by Trina Berlo It’s that time again when booklovers make room on their shelves for the great finds they pick up at the Big Book Bash at Station on the Green.

Those looking to offload some books can donate to the cause. Volunteers are now accepting donations of good quality books for the Sept. 15 sale.

All proceeds from the biennial sale go

to ongoing maintenance and upkeep of Station on the Green, Creemore’s community centre, and help keep rental costs low.

About 20 volunteers are working daily to clean, sort, and alphabetize the books that are to be meticulously laid out on long tables on the day of the sale. The event is one that people look forward to, and judging by some of the piles, use to stock up on reading material for the full two years.

Organizers are looking for good quality reading material, saying fiction sells best, including romance, literature, children’s books and young adult. They also accept cookbooks but they are not

accepting encyclopedias, textbooks, bibles, business books, magazines and anything that is out-of-date. The reason is that volunteers have to dispose of anything that doesn’t sell and the associated costs cut into the proceeds.

Clean, gently-read books are being accepted until Sept. 13 at the Creemore Curling Club from 10 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday and at The Creemore Echo office during regular business hours.

On the day of the sale, doors open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 2 p.m.

The curling club is located at 218 Collingwood St. The Creemore Echo office is located at 3 Caroline St. W.

C l e a r v i e w To w n s h i p M a y o r Christopher Vanderkruys announced at the August 13 council meeting that the municipality’s $3.5 million bid to purchase the Collingwood Regional Airport was rejected by the Town of Collingwood.

According to a township news release, Vanderkruys said that Clearview Township has concerns related to the evaluation process and scoring of the submitted bids.

The Township’s understanding was that keeping the facility in public ownership would have resulted in favourable scoring. At this point, no clarification or communication of any manner related to the sale of the regional airport has been provided by the Town of Collingwood.

After it was announced that Winterland Developments Ltd was the successful bidder, Vanderkruys said officials have been in touch “with the purpose of starting informal discussions related to the successful and continued operation of the Regional Airport located within Clearview Township.”

“It has been encouraging to see the excitement and professionalism of Winterland Developments Ltd around the future operations of the regional airport. I have shared my views around the importance of the airport for both Clearview Township and for the County of Simcoe as a whole. In my opinion, Winterland Developments Ltd understands the importance of the regional airport as a key economic driver for our region,” said Vanderkruys.

Passion, guidance yields dairy championship title

by Cat Flack I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with a fine young man by the name of Ryan Lewis, a 22-year-old dairyman.

He has the distinct honour of winning the EastGen Challenge for 2018, becoming the Grand Champion Showman.

You might ask what this challenge is all about, well I will tell you.

The challenge has to do with cattle, dairy cattle in particular.

Ryan has put a lot of work into producing and training a winning beast. He has been into showing dairy cattle since he was a boy of just 12 years old.

He has been guided by not only his love of dairy cattle but by the expertise given by his Uncle Colin Walker and Auntie Tanya Walker.

He has spent many hours on their dairy farm helping with the daily care and milking duties.

Colin and Tanya have run the 4-H section of dairy cattle during the summer months to a legion of kids wanting to be involved with the farming experience, even if they don’t live on a farm themselves.

Ryan got involved with 4-H and even won Top Senior Showman at the Collingwood fair and got quite far at the Royal Winter Fair.

The training of a show calf starts when the calf is only three months of age. By the time the animal has reached 16 months, it has much experience in the show ring.

It isn’t just the animal that is on the testing grounds though. The exhibitor has to be in top show form as well.

There is a required uniform, usually a white shirt, white cap and black pants with safety footwear (it hurts if you get stepped on by a few hundred pounds of cattle beast).

Things that the judges look for are: confirmation (how the animal is standing, and yes there is a stance that is required for show), nice straight back (no sway backs), a long neck (all the better for the stance), nice straight legs, and big expanding ribs.

As the dairy animal gets older and is female, the udder and milk vein play an important part in the judging process.

When Ryan is showing, his day usually begins around 3 a.m., a good bath for the show animal, touch up clipping and blow drying. Tails are

Show animals are fed a wholesome diet to keep them healthy. Signs that an illness might be brewing are coughs, cold ears, snotty noses and trouble walking. If an animal shows up with any of these symptoms, generally checked over by the resident veterinarian, they are not allowed anywhere near the show grounds.

It is a very serious and competitive business.

Market value for these dairy cows can be anywhere from $1,500 (very young calf who shows promise for a great milking career) up to $1.3

million. Animals that are in that price range will be bred and the DNA cultivated to pass on to other high-end cows.

So what is next for Ryan? Well, he now has a herd of 11, some are milkers and some are just calves. His winning heifer, Zadie, is going to be a mother in March, so much excitement in what kind of off spring she will produce.

Ryan exhibits in at least six fairs and shows in the show season, the furthest away being in Ancaster.

Not only is Ryan busy with his herd of cattle and helping his Auntie and Uncle on the farm, he also attends business school and works part-time at Hanna Ford in Stayner, a busy young man to say the least.

When I asked Ryan what he thought 4-H did for him, he replied, “A sense of what hard work means and that you have a responsibility to the animals that are in your care.”

As with any competition, whether it be for sports or animal exhibitions, there is a huge commitment involved not only from the competitor but also from the people who help train and guide the participant through all the dealings of competing.

Some of the biggest challenges are the costs involved in getting to the shows and accommodations.

The Way We Were

The real must-haves for back-to-school

by Liz van Ryn Some parents are running around in circles this week trying to get organized for sending the kids back to school. It is a lot of work to set up after-school care, plan lunches that kids will actually eat, and hunt out deals on new backpacks and clothing. And some kids have a pretty long list of things they think they need, as well as a whining, pleading, desperate tone to their voice when they are talking about it. This is the time of year when you wonder if you have raised a spoiled, entitled, little brat. And the answer is probably not – you just have a very anxious kid on your hands.

Imagine if we all had two months off (oh yes!) and then suddenly got thrust back into a crowded, high pressure working environment with a new team, a new boss, maybe even a new workplace. For most of us this would be terrifying. And we would sure hope that our organization’s leadership team had come up with some change management strategies to prepare us for the transition.

Often the way we “prepare” our kids for the change of going back to school is to buy them things. And we are inadvertently teaching them that buying things will alleviate anxiety. If your child is being “a brat” about needing the latest and most expensive pair of running shoes you can likely guess that his or her fears and worries are pretty high, in fact, the more whining, the higher the anxiety. Will I look right?

Will I fit in? Am I cool enough? Am I good enough?

Recognizing this is the first step to a cheap solution, because the good news is that we don’t have to spend more money to deal with this. In fact, spending more money will be counter-productive because every kid knows deep inside that if they do not have their own self-confidence, everyone will see through the Air Jordans.

We can help our kids prepare for school by building self-confidence in their own ability to handle that change. If you engage in a quick internet search of how to help people manage the change process, buying them shoes is not on the list! Taking time to listen, demonstrating your concern, fixing what you can, helping them have a sense of control, etc. are the strategies that are suggested. The real “must-haves” for going back to school are your time and attention as a parent. So when you are out at the mall this weekend, know that the time you spend having a bite to eat in the food court talking about their worries and fears, and helping them develop solutions to their social anxieties is worth more than any pair of shoes that money can buy. Your child’s self-confidence will grow if you take the time to listen because it lets them know they are important. Their sense of competence and control will increase when you help them develop ideas for how to get involved in school. And the whining will decrease. Eventually!

Consider regional government Editor: We know from the last two editions of The Echo and the appearance of early campaign signs and councillor mailings that we must soon endure yet another municipal election.

We already have access through the township website and The Echo to lots of information on all those intending to seek election and compete for one of the nine council positions.

No doubt the volume of mail inserts from these enthusiastic citizens will increase dramatically as we get closer to the October election date.

As I contemplate this process, repeated with regularity every four years, I cannot help but wonder what motivates someone to run for a municipal council seat, what they hope to accomplish and what each candidate intends to present as reasons why they should get our votes. Here it should be noted that voter turnout was about 42 per cent last time around (down from the prior election) and it will not be a surprise if the turnout is even lower in October.

that we will hear some serious debate on how our elected council will make a difference to the lives of our residents, other than oversight of a continued increase in our taxes. There have to be good reasons to vote for a candidate and they cannot be just that they are all nice people with an interest in the community.

Perhaps it is also a time to talk about how the costs of so many layers of government could be reduced and the ever-growing burden of regulation on just about every aspect of our lives could be eased.

Perhaps also there should be serious dialogue on the amalgamation of smaller municipalities and broader County administration of the various services we need in our communities.

For me at least, the coming election raises the question as to the relevance and effectiveness of the council continuing to act on our behalf with less than a majority of the community giving their support.

These are difficult questions but ones that warrant a serious discussion.

Back-to-school: Helping kids get a healthy start

by Bronwyn Hill It’s the end of August, and with that, the start of a new school year is on the doorstep. There’s always lots for children to anticipate with the start of school; whether it be a new teacher, a new class/classmates, or a new school.

Excitement and anxiety can go hand-inhand for many kids, and their parents as well.

To get the school year off to a healthy and happy start, here are some tips and considerations for the whole family during this time of transition.

Getting into a regular sleep routine once school starts can be difficult because of less restriction on sleep times in the summer, that later setting sun, and vacations that throw a sleep schedule out the window.

Getting a good night’s sleep is important for a number of reasons including maintaining good energy throughout the school day, supporting concentration and focus in class.

Both sleep quality and quantity are important, because this is the primary time when the body rests and restores.

On average, preschoolers need 10-13 hours, school-aged children need 9-11 hours, and teenagers should be sleeping at least 8-10 hours every night.

The timing of when kids fall asleep can make a big difference in sleep quality. Children from infancy to school-age seem to sleep better when they fall asleep between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. On the other hand, children who go to bed after 9 p.m. often take longer to fall asleep, wake more frequently during the night, and end up sleeping less overall.

To support kids getting the shut-eye they need, start establishing an earlier bedtime gradually over the next few weeks. Work towards the ideal time by working back in 15-20 minute increments every day or two. These gradual but consistent shifts can help make the bedtime change easier for children and parents.

It’s also worthwhile to re-establish a consistent evening routine, that includes a regular bedtime. Powering down the screens and electronics at least an hour before bed is a good idea, as the blue-light emitted is a known disruptor of melatonin secretion.

Suppression of melatonin makes it difficult for children and adults to get to sleep and stay asleep.

Healthy, real food builds healthy bodies and brains. You literally are what you eat, so think about how you can prioritize nutritional building blocks like healthy fats, protein, whole grains and colorful veg and fruit. The ideal lunch includes veggies (1-2 different colours), a serving or two of fruit, a protein (lean meat, fish, eggs, beans/bean dip, nuts/seeds and their butters) and a carbohydrate (whole grain bread, crackers, tortilla, whole grain pasta or rice, oats, quinoa).

I know you have heard it before but avoid added/refined sugars as much as possible to help keep everyone’s nervous system healthy.

Sugar consumption has been linked to poor memory, and attention span in the classroom – not to mention it just tends to make kids more anxious and irritable.

Make time to connect and listen to

your kids. As tough as it might be with busy schedules, having some time to give your kids space to talk and just be connected with their parents is especially important with the back-toschool transition. Maybe you prioritize having dinner together at the table regularly to facilitate this, maybe you use the bedtime routine as a time for sharing, stories, cuddles and love. Try to make this time a consistent part of the daily routine to support the whole family.

Creemore rallies, narrowly missing provincials

by Marc Dupuis Ivy was the team to beat, but Creemore was the team to watch.

It was an electric atmosphere at Gowan Park this past weekend as 12 teams made the trip to battle for the chance to earn a spot in the provincial baseball championships for Peewee.

Creemore came in as the number 4 seed and squared off with the Newmarket Hawks on Friday night.

Cal Stinson (6-0) continued his dominant season throwing a complete game no-hitter, striking out 4. The bats came to life after a half hour lightening delay, finishing off a 10-0 win. Paired against Aurora (12-3-1) Saturday morning, Creemore looked sleepy and played sloppy, the team battled back ultimately falling 8-7. The Braves with their backs against the wall next faced Markham (12-4). The sloppy play continued for much of the Markham game, Creemore found themselves losing 8-3, down to their last three outs. A Markham Coach was ejected for arguing a close play at first base, Creemore followed with a double, a bunt single, a walk and another single.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Cameron Pratt crushed a fastball over the fence in right center field for a 9-8 Braves walk off win. Creemore matched up against Aurora once again, the Braves full time catcher Tyler Higginson got the start and pitched a complete game

A dozen peewee baseball teams played for a spot at the provincial championships at Gowan Park in Creemore this past weekend. shutout giving up only one hit in a 10-0 win. The offence carried over from the Markham game with Anson Dupuis and Stinson hitting back-to-back home runs in the first inning, putting the Braves into the semifinals.

Creemore came out slowly again Sunday morning against the Barrie Baycats (12-4-2) falling behind 8-3. Landon Grant came in to hold the Barrie offense down as Creemore come back to make it 8-6. With two outs in the 7th inning Seth Shakell fell behind 0-2 with the bases loaded.

scooped a handful of dirt and put it in his back pocket, magic struck again.

Shakell lined the next pitch into center field scoring two runs to tie the game, then Rowan Lester followed by flaring a ball into left to score two more runs, Braves win 10-8. The title game was set, Creemore versus Ivy (16-0-2).

The Braves bats came out scorching, scoring three runs in the first inning in a hurry, but Ivy answered with five runs of their own. Both teams battled back and forth in the way a championship game should be played.

with a runner on, the magic fell short and Ivy came away with the win. It was an outstanding weekend that saw the heart of the Creemore order Dresdon Dupuis, Anson Dupuis, Stinson, Higginson and Hunter Strong put up crazy numbers.

The magical moments however came from the role players who when given the opportunity, shined on the big stage. It was a great weekend and an outstanding year. Many thanks to my lovely wife Sabrina who was the main tournament organizer, Tom Gateman, Donna Harper, Dan Gowan, Robb and Paula Stinson, Sue and Ed Strong, Rob Perkins, Julie Waltho and Robert Kinghan. Without their huge contributions the weekend would not of been able to happen, I’d also like to thank our teams sponsor Tarpin Lumber.

by Lydia Sobschak Folk groups from Europe and North America will be teaching workshops and performing at the Big Branch Festival in Honeywood from September 7-9.

"I think especially today, as everything gets so digital, it's nice to have these kind of events that are really down to earth and really about connecting with the people around you," said Emilyn Stam, the event coordinator.

Stam, 29, is from the Ottawa Valley, and has strong ties to the folk community in Toronto.

"It's kind of the heart of my whole existence," said Stam, who is also a performer at the event.

Hosted by Balfolk Toronto, this is the festival's first year running.

Stam herself was one of the people who had the idea to start this festival.

Being part of the folk community in Toronto, she was looking to plan a big folk event that could take place in a setting in the country rather than the city, as folk music is not typically urban.

Programs will begin around 5 p.m. on the Friday and will end around 3 p.m. on the Sunday.

Workshops will include dance, music, and singing. The dancing will include both solo and partner styles, and will cover topics such as interaction and improvisation. Stam said people should still join, even if they have never danced before, as beginner workshops will be run on the Friday and Saturday.

Stam is encouraging people to bring their own instruments if they wish, as there will be music workshops that include instruments such as the fiddle, accordion, mandolin, flute, and guitar.

Singing workshops will teach songs for dancing, and people will get the opportunity to both sing and dance.

"The singing can help you dance because you're more focused on

the singing and then the steps just kind of come because they fit nicely with it," said Stam. "One thing that's really appealing about this kind of event is that there's not a big divide between the performer and the listener. Everyone participates. It feels like a conversation."

Aside from the workshops and performances, people will also have the opportunity to jam with each other, walk in the forests, and swim in the pond.

Attending the festival will be five groups which include the following: Lausa, musicians from Gascogne, France; Duo Rivaud-Lacouchie, musicians from Limousin, France; Duo Le Bour-Bodros, musicians from Bretagne, France; Filippo Gambetta and Stam, musicians from Italy and Canada; and Louise Marius, a dance instructor from the Netherlands.

Lausa and Duo Rivaud-Lacouchie have come to North America just for this festival.

Full weekend passes are available to all, but there is a special deal for local people for just the evenings. It will cost people from Creemore and area $40 to attend for an evening, and $50 for an evening plus dinner.

Stam said people should bring a tent if they wish, or else shared cabins will be available. Everyone should also bring bedding, warm clothes for the evenings, an instrument if they have one, and their dancing shoes.

Meals are included in the weekend pass, and all meals there will be vegetarian. The campsite is also a nut-free facility.

Knox Presbyterian overflowed at 1911 opening 2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the construction of the first church building for the congregation of Knox Presbyterian, an integral part of the community of Dunedin. Following is second of a short series of portraitures describing our collective community history, in particular this congregation’s journey. This article begins with the inauguration of the first church.

by Marc Royal In the summer of 1868 amidst a torrential downpour the, new 28’ by 40’ Greek revival style Presbyterian Church at Dunedin was filled beyond capacity for the inaugural service of ordination.

Many community homes were taxed for the night’s accommodation.

The Reverend James Greenfield, who had served diligently for six years as circuit minister, was delayed having turned back for his pulpit bible. The impatient Celtic styled congregation asked guest speaker Rev. Taylor of the neighbouring Glen Huron Methodist denomination, to now open service with the singing of the Psalms, a practice unfamiliar to him. In reciprocation Rev. Greenfield had been previously invited to dedicate the new Methodist church, both denominations being supportive of each other. Record of the order of service uniquely depicted the Presbyterian theology of the period.

On the departure of Rev. Greenfield to Scotland in 1871, the congregation struggled between alignment with

“free” (evangelical, 1830s “disruption” supportive of elected clergy but opposed to instrumental music) vs “Auld Kirk” (origins, the 6th century Celtic church of St. Columba).

An uneasy association began with the Free Presbyterians with the election of much needed elders under Rev. Rogers of Collingwood. Following lengthy discussion and a heated telegraph with the Presbytery of Simcoe, Dunedin transitioned to Auld Kirk within the Presbytery of Toronto on Jan. 5, 1872, intended to share charge with Purple Hill (a predecessor of today’s St. Andrew’s Maple Cross, Creemore) but rather, on May 15, Rev. Ferguson was inducted under the newly formed charge of Singhampton, Dunedin and Osprey.

By 1875 both factions reunited in Canada under the Union of Presbyterianism, bringing another charge and a succession of ministers, now within the Presbytery of Barrie in what would become the largest church denomination in Canada. The communion roll increased greatly, a Sabbath school, a “Singing” school, a choir and a Young Peoples Guild thrived. The first bellow organ was

“admitted as an aid to the service” in March 1891. By 1900 the congregation was too large for the modest sanctuary and under the leadership of an active Session including Rev. Dr. Craw it was decided to build a new larger church.

A three-quarter-acre allotment was donated by neighbouring saw mill owner J. C. Jackson. On June 14, 1910 the corner stone of the new church was laid with a silver trowel by Colonel John A. Currie MP for North Simcoe.

Entombed within, a church history, an issue of The Creemore Star and a one dollar bill. Local builder Mr. Alma Scarrow, masons and carpenters utilized hewn lumber, trim, hardwood flooring, window and door sashes, lime plaster, even the sand used to mix the concrete from the resources of the Noisy River valley. Brick and concrete originated within 15 miles. Purchased were stained glass, six hanging spring loaded oil lamp fixtures and custom shaped oak pews. Funds raised from the ladies quilt auction purchased the original green carpeting installed by the same hands along the oak floored isles.

Pulpit chairs, choir chairs, podium pulpit, offering plates, hymn board, linens, wall frescos incorporating the image of the burning bush, all donated, most were lovingly hand crafted by members. From the original church came the communion table, the silver common communion service jointly used by the congregations of East Nottawasaga, West Nottawasaga Purple

Hill and Dunedin, the re-fitted gallery pews, the organ and the wood fired cast iron box stove in the church hall originally donated by Rev. Greenfield, rumored to have once belonged to Elizabeth Posthuma Gwillim Simcoe.

The new church also included a bell tower, installing the community bell, previously stationed at the north end of the village some 75 years prior and regularly rung to mark the time of day.

The completed Knox Presbyterian Church and shed buildings officially opened on Jan. 22, 1911 to over-capacity crowds. So great was attendance to the event that two sets of double services were held in the sanctuary and hall, then repeated that same evening.

Following the final service, the new church overflowed once again for a fowl supper executed in shifts, serving more than 600 guests.

These were heady days in small farm communities like Dunedin. By 1900, the 100-acre farm had prospered with substantial second-generation houses and barns, for family often greater than eight in number. More than 80 per cent of the population of Canada was rural and economically strong. Trains provided transit and commercial opportunities stoking the economic engine that was rural Ontario. The church was the faith, cultural centre, collective pride and joy of the community. There seemed no end to prosperity. This would all change with the onset of war.

Sunday, Christine December 23, 1990 – June 30, 2018 On the morning of Saturday, June 30, 2018, my beloved baby girl died.

Born December 23, 1990 in Barrie, Ontario. Christine was expected in the first week of January 1991 but even as her life began, she wanted to be there for the Christmas and New Year’s festivities and she was! Leaving behind her mother, Catherine Lynn Sunday (nee Wheeler). Predeceased by her father, John (deceased September 1992). Forever held in the loving arms of grandparents Don and Jean Wheeler.

Grieving the loss of her only sibling is Christine’s sister, Megan Sunday (and Brad). Also remembered by Christine’s aunts, Lorraine (and Emel) Erkan and Kimberly (and Dan) Berek and Uncle Don Wheeler & Uncle Brian Wheeler.

And remembered & missed by nieces and nephews: Daniel, Luke and Zach, Mathew and Christen, Ziya and Ezel.

Services were held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Creemore, on Friday, July 6, 2018. Thank you to Rev. Lorna May and the church ladies for a lovely lunch. Thank you to the community for the cards and the loving support.
