Creemore BIA president Jackie Durnford, of Creemore 100 Mile Store, is organizing a bunch of manly activities and entertainment for Fatherʼs Day this Sunday, under the moniker of Fire, Beards and Axes.

Log Cabin home to Founding Fathers by Trina Berlo As part of Father’s Day events, there will be a display of the big daddies of Creemore at the log cabin. Historian Helen Blackburn has dipped into her collection of more than 1,000 local historical photos and has chosen 22 of the village’s most influential men for the Founding Fathers show this weekend. They include prominent business owners, medical professionals, the owners of the newspaper and a few of her relatives. Her great-great uncle Edward Webster is the founder of Creemore. He had a 225-acre property surveyed into more than 460 lots to form the village (See “Historian” on page 3)

Fire, Beards and Axes, fun for dads Lumberjacks, fire and flying axes will be in abundance in Creemore on Father’s Day for Fire, Beard and Axes. “I took on this role in response to the #metoo movement on social media,” said BIA president Jackie Durnford. “I couldn’t believe how many people I knew had posted this hashtag and it started to feel like there were not any nice men out there. For me, it was a wait a minute and step back moment. I had to consciously remember that there are a lot of great guys out there. The Father’s Day Festival is my way of paying tribute, creating positive reinforcement role models and bringing conscious awareness to the fact that there are a lot of good guys out there.” There will be a combo of free and ticketed activities, such as cooking with fire and beer tasting, as well as some fun competition to be found, such as diaper changing, hair braiding and a beard contest. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 17. A free lumberjack show is at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. To sign up for free activities, or buy passes to select events visit www. experiencecreemore.com/fba.
