretary and junior division convenor Scott Anderson congratulated Midland on the win and presented the Anderson Trophy to Shepherd in a postgame presentation (below).

Save 91 supporters ask parties to consider alternatives

by Trina Berlo Quarry Aware, a grassroots organization, has launched a petition urging Clearview Township and Walker Industries to consider alternatives to upgrading 26/27 Sideroad and closing a portion of County Road 91.

The petition has been signed by more than 1,400 people, mostly believed to be local people affected by the proposed roadwork.

Wendy Franks joined the opposition in 2008 when the initial quarry hearings started ramping up, and she is a party in the upcoming hearing for the 26/27 Sideroad development permit.

“The more I looked into it, the more I was shocked that something like this could happen on Niagara Escarpment lands,” said Franks of her reasons for getting involved.

She said the goal of the petition is to inform Clearview council about the views of the public.

“The deal was done in camera and there has been very little public consultation and the public is not happy with it, and it’s not a small number of people who are unhappy with it,” said Franks.

The petition, part of the Save 91 campaign, aims to put election pressure on the mayor and members of council.

“These are material numbers for the size of our community,” said Franks.

They are also asking both Clearview Township and Walker Industries to meet with Quarry Aware to consider alternatives, “because we have never seen

any information on alternatives that were considered.”

“This does not work for the community,” said Franks. “We would welcome the opportunity to work through alternatives. We are very solution oriented.

We are happy to sit through alternatives that would be amenable to Walker as well as the community.”

NEC staff recommended denying the permit because alternatives had not been considered .

“This is the responsibility of Clearview Council and Walker Industries. It is incumbent on Walker to also pay attention to the requests of the community in which they operate,” said Franks.

They would also like a fair market assessment done of the roadway. Franks has previously procured a legal opinion that Clearview Township breached the Municipal Act by providing a “bonus or undue advantage” by undervaluing the road sold to Walker Industries after it was downloaded from the county.

It also states Clearview should have passed a bylaw declaring the road surplus before selling.

Franks believes the goal of Walker Industries is to get access to the rock under the roadway portion of the lands.

“I don’t have a problem with that,” said Franks. “I have a problem with 26/27 being destroyed, and that stretch of the Niagara Escarpment being destroyed.”

Upgrades to 26/27 were agreed upon a decade ago by the County of Simcoe, Clearview Township and Walker Aggregates when a deal was struck to close a portion of County Road 91 and transfer

ownership to the quarry to facilitate its expansion.

The expansion has proceeded while the roadwork that would create an alternative route for County Road 91 has been held up in legal proceedings.

The Niagara Escarpment Commission has denied Clearview’s application to develop 26/27. Later this year there will be a tribunal to hear matters relating to Clearview’s appeal of the permit denial and an application for an amendment to the Niagara Escarpment Plan (NEP).

“The rock under the road is not licensed for extraction and therefore we will not be excavating it. To mine the rock would require a new license application,” said Walker Industries director of communications Sabrina Paiva.

“As for road closure, ownership of the road allowance would be transferred to Walker upon the completion of 26/27 Sideroad as part road agreement,” she said. “It’s important to remember that the road agreement was not initiated by Walker.

Walker received the road allowance as par of the $7.5 million it gave the township to do the road improvements. The purpose of the road closure was to eliminate some traffic from County Road 91 so it could meet the design that would be acceptable to the NEC while maintaining a safe road for the community.”

Some of you knew our two big boys, RT and Braunson. We had to say good bye to RT last May because of cancer at 11 years and 8 months. On July 24 we said good bye to Braunson at 11 years and one month. We were so fortunate to have so many amazing years with them given 9 years old is considered very old for a giant breed.

Many will likely remember Braunson from the picture. He was the model ambassador for the Leonberger breed. He loved children. We always enjoyed the laughter, smiles and requests to take photos. Braunson was different at home. His nickname was Houdini – since he was very young, he could get out of or into everything.

We went through many different locks on our cupboards, fridge and freezer. He definitely kept our lives interesting. At around 9, he grew up.

I have made a book about him called the Antics of Braunson. For the past few months I knew our time with him was getting limited as he was getting more tired. We were up north in Kenora visiting our daughter and son in law for two weeks. We had our grandson pet sitting for us. Our other daughter called on July 23 late in the afternoon, Braunson was not doing well. After some phone calls she contacted Dr Ashley of Pretty River Mobile Services. Saturday morning, Dr Ashley and her assistant Kathleen came to our house. We faced time and after Dr Ashley examined Braunson, not even hospice care would keep him going until we got home July 29. So the very hard decision to say good bye was made to let him go at home in one of his favourite places. We would like to thank our neighbours Mike, Megan and family, to our daughter Sabrina and grandson Dresdon for being there for us and Braunson and Dr Ashley and assistant Kathleen, the support and compassion we received from both of them during this time was like no other.

WRIGHT, Yvonne (nee Bennett) Sadly passed away at Southlake Hospital, August 18 at 84 years. Born in the hamlet of Dunedin to Edward and Della Bennett, oldest sister to Ruth (Adrie deLaat), and predeceased

by Donna (Jerry Clarke). Hearing the many stories growing up at that time captured the beauty of the area, the many friendships and tightknit community. With her father being a carpenter and beekeeper and mother a homemaker, Yvonne and her sisters were raised to be compassionate, spirited and nurturing individuals being nicknamed as the cherished ‘Bennett girls’ . Her horse Pal evoked many stories (with tumbles) of her riding through the Lavender Hills and country roads. Pursuing nursing and becoming a Public Health Nurse in Toronto then later moving to Alliston and marrying Doug Wright. With three daughters; Brenda, Beverly (Richard) and Paula (Paul), Yvonne continued to Nurse at Stevenson Memorial Hospital, took up curling and was active in the community. With many life changes these were supported by her network of ‘Stevenson Nurses’ who became her champions and lifelong friends. From gatherings, pool parties and potlucks at her house with many singalongs, this was a tightknit group. Becoming a Red Hatter with many fun outings and much laughter was a regular joy in Mom’s life.

Dear Ross was her cherished friend, always by her side after Mom’s stroke 20 years ago. Cruises to the Arctic, Greece and the Caribbean with many great car rides in Ross’ MG continued to give Mom much pleasure in life.

Her children, grandchildren (Scott, Lisa, Mark, Matthew and Sabrina) and great grandchildren (Skylar, Kayla, Taylor, Raiden, Kaelyn, Zachary and Jaden), dear nieces, nephews, brotherin-laws and her many cousins were all the apple of her eye! Mom will be dearly missed but she has given us the legacy to move forward with belief, the conviction that ‘you can do it’ as long as your life is filled with love and gratitude. Thank you to all who have shown friendship, support and love to our mother over the years. A Celebration of Yvonne’s Life will be planned at a later date. She will be deeply missed by Katrina and Peter Bickford, with Annika, Tim, Lucas and Natalie, Sophie von Herrmann with Jasper, Robert and Andrea von Herrmann with Mischa and four great grandchildren. Christiane was born in 1932 in Reichenbach an der Fils, Germany into an entrepreneurial family. Christiane and Silvester emigrated to the “new world” in 1958, settling in the Toronto area. She was a loving wife and mother and was also active in the community. Upon retirement Christiane and Silvester moved their focal point from Oakville to their beloved farm in Creemore.

She will be remembered as the loving, caring, and positive person that she was, always thinking about others first. These qualities of Christiane will be very much missed, not only by the family, but by many who knew her well. A celebration of her life will be held at Trinity United Church in Collingwood at 11 a.m. Friday September 10. Creemore arena opens with additional staff MISSING

by Trina Berlo Clearview council has agreed to hire two arena maintenance employees, one full time and one seasonal, to facilitate the opening of both the Creemore and Stayner arenas this coming fall.

Terry Vachon, general manager of parks, culture and recreation, said compared to other municipalities, Clearview operates its arenas with fewer staff and that the additional

employees are necessary to avoid having to close the Creemore arena for the season like it did last year by meeting predicted enhanced cleaning, monitoring and other pandemic related requirements of the health unit. “ We h a v e d o n e a t h o r o u g h evaluation and we feel we can operate both our arenas safely and diligently by adding one full-time and one seasonal staff (both contract from Oct. 15 to April 15) to our existing team of

five full-time maintenance operators, totalling six full-time and one seasonal,” reported Vachon, adding the department is contemplating hiring four student helpers instead of three.

“The goal, in essence, is Clearview Township arenas will always have two maintenance staff during ice rentals, every evening and weekend, 7 days a week.”

The additional associated cost is $32,772.48 for 2021 and $50,419.20 for 2022.

Vachon said the additional staffing may also help the municipality prepare for anticipated provincial legislation that prevents people from working alone in arenas, but there are still many unknowns when it comes to both the legislation or what the health protocols will be from the health unit.

Vachon said for the most part, arena user groups are committed to getting back on the ice and he expects both arenas to have full schedules.
