NCPS annex goes up for sale on open market

by Trina Berlo The Nottawasaga and Creemore Public School annex, more commonly referred to as the old school, is on the open real estate market as of June 29.

The school property is listed for $675,000, with Sutton Group Incentive Realty in Barrie.

Locals have been speculating what would be the fate of the former Creemore school since it closed in 2014. For the past few years, the Simcoe County District School Board has moved through the process of declaring the property surplus and putting it up for sale.

The annex is located on 1.8 acres, at the corner of Caroline and Collingwood streets.

According to the listing, the 11,694-square-foot two-storey 1917 building, with an addition in 1995, is being sold in its current capacity. The

property last year.

At that time, staff reported, overnight accommodation of persons, be it residential or institutional, would not be permitted due to the lands being located in the floodway, as such, the lands are not suitable for the municipality to acquire for a housing project.

The current Institutional Zoning allows for the following uses: Career counselling centre; place of worship; job training centre; library; museum; art gallery; government office or government works building; health care centre (excluding hospitals); cemetery, including an accessory funeral home or a crematorium; or public works yard and facilities with accessory outdoor storage (excluding hazardous substances and gas storage).

Nancy Woods recognized as founder of storytellers circle

by Trina Berlo Dufferin Circle of Storytellers founder Nancy Woods was presented a certificate of appreciation by Mulmur Township Wednesday, in recognition of being the driving creative force behind the organization, and her contribution to community.

“I would not be standing here if not for a remarkable group of very talented people,” said Woods.

Since 1994, the group has been telling stories in schools, churches, libraries, seniors homes, museums and the local pub.

“We tell stories that are original, traditional and native about people who have lived here and contributed for over 150 years,” said Woods.

“Storytelling is alive and well in these hills. This is really great.”

An action plan for handling the opioid crisis in Simcoe Muskoka The Simcoe Muskoka Opioid Strategy (SMOS) Steering Committee released a strategy Wednesday to address opioid use, addiction, and overdose in the region.

The action plan reflects more than a year’s worth of work. It incorporates input from about 45 local agencies and organizations, and the voices of individuals who have experienced the harms of opioid misuse, whether directly or through friends and family.

“Opioids are prescribed for a variety of legitimate reasons, but prescription and illicit opioid misuse, addiction and overdose demand urgent attention,” said Dr. Rebecca Van Iersel, co-chair of SMOS. “It’s time for action to help people living in the communities of Simcoe and Muskoka, which is exactly what this comprehensive strategy outlines.”

The action plan’s completion could not come soon enough, said Dr. Lisa Simon, co-chair of SMOS, as statistics for 2017 show 74 confirmed and four probable opioid overdose deaths in Simcoe Muskoka. These 78 deaths represent a 70 per cent increase over the 2016 total of 46 deaths, and continue to show that the impact in Simcoe Muskoka is above the provincial

average.

“The impact of opioids in our region has been devastating,” Dr. Simon said.

“Deaths are only the tip of the iceberg, with huge effects on individuals, families, communities, and service providers. As was said to me by an individual with lived experience of opioid use, we cannot let this become our new normal.”

The SMOS plan is structured around seven key pillars for action, including prevention, treatment/clinical practice, harm reduction, enforcement, emergency management, data and evaluation, and lived experience. Many of the initiatives included in the pillar action plans have already begun to take shape. Examples include: • The website preventOD.ca is now live. Managed by the County of Simcoe, it contains resources for organizations working on this issue, as well as information and tools for the public, including anonymous reporting of bad drugs.

• A collaborative early warning alert system for outbreaks of overdoses is being developed, with some alerts being issued through the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit since last summer.

Both co-chairs commented on the effectiveness of the SMOS coalition of organizations and people from many different walks of life in our communities. The dedication all members have shown to this project is an indication of how serious the opioid crisis is in Simcoe Muskoka.

The Simcoe Muskoka Opioid Strategy is a multi-sector comprehensive strategy aimed at reducing opioid harms in Simcoe and Muskoka.

Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson is a cabinet minister in Doug Ford’s new provincial Progressive Conservative majority government.

Wilson will serve as Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade.

“It’s always a tremendous honour to be asked to serve in cabinet by the Premier and I look forward to this new challenge,” said Wilson in a media release.

In last month’s election, Wilson received 34,094 votes, compared to 13,444 for NDP candidate David Matthews, 8,780 for Liberal Dan Hambly, 4,192 for Green Jesseca Perry and 453 for John Wright.

“This is an exciting time for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario,” said Wilson. “For the first time in 15 years, we will form a government under the leadership of Premier Doug Ford. I look forward to serving in this new government and I am excited about the future and the opportunities to do great work for all Ontarians. This will truly be a government for the people.”

He listed his priorities for the term in office as: the redevelopment of Collingwood General and Marine Hospital and Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston; opening four new beds at Hospice Georgian Triangle Campbell House; reviewing the decision to close the Ontario Tree Seed Plant in Angus; new washrooms for Wasaga Beach and clean-up of the waterfront.

Opinion Proud to see Pride flag fly Congratulations to Councillor Connie Leishman for speaking up at Clearview’s June 25 council meeting in support of flying the Pride flag. It may have seemed like a lost cause but raising the issue once more has resulted in a July flag-raising.

Kudos to Councillor Doug Measures who was able to make a suggestion that provided a workaround for the lack of flagpoles at town hall.

As a result, the rainbow flag will be raised at the Joint Emergency Services hub on Highway 26.

Fierté Simcoe Pride has gone from seeing one flag flown in 2012 to a raising and/or proclamation from 22 communities in Simcoe in 2017.

Last year Springwater flew the rainbow flag for the first time, making it the final community to support Simcoe Pride. It can now be said that all member municipalities in Simcoe, the county itself and its First Nation communities support pride in some way.

Fierté Simcoe Pride president Brandon Rhèal Amyot said when Clearview didn’t raise the flag 2015-2017, the proclamations still counted as municipal support.

It is more meaningful to make a public display of that support by flying the colourful and highlyvisible flag, holding a public flag-raising ceremony in addition to a proclamation, which is made in empty council chambers and recorded in minutes read by only a few people.

Over seven years, Fierté Simcoe Pride has worked to build a relationship with local government. They have been patient and reasonable, yet persistent. In that time we have watched communities become more inclusive and accepting of people who identify as LGBTQ+. Activists near and far are to be credited for changing societal views.

The new provincial sexual education curriculum (now at risk of being changed) in the later elementary school grades touches on gender identity and sexual orientation, helping to open a dialogue, reduce stigma and create an understanding among peers.

There are people who don’t agree with having such dialogue or with any type of sexuality that isn’t heterosexual but it doesn’t stop it from being a reality. For too long people have been alienated or forced to be secretive in order to avoid persecution.

Raising a flag says, loud and clear, you are a part of this community and you are accepted. You have the right to live your life with confidence and stability.

It may not be a fully realized truth but it is a goal of people in the community and beyond. You have advocates. It is a powerful message.

The flag is unambiguous. Everyone knows what it means, around the world. We are so privileged to live in a society where we have the choice of raising a flag that has such a clear message. It is a shame and a wasted opportunity not to.

The pride flag has more meaning than a Crime Stoppers flag or a Diabetes flag. No one is pro Diabetes. This is a different conversation and Clearview has spoken.

Press identified as Leverless Monona Editor: I paid a brief visit to the office of The Creemore Echo in the company of local historian, Chris Raible.

During our visit I became interested in the posted photo of The Creemore Star office of bygone days, and was trying to identify the equipment in the photo.

The Washington press in the front left of the photo was easy enough; but, the cylinder press hidden just behind it and the male figure was more challenging.

Realizing that it must be a “travelling cylinder” (as opposed to a fixed cylinder, travelling bed press), I speculated out loud that it might be a Leverless Monona, a proposal that seemed to spark some amusement.

Well, I was right (more luck than anything). So, I thought you might want to know that the Leverless Monona was a relatively inexpensive newspaper press, designed in the 1890s for the weekly newspaper market as an improved successor to the Prouty “Grasshopper” press of the 1880s.

The Prouty company came out with a series of lightweight, inexpensive travelling cylinder presses, but they were manufactured in Madison, Wisc.

I have family members, business associates and friends who are openly gay and transgender. I have absolutely no issue with that, but when is it right for a majority of Clearview councillors to pick one special interest group over any other to fly a flag at a place that we pay for as a democratic society to represent all of us?

Moreover, when is it right for our municipal government (or any government), to start assisting special interest groups to achieve their stated goals, as opposed to simply advocating for all constituents for equal opportunity within our society and individual neighborhoods?

Clearview councillors, do your job.

Quit wasting your time and our hardearned tax dollars on advocating for special interest groups. You aren’t the lobbyists. You are supposed to be the government. Look after the interests of the majority first. We have a number of pressing issues that need to be dealt with without you pandering to five per cent of the population just to score a few political brownie points.

It was duly registered as Smithville.

Grandfather was to get any returns he could by selling lots. Then when he applied for a post office, the postal authorities reported there was already a post office named Smithville in Lincoln County. The station was Glen Huron, the place was legally Smithville and the post office was Smithdale.

There was a little boom around Smithdale during the building of the railroad. A hotel, store, blacksmith shop and two or three homes were built but gradually all but about six homes disappeared.

Grandfather was the postmaster until his death, when my father, David, succeeded to the title. The actual handling of the mail was sublet. The income was insignificant, not more than one hundred dollars a year which included carrying the mail twice daily to the trains.

A grand opening was held for The Dog Park, nicknamed the Clearview EcoBark, June 26. The fenced park is equipped with tunnels, ramps, a drinking water fountain, a dog washing station, leash holders, benches and picnic tables. In addition, to ensure security and overall safety of pets, there is a double gated entrance to prevent dogs from running off when entering or exiting. The dog park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset and is located near the North East boundary of the EcoPark. The main parking lot for the dog park is accessed from the public works yard at 5833 County Road 96 (formerly 27/28 Sideroad), Stayner.

Two stunt driving charges laid in Mulmur Dufferin OPP Traffic unit officers charged two drivers with stunt driving excessive speed last weekend.

The first incident occurred at 2:25 p.m. when officers clocked a westbound Honda at 138 km in a posted 80 km per hour zone on Highway 89 at the Blind Line in Mulmur Township.

The 30-year-old male driver from Mississauga was charged with stunt driving.

The other three occupants of this vehicle were charged with having open liquor in the vehicle.

The second incident occurred at 3:20 p.m. at the same location when a westbound Honda was clocked at 134 km per hour in a posted 80 km per hour zone. A 28-year-old male driver from Mississauga was charged with stunt driving.

In both incidents each driver had their driver’s license suspended and their vehicle impounded for seven days.

These incidents are concerning as this is the seventh charge of stunt driving Dufferin OPP have laid in past two weekends.

Dufferin’s forest continues to grow In the spring of 2017, John Thomson of Mulmur graciously offered a tract of forested land to the County of Dufferin.

The Thomson family owned the 29.58-acre property for more than 50 years (the family first began acquiring property in Mulmur in 1901).

Adjacent to the Little Tract of the Dufferin County Forest this new property, which is transected by the Lisle Creek, has been officially designated as the Thomson Tract by County Council.

Warden Paul Mills. “The generosity that the Thomson family and other property owners have shown over the years by donating land to the County ensures additional publicly-accessible natural spaces across Dufferin County.

When asked why he donated the land to the County, Thomson said that he “couldn’t think of a better use for the property than to make it a County forest for everyone to enjoy”.

At more than 2,600 acres, the Dufferin County Forest is now comprised of 14 distinct tracts that are located across the County. This newly acquired tract

of land will be managed by the county of Dufferin on a sustainable, multi-use basis.

The forest tracts serve many important functions including erosion and water control, natural heritage protection, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities, and support of the rural economy through timber production and employment opportunities.

Visitors are welcome to explore the Thomson Tract and the interpretive trail on the adjacent Little Tract daily.

House of Stitches participates in Row by Row Creemore House of Stitches in Creemore is welcoming kids through to October 31, by participating in Row by Row Junior.

It’s the kids’ version of the widely popular summertime travel event for quilt making fans known as Row by Row Experience. Kids visit shops in person and collect a free sewing pattern designed just for them to make. They’ll find encouragement and be inspired by the colorful, creative world of sewing right in their own hometown.

“We want to introduce kids to the intrinsic benefits of learning how to sew,” says Janet Lutz, creator of Row by Row Experience. “Making things on today’s modern sewing machines incorporates all the elements of STEM education in an artful way that builds self-esteem and perseverance.”

When offered for the first time in 2017, Row by Row Junior was the largest initiative of its kind ever attempted in the sewing industry. This year, six new patterns and project ideas designed around the theme “Sew Musical” will appeal to kids and their families.

“Fostering intergenerational relationships and learning to sew at home is important to the Row by Row Junior program,” says Lutz. Meet the girls at Miller's Dairy Day, July 14 Miller’s Dairy will be introducing samples of three flavours of its new ice cream at Dairy Day July 14.

Collingwood fair board volunteers will have the honour of scooping the first cones of the new line of ice cream, said hosts Johnny and Marie Miller.

Magicians Super Sarah and Incredi Brent are returning this year to entertain, along with The Griddle Pickers, bluegrass and old-time country band.

Darci-que and Emilie are making buttons, cow crafts and balloon animals, there will also be bubbles galore and classic roadsters and antique tractors will be on display.

The headliners, of course, are the “girls” – the jersey cows that produce Millerʼs Dairyʼs high quality milk.

There will be lots of food, by Affairs Catering, the Collingwood Fair Board and Clayton with his famous roast corn on the cob and this year Grounded Coffee Co. from Midland.

Dairy Day is from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Admission is free. Visitors are encouraged to visit the bottling plant first, on their way to the barn.

Creemore Valley Classics in town, July 14 The 11th annual Creemore Valley Classics is July 14.

This year’s show feature is a “Battle of the Brands”. Organizers have asked participants to set up a display that supports the claim that their brand is the best.

The show is open to classic cars and low production modern classics.

Already registered for the show, is a 1984 Oshkosh Hemtt (Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck) and a vintage camper. Get a sneak peak on the Creemore Valley Classics Facebook page.

There is a fee to enter the show and all proceeds will be donated to the CCI shop class. Winners will get trophies designed by organizer Corey Finkelstein and made by Iron Butterfly with plasmacut steel and natural wood bases.

Live music will be provided by the Full Circle Band in the Creemore Springs Beer garden.

The show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Mill Street, Creemore. There are road closures associated with the event including parts of Mill, Caroline, Elizabeth and Edward.

Mosquito bats erupt for 29 runs in Bolton

by Marc Dupuis Creemore’s Peewee team was back in action on Wednesday night hosting Collingwood. The two-week layoff seemed to hurt them and they looked rusty falling behind 8-4. The tides turned in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Creemore bats came alive, cashing in 11 runs, leading to a 15-8 final. Landon Grant returned from injury to pick up the win and Creemore improved to a league best 8-1-3 record.

Next up is Collingwood #2 Wednesday July 11 in Creemore.

The Mosquito team had their doubleheader in Bolton last Sunday rained out, but they made the trip there to make up one of the games on Tuesday. Lukas Bennington went 4-4 with 7 RBIs and three separate

players scored 4 runs in a 29-7 route. Creemore is sitting at 5-2 now during regular season play. Next up Sunday in Barrie for a doubleheader.

The Senior team has shown quite a bit of heart from their nucleus that continues to battle. They’ve gone 2-5 over the last seven games but posted a positive run differential in that span. The highlight over the last two weeks would be Elijah Gardinerʼs complete game win in Mansfield last Wednesday. Gardiner played the last few years in Mansfield before coming to the Braves last fall for OBAs. Jeff Akitt, Tom Gateman, Brandon Watson and Craig Bessant will be representing Creemore in the NDBL All-Star game Saturday, July 7. Next up, Creemore hosts Mansfield Sunday, July 8 at 1 p.m.

After a minimum amount of time, and with pre-tests done in class, students participate in a 2-4 hour grading to test on their skills, knowledge, and attitude.

Be aware of ongoing scams, police warn

Pride awards nominations open Fierté Simcoe Pride (FSP) announces open nominations for the 4th annual Simcoe County Pride Awards, presented during the 7th annual Fierté Simcoe Pride (July 30 August 12).

The awards recognise the accomplishments of gender and sexually (GSD) individuals, allies, organizations and inclusive businesses.

FSP recognizes the work of individuals, organizations and businesses that strive to celebrate diversity and promote an inclusion. The Awards will honour a GSD resident and youth, a community, an organization and business, and a GSD artist for their contributions that make our county a better place to live, work and grow.

Categories for the awards: Youth of the Year, Person of the Year, Organization of the Year, Business of the Year, Community of the Year and Honourary Award for the Arts. ​Nominations close July 13, and are submitted by the public using online forms hosted on the FSP website.

Nominees will be announced July 23, and recipients in the five categories will be announced at the Awards Gala.

Each submission will be reviewed by the Awards Committee. The award recipients are voted on by a secret ballot by a Jury Panel supervised by the co-chairs of the Committee. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and other agency-related extortion threats have continued to sustain significant financial losses by unsuspecting victims in recent weeks.

In 2017, the Extortion and Phishing Scam claimed 1,544 victims in Ontario losing approximately $3 million from more than 8,576 complaints. Police admit only 5 percent of the crimes are actually reported.

The CRA will never request by email, text or phone, any personal information such as passport, credit card or bank account information.

Jim Richards presents Willie Burnett $1,204 in winnings from the Creemore Legion 50-50 draw. Burnett bought the winning ticket at Ride for Dads, of which he is a participant and a member of the executive. The other half of the money is used to support Legion veteran programs and local activities for children.

Stayner Hitmen revive Pink in the Rink Stayner Hitmen Lacrosseʼs second annual Pink in the Rink will take place at the Stayner Arena on August July 23.

The exhibition game against Fort Erie Hawks will take place at 7:30 p.m. as a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Last year, the inaugural event raised more than $1,200 for the cause.

Admission costs $5 per person. The team is hope to fill the arena with an audience dressed in pink to support the cause. The game will be televised by Rogers TV.

Creemore Legion Branch 397 wish to acknowledge the tremendous support from the community to the July 1st Canada Day 2018 Celebrations.

The day’s events included a brunch and lunch BBQ served by the Ladies Auxiliary. Most enjoyed their lunch inside including the children’s games held in the air-conditioned hall during the afternoon.

The Fire Department, Clearview Station #4, led the way for the Bike Parade. All the children were thrilled to follow the fire trucks with all the sirens and horns blaring. Thank you Pauline MacIntosh & Ken Day for your hard work in arranging the parade. It was a very hot day for the ball hockey tournament organized by the Fire Department. The evening celebrations started at 6 p.m. with a BBQ prepared by the Legion and followed by the presentation of Citizen of the Year.

Ken Thornton & Gayle Millsap were well deserved recipients of Citizen of the Year 2018. The Baker Magic Show was a big hit for children of all ages. The highlight of the evening was once again the Fireworks display!

The winner of the Legion’s 50/50 draw was Willie Burnett of Orillia, who purchased his winning ticket on the May 26th Ride for Dad (which supports Prostate Cancer) during the group’s lunch stop at the Creemore Legion. Congratulations Willie on your $1,204 prize!

To everyone who worked tirelessly to make this an exceptional day, thank you.

Cleary, Raymond Milton of St. Thomas passed away peacefully with family at his side on Friday, June 15, 2018 at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital in his 88th year. Beloved husband of the late Lona Marie Cleary (2012). Loving father of Ronald Cleary (Linda) of Sarnia, Don Cleary (Marsha) of St. Thomas, Dale Cleary (Ruth) of St. Thomas, and Karen Zegers (Colin) of St. Thomas. Dear grandfather of Jason, Jodi, Rianne, Kenzie, Shelby, Brodie, Tyler, Kaitlin, Kayla and several greatgrandchildren and extended family.

Missed by siblings Lorne, Lyall, Dalton, Melvin, Cora and Bonnie.

Ray is predeceased by his brother Ernest and sister Doris. Raymond was born on August 25, 1930, in Dunedin, Ontario, son of the late gordon and Ella Cleary. Ray worked in construction in his younger years, was a milkman for Silverwood Dairy and was a small business owner of Rae-Mar Building Products. He was a long time member of St. Thomas Knox Presbyterian Church. As per Ray’s wishes there will be no memorial service. Cremation has already taken place. A private family graveside service at St. Thomas Union Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Arrangements entrusted to the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home, 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas (519-631-0570).

Remembrances may be made to St. Thomas Knox Presbyterian Church.

Stratton, Morag

Morag Campbell Stratton passed away peacefully in the palliative care unit at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto on Thursday, June 28, 2018. Morag arrived in Canada almost 40 years ago to live with the Arrell family. Her favourite place in Canada for the last 17 years was to visit and stay in the hills of Mulmur where she enjoyed her communing with nature as well as extending her broad circle of friends.

Morag also had the opportunity to put into practice her rural farming skills learned in Perthshire. Morag travelled to Scotland annually to visit her Scottish siblings: Jim (Christine), David (Denise), Fay (Colin McIntosh),and Ann (Willie Grant). Morag’s adopted Canadian family includes Tony and Anne Arrell and children: Laura (Erik Joyal), Cameron (deceased), Ashleigh (Andrew Creighton) and Nicole Arrell Special “Nan” to Peyton, Cameron and Mackenzie Joyal, plus Marly and Rascal (Harlow) Creighton. Morag is a cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews in Scotland. Morag’s zest for life, her compassion and her acute wit will be missed by many. Cremation has taken place and her ashes will be distributed in the Mulmur Hills and in Perthshire. Special thanks are extended to Rev. Candice Bist for her insightful care during Morag’s challenging journey.

Donations can be directed to Palliative Care Unit at St Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, or Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
