Audition for a part in Tipling Stage Company’s first production of the 2016-2017 season, No Sex Please, We’re British, a 1971 farce by Anthony Marriott and Alistair Foot, which ran for 16 years in London’s West End. Try out for a part on Thursday, August 18 at 7 p.m. at Grace Tipling Hall in Shelburne.

Six men and four women will be cast and, those new to theatre, may be interested to know that there are some small parts ideal for anyone 20-plus wanting to gain some experience.

There are two principal parts for young men, one - originally played

by Michael Crawford, then David Jason (both of whom were young in the 1970s), which will appeal to 25- to 40-year-olds who love to show their stuff in comedic roles.

Other parts are for a young woman, a middle-aged woman, a middle-aged man and two male parts where age can range from 30-60.

Denis Stephenson will be directing.

Kidd family holds consignment auctions in Creemore

On this particular day there is jewellery, dishes, old games and a little of what seems like everything up for grabs.

Kidd Family Auctions has recently started holding regular consignment auctions in Creemore but they host all kinds of events in the area, from farm sales to estate auctions.

The process usually begins with a visit from Kidd who assesses the items and advises the owner of what could be sold at auction. Interesting and unusual is how he describes items that sell best.

While there is a continued interest in memorabilia such as toys and gas station collectibles he doesn’t always know what people are going to want because sometimes it depends on what is nostalgic for a specific buyer.

“If you take people who are 60-70 years old, the toys they played with when they were kids, that’s what they want now, like tin toys and stuff like that, or things that remind them of their childhood. Even china and glassware but specifically things they had when they grew up now they want that back for the memory,” said Kidd.

He said a full set of china is hard to sell but individual items, if people are nostalgic about it, could be popular.

China cabinets and dining room suites are harder to sell these days because people just don’t have formal dining rooms in their modern homes.

Kidd said he is still surprised by buying patterns and new trends.

Also on the team is Lyn Grose, who is not a family member but does administrative work and marketing in addition to a lot of other duties, said Kidd.

Kidd comes from a family of Melancthon farmers and as a young man he showed an interest in auctioneering after attending farm auctions with his father.

“Even before I could recall, my parents tell me that I used to come home from a sale and try to imitate the auctioneer,” said Kidd.

His parents encouraged him to pursue it as a career and in 1995 he graduated from the Southwestern

Ontario School of Auctioneering. For 21 years, in addition to farming, Kidd has been working auctions, gaining experience with other companies and then five years ago he partnered with another auctioneer to form Kidd and Kates Auctioneers and last year formed Kidd Family Auctions.

Wardens closer to bringing ultra-high speed broadband internet to rural areas Simcoe County residents are one step closer to receiving improved access to ultra-high speed broadband internet connectivity. County of Simcoe Warden Gerry Marshall attended a funding announcement in London, Ontario July 26 where the governments of Canada and Ontario jointly committed $180 million to support the development of the Southwestern Ontario Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) Network project. Canada and Ontario will each provide up to $90 million towards the total project cost of approximately $281 million. The County of Simcoe committed $2.5 million between 20152019.

The SWIFT project was created by the Western Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (WOWC), a not-for-profit organization representing 15 upper and single tier municipalities in Southwestern Ontario. Warden Gerry Marshall serves as Vice Chair of the WOWC and Chair of the SWIFT Initiative Sub-Committee.

“This is a major victory for all our residents and businesses currently underserviced or with limited access to high speed internet,” said Marshall.

“I applaud the federal and provincial governments for truly stepping up and supporting small-town, rural Ontarians.

SWIFT is a forward-looking solution that will help make our businesses more competitive and create greater equality in terms of access to reliable and affordable internet connectivity across the entire county.”

SWIFT understands that the market alone is not meeting the need for improved connectivity and growing bandwidth demands in Southwestern Ontario. The project will help communities and businesses in Simcoe County better compete in global markets, attract new jobs and improve quality of life. It will also allow individuals to use online resources to gain skills and experience. SWIFT will create an extensive fibre network that connects the entire region with service ranging from one Gbps up to 100 Gbps, using a combination of public and private funding. Here’s how it works: • SWIFT will build on existing fibre to create a far-reaching regional fibre network. The project will leverage government and broader public sector organization (i.e., schools and healthcare centres) to serve as anchor tenants of the network. This strategy will bring fibre closer to customers and will make it easier for independent service providers (ISPs) to connect homes and businesses to ultra-highspeed internet.

• SWIFT will direct funding – from municipal, provincial and federal governments – to address gaps in broadband infrastructure that are

leaving some communities behind.

The way we were

Cynical Spice “So tell me what you want, what you really, really want, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna really, really, really wanna zigazig ah.”

Thus states the Spice Girls song Wannabe, which is being used in a Global Goals for Sustainable Development campaign to send a message to the United Nations about what girls really want.

For some, it is that they never have to hear that song again. The song is 20 years old now and its choice as an empowering anthem for young women makes us say, zigazig huh?

The song is used in a widely broadcasted video that shows girls from around the world dancing and lipsinking to the song while attempting to draw attention to brief messaging about anti-violence, equal rights to pay and education and putting a stop to child marriage.

The Project Everyone video is in response to a 2015 promise by world leaders to put girls and women first when they pen Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, fix climate change and tackle inequalities, say its producers. “Girls and women are disproportionately affected by these challenges and are key to building resilient communities to withstand them. That’s why we need to ensure world leaders and the Secretary General of the United Nations listen to the voices of girls and women and put them first in policies and plans.”

With this part we couldn’t agree more but the Spice Girls are a girl band orchestrated by men in the recording industry and did more to diminish the value of women than to build equality.

For some people who remember the Spice Girls’ popularity in the 1990s, the song Wannabe makes you snap to attention. It’s a pop culture flashback that makes you ask, where am I, and what’s happening?

Still, the Spice Girls are the best selling group of all time and beloved by Millennials who grew up listening to them, especially girls. It must be acknowledged that Spice Girls are associated with a form of feminism in that women decide for themselves what it is to be feminist. The Wannabe lyrics are lacking in any substantive meaning but they do go on to say, “If you want my future, forget my past. If you wanna get with me, better make it fast.”

To have a bunch of sexualized young women and girls baring midriffs and dancing around to the song seems culturally insensitive and inappropriate.

Project Everyone urges people to post photos of themselves holding signs with a goal that they would really, really want to see happen using #WhatIReallyReallyWant as a message to world leaders. We would think whatever their message, they would want to be taken seriously.

Take care when there is a heat warning When temperatures stay above 31°C for more than a day, or the humidity index exceeds 40°C, over exertion will increase the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration or heat stroke. During the heat, you should be taking care to avoid overheating: Be sure to drink plenty of fluids (non-caffeinated). Don’t wait until you feel thirsty – that’s a sign that your body is already becoming dehydrated; Stay cool indoors and if possible, seek out an air-conditioned place; If you must be outside, stay in the shade and make sure you wear and reapply sunscreen, a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses and wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing; Electric fans provide comfort by

increasing evaporation, however when the conditions are extreme, fans will not prevent heat-related illness; Keep physical activity to a minimum; Draw blinds/ curtains to prevent radiant heat from entering homes.

Infants and young children, the frail elderly and people with chronic lung conditions or taking certain prescription drugs are more vulnerable to harm from overheating. Keep tabs on these people to make sure they’re staying safe.

Classics gather Saturday The annual Gathering of the Classics, dubbed the largest classic wings and wheels event in Canada, takes place at Edenvale Aerodrome on Saturday, August 6.

YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka is opening free to the public during an extreme heat alert which is expected to last into Friday.

In response to the extreme heat alert announced

by Environment Canada Thursday, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka’s Health, Fitness and Aquatic Centres will be open and free to the public as cooling centres for the duration of the alert.

“You need to take caution when you’re outside in weather like this,” said Karen Pulla, vice president of health, fitness and aquatics, YMCA of Simcoe/ Muskoka. “We hope the community will take advantage of the free service we’re providing our residents in order to stay cool and prevent any serious heat illnesses.”

Creemore Vertical challenge maxed out at 250 runners

by Trina Berlo About 250 runners will be on the move in Clearview and Mulmur this Saturday during the tenth annual Creemore Vertical Challenge.

Hosted by ultra marathon runners Lee Anne Cohen and Pierre Marcoux, the race draws people from as far away as the United States and Europe.

Races begin and end at their home between Creemore and Avening. The routes – 25, 50 and 75 km – take participants over roads and trails, sometimes on private property where permission has been granted.

The first runners will start out at 6 a.m. and all three races should start wrapping up around 2:30 p.m.

Cohen said people are always very supportive of the runners, often giving out water or popsicles along the route.

She wants people to know that there will be runners on the trail at the gulley at the top of Collingwood Street, which is often used by horseback riders and dirt bikers.

The non-profit event is run by more than 30 volunteers, including many local residents and neighbours of Cohen and Marcoux, and is affiliated with the Ontario Trail Series, Ontario Ultra Series, Canadian Ultra Trail Series, is a bronze level International Trail Ultramarathon and, new this year, the Canadian Skyrunning Federation, which means there is more vertical than in past years. The old course was approximately 850 meters vertical gain per 25 km loop. This year, it’s closer to 950 meters.

Handmade clay medals will be presented throughout the day and prizes include pottery made by Cohen, who make Mad Pots Pottery, and jugs of maple syrup produced by both Marcoux and Cohen, under the Mad About Maple Syrup label.

Participants are also rewarded with pizza, Creemore Springs beer and a dip in the Mad River after the race.

People are welcome to attend the awards ceremonies Saturday afternoon, August 6, at 7237 6-7 Sideroad Nottawasaga.

B&B participates in charity cycling event Mountain Ash Farm is taking part in Cycle and Stay South Georgian Bay Association of Bed and Breakfasts, offering a “Treat Stop” to as many as 200 cyclists August 12.

Mountain Ash Farm owner Patricia Cleary Clark said they will be providing water and granola cookies, as a rest stop on their way past us to pedal from Barrie into Creemore during the Tour for Kids Cycling Adventure, a fundraiser for childhood cancer camp organizations in Canada.

Donations go to Camp Ooch, Camp Trillium and Camp Quality. The camps rely on donations and do not receive government funding.

Mountain Ash Farm is accepting donation in honour of the spirit of Shane Sargant and his contribution to the community in organizing fun for kids and people of all ages of Clearview Township in this effort. Mansfield, New Lowell for NDBL junior title

by Scott Anderson The junior division championship series of the North Dufferin Baseball League started Aug. 2.

The Mansfield Cubs and the New Lowell Knights played the first game of the series Tuesday in Lisle with the Knights recording a 4-2 victory.

The first three innings remained scoreless until the fourth frame when the Knights scored two runs from Nathan Lennox and Mathew Wilkins.

They would add two more runs in the sixth when Owen Patterson and Evan Tuckett crossed the plate.

Mansfield managed two runs in their half of the fifth inning with Jake Currie and Jeff Christman crossing the plate.

The series will pause this week with Game 2 scheduled Aug. 8 in New Lowell, followed by game three in Mansfield on Aug. 10.

If a game four is needed it will be played Aug. 11 with a game five scheduled for Aug. 15.

The championship series is a best of five, or six points affair, with two points awarded for a win and one point each for a tie.

Both teams finished the regular season tied in points with 10 wins, seven losses, and one tie.

Mansfield took first place after winning four and tying one of the six games played between the two teams.

During first round action, New Lowell beat the Ivy Rangers taking games one and three 12-2 and 3-0. Game two ended in a 1-1 draw.
