Record home sales in April

by Bonnie MacPherson April was another record month for home sales in the region. Matthew Lidbetter, president of the Southern Georgian Bay Association of Realtors (SGBAR) reports that April sales were 48.6 per cent above the five-year average for the month.

More than 600 home sales were recorded through the MLS system, more than double the levels from April 2020. The dollar volume of sales reported by SGBAR was $513.4 million last month. In the western region which includes Wasaga Beach, Clearview, Collingwood, Blue Mountains, Meaford and Grey Highlands, 321 home sales were recorded in April.

The COVID pandemic put the

brakes on the normally busy spring market last year. In April 2021, the number of new listings more than doubled to 893, the largest number of new listings added in the month of April in more than five years. Lidbetter says a sustained influx of new inventory has been spurring higher sales levels, but almost all new supply is getting eaten up. Overall inventory levels have stopped declining, but remain at record lows keeping market conditions some of the tightest on record.

One measure of the market is months of inventory – the number of months it would take to sell current inventory at the current rate of sales activity. At the end of April 2020, that number was 7.6 months. Today, it is down to 0.9 months.

by Bonnie MacPherson Tired of being out-bid on houses so you’ve decided to build? Whoa! Not so fast! Creemore builder, Gord Zeggil says the construction industry is seeing the same high demand as the resale housing market, so building your dream home may take a bit longer than anticipated.

Zeggil has been a fixture on the local construction scene for 20-plus years. Last May he launched a new company, Mountain Ridge Homes. He has enough jobs booked to keep his crew busy into 2023, and says that is typical of most local builders. Prior to the start of the pandemic, Zeggil says he was booked about a year ahead, but between city dwellers looking to make the move to a small town and current residents renovating existing properties, he was forced to hire more workers to keep up with the demand.

As well as increasing the amount of lead time required for major projects, the pandemic has had a significant impact on cost and availability of materials. Everything from wood and steel to plumbing and electrical supplies has risen in price between 30 and 50 per cent. Windows and doors which used to be delivered in four to six weeks now take three months or more. Sometimes materials are simply not available, as was the case last spring and summer with pressure treated lumber. Builders have resorted to pre-buying home packages to secure prices and guarantee availability. Zeggil predicts that some developers who pre-sold multiple units and didn’t have long term supplier contracts in place to protect against price increases will be in financial trouble.

permits in Collingwood and limits on water and waste treatment capacity in Creemore and Stayner will put further pressure on existing home inventory.

When asked whether rural land with private wells and septic systems is becoming a more attractive alternative Zeggil pointed out that vacant land is getting hard to find. Land outside the settlement areas in the township’s Official Plan is often subject to restrictions imposed by the Niagara Escarpment Commission (NEC) and or the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA). Satisfying those requirements can be a long and expensive process, and the township cannot issue building permits until the NEC and NVCA have signed off.

Clearview Township chief building official Scott McLeod says the number and value of permits being issued is way up. The township issued 80 building permits in the first quarter of 2021, up from 64 in the same period last year. The value of permits issued increased from approximately $10 million in the first quarter of 2020 to $18.9 million this year. The vast majority of permits, totalling roughly $18.4 million in value are for residential construction. Typical turnaround time for a straightforward building permit application was around two weeks, prior to the pandemic. With most staff working remotely now, that has stretched to about three weeks. McLeod is proud of the efforts of township staff in the face of Covid-19 restrictions, and says they appreciate the patience and understanding of permit applicants.

For anyone needing NVCA or NEC approvals, McLeod encourages them to submit applications simultaneously with the application for a township building permit to speed up the process.

THE WAY WE WERE

The meaning of home Home. The pandemic has certainly given new meaning to the significance of home.

Remember the days of wishing we could have one day at home with nothing to do? Cue 2020.

We are spending more time at home than ever before and probably looking at it inside and out, assessing it for how it can be better utilized, how it can be multifunctional, how it can be therapeutic, and how it can be entertaining. Perhaps you are working from home with multiple members of the family who are always in meetings and taking online classes, perhaps you go out to work and rely on home as a place of refuge to come home to.

We acknowledge that the ideal home is not always accessible to everyone, especially in the current real estate market. In this issue, we have addressed the hurdles that are present whether it is finding a new home here in the country, a new build or a renovation.

No matter what type of housing people are hoping to find, it is difficult.

In the pages of this Home and Garden edition we explore ways that people are using the pandemic as an impetus for a change in career. We meet a woman who has tapped into people’s need for a little sweet treat during these times of constraint, and some airline employees who have taken over and rebranded a local flower shop.

We are also featuring a family that is doing the homesteading thing within the suburbs of Creemore, with a focus on healthy, homegrown food as a way of life and learning about nutrition.

We were thrilled to talk to a stonemason who has a passion for dry stone walling and uses stone local to each site to construct something beautiful and long lasting while adhering to the traditions of the trade.

On a personal note, having been drawn to the trails, I noticed that there was some heavy traffic out there. A hunch proved correct when local Bruce Trail volunteers confirmed that there has been a huge uptick in memberships, and that’s only accounting for the people who paid their dues, not the hordes of other people who are accessing a world class trail system that runs through their neighbourhoods. While out on the trails we spotted a young lad who goes by the handle Henry the Hiker, and he is an inspiration to all parents and children who are looking for something to break up the day while learning-at home.

And alas, we were compelled to address the recurring nightmare that is the Gypsy Moth Caterpillar which are descending on us at this very moment. They may be tiny but their numbers are plentiful and we can’t say for certain if 2021 will be their demise.

These stories illustrate a point in time, one when people are looking at ways of reinventing themselves, their indoor and outdoor spaces and their approach to physical and mental health. We hope this edition finds you safe and sound and enjoying your home, wherever and with whomever that may be.

Concerns over 26/27 SR persist Editor: We note in the Creemore Echo’s April 30 letters section, a submission by Lynn Eakin of Clearview concerning, “Key Missing facts on the 26/27 SR.” We believe this letter is timely based on Mayor Measures so-called statement of facts. The article relates to additional information that the mayor fails to mention and Clearview Council needs to consider in their deliberations and better understanding of the issues regarding the sideroad.

With the growth being experienced in Simcoe and Grey and further up the Bruce Peninsula the proposed closure of an inter-county arterial road that has served the area for over 100 years and can handle the heaviest trucks allowed on the road in Ontario is a mistake.

The proposed reconstruction of 26/27 does not provide a comparable replacement for 91, as it is restricted to vehicles with wheel loads under five tonnes. In the public information session held by the Niagara Escarpment Commission back in June of 2019 aggregate suppliers voiced their concern. They pointed out if 91 is closed their haulage distance will increase by about 14km putting the aggregate suppliers at an estimated $0.70 per tonne disadvantage compared to Walker Industries. Heavy commercial vehicles will need to find alternate routes and will be similarly impacted.

Section 106 of the Ontario Municipal Act deals

with Economic Development Services and states in the Assistance Prohibited clause “Despite any Act, a municipality shall not assist directly or indirectly any manufacturing business or other industrial or commercial enterprise through the granting of bonuses for that purpose.”

Clearview needs to provide clarification on why bonusing Walker Industries was done and is not prohibited.

Expanded digital technology provides knowledge, transparency and clarity for these new generations who are more confident, optimistic and smarter than any generation before them. They will need to get into the habit of budgeting more, saving more, and most of all planning for their future. That being said, they are not afraid to get uncomfortable and to try new things which is an amazing advantage over past generations who would shy away from getting out of their comfort zone.

Saving for the future with regular monthly contributions is of the utmost importance for these two generations, utilizing TFSAs, RRSPs, company pension/savings plans, personal savings accounts, and participating life insurance. Planning, learning and talking to others who have been

successful is the key to balancing current financial needs and meeting long-term goals. Yes, it will be a little harder for these two generations to retire debt-free and wealthy. They may have to work longer or be more creative when developing a wealth building strategy; but they will get there. It is said that when times are harder, more challenging and problematic; we become better, more resilient and actually discard our self-doubt to aspire to greatness. I am excited to see what these two generations do in the future.

Remember, winners will always find a way to triumph over adversity no matter what the odds. These two generations are more educated, more confident, more optimistic, and they CAN achieve more. The fact is, if you believe that you were born to just grow up and pay bills; well, that’s all you’ll do. But, if you believe that you can do more and become better than you are right now – then get started, be focused, and stick to your plan. You’ll get there – I promise.

by Trina Berlo A group of grounded aviation sector employees are learning on the fly as they pool their skills to open a flower shop in Creemore.

Owner Samantha Kot is joined in the venture by friends and family in the aviation sector including her brother Jason, social media manager Annie Rusinowski, and designer Theo Flamenbaum.

Kot comes to Creemore by way of Orangeville and has always had a connection to the Mulmur area.

She is drawing on a horticultural background to pivot into the flower business for the long-term, regardless of what happens in the aviation world once travel opens up again.

Kot purchased Flowers by Ms Design from Marcy Stewart and has since changed the name and relocated to 154 Mill St., where The Creemore Flower Company will be offering many of the existing services such as fresh cut flowers and arrangements by order and delivery. A range of house plants and hanging baskets are also in stock along with a number of specialty plant and garden items including grass seed, fertilizers, insecticide soaps, Gypsy Moth Caterpillar control and other accessories.

“We hope to be that one-stop for everyone’s floral needs,” said Kot. “We’re trying to make it homey and a place that I would enjoy shopping.”

She is also carrying some other items including Lost Aviator coffee created by two furloughed airline pilots from Guelph and macrame plant holders and wall hangings created by Jacqueline Ruth.

And because she is an art lover and the space was once an art gallery and has ideal lighting, Kot has offered up the walls to area artists, with the work of Margaret Cora Schmor of Collingwood showing first, and has started lining up others.

“The community has been very welcoming,” said Kot. We have had an amazing reception. Everyone has been so warm and welcoming and we’re looking forward to everyone growing with us.”

“One of my colleagues described it one time to me as ‘the intelligent placement of stones to create structure’ and that really distills it,” said Lemieux.

“It’s not just putting rocks on top of rocks.” There are principles to be followed to ensure stability, supported

stone walling is more of an agrarian utilitarian craft.

Lemieux began a career as a stonemason 15 years ago in Ottawa and joined a large restoration company working on federal buildings, doing stone cutting and traditional mortared stonemasonry work. During that time he would volunteer to work on dry stone walling sites in order to gain experience. He also travelled to Europe three times to volunteer with master dry stone wallers in places like Ireland, Whales and the United Kingdom.

Lemieux said the ancient craft was developed all over Europe and Japan, really anywhere that stone is prevalent in the landscape.

“It’s a really old building technique. Using stones without mortar to build things goes really far back.

There are examples in Scotland that are older than the pyramids,” said Lemieux.

More modern examples include walls built of stones cleared from farm fields, designed to contain livestock and to keep other animals out, and windbreaks to stop

erosion.

Traditionally, the technique developed as a way of utilizing the material that was at hand.

“It’s a really green building technique for that very reason,” said Lemieux.

The lack of mortar also helps to reduce the trade's carbon footprint and means it makes for stable retaining walls because no hydrostatic pressure builds up behind it.

“In England it’s still much more of an agrarian skill, as opposed to here.”

Lemieux said settlers clearing land locally had an abundance of lumber at hand so they would have taken the easier route of building a wooden fence but there are rare examples of stone walls bordering local pastures.

In terms of his own custom work as a dry stone waller, Lemieux says it runs the gamut.

Through his business, ADL Stonework, he is commissioned to create artistic landscape features on

country estate properties, such as bridges, or retaining walls, even a stone room built on the site of an old quarry using Credit Valley sandstone, the famous stone used to build Queen’s Park.

“I really love using native stone from the property I’m working on,” said Lemieux. “Walls that are built using local stone just fit so beautifully in the landscape.”

As a part of a fairly small community of dry stone wallers, Lemieux said he often works solo, using hand tools almost exclusively, and commissions may take him far afield. When needed, he said he calls on his colleagues for bigger jobs.

“We all lean on each other because there’s only a handful of people who do this full-time around here, in the whole province really,” said Lemieux.

by Trina Berlo For something done on a lark, a local baker has seen huge interest in the start up of her company, Mother Butter.

“It’s turned into something pretty big, pretty quickly,” said Jade Hansen.

The logo, the cheeky name and the captive audience of people hungry not only for a sweet treat but also interaction on social media, could all be reasons for the adoration.

Hansen said the online profile has allowed her a platform to share her true personality, even though in person she is reserved and shy.

Shortbread, she said, is something people usually make at Christmas but they love eating it all year round. For quite some time, it has been a favourite of her’s to give as a hostess gift or send to friends and family, regardless of the time of year.

Hansen worked as a professional baker before moving to Creemore.

When some health issues and the pandemic caused her to be home for

two years, and to be homeschooling her youngest daughter.

“I thought, you know what I gotta do something, I’m dying of boredom here,” said Hansen.

“I’ve always given my cookies away and I thought, maybe I’ll see if I can sell some of these babies, and the reception

Mother Butter launched on Instagram in April and caught the attention of all those with a sweet tooth who appreciate some good pop culture tie-in branding.

The orders began pouring in for the many varieties of shortbread with fun flavours like Raspberry Beret (dark chocolate and raspberry), Salty B#tch (salted caramel chips), Ziggy Stardust (lemon and white chocolate) and Crunch Me Baby One More Time (handmade sponge toffee and Belgian chocolate chips), to name a few. Orders also started rolling in for Babka, cupcakes with shortbread cookie on top, tarts with shortbread crust and the savoury shortbreads on the menu – variations of cheddar cookies named for country music legends. The savoury ones go great on a charcuterie board and are best enjoyed with a pint of beer or a glass of wine, said Hansen.

She said she hears music when she looks at food, especially her own baking, and she attaches the song to the product.

Although she says she is definitely a hip-hop girl, she was listening to old country when she was developing the savoury recipes, and it stuck.

“There’s no pressure because it’s just me doing this for myself to make me happy during the pandemic,” said Hansen. “I know that I’m creative, and an artist, but I didn’t know I was this kooky with putting it all together and it’s a whole bunch of fun.”

Hansen said she learned to bake as a child with her Nan and her mom, benefitting from their two different

styles: Where her mom was a more precise baker, her Nan encouraged her to be more experimental.

Although Hansen admits i t ’s p o s s i b l e those early experiments weren’t always edible. She thinks that creativity, of being allowed to improvise recipes is what has made her the baker she is today.

by Trina Berlo At an unsuspecting home in Creemore a “greenhouse jungle” is brimming with seedlings ready to go in the ground after all threat of frost has passed. Homesteader Caroline McIntosh says the current crop is only a portion of what’s leftover from a sale she held, an evolution in her mission to share the health and gratification that comes from growing one’s own food.

McIntosh is a busy mom-of-three young children and works full-time as the executive director of a notfor-profit, all while earning her real estate licence, and finding time for her “secret oasis.”

McIntosh said she started growing food in 2012 and since moving to Creemore in 2017 has had an ever expanding garden, even though it is a smaller space. McIntosh admits to rehoming flowering perennials in favour of food producing plants to

make room for the ever expanding garden.

The family’s quarter-acre lot is laid out to maximize space and optimal growing locations. Whether it wants to creep, climb or sprawl, they have devised a way for it to thrive.

“I just keep going and going, wanting to grow more and more,” she said.

Her three children – Adair, 8, Griffin, 6, and Miles, 2, love to graze on the strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries. There’s also a pear tree and a cherry tree.

They had so many strawberries that the children could eat until their hearts content and they still had enough to freeze some and make jam to last the winter.

McIntosh’s partner Matthew Martin, a local builder, is often enlisted to help create structures.

The beds were then closed in to deter the critters from eating everything. A melon arch was constructed for the front yard, where the berries and other sun seekers are growing.

The vegetable plots are in the backyard and this year, McIntosh said she is going for variety. She said they have a lot of success with all kinds of peppers, both hot and sweet, and are known throughout their social circles for their pickled hot peppers. The homemade salsa verde is another favourite, made from their own tomatillos.

There is also dedicated space for herbs, which are included in the list of things that may end up in the dehydrator and made into teas and spice blends.

Everything they grow is started from seed in a temporary greenhouse erected in the backyard in the early spring where the seedlings get a head start, until they are planted in the ground.

She said it starts with getting the onions in, and then trays of tomatoes and peppers, working through the vegetables that need the most time to produce.

Later the trays of squash, cucumbers and okra take their place in the greenhouse, which McIntosh describes as a jungle.

The plants require a lot of attention when they are that young, so McIntosh and her children spend quite a bit of time there.

“It’s my little haven,” she said. “I have a full-time job, I am a mom to three and we choose to do as much as we can, as natural as possible so everything is a little more work but it’s the way that we choose to live and it brings us a lot of pleasure.”

She said they are learning a lot about the lifecycle of plants and how to care for them.

Being that this is her first time homesteading in town she is creative in the way she maximizes space but it also has the added benefit of offering a way for the family to connect with their neighbours.

“I’m always sharing seedlings and our harvest

with the neighbours and friends, and the things that we make because the community aspect is so important to me,” said McIntosh.

She said growing and sharing, knowing that it’s organic and heirloom and exactly what is going into it, makes it all the better.

McIntosh said she has learned all about gardening from books, a network of people who homestead and a lot of trial and error. She said she is a blissful optimist and had to learn some lessons the hard way, meaning there were disappointments along the way.

“But once something works, you kinda get the bug,” said McIntosh.

Last year, during the pandemic, McIntosh said she and Martin did what they could to encourage and support others who were looking to start growing.

They have traded seedlings and bartered, and are now selling them. Each year, the children can be found selling some extra produce in their own little custommade veggie stand at the end of their driveway on George Street. The proceeds from which are theirs for whatever tickles their fancy, said Mom. Adair’s recent profit of $90 is being donated to the Georgian Triangle Humane Society.

by Trina Berlo Even before the snow melted this spring, the trails were calling to me. I was compelled by the promise of a change of scenery, bolstered by good weather, and enticed by the possibility of seeing other humans, albeit from a safe distance.

Although I have enjoyed my home, and there is planning to be done for the garden in early spring, there was a definite need to get the heck out of dodge and find a way to enjoy life without breaking any public health rules.

I enlisted the help of the family navigator who, armed with the most recent copy of The Bruce Trail Reference Maps and Trail Guide published by Bruce Trail Conservancy, set out to plan some hikes that would ease the doldrums of a pandemic, improve our physical and mental health, and allow us to safely explore the area.

By mid-March, we found ourselves slipping and sliding, sometimes crawling, down paths of shear ice.

We were not the only ones out there.

The trails had been very well used, obviously tamped down by a steady parade of snowshoers and shoe grippers, those better equipped than us. The trails had clearly been well used throughout

the entire winter.

With each new place, we found ourselves saying, “I can’t believe we’ve never been here before.”

Over the past two decades, The Navigator and I have done a fair bit of exploring in the near-wilds of Ontario, often opting for a boat of some kind as our conveyance. Aside from some destination hikes (and one very ambitious attempt at the Lion’s Head section of The Bruce Trail that almost ended our marriage) we have

THE CREEMORE ECHO • Friday, May 21, 2021 • not taken advantage of a world-class trail that practically runs through our backyard. We have experienced the trail’s headliners in the past being Nottawasaga Bluffs, Old Baldy, The Grotto, and Eugenia Falls and having family in Tobermory, I have spent decades exploring the northern part of The Bruce Trail, but it is the spaces between that continually impress us.

As we work our way through the local sections of the trail we are watching the forest wake up; the cycle of nature revolving as hardy early wildflowers rise to the sun, beating the tree canopy and greeting early pollinators. The tenacious cedars growing on cliff faces and so many organisms we don’t understand, and others we can’t even see, they gift us with life and health when we walk amongst them.

The landscape within a small area can be quite varied. A few hours walk can take one through stunning valleys, craggy rock, and to the escarpment’s edge opening to a vista of Nottawasaga Bay. A person can walk for miles without seeing anyone else in the stretches between the parking lots and main attractions, but those we do meet are usually ready with a friendly greeting as they step aside to let you pass, if they beat you to it. The odd person will stop to chat but most people keep on trucking in what I can only presume is a type of trail trance. There is something that happens to the human brain when

walking, or doing a menial task, that allows your mind to wander just enough, and the eyes are able to soften their focus in a way that is quite relaxing.

Membership for the Bruce Trail Conservancy across the province is a record high of 12,000 members, said Melina Cormier, communications director for The Dufferin Hi-land Bruce Trail Club, whose area spans from Mono Centre to Lavender. She said the club has seen a fairly dramatic jump of 30 per cent in the last year, to just over 600 members. As of early April, the Blue Mountains club, whose territory is from Lavender to Craigleith, is reporting a 39 per cent membership increase, to 944.

“Increased visitation has magnified both opportunities and challenges that were already present, including trail management,” said Elizabeth Harrington, director of communications and engagement for BTC. “Overcrowding, threats to the natural environment, and threats to landowner relationships are to name a few. Our philosophy is centered around our mission, where we provide naturebased experiences while also protecting the sensitive species and habitats along the Niagara Escarpment. Therefore, positive trail user behaviour is critical.

For example, hiking along the marked routes, avoiding ‘off-trail’ use will ensure that sensitive vegetation is not damaged, and relationship with private landowners who graciously allow the (Continued on page 16)

Increased use not without growing pains

On April 21, 1962, Bruce Trail founding member Harvey Currell reported in the Toronto Telegram, where he was editor, that he and six fellow trekkers were embarking on a seven-day 187 km hike to blaze a walking route that would rival the Appalachian or the Pennine Trail, in hopes of sparking a “walking revival.”

Joined by Ray Lowes, Robert Bateman (listed as a Burlington High School and naturalist, not yet a famous painter), Harry McCartney, Aubrey Diem, Bob Crosson and Chuck Harris the group was scoping out a route to inform the work of Guelph real estate consultant Philip Gosling, who was tasked by the Federation of Ontario Naturalists with laying out the actual route.

Because of the increased traffic and carpooling not being allowed under public health guidelines, parking lots are overflowing, especially in the popular destinations.

Blue Mountains Bruce Trail Club president KellyLeigh Thomas said parking has been a big challenge at Pretty River Valley, Metcalfe Rock, Kolapore, Nottawasaga Bluffs and Nottawasaga Lookout.

Harrington said BTC has plans to install a new parking lot in each of the 9 Bruce Trail Club sections in order to help accommodate parking needs.

The Blue Mountains Club is also reporting an alarming increase in graffiti and other forms of vandalism on rocks and trees. Wads of toilet paper, garbage and plenty of full dog poop bags abound.

Hikers are asked to carry out all of their garbage and keep their dogs leashed, for the benefit of nature and the enjoyment of all hikers who share the trail.

“I am optimistic that these growing pains which we are experiencing with the increase in hikers on the trail will pass as people become more aware of the hiker and trail etiquette,” said Thomas.

Trees starting to fall victim to Emerald Ash Borer

by Trina Berlo In the southern portions of the Dufferin Hi-Land section of The Bruce Trail, volunteers are starting to see heavy damage caused by Emerald Ash Borer and increased deadfall is expected in the coming years.

Foresters like Graeme Davis, with the County of Simcoe, are now seeing mass mortality caused by Emerald Ash Borer.

The invasive insect’s presence has been known for close to a decade but the devastation is now widespread and quite visible. He said the good thing is that other types of tree aren’t impacted by the insect.

Emerald Ash Borer larva choke the tree and kill it, causing it to fall. The large burrows beneath the bark of the tree cutting off the nutrients moisture flow. A distinctive serpentine pattern can be seen under the bark.

“This insect is a nasty one,” said Davis. “The level of mortality is extremely high.”

“The majority of our ash trees, when they reach a certain size, they simply don’t seem to have any immunity against the Emerald Ash Borer,” said Davis.

The hope is that the species will have a comeback as Emerald Ash Borer populations start to level off. This happens as the insect kills more trees, in addition to natural pathogens that are catching up with the bug and the use of bio controls.

Some ash trees are being protected, with treatment, and there are lots of young ash saplings growing on the forest floor.

“The likelihood is that we will have very few ash trees for quite some time, certainly mature ash trees, but the hope is that there will be an equilibrium that will be reached in the future so that we’ll have a bit of a comeback. The expectation is that Emerald Ash Borer will be here to stay but it will be hopefully much less devastating than it has been this time around,” said Davis.

Dufferin Hi-Land Bruce Trail Club communications director Melina Cormier said the club has already started to plant new trees in locations where they expect to lose a significant number of ash trees.

Programs promote youth hiking Dufferin Hi-land Bruce Trail Club is now offering a free Young Hiker Badge to those 13 years of age or younger who complete one or more hikes on the Dufferin Hi-land section that is a minimum of three kilometres long, or that takes at least one hour.

To claim the badge just send in a hike log with the date, location, distance and duration of the hike. Be sure to include contact information where an adult can be reached, along with a Bruce Trail membership number if the family has one.

Henry Little is well on his way to reaching his goal of completing an end-to-end of The Bruce Trail, and he’s only seven years old.

Little, who goes by Henry the Hiker on social media, took up hiking with his mom Carola (who also manages the social media channels) as a way of getting out and stretching their legs while homeschooling at their Mulmur home during the pandemic.

The Bruce Trail crosses their property so it was easy to access.

Little can be seen on the trail wearing his custom Henry the Hiker T-shirts and his own backpack containing water and snacks, waving and saying hello to other hikers and passing cars. His adventures are being documented as a way of inspiring others to take a hike.

When we caught up with Little he had completed more than 100 kilometres of trail since September.

At their most ambitious, they did back-to-back 10-kilometre hikes and they were pretty tired so they learned the optimal length is about six kilometres.

A highlight, said Little, was when he saw a porcupine climbing a tree. They caught the sighting on video which is posted on the Henry the Hiker YouTube channel.

“Just based on an egg mass count, indications are that there will be quite a large hatch again this year, however – and there’s always a large but – there are many other factors at play here which will determine just what kind of a season we have with Gypsy Moth,” said Davis.

“These things are always cyclical. They will go through a boom and bust cycle and the big question is whether this year will be another complete boom year or whether it will be the bust.”

One thing that would have helped to reduce the population is winter temperatures of -20ºC and that didn’t happen.

However, the egg masses are threatened by parasites, a virus and a fungus that will eventually lead to the collapse of the population, although the timing could differ across the county.

“There is quite a high likelihood that that virus could take hold and start to kill off the caterpillars shortly after they hatch and could really reduce the overall impact of the Gypsy Moth. The problem is

we can’t say that for certain,” said Davis.

Homeowners may have tried to remove the egg sacks but in some areas they are just too plentiful and it is almost impossible to get to all of them, especially if they are high up in the trees. Davis said the egg masses are also on the ground and other hard-to-see places, so eradicating them can be very tricky, if not impossible.

The only other course of action is to have the trees treated with a bacterial insecticide, either by injection or aerial spray, which can be costly.

The county does not take any action against the caterpillars, because although they are pesky to people trying to enjoy the outdoors, and they do feast aggressively on leaves, most trees fully recover from an infestation so they are not considered a serious threat to the health of the forest.

“Although you will get some trees that certainly will be stressed, especially if they’re completely defoliated. Most hardwood trees for example, will leaf out a second time and although it does impact their reserves in most cases an overall forest area, the longer term impacts will be quite modest,” said Davis.

“It’s a really substantial nuisance for us. I think even more so right now with everyone spending so much time at home and with everyone being cooped up all winter, we’re going to want to get outside and this is not something that’s conducive to us enjoying [our properties].”

Designing for the post-Covid home

by Chris McKenzie Everyone is shushing each other at home these days. I hear this from many of my clients and I am not sure that this admonition will go away any time soon.

I was recently asked to enclose rooms in a home with an open-concept design for sound control. They are specialist physicians operating from home with three school-age children all taking online classes at the same time – hence the shushing.

The functioning requirements of home will not be the same post-Covid.

With faster internet connectivity on the horizon, we will continue to conduct business, shop, run a household, be entertained and educated from home suggesting the need for dedicated spaces to operate from.

I’m an advocate of a small homehub office space with proximity to the kitchen and main floor laundry room to bounce from changing a load of laundry, to a call with a client, to making a quick meal. It’s also a space where we pay bills, research health and food preparation, email, and arrange family activities in addition to supervising homework, running a small business, and shopping online.

It’s life! And we will not want all this happening from the kitchen table in this home/business/school/gym/movie theatre world we are living in.

The former part-time home office is now full time and it needs a sound proof door. Sit / stand desks are the rage, along with bookcases or staged walls for on screen backdrops. Unless you like looking like you are streaming from Mars, take heed, folks can’t help judging your décor.

New home clients are trading off living rooms for covered rear porches with fireplaces to extend the season outdoors. Kid bedrooms include proper schoolwork desks with many clients moving away from basement offices – my husband calls his, “The salt mine.” Secret pantries behind cabinet elevations are popular along with small second or catering kitchens. The concealed kitchen is great for home entertaining which will explode postCovid.

I encourage clients to examine spaces to see what can be reclaimed.

When looking for a spot for a builtin desk consider under the stairs.

Partitioning off large mechanical rooms or storage rooms can create a place for work or crafts. The former basement home office can be converted to a

home-gym for that shiny new Peloton bike. Fitness trainers will be online so we will need a home gym.

A good designer is a problemsolver, artist, curator, and a sometimes marriage therapist who can easily move from one role to the other and is not afraid of change. The adept designer will study how a family spends time in the home to better understand their lifestyle requirements. It is no longer just about space planning and beautiful interior furnishings and more about problem solving and creating functioning spaces that will work for everyone in the way we will live in the future.

FRYER (Beattie) Julie Elizabeth June 30, 1966- May 12, 2021.

Julie passed away at the Stratford Memorial Hospital, after a brief but hard fought battled with Covid-19.

Julie was welcomed home into the arms of her mother Elizabeth Beattie (predeceased) and will be deeply missed by her father Donald Beattie who she leaves behind. She is profoundly missed by her husband Brian Fryer who was blessed to call her his sweetheart for 33 years.

Dedicated and supportive mother to Joshua Fryer, and Amanda Fryer.

Julie will be tremendously missed by her siblings Gordon, Donna, and Margaret. She was an affectionate and fun-loving Nanny to her four grandchildren Dawson, Haylee, Lilia, and Kaleb who she adored to the moon and back. Julie will also be missed by her sidekick Bev, her special friends, cousins, and extended family. Julie will be remembered most for her boisterously contagious laugh, her mischievous sense of humor, her loving/caring heart, and for her endless gifts of selfless acts of love to those that she took under her wing.

The family would like to thank many friends and neighbours for taking the time to share words of encouragement and support with Julie in her final hours. Julie was able to leave this earth knowing how much she was loved. At Julie’s request, cremation has taken place. Due to Covid-19 a private gathering will be held and a celebration of life at a later date.
