The Stayner Siskins welcomed the Scott family to the Oct. 6 home opener for the ceremonial puck drop in memory of their son, the late Troy Scott, a former APM Siskin player. Steve, Julie and Kristen were also presented with a Siskins jersey signed by all players. That night, the Siskins donned their new uniforms for the first time.
Siskins coach gets eight-game suspension at home opener by Alex Hargrave Stayner Siskins head coach Dave Steele lost his cool a week ago Thursday against Alliston Hornets. The red-hot coach got an eightgame suspension for his temper. The team lost 5-1. The game was a close match until the third period. Stayner only trailed 1-0 but Alliston filled the net with four third period goals to change the game’s mood. After many penalties were called, a melee broke out near the game’s end.
Steele became enraged and was given a one-game suspension for abuse of an official. This only made him hotter and he muttered some remarks, which cost him seven games. Lucas Jeffery scored Stayner’s only goal. On Sunday, with Siskins general manager Richard Gauthier behind the bench, Stayner beat Caledon 6-4. Caledon led 2-1 after two periods, only Sean Healy could beat the Golden Hawks goaltender Andrew
Ireland on a power play. The third period was a different story. Healy got his second goal, Austin Fischer added two, and Ben Skuce netted the winner with a little over three minutes remaining in the game. Caledon made the game interesting with a power play marker at 19:02; J.D. Falcon put the game out of reach with an empty netter. Stayner played Caledon again last night and are in Huntsville tonight. Midland comes to town Thursday.
by Trina Berlo A tribunal has found wind turbines to be located near two aerodromes threaten the health and safety of pilots and bats. In February, wpd Fairview Wind received approval from the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) to erect eight 500-foot wind turbines in Clearview Township. An appeal filed by John Wiggins, Gail and Kevin Elwood, Preserve Clearview, Clearview Township, the Town of Collingwood and the County of Simcoe triggering a tribunal which was held in Collingwood, beginning in May. Appeals were allowed on the grounds that the project would cause serious harm to human health and serious and irreversible harm to plant life, animal life and the natural environment. In an order delivered Oct. 7 by Dirk Vanderbent and Hugh Wilkins, the tribunal found that appellants and their expert witnesses were able to show that based on flight patterns for take-offs and landings, the wind turbines pose a threat to the safety of aircraft operators. “The safety concern expressed by Mr. Elwood, and the other appellants, relates to the proximity of all eight wind turbines to the take-off, transition and approach surfaces for the Clearview runway,” states the order. Wind turbines 1 and 3 through 8 are all in close proximity to the centre of the Clearview runway, all within 15 seconds of flight time to the centre line of the flight path. Given evidence presented at the hearing, that there is an unacceptable safety risk with respect to wind turbines 3 and 7, as planes taking off or landing at the Clearview runway would be flying in the turbulence zone at a (See “Tribunal” on page 3)
