Mulmur fishing hole gets some TLC
Treat Dad to Fire, Beards and Axes
by Trina Berlo The revitalization of the Pine River Provincial Fishing Area in Mulmur is the result of a collaborative effort to clean-up the park and restock the river. Mayor Paul Mills said the Friends of the Pine River, which formed in December, convinced the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) to restock the river and on May 30, 10,000 Speckled (Brook) Trout were released into The Pine. The river was last stocked 26 years ago. Leading up to the release, volunteers did a big clean-up of the area, which has been abused by people who dump garbage and party in the remote location. Mills said the area does attract hooligans and the clean-up effort was not without its setbacks. A new fish cleaning station built by Matt Boso was destroyed and burned. Mills said it is a real shame because Boso, a volunteer firefighter, but a lot of time and energy, and his own money, into building the station and everyone was really pleased with it. The effort to reclaim the fishing area and make it a family friendly place is a collaborative effort, said Mills. Mulmur
On Father’s Day, Creemore will celebrate the good guys with Fire, Beards and Axes. “Men are taking a real bashing lately. Some of them deserve it but we need to celebrate good men and good fathers,” said organizer and BIA president Jackie Durnford. Lumberjacks, beards, beer, cooking with fire, axe throwing, diaper changing – it’s all part of the fun. The BIA event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dads, and their loved ones, are invited to come out and enjoy a free lumberjack show on Mill Street on Sunday, June 17 at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Other activities include a dad triathlon, beard and braiding seminars and competitions, plus beer and bucks (the financial kind) workshops. Chefs and circus lumberjacks will be on site to show their chops. Dad can even try axe-throwing or enjoy a gourmet woodfired picnic lunch with the whole family. To sign up for free activities, or buy passes to select events visit www. experiencecreemore.com/fba. In the morning the Legion is hosting a Father’s Day breakfast (see calendar on page 2 for details).

NCPS gets gold healthy school certification by Trina Berlo Nottawasaga and Creemore Public School is counted among 15 Simcoe County District School Board schools to receive Healthy Schools certifications from Ophea. NCPS achieved a gold level certification for its focus on mental health, by creating classroom calming corners, where a designated physical environment was designed to allow students to quickly access a quieter location to practice self-regulation and calming strategies. Principal Mark McCain said he formed an NCPS Healthy Schools Committee to focus on supporting mental health, based on data collected
in a school climate survey. The committee includes three additional staff members – Mrs. Pike, Mrs. Doner-Day, and Mrs. Floyd, student leaders in Grades 6-8, and the community health nurse who planned and created classroom calming corners in various classrooms around the school, modeled after the school’s sensory room. “These calming corners are a designated physical environment designed to allow students to quickly access a quieter location to practice prescribed self-regulation and calming strategies,” said McCain. “The spaces include visuals of breathing practices, soft lighting, kinesthetic manipulatives, mats/beanbag chairs, noise-cancelling

headphones and other mindful resources.” Ophea is a not-for-profit organization that champions healthy, active living in schools and communities and leads the provincial Healthy Schools initiative. O p h e a ’s H e a l t h y S c h o o l s Certification recognizes and celebrates school communities for promoting and enhancing the health and wellbeing of students, school staff and the broader community. Participating schools complete the Six-Step Healthy Schools Process, which aligns with the Ministry of Education’s Foundations for a Healthy School resource. Through a point-based system, schools planned their Healthy Schools process over
the course of the school year. Schools outline the steps needed to achieve certification and apply to be certified as a gold, silver or bronze. “We are proud to be part of the 238 schools across Ontario that have been certified as being a healthy school,” says Paula Murphy, Superintendent of Education and Well-Being, SCSDB. “Our schools focused on many areas - physical activity, healthy eating, safety and injury prevention, growth and development, mental health and addictions – to support the SCDSB’s strategic goal of well-being.” SCDSB schools earned seven golds, three silvers, four bronzes and one participant level certification.
