Neighbours create lending library for community By Trina Berlo Marilyn Badger (left) and her neighbour Doris Parry have been doing a lot of reading and sharing of books this past year, so much so that they have built up quite a collection. Badger began to wonder what she was going to do with all these books and when she had the inspiration to set up a lending library at The Red Door Cottage, her home at 4 George St., she knew just who to ask. Badger asked Doris’ husband Fred Parry if he could put his carpentry skills to work. “I have a lot of ideas but no talent, but Fred has a lot of talent and a lot of equipment,” said Badger laughing. The little library is available to everyone to take a book or leave a book. It is already stocked with a variety of material, including children’s books. The community is encouraged to take advantage of it whenever they wish.

Cases on the decline in Simcoe Muskoka by Trina Berlo Things are looking up in Simcoe Muskoka with a reduction in cases of COVID-19 and a high uptake of vaccine helping to bring the pandemic under control, reports the region’s medical officer of health Dr. Charles Gardner. He said the provincial stay-athome order is working to contain the virus and he would hope to see cases reduced well below 1,000 cases per day across Ontario before lifting the lockdown, which is expected to be extended into June. Gardner said the order is working to stop the spread and has alleviated the pressure on the local health care system. Simcoe Muskoka has seen a 21 per

cent reduction in cases and a steady decline since the peak of the third wave in mid April. This week, Gardner is reporting 11 deaths, bringing the total mortality to 233. Thirty-one people are in hospital with high occupancy rates for ICU beds and ventilators. Creemore’s Creedan Valley is listed as one of two current outbreaks and is categorized as having fewer than five resident cases and fewer than five staff cases. Improvements across all assessment areas and lower case counts will allow Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit staff to return to a more thorough approach to case and contact tracing, said Gardner. In terms of immunization, Gardner

said 36 per cent of the population of Simcoe Muskoka has received a first dose of vaccine. “We are making strong progress in protecting the older population and certainly look forward to protecting the younger populations and there is a great acceleration through this month of the eligibility groups towards the end of May,” he said. As of May 13, members of the general population who are 40 and older will be able to register for a vaccine through the provincial booking system, but Gardner warns this may not mean that people will be able to book an appointment immediately. Other high priority groups who were the first to receive vaccines may

soon be eligible to book a second vaccine earlier than planned. A standby list is now available for same day COVID-19 vaccination appointments in Simcoe Muskoka for those who are eligible and can get to an appointment within 45 minutes of receiving a call. For more information about COVID-19, how to add your name to the standby list, and who is eligible for an appointment, please visit our COVID-19 pages at www.smdhu. org and click on the “Getting your Vaccination” tab.
