Small-scale home solar has a bright future The future of small-scale renewable energy is likely to be less about feeding the grid and more about offsetting household energy use, says Jeff Williams of Gravity Sun Power.

The market is trending toward a program that encourages people to install small-scale renewable energy systems at their homes or farms and collect energy, which can be saved in the existing grid, instead of using expensive batteries for storage.

“That is where the long term energy plan is heading and we’re almost there.

Within a couple of years the feed-in tariff program, that a lot of people know about, will probably come to an end,” said Williams. “It all depends on what the program is doing. There’s more and more people getting involved in net metering.”

Net metering allows people to use their own energy to offset their hydro bill and it can be stored in the grid and then used in the months with fewer daylight hours.

“In the summertime when there are a lot of sun hours, you store credit that is put toward bills in the wintertime.”

The amount of hydro that is offset by the solar panels depends on how big the system is.

Williams said it could cost only a few thousand dollars for a two- to four-kilowatt system on a household roof and depending on daily usage it

He said he has seen an uptake in people’s interest in solar even though it is not a cheaper source. He finds people are getting into it because of a desire to be greener and more self-sufficient. It’s not cheaper but it is an alternative for people who want to get out from under

the hydro companies.

“We will eventually reach so-called grid parody”, says Williams, “when the cost of renewable energy will be equal to using a hydro company. Over the years, as the subsidy is reduced, the cost of installing the panels comes down and hydro is always going to be going up.”

Opening the grid as a public storage space has helped to increase interest.

“It is still too expensive to use batteries to store the energy and that is the weak link in the whole chain. The grid is an unlimited battery bank that you don’t have to pay for so that’s why net metering works.”

The panels are warrantied for 25 years but the lifespan should be 35-50 years and the equipment is improving all the time, says Williams.

“There will probably come a time in the not-too-distant future where every

new home would have a few panels on the roof,” he said.

Other provinces are starting to come on board and Williams said he wouldn’t be surprised if a national building standard for solar is implemented in the future.

“There’s no way we can keep going forward with what everyone requires for energy without finding it somewhere else because nobody wants coal and nobody wants nuclear and nobody wants wind and nobody wants the big solar farms but everybody wants heat and power and lights and computers and TVs and phones and everything else so it has to come from somewhere,” said Williams.

Once you’re connected to the distribution system, your local distribution company will continue to read your meter just as they do now and then subtract the value of electricity you supply to the grid from the value of what you take from the grid. What you’ll see on your bill is the “net” difference between these two amounts. If you supply more power than what you take from the grid over the billing cycle, you’ll receive a credit toward future energy bills. The credit can be carried forward for up to 12 months. To qualify, you must generate electricity primarily for your own use; the electricity must be generated solely from a renewable resource (wind, water, solar energy or biomass) and the maximum capacity of the generation facility can’t be more than 500 kilowatts.

Opinion EDITORIAL Steel your vulnerable heart if getting into the vegetable bed

Vegetable gardeners know that this time of year brings much promise and hope. The snow melts away to reveal a new, fresh patch of earth, endless with promise. There isn’t much in terms of reward except the chives but one snip and we are swept away in the possibilities. Like in the early stages of a romantic relationship, we set to beautifying the beds, removing the leaves and mulch worn like a winter mask, exfoliate with rakes and moisturize with compost. Pacts are made, bargains are struck. There is resolve that this season will be different and it won’t end in heartbreak.

Grass stained knees, blistered hands and sore backs are a small price to pay for the yielding affection of the vegetable patch. The promise of peas eaten right off the vine before ever making it to the kitchen, fresh lettuce cut moments before going into the salad bowl.

A vow has been made.

But then there are frost warnings and worry, but it turns out to be for not because the squirrels dig up the dried peas before they have a chance to germinate and the earwigs are already en route to the lettuce patch even though the seeds are still in the package dubiously waiting until is safe. It’s never safe.

It’s the same story every year. Try different ways of growing cucumbers but nothing happens until the family packs off on a brief mid summer vacation and comes home to bloated rusty coloured things that look like they may have been cucumbers for a moment or two. And peppers? Still too painful to talk about.

Zucchini is the rebound vegetable. It is cool under the shade of its broad leaves and beautiful flowers. It cooperates for the most part and is easy to be around for a time. Then all of its time-sensitive produce is ready at once not caring that its 30C and the last place you want to be is in the kitchen making relish. Like being stuck in an argument that is going nowhere, you go 12 rounds, washing jars until your hands are raw.

A sweet Valentine’s from the garden, the tomatoes keep up the romance. There is nothing better than a vine ripened tomato, still warm from the sun. Like a mistress’ afternoon visit, you know the hornworm is lurking beneath the leaves but it is easier to deny her existence than to follow a neighbour’s advice: pop their heads off.

The garden takes more than it gives and by September the weeds have taken over completely and thoughts turn to next year when, things will be better.

In this special edition of The Creemore Echo we are celebrating a less cynical view of life at home and in the garden.

Sara and Georgi will be at the Farmers’ Market this Saturday as The Echo kicks off its subscription drive.

Echo staff will be at the market Saturdays until June 11. Like last year, we have three options; a subscriber ($49), a booster ($75) and a champion ($100 or more).

Undertaking nothing short of astounding Editor: Having lived in this wonderful village over 20 years and volunteered for numerous programs, events and organizations, I feel more than qualified to address this.

The Creemore Vintage Festival on this past weekend was a huge undertaking for any group, business or committee.

The fact that it was single-handedly created and put on by one person, Sandra Green of Clearview Community Radio, is nothing short of astounding!

Most events in town tend to be of direct benefit to their creator; market events bring more people to the farmers’ market, The Creemore Children’s Festival draws more tourists to the toy store, and Copper Kettle, well of course, that’s a no-brainer.

All are successful at also bringing visitors to town

who may otherwise not have heard of us, as difficult as that is to imagine, and one would hope that dollars would also be spent at other businesses as well.

But Sandra had no hidden agenda, no profits to be gained by all her efforts, no extra publicity that would improve her own business. This was probably the most sincere unselfish act I’ve seen in many years.

I, for one, am extremely impressed with her accomplishment.

Oh, and about that rain; no outdoor event coordinator in this country hasn’t experienced that catastrophe!

Hopefully, everyone, vendors and visitors alike, will return next year, if Sandra is willing to try again, and Mother Nature will deliver her a beautiful sunny day.

Congratulations, Sandra, for a job well done.

Kudos for braving the wind, rain Editor: We wanted to send kudos and high fives to Sandra Green of Clearview Community Radio, other organizers of the Creemore Vintage Festival and most especially the vendors who braved the wind and rain, the shops, restaurants and one particular brewery who, despite of weather, embraced the spirit of the day and carried on regardless. It was just another example of folks in Creemore coming together and making the day the best it could

be, and as a result leaving many great impressions on those who visited, some for the first time. Lemony Farfowlade Reduce heat to medium-low, add minced shallot and garlic to fry pan and sauté gently until cooked but not browned.

Turn heat up to medium and add chicken broth, stirring and scraping constantly to de-glaze the pan.

Add Dijon mustard, white pepper and lemon juice, and continue to stir until sauce starts to bubble.

When these ingredients are thoroughly mixed, add 35 per cent cream to the sauce mixture and stir. Let sauce cook uncovered for approximately 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. As sauce starts to thicken slightly, reduce heat to medium low, add capers and sweet gherkin pickles and stir. Simmer for a further 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the farfalle pasta to the boiling salted water and cook, stirring occasionally until it is tender but still firm (al dente) about 12 minutes.

Drain, and reserve ¼ cup of the pasta water. Place the cooked farfalle pasta in a large wide pasta bowl. If the pasta sticks together add some of the reserved pasta water to coat. You can also use pasta water to thin out the sauce if it looks too thick.

Place a layer of chicken pieces on top of the farfalle and then add a layer of green vegetables on top of that. Pour lemony rémoulade sauce over top and garnish with lemon zest.

Serve immediately.

Serves 6.

1 tablespoon (15 ml) canola oil 1 tablespoon (15 ml) butter 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into bite size pieces 1 large shallot, minced 3 large garlic cloves, minced 1 ½ cups (375 ml) chicken stock ¼ cup (60 ml) prepared Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon (5 ml) ground white pepper ½ cup (120 ml) fresh squeezed lemon juice, approximately 2 to 3 lemons ¾ cup (180 ml) 35% cream 2 rounded tablespoons (30 ml) drained capers 8 sweet gherkin pickles, diced to same size as capers 1 pound box (500 g) farfalle pasta (bowties) ¼ cup (60 ml) pasta water 1-2 cups cup cooked green vegetables (grilled asparagus, sautéed wild leeks, etc.)

1 tablespoon lemon zest, finely chopped Start to preheat your pasta water by bringing a large pot of salted water to a boil. In a large non-stick fry pan, heat half the canola oil and half the butter together. Over medium high heat, sauté half the chicken pieces until browned and cooked through. Remove from pan and keep warm. Repeat process with remaining chicken pieces, canola oil and butter.

He has spent years crafting the elements of the family’s second floor home, located above his pottery studio, Mad River Pottery.

A hands-on kinda guy, Vorstermans says he is compelled to make things.

He is the type of person who knows what he wants but inevitably comes to the conclusion that he is better off making it himself.

“I muck around a lot,” he says, claiming that his skill is often stretched to match his ambition. It’s a matter of perspective apparently because Vorstermans says the glass and woodwork are relatively “easy” compared to pottery, which takes years to master.

The windows, cupboards, floor; he made them. The light fixtures, the shower; he made them too, even the bathroom sink.

The kitchen cupboards, made of inlaid wood of various types and colours, depict pastoral scenes next to complementary cupboard doors made of stained glass. The detail is incredible, carried throughout, even inside of the cupboards. kitchen counter is made of concrete and copper, with a backsplash constructed of handmade tiles.

He says some of the work is artistic and practical, for example, the stained glass windows provide privacy where needed but still let in the light. In the bathroom, smooth pebbles, which appear to flow out of the shower stall, are used for the floor, to add grip.

A clawfoot tub is encased in wood with a concrete top and stained glass above. The wooden surround has the 3D effect of windows opening onto a hilly landscape. Another concrete countertop surrounds a hammered copper sink, stained glass below a geometric stained glass vanity mirror.

In another bathroom, details of small spiders and snails have been fired onto the handmade tiles, indicative of Vorstermans’ attention to detail.

The building, at the south end of Mill Street, was once a hotel operating under the names of Trew’s Hotel and Maxwell House. It was converted into a creamery in 1920 then purchased by

the Gowan family in the 1960s who continued with the business.

The building sat vacant for a few years until the Vorstermans purchased the building in 1979. In 1991, they had the back section of the old hotel rebuilt and Paul has been working away at it ever since, “sometimes taking time to make pottery.”

From Plot to Pot Creemore Farmers’ Market stalwarts Orie and Judy Johnston are not ones to shy away from a hard day’s work.

In the summer months they tend thousands of plants in their four-acre vegetable garden planted on Orie’s homestead in Mulmur; 700 tomato plants, 500 cucumbers, 3,000 garlic, zucchini, Spanish onions, even celery, and lettuce faithfully guarded by Nico, the mouser. Every week, during market season, they come to Creemore with a loaded truck. If there is anything left at the end of the day, that’s if, Judy is making plans to pickle. Sugar and vinegar regularly top her list as she heads to the local grocery store.

She says she has gone many nights on only a couple of hours' sleep when produce is at its peak.

“Orie will go to sleep to the smell of one kind of pickle and wake up to another,” says Judy.

From July until September Judy works in the kitchen making zucchini relish, crispy bread and butter pickles, chili sauce with wild apples and corn relish, made almost exclusively from their own produce; 300 jars of preserves is the average, 604 is her record.

Their interest in gardening started when Orie was having trouble sourcing potatoes that were grown without chemical fertilizer or pesticides.

Having both grown up on farms, it wasn’t much of a stretch. Judy was raised on a farm near Stratford, where her father still lives and continues to farm.

They met when they each answered an ad in Western Ontario Farmer , published by Ashgrove Christian Singles. The organization, an early version of Christian Mingle, matched them up and they became pen pals.

Judy said she described herself as being tall, strong and a person who loved animals and Orie thought that sounded just perfect. They got married in 1987 and have been working the land together ever since. They are

very content and can get through anything as long as they are together, says Judy. Until recently Orie went to work every day as a carpenter and Judy spent many days carting watering cans up and down the 250-foot rows of vegetables, watering each one by hand because “a hose will damage the plants”.

Orie has since put in an irrigation system, which is part of his system of planting in plastic to keep the moisture and heat in. They start the plants early in hoophouses, giving them produce three weeks earlier than normal, says Orie.

Twenty years ago, Orie was already driving around the hills of Mulmur with a tailgate retail operation, selling to neighbours and weekenders. When he heard rumbling of a farmers’ market starting up in Creemore, he began to ask around and ended up talking to organizers Sandra Lackie and Jean Brownfield. He is considered a founding member of the market, that was first located in the Gordon feedlot 19 years ago and has grown into a local attraction and community gathering place.

Primary Producers There are more than 30 vendors at this year’s market selling everything from fruit, veggies and meat to soap and tea.

A dozen or so, including the Johnstons, are primary producers, meaning they grow or raise the food.

Among them, and new to the market this year, is Tim and Kimberly Schneider of Dunridge Farm. They will be bringing their award winning apple cider and spring garlic.

“We’re excited to be part of the market,” says Kimberly. “It is really one of the premiere markets in the area.”

Located just outside of Duntroon, Dunridge Farm is a 150-acre organic farm that also grows non-GMO sweet corn, which will be coming to the

market later in the season, and black turtle beans, which are sold to Chipotle restaurants in the United States. They grow eight varieties of apples, including the popular heritage snows.

The different varieties are blended to make a sweet cider, which took third place at the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Convention in February. Next year, they plan to sell cider vinegar as well.

The expanding garlic patch is home to the Hawkwind variety of spring garlic. The scapes will be coming up soon, which Kimberly turns into dips and pesto. She also makes garlic powder, which will be available at the market, along with the raw garlic.

Tim says, the farm is a family operation, with their three daughters in charge of the braiding division.

“It is very difficult to make a living from a 100- to 150-acre farm,” says Tim. “You need a diverse organic crop to make it feasible.”

He says they have a commitment to making organic food more accessible.

“We’re trying to get to a scale to make it affordable for everyone,” says Tim. The Schneiders are in the process of resurrecting an 1830s heritage barn on the farm which will house a farm-gate

store and will also be home to a new hard cider made under the Duntroon Cider House label. The apples have just been pressed and the cider will be available in July, but that’s another story. Unfortunately the hard cider will not be sold at the farmers’ market.

The Creemore Farmers’ Market runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. (new start time this year) until 1 p.m. until Thanksgiving weekend at Station on the Green.

Top grade ingredients A surge of warmth cuts the cool air the moment the door opens. It is the heat from an oven that has been on all day, pots rotating through six burners and people busily working around a large, crowded kitchen.

Students from George Brown College have taken over every inch of the main floor of Mad Maple Country Inn working on various parts of the lunch menu and tension rises as the deadline approaches. About 70 graduate culinary students have been invited to the country by Mad Maple owners Miriam Streiman and her husband Neil Epstein for the college's 4th annual Italian Program, under the

tutelage of Dario Tomaselli, chef of 36 years who runs the Italian program.

There are cook stations outside as well; a barbecue and a fire pit. It is the last day of winter and it is still cold but these students are energized by their new surroundings They are tasked with making a menu out of ingredients sourced by local producers and work in teams, rotating through stations to execute the meal. More than that, they let the ingredients inspire the menu and they need to think on their feet, work with what they have and think outside the box, says Streiman. Last year, the students made ice cream in the snow,

Streiman is a graduate of this program and is now part of a movement that promotes the region through its food, along with other chefs like

Andrea Greyerbiehl from Azzurra in Collingwood. Chefs from several Toronto hotspots, are also on hand to help support the students.

“There are all of these pockets of connections and relationships happening that really showcase our area as a region producing really high quality beautiful food for chefs in the city to use as well as for the students who are the next generation of chefs,” says Streiman.

They also learn about foraging local ingredients and although cedar is being used to season the wild whitefish from Akiwenzie Fish at Cape Croker, there is not much to forage as of yet.

Nevertheless, the students take turns trekking off into the woods.

After the planning and the preparation, everyone involved shares the meal. The students, chefs and producers all delight in good food with new friends.

Clean the garden early to avoid stepping on noses of the plants.

Pruning also keeps the plants from looking unsightly and taking up more real estate than was intended.

Some plants keep their leaves all winter, but still need to be cleaned up.

For example, Epimediums, Hellebores, Heucheras, Bergenias and bearded iris.

If you cut off all the old foliage from Epimediums in early spring, you will be rewarded with the most beautiful stems of nodding flowers.

New leaves are formed on these stems. You will still get flowers even if you don’t cut them back, but the show won’t be as spectacular.

Hellebores bloom so early, under the snow even, that you won’t even know

they are there.

But luckily, they have a long bloom period, almost until the end of May so there is plenty of time to enjoy them.

Last year’s leaves are now flat on the ground and should be removed.

The foliage on Hellebores is reason enough to have them in your garden.

With any luck, there will be little baby Hellebores under all those old leaves waiting to be potted up.

If you left your ornamental grasses up all winter, a good thing by the way, you can cut them right down to ground level.

To prune or not to prune? are slower than others, so be patient.

For blooming shrubs, do not prune until they have finished blooming otherwise there will be no blooms this year.

Annabelle Hydrangeas need a good pruning in the spring if you want a more upright plant.

Cut down the woody stems in spring, either down to almost ground level or at various heights, and your plant will be sturdier and the blooms not quite as droopy when it blooms later in the summer.

Other hydrangeas have different pruning times, so if in doubt, do not prune until you do some further research.

Exchanging Gifts A tulip blooming ceremony held special importance for Clearview Mayor Chris Vanderkruys. He baked up a huge batch of oliebollen – essentially mini Dutchie doughnuts – for the entire crowd gathered at Fountain Park to celebrate a long lasting friendship between Canada and the Netherlands. Vanderkruys, decked out in an orange shirt and wooden shoes, is the son of a Dutch immigrant.

The township hosted a street party May 13 to celebrate the blooming of the tulip bulbs acquired last fall through a program to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Holland at the end of the Second World War. Both Clearview Township and Stayner Collegiate Institute were successful in applying for a portion of 100,000 tulip bulbs donated by Prince Edward Island based Veseys and distributed through the Canadian Garden Council.

SCI held a ceremony in October when local and school board dignitaries helped students plant the bulbs in the front garden at the school. The bulbs in the township garden were planted by the Stayner Garden Club, who joined in the celebration, along with MPP Jim Wilson, members of council, members of the Legions in Clearview, representatives from Base Borden, SCI staff and students and the public.

To mark the occasion, SCI Grade 11 and 12 art students also painted wooden shoes that will be sent to various local agencies, including the libraries, town hall, the Legions and the Canadian embassy in Holland and the Dutch embassy in Ottawa.

SCI also collaborated with Grade 6-8 students at Byng Public School and Clearview Meadows Elementary School for a community clean-up, as a token of friendship to their neighbours.

Friendship forged In 1945 the Dutch royal family sent 100,000 tulips to Ottawa to thank Canadians for harbouring Princess Juliana and her daughters during the war. Juliana gave birth to Princess Margriet at the hospital in Ottawa in 1943 and in 1946 sent another 20,500 bulbs with a pledge to send another 10,000 each year during her lifetime. The Canadian Tulip Festival is held in Ottawa each May in celebration of these gifts.

The awards recognize the accomplishments of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans (LGBT) individuals, allies, community organizations and LGBT-inclusive businesses.

FSP recognizes the work of individuals, organizations and businesses that strive to celebrate diversity and promote an inclusive community.

The Awards will honour a LGBT resident, a municipality, a LGBT youth, a community organization, a local business, and a LGBT activist/ leader for their contributions that make our County a better place to live, work and grow.

Categories for the 2016 Simcoe County LGBT Community Awards include: Youth of the Year, Person of the Year, Positive Community Organization, Positive Business, Tribute Award for Positive Community and Honourary Award for Activism and Leadership Nominations for the Simcoe County LGBT Community Awards will close Wednesday, June 1 and are submitted by the public using online forms hosted on the FSP website. Nominees will be announced Wednesday, June 22 and recipients in the five categories will be announced at the Awards Gala.

Each submission will be reviewed by the awards committee. Award recipients are selected by a jury, under the supervision of the co-chairs of the awards committee.

The Jury is assembled from members of the board of directors and five members of the public.
