Police investigate arson at abandoned house by Trina Berlo Police are investigating a fire at an abandoned house in Creemore, with arson being the suspected cause. Clearview Township firefighters from all five stations were called to the fire on Edward Street East, just before 6 p.m. on April 9. The house was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Fire Chief Colin Shewell said the house had no power or utilities, and evidence found outside of the house led firefighters to believe the fire was intentionally set. “The scene was held by OPP because of evidence found outside and we were concerned if there was anybody or anything of interest inside,” said Shewell. “We couldn’t make entrance because it was unstable.” It took a team of 35 firefighters about four hours to clear the scene. The fire marshal was called but they declined to investigate so Shewell said he and a team of firefighters from Station 4 investigated the following day, dismantling the building with the help of an excavator. He said no human remains were found inside and any evidence collected was handed over to the police.
Because it was a defensive attack, Shewell said fire crews got water from a fire hydrant near the school instead of
running a water shuttle from a weaker hydrant on Edward Street in an effort not to disrupt water distribution to homes
in the area. He said taking water from the weaker hydrant could affect water pressure and flows.
by Trina Berlo Mulmur Township is in the running for the Air Miles Detour contest. Mulmur is competing against Moose Jaw in Sakatchewan, Morin-Heights in Quebec, Port Hawkesbury in Nova Scotia and Nelson, British Columbia for a chance to host a concert with Meghan Trainor, the singer of the pop hit All About That Bass. The small towns were chosen for their musical culture and heritage. A mini documentary about Mulmur features guitar builder Daniel Clark, Terra Nova Public House owner Anna Alonso and musician Bruce Ley also appear in the film, talking about the current music scene. Residents Wayne Townsend and Bill Hill, along with Sarah Robinson
of the Dufferin County Museum, also appear in the video, talking about Rock Hill Park, a concert venue that hosted famous musicians, including Willie Nelson, Charlie Pride and Stompin’ Tom Connors, drawing thousands of fans from the mid 1960s to the 80s. “To be selected as one of five communities across the country, it was really humbling actually, that we were even thought about,” said Mulmur Township Mayor Paul Mills, who has a cameo appearance in the film, along with his wife Linda. “As we got into it more, with the music history here in Mulmur we thought we were a real good candidate for this. We are pleased to be part of this promotion and it’s certainly going to put Mulmur on the map, that’s for sure.”
People who collect Air Miles are encouraged to visit the national contest website and register as a Mulmur supporter. Every mile collected at participating retailers is equal to one vote for the town of their choice. The contest launched nationally on April 12 and there is a community pep rally at the Dufferin County Museum this Saturday, April 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Devin Cuddy will be performing at the event, emceed by Jeremy Taggart. The Mulmur video will be screened and there will be a free barbecue, prizes and games. To register for the contest, visit detour.airmiles.ca. The contest runs until May 31. The winning town will be announced in June and the concert will take place in August.
