Library unveils plans for new Stayner branch

by Trina Berlo Clearview Public Library building committee member Bob Charlton presented plans for the new Stayner branch at council’s June 5 meeting.

“We have been waiting a long time for this to come to fruition and we are making excellent progress,” said Charlton.

He said the board is very pleased with the result so far and that the design is a work-in-progress, which could change, dependent on cost.

The new branch will be added on to the Stayner arena. Architectural renderings, said Charlton, show a dramatic new shared entrance to the library and the arena hall. The library will have large windows, vaulted ceilings, a group study room, two small rooms for studying, tutoring and private meetings, a community living room with a fireplace and workspaces,

In March, council selected Architects

ATVs granted access to certain township roads

by Trina Berlo It has taken more than a year, but ATVs have been given permission to use a limited number of roads in Clearview Township.

Gerry LeMay, general manager of transportation and drainage, has been working with Central Ontario ATV Club director Soren Klemmensen to work out a compromise after council narrowly denied access to a majority of township roads last September.

The ATV club was looking to create a trail system that would connect communities while creating tourism

opportunities in Clearview.

The route approved by council members June 5 creates an east-west corridor with access north to Wasaga Beach and south to Essa Township.

ATVs will not have access to Creemore or Stayner but will be able to get to New Lowell and Glen Huron.

Councillor Thom Paterson requested that permission be delayed by 30 days to allow enough time to properly inform the residents living on the affected roads.

“If we’re going to have ATVs, it seems like a good solution,”

said Deputy Mayor Barry Burton who agreed with Paterson’s idea to communicate the plan to residents, but that idea was defeated.

“Holding back the bylaw is counterproductive,” said Councillor Deborah Bronée. “It’s already watered down from what I’d like to see.”

She said the approved route will have virtually no economic impact on the township because ATV riders won’t be able to get to many amenities.

She said she would support the minimal route because it will allow

ATVers to have a presence in the township so people can see that they are responsible drivers and they can start making inroads with landowners and start setting up trails on private property.

“It should be more open,” said Bronée.

“We are just creating a drivethrough situation,” agreed Mayor Christopher Vanderkruys.

Councillor Shawn Davidson referred to the route as a baby step, saying some acceptance is required before there is an expansion.

Concerns raised about high ceilings, windows (Continued from page 1) altered the initial plans to minimize a cantilevered roof at the entrance to reduce the cost.

Council approved a total budget of $3.2 million for the construction of the library, including the architect’s fees, landscaping and renovations to the arena hall, which the library will be using for programming.

Charlton said the proposal was chosen because of its minimal impact on the arena hall. As a result of the addition, a small portion of the hall will be transformed into a hallway space and a retractable wall will be added to

divide the hall.

The renovation will result in the creation of a shared lobby and perhaps a space to accommodate a Clearview sports hall of fame.

Councillors Doug Measures and Deborah Bronée expressed concerns about the high ceilings and large windows and how would impact the cost of cleaning, heating and controlling humidity.

The library board has committed to raising $250,000 toward the cost of construction but Charlton said the fundraising campaign will be rolling out at a later date.

The way we were

Happy anniversary NCPS Nottawasaga and Creemore Public School is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

For those who have been here longer than three years, you may still catch yourself referring to the school as the senior site, as it was known when the annex on Caroline Street West was still open. For those who have been here longer than 50 years, as our cherished historian Helen Blackburn says, you may refer to it as the new school.

Either way, the school has played an important part in the lives of many people in this community and hopefully it will continue to do so for many years to come. An elementary school is a vital part of a healthy community. It is essential to attracting young families and maintaining a vibrant multi-generational community.

For those who missed the exhibit of photos from the school’s last century, they will be on display again this Saturday at Creemore Log Cabin from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to view the photos back to 1917 and hear stories retold by former students.

Give Canada the best birthday gift, a maple tree

by Kyle Regeling Somebody is turning 150 this year!

Fortunately, our great country is looking fabulous for its age. Are you in need of a way to celebrate this monumental birthday? Of course, this is besides wearing a toque, watching hockey and adding “eh” to the end of every sentence! How about an exciting way to celebrate that establishes a longstanding legacy and will benefit every Canadian. Not only will this present be a gift that keeps on giving, it will be a great way to spend time with family and friends. So this summer, why not plant a native maple tree in honour of our home and native land.

The maple tree is our national tree and is proudly displayed at the centre of our flag. The leaf is the symbol that represents our nation, unified and strong, from coast to coast. It is the icon that represents us on the world stage and embodies the hearty Canadian spirit. To put it simply, there is nothing that is more Canadian than a red maple leaf emblem.

There are 10 species that are native to Canada. The most prominent in Ontario are the sugar, red and silver maples.

A common misconception is that the Norway maple is native, when it is a non-native species and considered to be invasive in Ontario. Maple trees provide excellent ecological benefits and are accustomed to the climate and conditions of Canada. In fact,

Maple Leaf native maples have been growing here long before the official formation of the country of Canada. Many studies suggest that native varieties are much better for local wildlife and are more resilient to the cold weather storms than non-native species and cultivated versions. In the fall the maple trees put on a show, displaying gorgeous shades of orange, red and yellow. This magnificent tree also gives back to Canadians by sharing its sap, which is turned into the delicious, sweet maple syrup. Canada produces almost all the maple syrup in the world!

SCI gives Pride flag place of honour

by Trina Berlo Stayner Collegiate Institute will be displaying the Pride flag in its main lobby this month.

It is the first time the school has officially marked Pride Month and principal Janice Ellerby said the flag has been given a place of honour until the end of the school year.

The flag-raising was initiated by the school’s Gender Sexuality Alliance and Equity Club after members attended a Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Social Changemakers conference for students in Grades 7-12,

to promote social change and promote change within their community.

“We all wanted to do something for Pride Month,” said Bayley Coutts.

They organized a button making activity, advocating for inclusivity through positive messages and organized the flag-raising.

SCDSB equity and inclusion team member Glenn Stephenson said the flag is a symbol of inclusion and it is noteworthy that it was only last year that the Pride flag was flown at the parliament buildings for the first time.

“The flag tells members of the

LGBTTIQQ2SAP community that they are welcome and can be their true selves at Stayner Collegiate Institute and that they have allies,” said Stephenson.

He said although it is a small step speaks volumes to the community and will not go unnoticed.

“This is tremendous work on behalf of the school and the school board, said Brandon Amyot, president of Fierté Simcoe Pride, the organization that encourages municipalities to raise pride flags and proclaim Pride Month.

“Thank you for having us.”

Simcoe County Forestry is reminding residents, municipalities and stakeholders about steps they can take to manage the impact from the invasive Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).

The EAB is a wood boring beetle that is 8-14 mm long, bright metallic green with a coppery-reddish or purple colour to the abdomen. The insect attacks and kills Ash trees. Emerald Ash Borer attacks all true Ash trees including White, Black and Green Ash (Mountain-Ash is not true ash and not a host) and kills more than 99 per cent of infected trees. EAB was first discovered in Simcoe County in 2013, and has been found in 11 of the 16 municipalities within the County of Simcoe, along with the City of Barrie.

Simcoe County Forestry is setting traps in strategic locations throughout the county this summer to continue monitoring the spread of EAB. Monitoring reports will be provided to county council and member municipalities later this summer.

“Invasive insects like the EAB remain costly issues for property owners, including municipalities, and continue to have a negative impact on our environment and forests,” said Graeme Davis, Forester, County of Simcoe. “It is important that all landowners become aware of this issue and what options are available to them, so that they can make informed decisions before it is too late.”

GNE breaks ground on new pavilion BIA marks anniversary with Foundersʼ Dinner Creemore BIA is celebrating three decades of commerce with a Founders’ Dinner.

Past and current members, and the wider community are invited to celebrate and learn about the evolution of Creemore.

“We hope to use the evening not only as a sales piece for Creemore showcasing our best to other BIAs, chambers, tourism and economic development at various levels of government but also as a means of engaging and uniting our membership in future marketing endeavours,” said BIA president Jackie Durnford. “Of course we’re also hoping it’s just a fun evening for everyone.”

Speaking about marketing the small town experience, is John Wiggins, past BIA member and founder of Creemore Springs Brewery, which is also celebrating its 30-year anniversary.

The Founder’s Dinner starts with a cocktail party, followed by a farm-to-table dinner highlighting local chefs, farmers, brewers, winemakers, cider makers and more.

The BIA will be acknowledging some local businesses with awards for their achievements.

The Collingwood Agricultural Society is breaking ground on a new pavilion Saturday.

The 50- by 80-foot pavilion is funded in part thanks to revenue from solar panels installed on the roof of the exhibition hall.

“The solar power has put us in a position where we are able to manage more. We have somewhat of a guaranteed income,” said society president Maureen McLeod.

She said, for three days during the annual fall fair the pavilion, which will be fitted with detachable cattle ties, will function as event space. It will be a place where 4H youth can tie up their animals and show animals if the weather doesn’t cooperate. The rest of the time it will be available for weddings, family reunions and picnics because, a lot of people

are coming to the fairgrounds for an outdoor wedding, said McLeod.

The pavilion will be ready for the fair this fall and the added space has already prompted the committee to do some revamping of the fair program. For example, the additional space will make room for a Welsh pony show, a new feature this year.

The Society is also kicking off a fundraising campaign and is planning to sell memorial plaques and is offering other ways of supporting the effort.

The official groundbreaking is at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, followed by the steak dinner and dance. There will be two fundraising auctions underway that night. For tickets call, 705-444-0308.

Anna Carruthers named CCI junior athlete of the year The accolades continue for 15-year-old Avening resident Anna Carruthers.

The Grade 10 Collingwood Collegiate Institute (CCI) student was honored this week as the Female Junior Athlete of the Year. The award was handed out at the CCI athletic banquet on Tuesday, June 5. She also took home awards for cross-country running and track and field.

Contributing to her overall excellence Carruthers was cited for her accomplishments in all three sports in which she competes. Her track and cross country running coach Al Coukell stated proudly on Tuesday night, “Whether it is on the trails, on the track or on the slopes she is one of CCI’s and one of Ontario’s best.”

As a top track athlete in both the 1,500- and 3,000-metre races Carruthers has been the regional Georgian Bay Secondary School Athletic (GBSSA) champion. Then going on to be a top-10 finisher at the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletic (OFSAA) championships in the 1,500 metre. In the winter she was a key member of the double gold medal OFSAA downhill ski team. In the fall Carruthers was the GBSSA Cross Country running champion leading the CCI team to a fine showing sixth at OFSAA. Carruthers told The Echo, “Hard work, dedication and doing something I love made it an honour to win these awards.”

Hogback Tract controlled burn cancelled The controlled burn, scheduled to occur in the Hogback Tract in Clearview Township (between the communities of Brentwood and New Lowell) this spring, has been cancelled.

Due to ongoing wet conditions on the site, suitable requirements to achieve the desired results have not occurred and the window to conduct the burn this spring has closed.

The site will continue to be monitored by staff.

Consultation will occur with consultants to determine if a controlled burn can occur later this fall or in spring 2018.

Facade improvement plan presented to public A public meeting was held June 5 for the Community Improvement Plan initiated by Clearview Township director of community services Mara Burton.

The façade improvement plan is meant to encourage the beautification of commercial areas throughout the township.

The plan is to offer businesses 50 per cent funding up to a maximum of $5,000 with an additional $2,500 for work to the side or back of the business.

She said based on input the plan has been tweaked to include franchises and landscaping but they still plan to exclude banks and financial institutions.

The hope is to encourage businesses to reclaim the historical features of commercial buildings, where they exist. For example, Burton said non back-lit façade signs, projecting signs,

storefront cornices, windows, glass front doors, gooseneck lighting and awnings are elements that the township is looking to fund.

Owners or tenants with permission from the owner, are eligible for onetime grants, with a minimum of $500 application.

“We only have so much money to go around,” said Burton, adding staff will be looking for applications that will have an impact on the overall look of the building. She is proposing to bring the applications to council for final approval.

Council has approved $50,000 in this year’s budget for the program.

Burton said there is a possibility that staff would be ready for the first intake later this summer.

No members of the public commented on the plan at Monday’s meeting.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the CAO, the General Manager, Parks, Culture and Recreation is responsible for overseeing and managing the effective operations of all Parks and Recreation and Community Culture and Tourism services, as well as all Recreational Facilities, including the development and recommendation of policies, programing and long-range strategies to guide growth and development in the municipality.

The preferred candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of parks and recreation as well as cultural and tourism development, design, delivery and evaluation strategies as well as a working knowledge of provincial legislation and policies that effect municipal programs. The preferred candidate will also possess extensive experience and success in federal and provincial grant / funding application processes as well as formulating annual and capital department budgets

Experience and proven ability in health and safety, accessibility regulations, labour relations and computer skills. In addition, the candidate will have excellent customer service, interpersonal, project/time management, problem solving, and presentation and communication skills.

Salary: Salary range offered for this position is $85,776 to $105,305 plus a competitive benefits package.
