Creemore resident killed in ATV accident by Trina Berlo A Creemore resident, Brett Parkes, has died of injuries sustained during an ATV accident. Parkes, 33, was a devoted husband to his high school sweetheart Suzi Stinson and his two young sons, Kane and KC. On the morning of Saturday, April 28, a passerby came upon the scene on Lavender Hill Road, just south of Dunedin, where Parkes had been trapped for several hours. Clearview Fire Chief Colin Shewell said rescuers were called at 8 a.m. With firefighters, paramedics and police on scene, the injured man was extricated and taken to hospital in serious condition. Shewell said firefighters had to cut some trees and stabilize the ATV before removing him from the scene, which was next to the roadway. “The initial investigation indicates the male occupant had been trapped under the ATV for several hours prior to emergency services being dispatched to the collision scene. Everything he did was motivated by a desire to support his family. An online fundraiser to help cover the costs of finishing a renovation to the family home, which Parkes was diligently working away at so his family could move in. They are welcoming donations of money and are calling out to people who have the ability to help complete the renovation. “We are praying that as a community, we can come together as one and at least relieve some financial stress from this young family during this extremely devastating time of need and allow Brett to rest easier knowing that his beautiful family has support through all of this,” wrote Allison Stinson on the Go Fund Me Page. by Trina Berlo Municipal election nominations opened Tuesday and three people have already filed their paperwork. Incumbents Thom Paterson (for Ward 5, Creemore and Avening), Robert Walker (for Ward 3, Stayner) and Connie Leishman (Ward 6, Sunnidale Corners) have all put their names in. The nomination period, which has been shortened this time around from 37 weeks to 13 weeks, opened May 1.
The filing deadline is 2 p.m. on July 27. Candidates have to gather 25 signatures from eligible voters who support their nomination. There is also a requirement for third party advertisers to register with the municipality. The policy refers to individuals, corporations and unions that are advertising a position, either for or against a specific candidate. Third party advertising does not include “issue based” messaging promoted by community groups. Candidate information is available at town hall in Stayner and online at clearviewclerk.ca/election. Election Day is Oct. 22 and the new term of council begins on Dec. 1.
