Elementary educators begin full day strikes

by Trina Berlo Creemore educators joined forces with those at New Lowell Central Public School Monday during a full day strike.

It was the first rotating strike by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) to impact Simcoe County.

The union announced later on Monday that it would ramp up strikes to one full member strike and one rotating strike per week until a deal is reached with the province.

On Feb. 6, all 83,000 ETFO members will be out on a one-day strike. In Simcoe County that would result in strikes on both Feb. 5 and 6, if labour agreements are not reached by the end of January.

“There is nothing to be gained by Minister Lecce avoiding meaningful and fair contract talks other than further damaging the reputation of the Ford government,” said ETFO President Sam Hammond in a news (See “ETFO” on page 3)

“From ETFO’s perspective, fair contract talks must include: appropriate funding for special education; a strategy to address classroom violence; maintaining our internationally recognized kindergarten program; fair hiring practices; class sizes that meet the needs of elementary students; and compensation that keeps up with inflation,” said Hammond.

A joint statement from MPP Doug Downey (Barrie-Springwater-OroMedonte), MPP Jill Dunlop (Simcoe North), MPP Andrea Khanjin (Barrie-Innisfil), and MPP Caroline Mulroney (York-Simcoe) said, “We continue to stand up against the withdrawal of services to students in Simcoe County and across the province. Teacher union leaders broke their promise to not adversely impact student learning by withdrawing services for our kids, including EQAO math testing, extracurriculars, and report cards.”

Museum of Dufferin celebrates Black History Month Museum of Dufferin is celebrating Black History month in February with county-wide school participation, a comprehensive exhibition and an insightful panel discussion.

On Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m., Museum of Dufferin will have a flag raising ceremony showcasing the Pan-African flag, also known as the UNIA flag, Afro-American flag, Black Liberation flag, and various other names.

The tri-color flag consisting of three equal horizontal bands of red, black and green was designed by Marcus Garvey in 1920 and was intended as an expression of black liberation. This flag will stand tall at the Museum for the month of February celebrating support for diversity and inclusiveness.

Other initiatives include a panel discussion on the importance of sharing the history of Black communities through awareness, art and music, Sunday Feb. 23. As well as an exhibition focused on the history of significant contributions and achievements of Black Canadians both past and present in Dufferin County.

This is the first time that the County of Dufferin acknowledges and participates in Black History month.

The Museum of Dufferin is proud to be involved with helping their community learn about those that have contributed in the past and present and to those who are the future of their community.

Ideas for a Green New Deal

A preliminary reporting of what came out of the Pact for a Green New Deal town halls has been released.

The Pact for a Green New Deal is defined as a coalition calling for a far-reaching plan to cut emissions in half in 11 years, in line with Indigenous knowledge and climate science; create more than one million good jobs; and build inclusive communities in the process.

Volunteers organized more than 150 town halls, taking place in every province and territory, to build alignment towards a set of shared principles for a Green New Deal. Locally, town hall meetings held in Creemore and Collingwood were organized by Sherri Jackson (Green Party candidate for Simcoe-Grey).

National organizers say that the exercise reached beyond the so called green bubble but acknowledge there is a lot more work to be done to reach out to those who wouldn’t, or couldn’t, participate in such a meeting.

It really was an interesting exercise, to sit down at a table with a relatively diverse cross section of the community and hear directly from participants their ideas for climate action. One got the sense that participants approached it with bravery, in that they were willing to take risks if it meant a healthier future for the planet. There was also a strong feeling of optimism as people saw climate crisis as an opportunity to build a new and better community. And there was hope for what it could mean to be part of a new green economy.

Participants were asked to discuss their red lines and green lines: “the things that absolutely should not be in a Green New Deal for Canada, and the things that people, groups, communities and institutions want, and in some cases, need to see in a Green New Deal in order to be on board.”

Nationally, participants tabled a total of 8,900 ideas.

A more complete synopsis of what came out of the workshops is posted at greennewdealcanada.ca but here’s how they summed it up: Green Line categories: Economy and government, green infrastructure, nature, agriculture, social justice, democracy, plastics, climate science, decent work, Indigenous reconciliation, climate debt, and rights. (Of these categories, the ones that occurred most frequently were economy and government, green infrastructure, social justice, and Indigenous sovereignty. It is clear that systemic change and radical shifts are needed to transform the systems and institutions that perpetuate inequality, racism, xenophobia, and ongoing colonial violence.)

Red line categories: Town hall participants talked about putting a stop to the industries, institutions and practices that endanger our future and accelerate environmental destruction. Some of the red lines that came up discussed the fossil fuel industry, extraction and pollution, plastics, and a failing democracy.

The Green New Deal is inspired by The New Deal, which helped raise the United States out of the Great Depression through infrastructure programs and financial reform.

Editor: I strongly support Mayor Measures in the effort to reverse the roundabout decision. Compare clearing the Airport Road/Highway 26 intersection with clearing the Mosley roundabout. At Airport Road you’re backed up and idling half the time due to the lights.

At Mosley you rarely have to stop.

If the environmental impact and CO2 emission costs were truly accounted for, increased land acquisition costs for the roundabout could be justified.

Superior traffic flow makes it a no-brainer.

Ward system is failing Clearview citizens Editor: The letter of Mr. Witzke identifying his concerns over “acclaimed” councillors was a wake-up call against the abysmal ward-based representation system currently used in Clearview. It is this ward system that is failing the citizens of Clearview by allowing an ever-increasing number of non/never elected councillors to be making the decisions for our community.

Most Ontario municipalities function well with five elected members. If Clearview was using the at-large based voting system to select five representatives there would have been sufficient

candidates at the last election to select, by majority vote, a full slate of councillors drawn from across the community without having any “acclaimed” representatives. The ward system disallows a choice of the best representatives drawn from across Clearview by requiring that candidates live in specific ward.

With the upcoming acclamation of the “runner up” in Ward 1, Clearview taxpayers will only be represented by five elected representatives.

If anyone else resigns or passes away then the majority of our council will not have been voted (See “Campaign” on page 5)

New job description for parents of teens

Campaign aims to bring in at-large representation

by Liz van Ryn Do you ever wish that you had a job description that told you exactly what you are supposed to do with your teenager?

Well good news folks – it is here!

Most job descriptions start with a brief description of the general purpose of the position, followed by the duties and responsibilities. However, in this case, since there has been so much confusion about what the parent of a teen is supposed to do, we are going to start with a review of what you might have thought your job was. Version 1.0 is as follows.

Purpose of job: To make teen happy and ensure that they succeed.

Duties and responsibilities: • Keeping your teen organized (AKA being their frontal lobe); • Worrying on behalf of your teen so that they don’t have to; • Snowplowing the path in front of your teen; • Being a receptacle for &%$# your teen needs to unload; • Providing rescue services for when your teen gets themselves in trouble; • Alleviating or fixing any problems that may result in emotional upset and/ or discomfort for your teen; • Lecturing your teen on the

The semantic argument supported by archaic religious doctrine promoted by a relative of the councillor who has never been voted into her position on council is an indication of why Mr. Witzke’s simple statement should be of concern to those of us paying taxes that are being increasingly used for purposes that do not benefit or improve the living conditions of the taxpayers of Clearview.

If this council had any interest in ensuring that the taxpayers of Clearview were receiving value for their money, they would immediately change the voting system from ward to at-large along with a commensurate reduction in the number of elected councillors from 9 to 5.

With a total of 11,903 registered voters in the 2018 election it will take the signatures of just 120 of those registered voters to bring the ward versus at-large concern back to council.

In considering the revisions for Version 1.0 we felt that it included way too many volunteer hours and add-on services for your teen. The hours spent driving them when they miss the bus, negotiating with teachers, keeping their calendars updated, and “helping” them with their projects seemed like all too much. Not to mention the energy drain of sitting beside them on their emotional rollercoaster to ensure that they don’t fall off the track. In the interests of your sanity and their maturity we decided to cut out all of the above tasks from your job description. The new streamlined Parenting Teens Job Description version 2.0 is as follows.

Purpose of job: To support the social, emotional, and psychological growth of your teen so that they can learn to handle the challenges life will present to them.

Duties and responsibilities: • Role model the behavior and attitudes you want to see growing in your teen; • Set boundaries for yourself and your teen based on your values; • Set limits for your teen that fit the level of responsibility they are demonstrating;

• See your child for who they are and not who you expect them to be; • Provide guidance and mentoring by listening and offering ideas that respect your teen’s autonomy; • Help them find their own solutions to their problems by listening (again!) and being curious – without judgement; • Manage your own emotions so that your teen can learn to regulate theirs; • Let go of trying to control the outcome and hold your teen accountable instead.

You might notice that most of these items involve making changes that would benefit you in many other areas of your life. This is your bonus gift for taking on the task of raising a teenager.

In all seriousness, it is not easy to shift the way we parent, particularly when our teen is struggling. Your new job description will create discomfort for you and your teen as you shift the emphasis from making them happy to allowing them to fail, experience the consequences of their choices, and discover their capability. The growth that will come from this for both you and your teen will last a lifetime, and that seems well worth it.

Starting Feb. 3, curbside waste collection in the County of Simcoe is changing to garbage and recycling collection on alternating weeks, with green bin collection continuing weekly.

The schedule will start during the week of Feb. 3-7 with garbage and green bin collection. The following week, Feb. 10-14, residents will receive recycling and green bin collection. Collections will alternate on this schedule moving forward. Collection days are not changing; however, collection times will be adjusted.

Residents are reminded to have materials out to their curb by 7 a.m. on their regular collection day.

This change to collection frequency of some materials will support the environment by growing our green bin program, encourage a reduction in singleuse materials, and help to lower emissions with fewer trucks on the road each day. It will also help restore consistency to our collection service by addressing past labour issues experienced by our contractor and allow the county to better manage long-term contractual costs, which are rising throughout the waste management industry.

To provide convenience to residents, recycling materials can now be mixed together into bins, seethrough plastic bags or cardboard boxes, and no longer need to be separated. This is called single-stream recycling, and sorting of materials will occur later in the process.

This new alternating schedule, combined with the move to single-stream recycling, allows the county to run one truck to each household on collection days instead of two in the previous program. Each truck has two compartments, so the two streams of materials set out each week will remain separated and processed appropriately.

Quilters support Australian wildlife rescue efforts

by Trina Berlo Local sewers have answered the call for support from Australia’s wildlife rescue community.

Creemore House of Stitches hosted two charity sewing days, making koala mittens one day, and joey pouches on the other.

It is estimated more than one billion animals have been killed in Australia’s bushfires and wildlife rescue centres are frantically trying to keep up as they care for those suffering from burns and food shortages.

Creemore House of Stitches owner Cheryl Robertson said it was a nice way to bring people together to sew and show support for Australia. Robertson donated the fabric but the labour was volunteer.

Quilters from all over the world have been answering the call for donations.

As the fires move, wildlife rescue centres that have ample supplies are passing them on to the next area affected by fire.

Joey pouches are used to comfort orphaned baby kangaroos robbed of their mother’s pouch. They have handles and can be hung on a fence or in a tree while the joeys are convalescing from their burn wounds. The koala mittens are used to treat koala bears whose hands have been burned. Others are making bat wraps and blankets.

Quilters are also sending contributions of Bushfire Tree Blocks to the Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild.

New South Wales communities devastated by bushfire will be receiving quilts compiled from these tree blocks being created around the world.

Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild said the tree is a symbol of growth and

nourishment, symbolizing generations of a family.

“We would love our quilts to be beautiful and diverse just like our wonderful communities,” said organizers.

Museum Skate Trail open The Simcoe County Museum Skate Trail, which travels around the Museum’s heritage buildings, historic equipment displays, and forest pathways spans more than one kilometre in length.

Health unit preparing for coronavirus While the risk of the new coronavirus remains low for our region, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is putting in place measures to protect residents should the virus appear.

“The virus has not been identified in Canada, but we know that diseases don’t respect borders and can spread,” said Dr. Charles Gardner, Medical Officer of Health for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. “Based on our previous experience with SARS, we know we have to be ready if and when it appears, and that means working with both the province and our health care partners to ensure we have a coordinated response.”

The health unit is actively working within its infectious diseases emergency response plan, provincial screening recommendations are being provided to health care facilities, and the disease is now reportable to public health, meaning that public health can track and investigate cases of the disease and close contacts.

The coronavirus is a new respiratory virus with pneumonia-like symptoms that emerged in Wuhan City, China, late last year. Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause illness from the common cold to more severe diseases, such as SARS. Although this new strain of coronavirus probably originated in animals, person-to-person spread may now be occurring.

Human coronaviruses most commonly spread

from an infected person to others just like influenza or a cold by coughing and sneezing, close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands, or touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes. Symptoms are usually mild to moderate and can include runny nose, headache, cough, sore throat, and a general feeling of being unwell.

If you have a fever and symptoms of lower respiratory illness (cough and feeling unwell) and have travelled from Wuhan City, China in the 14 days before your symptoms started, or have been in close contact with a person who may have this infection, you should be assessed by a health care provider. If at all possible, make sure to call ahead to let them know you’re coming so that infection control measures can be put in place.

You can protect yourself by washing your hands often with soap and water, or using an alcoholbased hand sanitizer if your hands are not visibly dirty.

You can help to reduce the spread of respiratory infections such as coronavirus by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing and by staying home when you are sick.

Church of the Good Shepherd celebrating 150 years

by Myrna Johnson This Sunday, Feb. 2, Area Bishop the Right Rev. Peter Fenty will be visiting the Church of the Good Shepherd in Stayner.

One hundred and fifty years ago, Feb. 1870, a meeting was held to arrange for the building of a church in the village of Stayner, formerly known as Dingwall or Nottawasaga Station.

The Rev. W.R. Forster was to minister in Stayner, in addition to his parish in Creemore.

Mr. Thomas Stayner donated the land and $200 toward building of the church. According to the records Mr. R. J. Cole, the Station Agent, and Mr. E.B. Sanders, a lawyer, were the first wardens. Mr. E.B. Sanders was also elected as the delegate to Synod in the Diocese of Toronto. Other members of the building committee included: Mr. J.G. Algeo, whose family was one of the first to settle West of the Holland River; Mr. A. M. Ingersol, who was a returning officer when the village was incorporated later in

1872; Mr. R. Coleman, who was a railroad contractor and built the first Queen’s hotel; Mr. D.A. Stewart, a Scottish merchant; Mr. H. Seeler, a Councillor for Sunnidale; Mr. Collins, and Mr. Ira Belfry who were local farmers. Also present at the initial meeting were Mr. W. B. Saunders, Mr. J. Collins, Mr. A Geyer, Mr. W. Reid, Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Oram, Mr. T. Cross, Mr. Thompson and Mr. H. Cheeseman.

The name chosen for the new church was The Church of the Good Shepherd.

Cut and Dried Flower Farm has an employment opening for a Greenhouse Worker to assist in growing and selling a range of plants at our farm in Glencairn. If you love people and plants and are looking for a fun, part time seasonal job to keep you busy and fit this spring then why not turn your passion into a job with us?

Applicants must be available to work full days, varying from 2 to 5 days a week from late February to mid June, including weekends.

The successful applicant will be physically fit and energetic with gardening experience and outstanding customer service skills.
