Council cancels prayer

SIU investigates Avening crash

Live streaming of meetings considered by Trina Berlo Without much fuss, the Clearview Ministerial Association has been stricken from Clearview Township council’s agenda. Leading up to a review of the municipality’s Procedure Bylaw, regularly done at the start of a new council term, Mayor Doug Measures recommended the removal of time allocated for a blessing. Council meetings have traditionally been opened with a prayer but in 2015, after a Supreme Court ruling that having prayers from specific religious denominations was a violation of religious rights, it was opened up to everyone. Measures told The Echo he has received a complaint about the prayer but he would not share the details. He said he did share the concern with the rest of council and invited The Echo to file a request for information (which we are in the process of preparing). Clearview council extended the opportunity to people of all faiths, including members of the ministerial association. However, no one else has taken advantage of the opportunity and the association doesn’t always have a representative at meetings, resulting in the allocated time often going unused. The motion to remove the prayer passed 6-3 with Robert Walker, Thom Paterson and Doug McKechnie voting against. Paterson quipped, “Sometimes what is said during that time are the wisest words spoken all night.” Further review to the Procedure (See “Clearview” on page 9)

Mount Zion farmers press council for road work by Trina Berlo Curtis Royal spoke at a budget public meeting Monday, expressing disappointment that Mount Zion roads are not included in the 2019-2023 road construction schedule. “Our request has fallen on deaf ears,” he said. Royal was part of a delegation of farmers who live and work in an area called Mount Zion, out the Caroline Street West extension, southwest of Creemore. They had gone before Clearview council in the spring to ask

for improvements to the area roads, Concession 5 South Nottawasaga, the 3-4 Sideroad and the Nottawasaga/ Mulmur Townline. He said they asked for a response from the municipality, and have heard nothing. “The Mount Zion farming community is possibly one of the highest in agricultural economic activity in the township,” said Royal. “Our truck traffic, unlike many of the other gravel township roads, is 365 days a year. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a collision that happened in Avening back in November. On Nov. 25, at about 6 p.m., there was a collision between a police cruiser and a civilian vehicle at Airport Road (County Road 42) and the 3/4 Sideroad Nottawasaga. SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said all three occupants from the civilian vehicle, as well as the police officer, were transported to hospital for treatment. The 75-year-old driver of the vehicle sustained serious injury. Four investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case. At the time of the collision, The Echo was unable to get any information or comment from emergency responders and there were no mentions on social media by police or the fire department, which is highly unusual.

Clearview hockey holds naming contest The newly formed Clearview Minor Hockey is holding a contest for players, to choose the team’s new name and logo. On Jan. 30, members of hockey associations in Creemore and Stayner voted to amalgamate into one league. The winning name must include Clearview and cannot include any of the existing monikers, such as the Valley Hawks or Cyclones. The amalgamation committee will select the top three and then members will vote in March to choose the winner. The prize is free registration for the 2019-2020 season and their own jersey with the new name and logo. Although the contest is geared to members, anyone can enter. Send submissions to clearviewminorhockey19@gmail. com by Feb. 28.
