Lost dog found shot in rural Clearview by Trina Berlo It is believed a pet dog was baited and shot recently in Clearview. Hercules, a 10-pound Pomeranian, escaped from a home on Centre Line Road Feb. 17. His owners were visiting the home of Shannon Eddy and Shawn Kane when the dog slipped through the door. Eddy said they spent days searching the area around Centre Line Road and Concession 6 Sunnidale, where the dog was last seen but the grueling search effort ended horrifically 10 days later when they found the dog shot to death. He was found on a nearby property that is not often used and adjacent to a vacant house. Authorities, including police, have been notified. “We feel he was ambushed. He was near a bag of turkey remains,” said Eddy, adding that they believed it was

intended as bait. The dog was shot twice with what is believed to be a 22-caliber rifle. It is believed the first shot was a flesh wound and the second was fatal. “This is a puppy that cannot be mistaken for a raccoon, or a fox, or a coyote, so this was an intentional act. There are remnants of dead animals everywhere we looked,” said Eddy. “He spent days out there fending off wildlife just to get taken down by a human. It is very upsetting.” France Lajeunesse, the founder of Aid 4 Paws Search and Recovery, became involved in the search a few days after the dog went missing. Lajeunesse said she got in touch after seeing pleas for information about Hercules on Facebook. The volunteer organization helps those in need of assistance locate (See “Dog” on page 6)

EarlyON expands pre-school program by Trina Berlo Parents with preschool children now have more access to local programs through the creation of EarlyON Child and Family Centres. Parents at the drop-in centre in Creemore are taking advantage of the opportunity for early learning and socialization. They say their children, who will ultimately go to school together, are getting to know one another, and the adults make friends of their own. The centre is also a safe place to ask parenting questions and make sure their children are on track for healthy learning habits. That is in a nutshell the intention of EarlyON, formerly Ontario Early Years Centres, where programming is geared to children, zero to six years old, including prenatal. Margie Riddell continues to facilitate the new Creemore Stay, Play and Learn program. She said age zero to six has been identified as a sensitive time for

Small Halls Festival wins two awards

The Small Halls Festival picked up two awards Friday from the Festivals & Events Ontario. The festival won ‘Best Social Media Campaign’ for Clearview Township staff’s 150-day festival photo countdown and was once again named one of the ‘Top 100’ events. “Reaching over 247,000 people on Facebook, and 133,000 people on Twitter, the countdown to the Small Halls Festival campaign helped to highlight the very best of Clearview Township,” said a media release. “A key component to the campaign was to feature the small hall facilities along with faces and places around Clearview Township, while also supporting and showcasing local volunteers, community groups, festival sponsors and local attractions.” “I would like to extend my congratulations to all hall board members, festival volunteers and Township staff that worked diligently to ensure the continued success of the Small Halls Festival,” said Mayor Christopher Vanderkruys. “Being awarded and recognized as both a Top 100 Festival and with the Best Social Media campaign award on a provincialwide scale is a great accomplishment.” The 2018 Small Halls Festival is happening Sept. 27-30.
