PPC leader visits riding, local candidate by Trina Berlo The federal election campaign started with gusto Wednesday when People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier made tour stops in Collingwood and Wasaga Beach. Bernier vowed to use his words and his philosophy as weapons in the battle of ideas and he asked supporters to do the same. “Use your words, use your weapons and help us to rebuild this country based on freedom and on western civilization values, not on totalitarianism and socialism,” Bernier told a group of about 100 supporters gathered at Sunset Point in Collingwood. He said Canada needs a new voice, a

common sense and ideological revolution and that’s what his party is doing. “We are doing politics differently and the other options suck so that’s the reality. They don’t have any solutions for the challenges of today,” said Bernier. The former Conservative MP promised cuts to the United Nations, the CBC, corporate welfare, foreign aid but said the most important debate at the time is about lockdowns, vaccine passports, mask mandates. “We will win that debate because we are speaking about facts and it is based on science. We know that the virus is there and it will be with us. We need to live with it,” said Bernier, equating (See “Bernier” on page 9)

The August 23 meeting of Clearview council will review two different sides of Cannabis in Clearview Township, the bylaw regulating cannabis cultivation and production facilities, and a recommendation to issue a survey gauging public interest on allowing cannabis retail operations throughout the township. A public meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday to inform the public and allow them to comment on proposed regulations of Zoning Bylaw 06-54, setting out permitted land uses and development standards for cannabis cultivation and cannabis production facilities in Clearview. Written public comments about the proposed updates can be submitted until noon on August 20 to Director of Community Services, Mara Burton via email at mburton@clearview.ca or online through the Public Meeting Participation Form, www.clearview.ca/ Public-Meeting-Participation. A separate item up for discussion is the recommendation being brought forward by Clearview’s Economic Development Advisory Committee, requesting that council survey residents to gauge public opinion on opting into the province of Ontario’s cannabis retail program. In 2019, council, after consultation with the public, decided to opt-out of the retail cannabis program with the option of opting back in at any time. If council had opted in, they would have been unable to opt-out in the future. The proposed survey would then invite public input at that time. The August 23 meeting of Clearview council will be held virtually and is live-streamed on Clearview’s YouTube channel, www.youtube. com/c/ClearviewTownshipCA.
