Hennessy's closing after 60 years in business It is indeed the end of an era.

Don Hennessy Ltd. in Duntroon will close this summer. For 60 years, the business has been at the centre of the village.

Back in 1975, Don and Margaret Hennessy bought the “Checker Garage” service station from Jack Swalm, and they sold BA brand gas (British American), which later became Gulf.

“We had $10 in change for the till and $200 in the bank,” remembers Margaret. “Don came home thoroughly upset after the first day, when he was there from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and only took in $9. However things did start to improve and we were able to carry on.”

Shortly after buying the garage, Don, in addition to repairing vehicles, built a tow truck and put it into service.

Margaret pumped gas and worked the counter.

When the country schools were closed, Margaret drove the first school bus in Nottawasaga Township, taking students to Duntroon Public School.

They also bought an ambulance service, which they operated for five years.

She said, by then, the garage business was doing well and they were able to sell the ambulance.

In 1959, they started selling David Brown tractors and other farm equipment until the manufacturer was bought by Case. They later changed

to Belarus and then Zetor, eventually becoming a Husqvarna dealer.

“Don was a good salesman,” said Margaret… “The repair shop was always busy.”

All four of their children – Lois, Susan, Bill and John – worked at the service centre in some capacity over the years.

“Everybody did what had to be done,” said Margaret. “It was a family business.”

Both sons became auto mechanics, doing their apprenticeship with their father, as did other local young men.

John left the company to work at Honda in Alliston and Bill continued to work for his father.

When the general store closed in the early 1990s, they took on the Canada Post kiosk.

Don also had an active political career moving up the ranks from councillor to Reeve of Nottawasaga Township. He was then elected to the school board before returning to council, this time with the amalgamated municipality of Clearview Township.

After Don’s death in December of 1997, Margaret signed the business over to Bill but she continued to work there regularly until an injury prevented her from doing so. But on March 19, she made a point of pumping gas to mark the 60th anniversary of the business.

June 30, and until that day they are having an end of an era clearance sale.

Bill said he was approached with an offer to buy the building and he decided

to accept.

It is not known what will take its place or where the post office boxes will be located.

The way we were

Home grown goodness We are pleased to present The Creemore Echo’s third annual Home and Garden edition, which is hitting the streets just in time for the long weekend and the official kick-off to summer.

In this edition, we are meeting people who are doing some interesting things on the homefront, producing high quality products on their own land, combining homesteading and entrepreneurship.

Their efforts feed the local market, infuse the local economy and support fellow producers.

They are among the many agripreneurs in this area, some of whom we meet every week at our local farmers’ markets. We are very fortunate to be able to put a name and face to the people who grow and produce our food.

The Creemore Farmers’ Market opens Saturday, and a new market in Mulmur is opening on Sundays.

There is always a festive vibe at opening day in Creemore as people visit with neighbours while breakfasting on pierogies and empanadas, eyeing up the stalls trying to decide what to take home for lunch.

It is also when community groups promote their summer initiatives.

The Creemore Echo crew will also be at the market the first four Saturdays during our annual subscription drive.

We thank everyone for their ongoing support and as always, we are very grateful to be able to continue to deliver a local, independent, homegrown weekly newspaper and serve as a community hub.

In addition to our annual subscription for $49 per year, which includes an early bird electronic version every Thursday evening, we appreciate our boosters and champions.

Elaine’s Chili Con Queso 1 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoons flour 1 clove garlic, minced 1 28 ounce can diced tomatoes 1 cup evaporated milk 2 cups grated cheddar cheese (you can also use Monterey Jack or Mexican mix) ¼ cup jalapenos, finely chopped (bottled or fresh) Melt butter in a large, heavy saucepan. Stir in garlic and flour; cook for 1 minute while stirring constantly. Add tomatoes; cook, Chili Con Queso is a great appetizer for family and friends to share. It’s quick and easy to make and gives just a “hit of hot” flavour provided by chopped jalapeno peppers, which you can adjust to your own taste or moderate the heat for your little ones.

So dish up a big bowl surrounded

Reduce heat, add jalapenos and cook over low heat for 3 minutes (mixture should be hot but not boiling). Remove saucepan from heat. Quickly stir in cheese, a handful at a time until it melts into the mixture. Ladle into a serving dish and serve with your favourite tortilla chips. by your favourite taco chips to enjoy while the barbeque sizzles away.

For the love of honeybees Pesticides, loss of habitat, disease, and climate change are putting stress on bees and there is a big push to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators to food security.

There has been a lot of buzz about neonicotinoids and other factors affecting bee populations.

“So many people want to help the bees, so many people notice the bees absent from their land,” said Debbie Gray, president of Bee Natural Caretakers. “Honeybees are the most widely known, adored and studied and they seem to tug on people’s heartstrings. Everybody loves the honeybee.”

Bee Natural Caretakers is a community group of beekeepers who are committed to supporting and participating in a natural, sustainable, treatment-free beekeeping.

Gray said beekeeping is exploding in popularity but people don’t have to keep bees to support the bee population.

She became interested when she

discovered wild honeybees living in a tree behind her Mulmur home, which led her to contact Ian Payne and together they started Bee Natural Caretakers because there was not another group like it. To their knowledge, the only treatment-free bee keeping group in Ontario and possibly in Canada.

It draws people from all over the place and is growing quite rapidly.

“Beekeeping is such a solitary activity that to have community and to share and learn and mentor is so critical and there are other beekeeping groups,” said Gray. “We have a slightly different focus, we don’t use any chemicals in our hives. Our focus is on pest management strategies that are natural.”

Most hobbyists have two to four hives and want to do their part to help the honeybee and put them back in their environments. The group shares expertise and tours members’ hives to see how others are managing their bees.

People are encouraged to grow bee friendly plants like lavender and sedum.

Go natural and let your grass and dandelions grow.

The dandelion is the first substantial source of nectar that the honeybee has access to in the spring, says Brian Scott, beekeeper and owner of Innisfil Creek Honey.

An entire colony of bees, on a hot day, can drink up to a litre of water or more a day, that’s what they need to produce wax, to operate the hive. Gray said there are so many ways to provide a continual water source, or bee bath, also for butterflies and other insects.

They can’t land on water so they need a perch in a shallow dish of water so they can land and get a drink. A bee bath can be as simple as arranging marbles or rocks in a shallow dish and keeping it supplied with fresh water.

Beekeepers’ tips for supporting bees 1. Be careful what you kill! I was stung several times on my property a few years ago, when I stumbled into what I thought was a hornetsʼ nest.

They were nesting in the ground in the horses’ pasture and I sprayed them with a wasp insecticide. After I inspected the dead insects, I realized they were wild bees, not wasps, says Mono beekeeper Janet Grant.

2. Support local Ontario honey producers, and preferably buy organic or natural honey that does not contain pesticides or antibiotics.

Read the labels to make sure it is 100 per cent honey, with no added corn syrup.

3. Incorporate honey into your diet, replace sugar with honey. It has many health benefits. Most of the sugar we consume is made from beets, not cane sugar. You can substitute honey in most recipes.

4. Teach your children about bees, they are amazing creatures.

5. Support organic, local farmers.

Monocultures (vast acreages of a single crop treated with herbicides and pesticides) are killing bees. The crop may provide flowers for a brief time en masse, but then quickly leave the bees with nothing to eat.

Small farms, with a variety of crops, hedgerows, flowering trees, forests, fields and marshes are a much better environment for bees to inhabit.

6. Be kind to the environment, bees need clean water, clean air, clean soil to thrive.

7. Do not buy plants or seeds treated with neonicotinoid pesticides.

Big box purchases such as flowering annuals, ornamental plants and vegetables often are treated.

8. Plant a variety of flowers on your properties. Manicured grass is a wasteland for bees.

9. Make sure that the label says Ontario Honey. Buying local honey from a beekeeper allows them to have the money to look after bees and ensure their future in Ontario.

10. Buy honey and other hive products (wax, propolis) from a beekeeper you know. That way you can ask questions about their practices (if they use miticides, if they feed the bees sugar water or leave honey for the bees) and decide for yourself what kind of beekeeping philosophy you want to support.

Farmgate Market An out-of-the-way but on-the-beatenpath store offers a wide selection of local products.

Woodfield Farm is the opposite of a convenience store, it’s an inconvenient store, says Matthew McBride, with a smile.

He and his wife and partner Jill Johnson have, since moving from London, Ont., to the countryside in Mulmur, diversified their expanding farming operation, learning as they go. Woodfield Farm is named for the London neighbourhood where they were living when they met.

“We started off with a couple of chickens and thought, it would be nice to have a couple of pigs so we could have our own pork,” said Johnson.

They had the ideal habitat for pigs at their home, said McBride, a treed area where the pigs could root around and lounge in the dappled sunlight.

Pigs forage for food, eating just about anything they can find, and ingest quite a bit of dirt, said Johnson. And what

they eat has an effect on the flavor of the meat.

It was a friend who suggested they raise sheep and now they have a fairly large flock.

Readers may recognize Woodfield Farm from the Creemore Farmers’ Market but may not be aware that in August they opened a farmgate store.

On a sunny Friday afternoon visit to the farm, the lambs are going out to pasture for the first time. Johnson notices that the ewes are mowing down the fresh grass after a long winter in the barn but the lambs are too excited to eat.

They prance around and buck playfully.

Marion Bell is in the kitchen baking lemon loaf and cranberry cookies while Dustin Biel is weeding the garden plot that will produce root vegetables and greens like Swiss chard, carrots, beets, lettuce, okra, radishes, tomatoes for sale in the store and at their market booth in Creemore on Saturday mornings and at the new Mulmur Farmers’ Market at (Continued on next page)

Share and Share alike In the lee of the escarpment, there is a sweet spot where a microclimate exists and has proven to be quite fruitful.

Even in this cool spring weather, a large garden plot perched on the edge of the hill, is protected from the elements.

The farm has been in Peter Miller’s family for three generations. With wife Naomi Miller, Mike Moutrey and Tracey Oliver, they are launching a CSA, called The Purple Co. Evidence of the old farmhouse is almost gone but the stone foundation of the barn is still there and the bones of an old milkhouse stand strong.

Last summer, four partners from Agripharm parlayed their collective knowledge gained from growing marijuana in an indoor facility at Cashtown Corners to an outdoor diversified farming model.

The land provided. They grew many varieties of herbs and vegetables and shared the bounty with friends. This year, they are inviting the community to be a part of the venture through

community shared agriculture, or CSA. Peter said the medical marijuana project opened his eyes to agriculture.

He didn’t know much about gardening when he was thrown into the business of growing and he got really excited about food production. Although the process of traditional growing is different from indoor growing, they emerged with “a lot of questions and some knowledge, just enough to be dangerous,” said Peter.

The Purple Co. is working toward organic certification and plans to produce 85 full shares this summer, which can be upsized to a family basket or downsized to a half basket, depending on how many people are sharing the food.

With the CSA model, the consumer shares the risk with the farmer, says Naomi, and everything they produce has the customer in mind.

putting in time at the indoor growing facility, she is happy to be working outside and has plans for the garden, including a cut-flower component.

Although the retail side of the farm operation is producing fresh, locally grown food, one gets the distinct impression there is a lot more to The Purple Co. There is a level of innovation taking place that is not unexpected from a group of people who worked on the front lines of a burgeoning medical marijuana industry.

They are applying old practices, such as companion planting, and without the use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides, to grow food but also experimenting with things like biochar to amend the soil, which also slows climate change.

As another prong of the operation, The Purple Co. is also working in the legal marijuana industry in Colorado.

They are hoping to one day welcome people to the Creemore property to share what it is they are discovering and learning.

“We are being a relatively open book, to connect people with the sources of nutrition,” said Peter.

For now, they are offering open communication about how they grow the more than 50 varieties of produce that will be available weekly. Pickups of food baskets and eggs will be in Creemore. Coming up Tulips The highly sought after and much anticipated limited edition official tulip bulbs created for Canada’s 150th anniversary are blooming and it is cause for celebration.

Officials are marking the blooming of the Canada 150 tulip, also known as the Maple Leaf tulip. It is white with ‘red flames’ and is supposed to bear resemblance to the Canadian flag.

There have been some issues with the colours of the blooms but in Creemore, the colours appear to be spot on.

The Creemore Horticultural Society is inviting the community to a blooming celebration at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 20 at the Cenotaph on Caroline Street East, across the street from Station on the Green. Light refreshments will be served.

Township officials and Stayner G ar den Club held a blooming ceremony at Fountain Park in Stayner on Thursday. That same day Stayner Collegiate Institute welcomed Grade 7 and 8 students from Clearview Meadows Elementary School, Byng Public School, Nottawasaga Creemore Public School and New Lowell Public School for a Canadian Celebration, which included a blooming ceremony at the school’s Canada 150 Dutch Canadian Friendship Garden.

After the opening ceremonies, the students were invited to participate in a wide variety of workshops, activities, and games, such as making butter tarts and playing crokinole, for the morning and early afternoon.

Home Hardware Stores partnered with the National Capital Commission (NCC), the official gardener of Canada’s Capital Region, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Communities in Bloom for the selection and distribution of the Canada 150 tulip.

During Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations, 300,000 Canada 150 tulips will be showcased in the NCC’s flowerbeds in the Capital Region and thousands more will bloom in community gardens across Canada.

The tulip represents a long-standing friendship between Canada and the Netherlands. In 1945, the Dutch royal family sent 100,000 tulips to Ottawa to thank Canadians for harbouring Princess Juliana and her daughters during the war. In 1943, Juliana gave birth to Princess Margriet at the hospital in Ottawa in 1943 and in 1946 sent another 20,500 bulbs with a pledge to send another 10,000 each year during her lifetime. The Canadian Tulip Festival is held in Ottawa each May in celebration of these gifts.

The place to be is The Station on the Green on Saturday, May 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., where the Creemore Horticultural Society’s annual plant sale is taking place.

This plant sale is one of the largest held in the area and has a reputation for some unusual specimens for sale, plus many plants from Creemore’s Horticultural Park.

This event is the Horticultural Society’s largest fundraiser of the year. The funds raised from this sale are used to look after the Horticultural Park, Grandmother’s Garden and the Library garden.

All plants are donated by our members, friends and neighbours and potted up by our faithful volunteers at a central location. There is a core group of members who do most of the heavy lifting, that is digging out plants when requested, dividing large clumps

of plants and driving wherever plants are available. Other members help out as they can, so it is a real collaborative effort by all concerned.

The plants are loaded onto a large flatbed trailer by volunteers and one of our biggest supporters, Bob Ransier delivers them to the Station on the day before where volunteers wait to unload them to their respective tables in the Station. All plants are labelled and priced individually and sorted according to their needs, either full sun, shade, etc. We are fortunate to have a Master Gardener and a Horticulturist available to identify plants as most arrive without that information. There are volunteers who do set up, pricing, haul plants for customers and cleanup. And, most important, the cashiers who keep track of the finances. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes and as many members as possible help in some way to make this event a success.

As an extra fundraiser this year, the Society is selling 10-inch pots of geraniums in shades of red, pink and white, just in time to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Again, all proceeds are used to keep Creemore’s Parks beautiful. Thank you all for supporting these endeavours.

Reinhart’s cider is made without artificial flavours, colours or sugar.

It was developed to tap into the growing cider market. According to the LCBO’s annual report, Ontario craft cider sales rose by 54 per cent.

However, the category does not have a cider that fits the light profile.

Reinhart Foods began as a cidery in 1910, producing apple cider, juice and apple butter from local apples.

Officials say they are excited to return to its roots with a delicious cider that comes from the hearts and hands of Stayner.

It is the first alcoholic beverage created by family-owned Reinhart Foods, which has been making a

variety of regular and fruit vinegars for more than six decades. It also produces other fruit products under a variety of labels.

“From production and development to manufacturing, the entire process was done from our team right here in Ontario,” said Singer. “We’re very proud of the products our staff makes at Reinhart’s and we’re excited to share this venture with them. We know our employees take the utmost care in making this cider because they are passionate about what they do and it beams with Stayner pride.”

Hummingbirds

by Kyle Regeling Ever wonder how to be perfectly satisfied with your garden?

The answer lies within the creation of a landscape that is a beautiful, vibrant space while also contributing functionally to the local ecosystem; A garden that serves two purposes.

Each gardener, from beginner to experienced, can easily accomplish this by adding a few plants to an existing garden or by starting a whole new project.

An effective way to develop a functional garden is by selecting

plants that provide food for birds and pollinators. In this case, let’s consider how to design a landscape for the zippy, little Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

Here in Ontario, the Rubythroat is the only breeding species native to our region. This tiny bird tips the scales at no more than six grams and can flap its wings more than fifty times a second. Amazingly, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird migrates from Central America and often will take a route flying over the Gulf of Mexico in one attempt. This courageous first leg takes the hummingbird 18-22 hours of non-stop flight to complete. Quite an ambitious little bird!

What they eat Hummingbirds’ primary food source is the sweet nectar from flowers, trees and shrubs. Although they consume large amounts of nectar they add protein to their diet by eating insects and spiders. Surprisingly, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is a flycatching aficionado and will even feast upon pesky mosquitos.

Providing food There are a handful of key points to think about when designing a space to naturally provide food for a hummingbird.

They are accustomed to feeding for generations from native flowering plants in Ontario making them a natural and ideal choice for species selection.

Other site amenities Hummingbirds do spend a great deal of time sitting upon perches especially after a feeding frenzy.

Consider situating shrubs or small trees nearby flower patches that provide a safe place to take a little rest.

Most birds love an opportunity to grab a drink and give their feathers a rinse and hummingbirds are no different.

Adding a bubbler or mister in the garden area will add appeal for many bird species including hummingbirds. Besides, who doesn’t want a better look at these feathered beauties, so give them a reason to hang around a little longer and add a few extra features.

Perennial selection In Ontario we have some excellent options of flowering perennials to pick from that hummingbirds enjoy.

For an early blooming species, wild columbine is a great addition to any garden. Since hummingbirds migrate south as early as August they only need flowers that bloom through the summer months. The magnificent cardinal flower is a red stunner that will keep hummingbirds busy, while the Joe Pye weed is a functional nectar source. A classic favourite for hummingbirds are species from the monarda family – both the bee balm and wild bergamot are beautiful fueling stations.

Creemore Farmersʼ Market The Creemore Farmers’ Market opens this

Saturday and although asparagus may be the only fresh produce in season, vendors will still have a lot to offer, including plants, fruits and veggies, hot meals, smoothies, baked goods, crafts, clothing, jewellery, woodworking, preserves, coffee, tea, honey, cheese, soap and treats for horses and dogs.

New market in Mulmur There will be a new farmers’ market this summer at Dufferin County Museum and Archives.

The market is an initiative of the Better In Mulmur committee, a grassroots marketing initiative, designed to create community within and awareness outside of the Township of Mulmur. They are the same group that developed the new Mulmur map, highlighting local attractions, including the market.

Mulmur Farmers’ Market will run on Sunday afternoons from May 21 to Oct. 8.

The market will have under 20 vendors this year with a focus on building farm-based businesses first.

Smith, Timothy Adam Nov. 17, 1956 - April 28, 2017 Tim died in hospital following a single vehicle accident. For the past four years he has battled cancer, successfully recovering from major surgery and radiation treatments but experienced severe problems with chemotherapy medications.

Predeceased by his father, Jack Smith; survived by his mother, Joyce Smith and siblings Bonnie Johnson (Charlie), Randy Smith (Cathy), Gloria Glockling (Neil), Peggy Smith (Tamie) and Penny Judson (Jeff).

The Smith family lived in New Lowell for over 40 years. Tim attended the Stayner Collegiate, played midget hockey in Creemore. He spent his adult years in Alberta, living in the Wetaskiwin area.

He worked in construction and eventually operated his own business as a pipeline welder. He especially enjoyed his time working in the Northwest Territories, Northern Alberta and British Columbia.

Tim will be fondly remembered and missed by family and friends. His cremated remains will be interred with his father’s in the cemetery at Sundridge, Ontario, near the Smith family summer cottage. A family memorial service will take place at that time.

Tea and Hen Party The Creemore Log Cabin and the Creemore Branch of the Clearview Public Library is hosting Queen Victoria’s Tea & Hen Party on Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tea and fresh scones will be served, and arts and crafts available.

Local chicken experts, Jennifer La Chapelle, Manfred Leimgardt and Betsy Wright, will be available to answer any chicken-raising questions people may have.
