Volunteers with Senior Wish Association’s first Clearview Christmas program gathered at First Baptist Church in Stayner on Dec. 15 to pack presents for socially isolated seniors in the community. Through the generosity of thoughtful and caring individuals and businesses, all 74 seniors identified in Clearview will receive personalized gifts to open Christmas morning. From the numerous donations, an additional 51 bags were filled and will be distributed locally and in surrounding communities. School children from a number of local schools made Christmas cards to be included with the gifts.

Tom and Cathy Cook, and Debbie Steward from Salvation Army Hope Acres in Glencairn stopped by to collect the many donations of toys that came in during The Creemore Echo’s toy drive. All the food was delivered to the Clearview Stayner Food Bank. We also received an impressive amount of cash and gift cards for both organizations.

Everyone is welcome at the Creemore Community Christmas Dinner.

Held at the Creemore Legion on Christmas Day, volunteers serve up a traditional festive dinner, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Coordinators ask that people register before Dec. 23 to reserve a place. A few seats are held for last minute guests.

Volunteers are happy to deliver a hot meal to anyone in the Creemore/ Avening area who may be shut-in due to illness, disability or any other situation and will also be available to assist those in need of transportation to and from the Legion hall.

A donation of a non-perishable food item for the food bank is appreciated and a pay-what-you-can donation is also accepted to help cover the costs of the meal. The venue is donated by the Legion, but much of the food is contributed community members.

Clearview deputy mayor elected Simcoe's deputy warden On Dec. 11 County Council elected George Cornell, Mayor of the Township of Tiny, to serve as Simcoe County Warden for 2019 and 2020.

“I am honoured to be elected as Simcoe County warden for the next two years and I look forward to working on behalf of council and county staff to advance our services, programs and regional leadership,” said Cornell. “We’re a growing county with tremendous opportunities to advance our economy, grow tourism, strengthen our regional infrastructure and improve the health and well-being of our residents. I thank my colleagues for demonstrating their confidence in my leadership and I look forward to serving the residents of Simcoe County.”

As a civil engineer, Cornell spent his career working in the oil and gas sector. He joined municipal politics as

Cornell and his wife Sandy have two children and two grandchildren.

County council also elected Barry Burton, Deputy Mayor of the Township of Clearview, as the Simcoe County Deputy Warden for 2019 and 2020.

Burton is an independent business owner who was first elected deputy mayor of Clearview in 2014 and was acclaimed to the position in October.

As a deputy mayor, Burton served as a member of county council, sitting as a member of the county’s Museum Advisory Sub-Committee. Burton also represents Simcoe County on the Niagara Escarpment Commission.

Burton and his wife Lorraine have four adult children and six grandchildren.

New council sworn in at Dufferin County inaugural On Dec. 13, 14 council members were sworn in as members of the council for the County of Dufferin.

County council is comprised of the mayors and, in most cases, the deputy mayors of each of Dufferin’s municipalities. Municipalities with 2,500 or more electors have two representatives on council.

After the swearing in ceremony, Melancthon Mayor Darren White was acclaimed as the 2018/2019 warden, head of council. This is White’s second term as county warden having previously held the position in 2017.

County council meetings are open to the public and held monthly on the second Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. at 51 Zina Street, Orangeville.

The Way We Were

Santa’s Secret

by Ed Wildman “Why should I tell you?” Santa Claus demanded.

“Why not?” asked Ed, the old curmudgeon, who lived in the Honeywood Schoolhouse.

“Because,” Santa said. “You haven’t got a Christmas tree up. I never share secrets with people without Christmas spirit.”

“Hey, Santa. I’ve got lots of Christmas spirits. What kind would you like?”

Santa considered that for a moment. “Ho. Ho. Ho,” he said. “Just a touch of orange brandy might give me a glow.”

Ed poured two brandies and handed Santa one.

“Actually,” he said, “you don’t have to tell me your secret. I know your secret. Your initials are S.C.” Santa took a strong nip of brandy and started to laugh. “Of course, my initials are S.C.,” he said. “S.C. for Santa Claus.”

“No,” Ed said, “not S.C. for Santa Claus, S.C. for Stan Cowling.”

Santa finished his brandy and Ed poured him a second. There was a long silence. “How did you figure it out?” Santa demanded.

“Well,” Ed said. “I saw you ploughing out the schoolhouse driveway the other day. I knew it was you even though it looked like Stan Cowling.”

“You,” Santa said, “are the first person to ever figure it out. Other people think that Stan Cowling puts on a Santa suit and pretends to be me but the truth is... you’re right, Ed. Stan Cowling is such a great guy I get dressed up like Stan Cowling and pretend to be him. But how did you figure it out?”

“It was easy,” Ed said. “Nobody but Santa Claus would do as many nice things for other people as that Stan Cowling does. It had to be you!”

“Promise not to tell anyone, Ed,” Santa said.

“Your secret is safe with me, Santa.”

“Good” Santa said, “and your secret is safe with me.”

“My secret?” Ed asked. “What secret?”

“I know who you really are,” Santa said.

Ed laughed. “Well, you better tell me, Santa, because I’ve been trying to figure that out all my life.”

Santa Claus laughed too. He looked around carefully to make sure no one could hear him.

“Sing Blue Christmas for me, Elvis,” Santa said.

“But Santa, I’m not Elvis.”

“Hey Ed, you can’t fool me. You’re Elvis Presley or I’m not Santa Claus.”

“Maybe, Ed said, “you really are Stan Cowling.”

But when eight tiny reindeer landed on the schoolhouse roof and Santa took off in his sleigh Ed began to feel his hips begin to gyrate and the words of Blue Christmas began to issue from his mouth and Santa waved goodbye, saying “See Elvis, there is really a Santa Claus.”

Station parking lot could be green space Editor: I am as yet not a resident of Creemore but soon hope to be and am therefore sorry to have been unable to attend the recent meeting concerning the fate of the TD bank. Being of European descent I realize the importance to a village of a central square, plaza, platz, or piazza to the cultural events and festivities of village life, not to mention a location for villagers to pass a warm summer’s night in the company of their neighbours.

I have always felt the Station on the Green was a mistake. While I realize the train was an important lifeline to the world for rural villages, anyone growing up in a small town will remember that, except for the few moments surrounding train time the local station was a lonely and deserted place. Since the war memorial is flanked by two roads leading to Library Street it should have been possible to incorporate the northern one into a large inviting community square.

Instead those in charge chose to build a “faux” railway station and a large parking lot both of which are deserted most of the time.

The TD property offers a relatively small amount of additional space for its potential cost. Perhaps the village would be better served to turn the old bank

How many real options for TD land?

Editor: 150 people and 150 ideas as to what should be done, as you now realize, democracy and consensus can be the bedfellows of chaos. My only question is when the TD, as a generous community gesture gave the property to Creemore to be used as parkland, I sure they never envisioned the community keeping the building and operating it as a commercial entity, or selling it for cash, have you considered what TD’s reaction might be?

Christmas survival guide for families

by Liz van Ryn Family-oriented holidays usually stir up a range of feelings about spending time with people we love, and not all of those feelings are good.

For most families there are huge expectations that Christmas will be a time when everyone is happy and everything is perfect, and because the bar gets set so high, we are often disappointed. It is a set-up for disaster, so we all develop ways of dealing with this.

The foolish among us hold onto childlike memories of the magic and wonder that Christmas once was, and exhaust ourselves in order to re-create it again, year after year. The cynical among us, with no magical Christmas illusions, know that we need to brace ourselves, spend a wad of cash, and get through it all with a stiff glass of eggnog. And then there is that special breed of human being – the avoiders – who can stay in Christmas denial right until Dec. 24 when they engage in a flurry of guilt-driven, last minute spending that makes for great gifts, and large credit card balances. And when the dishes are piled up at the end

of the day, we all ask ourselves, was it worth it, was it meaningful, did we really connect with the ones we love, or did we just survive Christmas?

How do we avoid the disappointment, the drama, and the exhaustion, and truly enjoy our families on what should be a spiritual and meaningful holiday? Could we, would we, should we, dare to change our expectations? We humans have a short memory for pain, so we tend to mindlessly repeat traditions without thinking though the implications. If we don’t want “year after year” to be “tear after tear” we have to re-arrange our expectations and plan something different.

It’s (theoretically) simple! First, take an inventory of you and your family members’ various needs. Then, accept the reality that you are not going to be able to meet all of those needs. And finally, prioritize. Is it more important for you to sleep in your own bed on Christmas Eve, or make your mom and dad happy by waking up at their house on Christmas morning?

the schools but we decided to hold ours in the hall. It was equipped with a stage and plenty of room for an audience.

The downstairs part of the hall was a shed for horses, buggies and sleighs and upstairs was the hall where many memorable strawberry suppers and concerts had been held.

The pupils and I held a work party to ready the hall. This involved putting on a fire in the old stove, sweeping and preparing the stage. I remember trying to clean the fly specked windows but having the water turn to ice as soon as it touched the glass.

The older pupils went out and found a Christmas tree. They assured me they knew of a perfect one and sure enough they did. We had to get it up then and decorate it with ornaments found in a box in the school and also with crafts made by the children. As well we had to find bed sheets for stage curtains, put them up on wires and prepare the backdrop scenery on large sheets of paper.

My jobs, among others, were to get ads in The Creemore Star and to bring props for the plays. The first was easy, the second quite difficult. I enlisted my father to drive me to the school with a load of props. We couldn’t

get up the hill at Dunedin so I talked him into driving to Maple Valley and coming down Madills Sideroad from Highway 124. My theory was that it would be downhill and easier. Well, we almost got stuck on that road and were lucky to get back to the highway.

I have forgotten how I eventually got the things to the hall. I just remember they were there.

Another job was tracking down a Santa Claus and a suit for him. I went on many wild goose chases but finally Lloyd Fachnie agreed to act and I am grateful to this very day for his generosity. He also volunteered to play his violin between acts.

The wonderful evening finally arrived. We had a huge crowd, and as the evening went on, our jitters disappeared and our feelings turned to jubilation as everyone performed beautifully. My friend, Catherine McArthur, who was teaching near Nottawa came to help me and we were so happy at one point that we grabbed each other and danced a two-step around the stage while Lloyd played a lively tune in front of the curtain.

The day following the concert it was impossible to drive to the school and I ended up trudging through a foot of new snow straight uphill from Dunedin and pulling a toboggan to carry things home for the vacation. Public Members Accessibility Advisory Committee The County of Dufferin is currently looking for Public Members to serve on the Accessibility Advisory Committee for the 2018 to 2022 Term of Council.

The Accessibility Advisory Committee fulfills the duties of a Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee as outlined in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. The Committee advises County Council on the programs, policies and services provided to persons with disabilities and provides direction regarding the identification and prevention of barriers for persons with disabilities.

Friends of the the East Nottawasaga Cemetery on Fairgrounds Road have begun fundraising for a restoration and improvement project next summer 2019, which will include straightening and cleaning monuments, tree planting, grounds improvement etc. As one of the oldest cemeteries in Simcoe County, many of the pioneers that settled in the area in the mid 1800s are resting here.
