Echo publisher gets award for community work by Trina Berlo Sara Hershoff is the 2017 recipient of the Insurance Bureau of Canada Community Award in memory of Mary Knowles. The owner and publisher of The Creemore Echo was recognized for her many contributions to the community, both professional and volunteer, at the Ontario Community Newspaper Association’s gala dinner and awards ceremony in Richmond Hill on April 20. The award, coordinated by the Ontario Community Newspapers Foundation with the support of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, recognizes dedicated newspaper employees who are constantly making a difference within their communities, in memory of Knowles, a dedicated newspaper employee and active community member who died of breast cancer in 1996. Past recipient Lois Tuffin, editorin-chief of Peterborough This Week,

The hockey dance is going back to its roots, reintroducing live music and the elimination style cash draw. It is the main fundraiser for Creemore Minor Hockey, which has been hosting the annual event for more than 25 years. The volunteer organization uses the funds to help pay for ice time. During the elimination draw every single entry is drawn throughout the night, which takes several hours, and the last three tickets are winners. The person who bought the last ticket drawn wins $5,000. The prize for second to last is $1,000 and $500 for third to last. The elimination draw method was used until about five years ago but association president Donna Harper said this year, they are hauling out the old pill bottles that hold the tickets in the wheel and the original plywood ticket board where all the tickets are displayed. The live music for the dance will be performed by Little Foot, a Clearview based cover band. The Elimination Cash Draw and Dance is Saturday, May 12 at the Creemore arena. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $40, which gets two people into the dance and the draw. Otherwise people can pay $10 for admission to the dance only. Tickets are available from any member of the association, at The Creemore Echo , 3 Caroline St. W., or by calling 705-466-5082.
