Creating financial balance for home ownership A construction crew is back to work this month building two homes on Quebec Street in Stayner. After a delay, the Habitat for Humanity project is back on track, with volunteers and the future homeowners working away on a beautiful blue wood sided duplex.

Each three-bedroom home is about 1,000 square feet with a full basement, that is unfinished but has plumbing roughed in. The units will be home to a couple with a two-year-old son and a single mom with two sons.

Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay Executive Director Joy Fleury said the program helps people who are spending a large portion of their income trying to keep a roof over their heads.

Habitat for Humanity sets people up in a home with an interest-free mortgage. Only 25 per cent of the owners’ gross combined family income goes toward a combined mortgage and property tax payment.

“That frees up income to save for school or a car,” said Fluery. “All sorts of things that when housing takes up 70 per cent of your income, the basics, which most of us take for granted, aren’t available.”

Habitat for Humanity is founded on the belief that decent, affordable housing is a basic human right. It partners with low-income families, who currently live in substandard

Fleury said there is a group of volunteers taking the project into the home stretch throughout the summer but they are looking for more volunteers, of all skill levels.

Habitat for Humanity broke ground

at the Stayner site in October but the build had a set back because of delays in securing permits from the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority. They made up some time by working with Royal Homes, who agreed to bring in the pre-fab frame which was then closed in thanks to donations by AM Roofing Solutions, Van Dolders, Maibec Siding, and Gentek Aluminum and Advanced Door Systems, before

shutting down construction in January.

But everyone is back at it now.

Fleury said the build is a very important part of the process.

“It’s the community welcoming the families and wrapping their arms around them,” she said.

This is the third build in Stayner and Habitat for Humanity has two more Stayner properties lined up to sever and rezone for the construction of another two duplexes. Applications are now being accepted for the next homeowners.

People can support the organization by volunteering and donating to a build, or shopping at and donating to the Habitat ReStore at 155 Sandford Fleming Drive in Collingwood.

When you make a donation to Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay, every dollar of your gift goes directly towards building homes with families in need. Profits from the ReStore, which sells quality new and used donated building materials and other products, cover 100 per cent of administrative costs.

People are also invited to participate in their big charity golf tournament on June 20 at Cranberry Golf Club, or donate a prize.

THE WAY WE WERE

In this special edition of The Creemore Echo, celebrating all things Home & Garden, we have learned about the benefits of choosing native plants and the devastating consequences of invasive species.

The former supports all kinds of life while the latter chokes it out. In between, there are non-native species that don’t do as much harm but at the same time, don’t do as much good either.

Many non-native species are invasive, altering the ecosystem of an area. The unfamiliar plants don’t provide as much food and shelter for insects and animals. That means they are taking up valuable real estate in fields and forests, and even the garden, without supporting life and upholding their place in the food chain.

It makes sense therefore that we should opt for native plants as often as possible. We must educate ourselves on what plants support which life forms.

Our choices, in our yards and as society as a whole, can support the birds, bees and butterflies that spread seed and pollinate to the critters that bring us so much joy when we catch a glimpse of them. Some species survive on one specific type of plant so if you want to attract a certain type of butterfly, you can do so by having a healthy crop of its host plant – monarchs and milkweed are an obvious example.

It is all part of a promising trend to go native and be conscious of the ecosystem that is striving to achieve balance in the face of invading species that tip the scale.

Let's make this town plastic-free Editor: The last straw (plastic and proverbial) for me was a video going around the internet of a sea turtle hopelessly tangled in some kind of plastic netting, the kind that holds everything from potatoes to firewood to onions and avocados.

A kind man was desperately trying to free the poor creature using a pen knife. Images like these are everywhere these days – islands of plastic waste, whales cut open to reveal bellies filled with grocery bags and disposable water bottles, seabirds strangled by pop-can holders and pull-up tops.

If you’re like me you want to do something. You console yourself with the fact that of course you recycle. All that plastic you can’t help bringing home because, after all, everything is wrapped in plastic now, you dutifully put in your blue box each week.

Problem solved.

Except it isn’t. Only about 10 per cent of those plastics actually get recycled. The rest are incinerated or go to landfill or end up in the ocean. Surely a far better strategy is for all of us to use less plastic, particularly single-use plastics like water bottles, grocery bags, plastic cutlery, food containers, tampon applicators, coffee and drinking cups, straws, dental

floss, the list is endless.

But using less plastic is not as easy as it sounds as a trip through any grocery store aisle will tell you.

And it’s not realistic to think we are going to break our addiction overnight. Plastic is so much a part of our lives that we hardly notice we’re using it. Until we start paying attention. So aside from taking our refillable mugs with us to Tim Hortons what can we do? An article in the May 11 Globe and Mail offers lots of ideas for individuals.

But I believe that collectively we can do even more, that we can turn Creemore (and possibly Clearview) into a plastics-free community. Last year The Council of Canadians recognized the little town of Bayfield, Ontario, as North America’s first “plastics-free community.” If they can do it couldn’t we?

Landscape architects invited to submit Village Green designs

by Inese Bite Five landscape architectural firms were invited in early May to submit a design concept for the Creemore Village Green.

The community’s wish list for this space was clearly expressed in the Design Brief and Report by small, the consulting form that led the public consultation, and provided the criteria for selecting these firms.

Four key ideas are essential to the redesigned Village Green space: • Connector. The community wants an active hub, gathering space, and community nerve centre.

• Placemaker. The community wants the space to showcase what is unique, valued and local.

• Attractor. The community wants the space to spark new experiences, encourage multiple visits and promote activity.

• Landmark. The community wants the space to increase regional tourism through new programming and a unique design.

Practical solutions are required to bring these concepts to life. Because the best possible design for the Village Green is of utmost importance to the Creemore Community Foundation (the Foundation) as to well as the community, only firms with portfolios demonstrating experience such creating

• Socially inclusive spaces that serve all members of a community such as Creemore’s villagers, the rural population, and weekenders.

• Multi-functional, multi-season landscapes that support horticultural gardens, cultural activities, children’s play, and quiet meditative settings.

• Projects that serve as a revitalization catalyst of commercial sectors of a shopping street by serving community groups such as farmers’ markets and BIA districts.

• Updated spaces that are compatible with and honour heritage architecture and landscapes and buildings • Sustainable environments and ecologically sensitive solutions by environmentally-accredited staff.

• Public places that “sell” the locale with landmark or iconic qualities and therefore become desired destinations.

• Spaces that encourage more public life by supporting everyday life functionality.

Firms with such experience are generally larger firms recognized as leaders in the field. Although some have questioned whether such firms would be interested in a small project like the Village Green, Stuart Lazier

is looking for a new first. Creemore had one of the first craft breweries and one of the first local product farmers’ markets. The Village Green is a symbol of renewed investment in small communities and forward thinking – another first.”

Proposals were due on May 15.

The Build Team plans to make a recommendation of one firm to the Foundation by May 24.

Insects can have a positive impact on the garden and are an important part of a healthy ecosystem. Certain plants attract certain living things and the right plants will support life in the garden throughout the year.

Take milkweed for example, Monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed. It is well-known that milkweed is essential to the life of Monarch butterflies so in order to attract them to the garden or support the health of their population, plant milkweed or allow it to grow wild. A reduction in the amount of milkweed is linked to the reduced number of butterflies hibernating in Mexico.

THE CREEMORE ECHO • Friday, May 17, 2019 • a hard day of planting and weeding, sitting back and enjoying a visit from the birds and butterflies is one of the most rewarding garden experiences.

There is more to be considered in the garden than meets the eye. From the flower to the root, it is all part of an interconnected natural ecosystem that supports life. Each species exists in relation to another, with each one depending on the other for life.

Native plants do more to support life than others.

According to wildlife expert Doug Tallamy, a professor at University of Delaware, some non-native trees do little to support life but an oak tree can support hundreds of species of caterpillars, an essential food source for baby birds and mammals.

Flowers, trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers create habitat for all levels of the food chain. Ferns are a good native alternative to hostas, or to intersperse with other non-native plants.

Bugs will burrow into the hollowed out stalks of grasses, roll up in a leaf or burrow into the dirt so it is important not to clean up the garden too much in the fall. Birds will continue to eat seeds and hide them for later.

For the birds Plant a variety of native seed- and berry-producing plants that produce food at different times of the year, and nectar sources for hummingbirds.

Butterflies Attracting butterflies with native plants – Asters, Black Eyed Susan, Prairie Blazing Star, Echinacea, Ironweed.

The American painted lady or American lady is a butterfly found throughout North America. The larvae feed on various Aster family, such as the cudweeds, the pussytoes, and the everlastings, which all belong to tribe Gnaphalieae. Although it may seem like the larva is putting a strain on the plant, it will bounce right back after the caterpillars have transformed.

The American Lady Butterfly uses pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) as a host plant for its young.

In general, the damage is minimal and the plant fully recovers, although there are exceptions. The flowers are magnets for pollinators such as butterflies and bees, while the plant is said to repel some insects that gardeners may consider bothersome.

Frogs and toads Toads and frogs eat a lot of bugs.

One frog or toad can eat up to 10,000 pests during the garden season.

They need water to procreate and they consume water by absorbing moisture through their skin.

All species need water so having water nearby or adding a water feature nearby helps attract everything from birds to bees but be sure to keep it clean and don’t use chemicals in the water.

If you’re looking to grow more droughttolerant plants and you want something a little different, consider Anaphalis margaritacea. Native to every province in Canada as well as the Yukon and the Northwest Territories, its unique look and tolerance for poor soil could make it the perfect choice for your garden.

Soil retention and habitat The roots of native plants grow much deeper than those of non-native plants which helps to aerate the soil and prevent erosion.

Nesting birds need access to a large amount of caterpillars.

In the case of certain species, thousands of caterpillars are required to feed a clutch of birds.

Plant woody trees like Oak, fruit trees, and Elm. Native trees foster more caterpillars so they are the preferred choice.

Leaving a pile of sticks, logs and brush will provide shelter for chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits and other wildlife, which are part of a healthy natural environment. They can be home to snakes and toads and dead trees can be useful to woodpeckers, hawks and owls.

Opossums are particularly good at grooming themselves, which leads them to swallow most of the ticks that

attach themselves. Based on a study conducted by the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, researchers estimated opossums can kill about 5,000 ticks in one season, and everyone knows ticks have become a health threat because they spread Lyme disease.

Did you know that earthworms are an invasive species?

According to Ontario’s Invading Species Awareness Program, native earthworms from Canada were removed by the last glaciers and of the 19 species confirmed in Ontario, 17 originate from Europe and 2 from the United States. Since the retreat of the glaciers, the forested systems of Ontario have evolved without earthworms and their establishment in these areas significantly threatens the health of the forest lands.

Earthworms have the ability to ingest and mix soils and are known for their contribution as food for wildlife and for use as bait by anglers.

Although in forests where earthworms have invaded, the forest dramatically changes by the absence of a leaflitter layer and exposed mineral soil.

There are no methods to control earthworm populations in natural habitats; preventing new infestations is the best protection.

Youth join battle to contain Garlic Mustard

Garlic Mustard is available in the early spring and high in vitamins A and C, it has a strong, distinctive smell similar to garlic. The following ingredients can be made in the forest with a manual food processor or mashed with and mortar and pestle.

A few cups garlic mustard leaves Couple tbsp oil Pinch of salt, Splash of lemon juice Parmesan cheese to taste A few wild leek greens

After learning about an invasive plant that is taking over forest floors, Evening Heath wanted to take action.

She and friend Dryden Dinsmore learned about Garlic Mustard at Forest School and now that they can identify it, they have found it growing everywhere.

They learned that the plant’s roots release a chemical making the soil around them inhospitable to other plants, making it easier for them to take over the forest.

“I was unhappy because I didn’t like that everything was dying and I wanted to do something to help,” said Heath.

Determined to help combat the spread of the invasive species, they enlisted the help of friends Hazel Dempsey and Izzy Mitchell, to form the Garlic Mustard Squad.

Unlike some other invasive species causing problems in the area, Garlic Mustard is non-toxic and can be pulled by hand. In fact, it is edible. The herb native to Europe was brought imported to North America in the early 1800s. It has a strong odour and flavor similar to garlic. At forest school, Heath and Dinsmore learned how to use the herb to make pesto, which they said was very good.

Garlic mustard has two life stages and it is important to get rid of it before it goes to seed in the second year.

According to Ontario’s Invading Species Program, in the first year, it grows only a cluster of leaves shaped like a rosette, while a strong root system develops. Plants that survive the winter produce flowers and hundreds of seeds in their second year.

Dense stands produce more than 60,000 seeds per square metre. Stands of garlic mustard can double in size every four years. Garlic mustard seeds are easily (Continued on next page)

The plant can grow in a wide range of sunny and fully shaded habitats, including undisturbed forest, forest edges, riverbanks and roadsides. Garlic mustard does not provide a valuable food source for native wildlife.

Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) program director Kristyn Ferguson said the plant has really taken off and continues to spread.

“It has become a significant problem sometimes on of the most significant problems in forested habitats,” she said.

In addition to the plant’s competitive edge gained by altering the chemistry of the soil, here, it has no natural predator so it chokes out native plants that provide a food source for native insects, supporting the natural food chain.

“They take over a forest floor and turn it into a monoculture of nothing but Garlic Mustard cover, and it doesn’t take very long for that to happen, which is why getting to it quickly is one of the best things you can do,” said Ferguson. “The base of the food web in Canada is made up of our native plants.” Native insects feed on those plants and native birds feed on those insects and when you erase the base of the food web you are having potentially catastrophic effects on the food chain, said Ferguson, because non-native plants host only a fraction of the species that a native plant would.

“We are seeing a decline in native birds and invasive species have to be

a big part of that,” she said.

The Garlic Mustard Squad is offering their services to anyone who has Garlic Mustard on their property. They will be out pulling plants on May 25 and will be accepting donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. They are also looking for sponsorships to work on public property.

“We think there is nothing more critical than getting youth involved because this is the next generation that is going to be responsible for helping to clean up some of the messes from the past century or more that have been made in this world,” said Ferguson.

“These kids, getting them out early for these wins. Getting a population of Garlic Mustard feels amazing. So this is going to empower them and make them feel that they can do anything and that’s the attitude we need in this time of environmental crisis. We need more people tuned in so I see these kids as the next generation of potential conservation leaders. You can’t match their energy and enthusiasm and that’s really what it takes to tackle tough environmental problems.”

House with Heart

A year after buying their dream house, Jacquie Rushlow and Andrew Murray are still so enamoured with the work-of-art in which they reside that they were eager to meet its creators.

Finding they were regularly drawn north out of the city, Jacquie and Andrew were looking for a place of their own to escape to. When they found a beautiful and truly unique house nestled into acres of forest near Dunedin, they knew they were about to undertake a huge life change. In order to purchase the house, they would have to sell their house in Toronto and become full-time country dwellers.

They both work in the television industry and are usually working on-set so they decided they could live north of the city and commute to work, which usually consists of travelling to the airport and on to the next set location.

“It’s as though the house was built for us,” said Jacquie, adding their friends have marveled that if they were to describe their dream house, this would be it.

“It’s like living in a piece of art,” said Andrew.

The house was built by Paulette and Peter Dennis. The artists infused the house with creativity, planning out every detail and using scavenged materials to bring it to life.

Jacquie and Andrew are the third owners of Hardwood House, as it was named by the Dennises, so they had never met its builders. They were anxious to hear more about the stories of the home’s origins, which have become almost legend in the community so they invited the Dennises to come over.

Atop a very steep driveway, a visitor’s first glimpse of the house is south-facing wall of windows, slanted to catch the sun’s angle. The design allows the sun to heat the house in the winter and be shaded in the summer.

Jacquie and Andrew said when they moved to the country they were a little worried about heat, but the house is always warm. “We always say, they thought of everything,” said Jacquie.

All three floors open to the glass wall, creating a bright open space. Looking from above or below, the curved staircases and balconies create a sculptural effect.

The original windows (which have been replaced) were salvaged from old trucks, the stair treads were dug out from under manure in a barn and then cleaned in the bathtub, the exterior stone wall was made with field stone collected from an adjacent farm field, and the interior brick wall was made with bricks from the old fire hall in Barrie (the Dennis children did most of the brickwork).

Perhaps most intriguing is the gondola. The Dennises had it installed two years after moving in, as a solution to the driveway, which was unnavigable in winter. It isn’t operational right now but Jacquie and Andrew are determined to get it going.

The gondola seats two and has room for provisions.

When “Dennis Air” first opened the Dennises invited the community to take a ride and it continued to be an object of curiosity from passersby.

The house has a great feeling, which must come from the artistic energy infused into almost every feature.

“The first thing everybody says is that the energy in the space is so good,” said Rushlow.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert will be appearing at the queen’s 200th birthday party on Saturday, hosted

by Clearview Public Library and Creemore Log Cabin.

Visitors are invited to taste-test Victoria Sponge Cakes, made by Lee Anning and library staffers Michele McKenzie and Elaine Hamerton.

Victoria Sponge Cakes have only four ingredients so the taste-test will come down to technique.

As a boy, Anning had to make a Victoria Sponge Cake for Cubs, and he was taught to bake one by his grandmother. He is still using that same recipe.

McKenzie is making a 1-2-3-4 Victoria Sponge Cake that she got from a cookbook from The Great War. At the beginning of the 19th century, most toys were made out of metal,

wood, tin plate or even paper. The Victorian era was full of games for children of all ages but garden games such as croquet, tossing graces, bowl barrel hoops, and walking on stilts were favourites. Simcoe County Museum is providing the latter two for the party, and there will also be chess, checkers and the bean bag toss.

On rainy days children stayed indoors and played parlour games.

Many of these popular games, such as Charades, Blind Man’s Bluff, and Pin the Tail on the Donkey, are still played at parties today.

With games and a chance to try on the “Crown Jewels” there is lots for children to do.

Refreshments will be served, including tea and lemonade, during the event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., all at Creemore Log Cabin on Library Street.

Friday Night Lights Friday Night Lights is coming to Creemore.

Corey Finkelstein, who has organized Creemore Valley Classics car show on Mill Street for the past 11 years, decided to change things up a bit this year by hosting four Friday night shows throughout the summer.

The car shows will be more casual with owners invited to come to town for the evening and park along the street.

The idea, based on the popular Cars and Coffee events, is that the vehicle owners come to enjoy an evening in Creemore and meet with members of the collector community while providing an impromptu car show for spectators and other visitors.

Finkelstein is hoping businesses will stay open late and people from out of town will come in to shop, have dinner and stroll the street while looking at the cars.

The show is geared toward owners of vehicles from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. Finkelstein said the newer cars are growing in popularity with collectors, as the next generation of classic car enthusiasts get involved.

“We are hoping to draw a younger crowd and some different car owners,” said Finkelstein, who says he too is interested in the newer models.

The first show is on May 31 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The others are planned for July 12, August 23 and Sept. 6.

Boundless IPA offers mighty hop aroma and flavours featuring mango, tropical fruits, melon and citrus.

Though big and complex across the palette, this remarkably balanced IPA is incredibly refreshing and approachable.

A kinder, gentler IPA at 5.1% ABV. 45 IBU, it is available in 473-ml and 355-ml cans at select LCBOs, The Beer Store and at the brewery.

The hop profile: Amarillo (as a bittering and flavour hop in the kettle, adding subtle flavours of peach, melon and grapefruit).

Then there is two big charges of Mosaic and the hop X06277 for aroma in the whirlpool that give the beer notes of mango, pineapple, citrus and pine.

It is then dry hopped with a combination of all three to create this Boundless IPA.

Creemore Springs Brewery has brewed its first India Pale Ale (IPA) and it has proven to be very popular.

Brewmaster Kevin Clark said they haven’t been able to keep up with demand. Since launching in February, they have already sold more than they planned on making through all of 2019.

They are calling it a kinder, gentler IPA with all the flavour but a little lighter in alcohol content than a lot of the other IPAs that are on the market.

Whereas others are usually between 6-7 per cent, Creemore IPA has 5.1 per cent alcohol by volume making it more approachable and more appealing for the masses.

What makes the IPA special, is the hops.

In developing the IPA, Clark said it took about six months working out the

combination, settling on three varieties Amarillo, Mosaic and one so new it is still called X06277.

The result is bit of an east-meetswest in its style, said Clark. The western IPAs are known for being more piney, resiny, dark and boozy. The eastern style IPAs are light but quite hazy, he explained.

The Creemore IPA has the best of both with all the flavour in a light,

crisp brew.

When brewing beer, the hops are usually added before it is boiled.

Adding it afterward retains that hoppy aroma. Creemore adds hops before it is fired in the kettle and afterwards.

“It was really fun to develop,” said Clark. “This has been a classic lager brewery for a long time so being able to try our hand at a more avant-garde style, and make something that all the beer geeks on our team can be proud of, that was great.”

The IPA is part of the permanent Creemore Springs Brewery line-up so people can look forward to drinking it all year round, said brand manager Steph McLarty. She agrees, it’s perfect for drinking on the back deck, after a long day in the garden.

Spring is here… or is it?

by Elaine Collier We took some time off in April after a very busy ski season.

It was lovely to get away to Barbados (our first time) and have someone else do all the cooking!

Although the house is quiet until the May long weekend, we always try to do our spring cleaning, both inside and out before the late spring/summer cohort of guests start arriving.

T h e N o t t a w a s a g a Va l l e y Conservation Authority had its annual Arbour Day last weekend in Utopia, just outside of Barrie. We made sure to get there early and pick up our batches of bare root saplings to plant around the edge of our lawns and in the fields.

Our treasure trove included white pine, white cedar, nannyberry and wild sumac, 90 saplings in all. We were too late to pick up any sugar maples but there is always next year. Although we won’t necessarily be around to see them all grow to their full height and beauty, it’s a good feeling knowing that you are planting it forward!

Next on the list is creating our raised beds for both flowers and vegetables.

It’s amazing how much wood we have found on the property that will be recycled into our beds, left over bits and pieces from when the house was built. We have our seedlings planted and set out in the basement, waiting for some warmer weather. Our plans are quite ambitious but I’m remaining optimistic we will have a good crop this year. This weekend is the opening of the Creemore Farmers’ Market and I can hardly wait. It is always lots of fun to see the market start up again each spring, as well as mix and mingle with friends I haven’t seen in a while. I hope to see all of you there!

My recipe this week incorporates a little bit of spring into an oven baked dish that is delicious served for breakfast or a spring lunch – if it ever warms up around here!

I have been experimenting of late with different quiche ingredients.

Many of our B&B guests have enjoyed large family style quiches cut into portions table side as well as smaller individual tarts. This dish is a nice change for breakfast – you’ve got your eggs covered and can even throw in bacon or ham bits if you like. You can also make a great quiche with a variety of different seasonal vegetables you have on hand.

Just a quick note on the cream you can use. Depending on my mood and what’s in the fridge, I make my quiches extra rich and creamy by using 35 per cent whipping cream or I go with lighter 10 per cent cream.

I’ve even made them with whole milk but wouldn’t go any lower on the fat scale or your finished dish will be rather watery.

Asparagus Cheese Quiche 1 pie crust (your favourite home made version or store bought) 2 teaspoons melted butter 1 bunch asparagus, cleaned, trimmed and cut into 2.5 inch pieces 1 tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) 1 teaspoon butter 3 large eggs 1 cup cream 2 cups grated Swiss or white cheddar cheese 1 tablespoon all purpose flour Salt & pepper Preheat oven to 400°F. Roll out piecrust to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Brush the pie crust with melted butter and set aside.

In a medium size frying pan heat EVOO and 1 teaspoon butter to medium.

Add asparagus and sauté for about 5 minutes, tossing to coat evenly with the oil/butter mixture. The asparagus

should be bright green but not fully cooked – it will continue cooking in the oven. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and set aside. Toss shredded cheese with all purpose flour and set aside in another bowl.

In a medium mixing bowl, beat eggs and cream until well incorporated. You are now ready to assemble the quiche.

Sprinkle a very small amount of the grated cheese mixture in the bottom of the pie crust, then place the sautéed asparagus pieces decoratively on top.

Then sprinkle the rest of the cheese evenly over top. Finish off by carefully pouring the egg mixture into the pie crust. Place quiche in the oven (be careful – the contents can slosh around) for 10 minutes. Reduce oven heat to 325°F and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes until the centre is set and a knife inserted comes out clean. Remove from oven and let set for 5 minutes then serve.

Safe & Sound Bob Ransier has in his home a piece of Creemore’s history.

He has built into the wall of his living room the original safe from the Hisey Company, which had their main office at 176 Mill Street, now the location of Creemore 100 Mile Store.

When he first acquired the safe from Anne Scott, Ransier had to hire a locksmith to get it open. Ransier and Scott agreed to split whatever money was inside.

Once the locksmith drilled open the safe, it was discovered it contained 59 cents and a Columbian penny. That handful of change is still tucked away in the safe, neither of them having gone running to the bank.

Ransier said there is no manufacturer, serial number or identifying marks on the safe, but he is interested in learning more about it. He does know it once belonged to the Hiseys, who had a farm on Ten Hill and a butcher shop in town.

According to the Creemore Star, Mr. Hisey Sr. opened a butcher shop in Gowan’s Hotel (formerly the Sovereign and now Quince Bistro) in 1880. The following year he built the Creemore Meat Market.

Mr. Hisey had several sons and these young men soon became interested in the business.

They also shipped live hogs on the local railway, known as the Hog Special. Two of his sons, Sam and Jacob, grew the business under the moniker of S & J Hisey.

Before the bank opened it wasn’t uncommon for Creemore businesses to have safes and vaults because they dealt in large amounts of cash, explained Gerry Blackburn. He said the Hiseys would have paid out big money for shipments of grain as their business expanded. They built a grain elevator and ice storage house, and dealt in coal, apples and seed. All of the money flowed through the head office on Creemore.

Another brother, John Hisey, opened a brickyard, which supplied much of the bricks used to construct the main street buildings.

The Hisey safe later ended up at Alexander’s Five to $1 Store, where Seasons In Creemore is now located at 168 Mill Street.

The store was owned by Earl and Jean Blackburn, and later purchased by Ole and Jim Wines.

“There are reminders of the Hiseys around town.

The 100 Mile Store was once their head office, with a vault at the back that is now a storeroom. Two of the Hisey houses on Mill Street still stand. One is on the southwest corner of Mill Street and Johnson Avenue.

The other is one of the brick houses across the street.

One of the nicest reminders of the Hiseys is the display of peonies in the perennial border along the edge of Johnson Avenue. Jake Hisey, who is also remembered as the originator of Creemore Horticultural Society, planted them,” wrote Helen Blackburn in one of her columns about the Hiseys’ legacy.

In the Vault

Creemore has always been a bustling commercial centre. It is obvious by the number of vaults located in the village, many of which are still functional but now serve a different purpose. The vault at Creemore 100 Mile Store, once the head office of the Hisey Company, is used to display product. Chez Michel (orginally the Noisy River Telephone Company) uses its vault as a wine cellar and the vault at Victorian Values (originally the Bank of Montreal) is used to store bedding and linens.

A recent renovation at the Bank Café revealed the thickness of the vault walls at what used to be the Bank of Toronto. Needless to say, the dishwashing station there is very secure.

Saturday, May 11 provided perfect weather for a group of Green Party members and supporters who gathered at County Road 91 and Fairgrounds Road to do the annual spring road cleanup. They reported only a $1.80 in beer can/bottle returns, down from previous years, but the number of pop cans, bottles and cigarette butts was still very high.

Clearview Township (Public Works Department) is seeking two (2) energetic, self-motivated and team-oriented individuals to perform the duties and responsibilities of Heavy Equipment Operator, one in a permanent capacity and one temporary.

Key Accountabilities Reporting to the Foreman, Roads and Drainage, the Public Works (Roads) Heavy Equipment Operators are responsible for assisting with snow removal, sanding, inspecting and repairing roads infrastructure as well as clearing sidewalks and ensuring compliance with current Road Safety standards.

Skills and Experience • Minimum Grade 12 education with 2 years of demonstrated experience operating heavy equipment. Experience operating a grader is preferred • Valid DZ Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.

• In addition to operating heavy equipment, must possess ability to operate utility trucks, pumps, compressors, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, two-way radios and phone.

• Knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and safe work practices.

• Ability to understand, read and follow written and oral instructions.

• Ability to perform heavy manual labour, including bending, stooping, reaching and lifting heavy objects.

• Physical strength and ability sufficient to meet job requirements for extended periods under uncomfortable conditions in all types of weather.

• Current WHIMIS training • In case of urgent call-ins, must be able to respond to the workplace within 30 minutes.

Salary: Salary range offered for this position is $27.75 per hour plus additional shift premiums dependant upon licencing plus a highly competitive benefits package.
