Tupling Farms fire damage pegged at $3M-$4M by Trina Berlo Tanker after tanker from neighbouring municipalities kept a steady flow of water to the scene of an early morning fire Tuesday at Tupling Farms. The fire destroyed the main building at the family operated potato farm, located on the Mulmur Melancthon Townline near Honeywood. Andrew Tupling said he was notified of the fire by a neighbour who saw it burning from Honeywood and when he arrived on scene, the building was fully engulfed in flames. The building that was destroyed housed the business’ main office, processing facility, warehouse and many pieces of equipment, including several specialized pieces designed for the handling of potatoes, some imported from Germany. “In the short term it has brought us to a standstill,” said Tupling. “Everyone is handling it fine but we are extremely worried about the workload ahead.” He said they have about two months to figure out how to replace the (See “50” on page 3)

Welding sparks fire at Midwest Metals shop by Trina Berlo Clearview firefighters were called to extinguish a fire at a welding shop Monday. The fire started during a welding job at a shop owned by Midwest Metals, west of the main location. Deputy Fire Chief Roree Payment said the fire originated in a tractortrailer that had no wheels so they were fighting the fire inside the building and the wheels had to be put back on before they could remove it from the building. It was then moved to the main yard, where firefighters made sure the fire

was fully extinguished. Everyone got out safely and no one was injured, said owner Joan Gordon, when she was delivering hot coffee to firefighters. Of the four people working in the building at the time, said Payment, one was assessed on scene but did not require medical treatment. Crews monitored air quality, ventilated the building and removed the trailer of scrap from the building before clearing the scene just before 2 p.m. County Road 9 west of Creemore was closed for part of the morning.
