Jean Vanier considers name change
Driver airlifted to hospital after County Road 9 crash
School officials make this week a “Civvies Week” so students have option not to wear uniform bearing Jean Vanier's name by Trina Berlo Jean Vanier Catholic High School is among the many institutions named after religious hero Jean Vanier grappling with how to proceed now that his legacy is tarnished. Students at the local Catholic high school were given the option of not wearing their uniforms this week as school officials review how to best move forward after Vanier was found to have abused women. Vanier, a Canadian philosopher and theologian, is the founder of L’Arche International, a network of more than 154 care communities and 19 projects in 38 countries around the world that support people with intellectual disabilities. He died in May. L’Arche International released the
A driver sustained serious injuries Feb. 22 as a result of a single motor vehicle collision on County Road 9. The crash happened at about 5:30 p.m. The unidentified male driver was subsequently airlifted to a Toronto area hospital. The women each report that Jean Vanier initiated sexual relations with them, usually in the context of spiritual accompaniment… The relationships were found to be manipulative and emotionally abusive,
and had a significant negative impact on their personal lives and subsequent relationships. These actions are indicative of a deep psychological and spiritual hold Jean Vanier had on these women and confirm his own adoption of some of Father Thomas Philippe’s deviant theories and practices.” Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District (See “School” on page 3)
Sunnidale vs New Lowell, a tight race by Trina Berlo With new signs rolling out to Clearview Public Library branches, library officials decided to poll the community to see if they wanted to retain the current name of Sunnidale branch, or change it to the New Lowell branch. People have been voting at polling stations at the library and at New Lowell Legion. Legion president Chuck Arrand, who has been manning the Legion board, says there is a strong show of support for changing the name to New Lowell. But wait!... Over at the library, deputy CAO Michele McKenzie is seeing a different result. Throughout February, voters have had the option of placing a sticker
on a board, casting a paper ballot or answering an online survey. Votes cast at the Legion appear to be leaning toward New Lowell. “If you lived here when it was Sunnidale Township, then you’re holding onto Sunndale. If you’ve moved here in the last 25 years, the name Sunnidale doesn’t mean anything to you and you live in New Lowell so it’s pretty much split, I would say, on when you moved here,” said Arrand. He said there are a significant number of residents who fall into the latter category. Arrand moved to New Lowell seven years ago, so you can guess where his vote went. He said there are a number of people,

including himself, who always assumed it was already called the New Lowell branch. “I think it would alleviate a lot of confusion,” said Arrand. Over at the library, McKenzie said she was gobsmacked to discover that voters were leaning toward keeping the Sunnidale name. The new signage is part of a branding process that Clearview council has already approved and budgeted for. Officials want the new sign to reflect the name chosen by the community. Voting closes at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29. The winner will be announced Tuesday. The online survey is posted at www. clearview.library.on.ca.
