Remembrance Day services T h e C r e e m o r e L e g i o n ’s Remembrance Day service begins at the cenotaph on Caroline Street East beginning at 10 a.m. Military will march to the Legion, where service begins at 10:45 a.m. A reception will follow. New Lowell Legion’s Remembrance Day service begins with a parade from the fire hall to the cenotaph beginning at 10:30 a.m. A service takes place at the cenotaph at 11 a.m. Chili and hot chocolate will be served after the service. In Stayner, the parade will form up at town hall at 10:30 a.m. with the service to follow at the Cenotaph. The parade will then march down Hwy 26 to the Royal Canadian Legion 457 Branch. Remembrance Day Canadian Armoured Division, carefully shielded from sunlight. Cpl. Ed Rigney worked for the military newspaper from 1943 to 1946, throughout his years of service during

the Second World War. Upon enlisting, Rigney Sr. was transported by ship from Halifax to Naples, Italy. Rigney said the troops arrived to an air strike by the Germans who were attacking from above, in an attempt to sink the ships. (See “Rigney” on page 7)

A Remembrance Day service begins at 10:45 a.m. at the cenotaph in Singhampton with Rev. Ray Dobson of St. Paul’s Anglican Church officiating. The Mansfield Women’s Institute has organized a Remembrance Day Service at the Mansfield Cenotaph at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to the cenotaph, located just north of Mansfield. A reception will follow at Mansfield Presbyterian Church with guest speaker Richard Cauthers who will talk about his father and uncle, who were both veterans of the Second World War.

Clearview budget goes to public with 3.42% increase by Trina Berlo The public is invited to comment on the proposed 2017 Clearview Township budget at a Nov. 14 meeting at town hall in Stayner. Council and staff have put together a budget that reflects a 3.42 per cent increase in the municipal portion of taxes with an estimated overall increase of 1.73 per cent once policing costs,

county and education taxes are factored in. With a 1.73 per cent increase, the median average home assessed at $260,923 would see an increase of about $50 in their property taxes. The total 2017 proposed budget is $39.4 million which is composed of $26.1 million in the operating budget plus $13.3 million in the capital budget. Approximately 1.71 per cent of

the increase is due to: $109,000 for various economic development initiatives for Clearview including $50,000 for a proposed new façade improvement grant, $50,000 for a Clearview beautification fund; $70,125 to expand the Clearview transit from a half year funding to a full year funding; and $43,660 for increased spending on winter roads maintenance.

Council will take another look at the budget during a workshop on Nov. 28 before passing it in the spring. The Nov. 14 meeting will be held at the Clearview Administration Centre at 21 Gideon Street in Stayner.
