Manfred and Janneke Leimgardt didn't want to let the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Holland go by without any recognition. On May 5, they invited people to share their stories and say thank you, Canada. her hometown of Wijk en Aalburg in 1945 and she was 13 at the time of the liberation. Manfred says she is still treated like a celebrity when she returns, everyone remembers the story. There are 2,000
soldiers buried there in the Bergen-op Zoom War Cemetery and Manfred said he can easily spend hours there walking amongst the graves, not one soldier having lived past the age of 30. (See “Recalling” on page 8)

Marking 75 years of liberation by Trina Berlo Manfred and Janneke Leimgardt didn’t want the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Holland to go by without any acknowledgment. They had planned a family trip to Holland, to visit Janneke’s hometown and the graves of the soldiers buried in the cemetery there. The trip was called off so the family could welcome a new baby but it turns out they wouldn’t have been able to travel at this time anyway. The pandemic also put the kibosh on Clearview’s annual Tulip Days event, which would have marked the special anniversary, so the Leimgardts welcomed family and community members to gather in the driveway of their Stayner home to share stories and remember. The Dutch do a very good job of remembering, said Manfred. In Holland, schoolchildren are assigned to the graves of fallen allied soldiers who helped to liberate their country, to care for and learn their story. New COVID-19 cases in Clearview Simcoe Muskoka’s medical officer of health says the local curve is flat but there continues to be community spread. Four new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Clearview this month, all community acquired. A man in his 30s, and three women – one in her 80s, one in her 30s, and one in her 20s – have tested positive for the virus, bringing the total to six cases. (Two travel related cases were reported in March. Both of whom have recovered.) As of presstime, the total of lab confirmed tested cases in the Simcoe Muskoka region reached 344, with 326 of those being in Simcoe. Half of those have recovered, 24 have died and seven are in hospital. He said it will be some time before cases start to decline so people need to be careful about going out, and maintain physical distancing measures.
Lighting up ballparks The lights will be replaced with LED at all of Clearview’s ball parks. Council had budgetted $50,000 for the replacement of the lights at the New Lowell diamond but the price came in much lower than expected. When it was discovered an energy saving grant was still available, staff went back to council with a request to extend the project to Nottawa, and the tennis courts at Ives Park. All 71 lights will cost $36,661. The rebate is estimated to equal $20,300 and there will be about $3,000 in energy savings for switching to LED, reported Parks, Culture & Recreation department general manager Terry Vachon. “Price is right. Timing’s right and rebates are still available so I think it’s an excellent opportunity to do three for the price of one,” said Councillor Robert Walker. The lights will be installed later, after the pandemic.
