Suspicious fire under police investigation by Trina Berlo An early morning house fire on County Road 9 near Creemore Friday has been deemed suspicious. Police have been called in following an investigation by the fire marshal’s office. Clearview firefighters were called to the scene at of the fire, just east of Riverside Drive, at 4:30 a.m. Deputy Fire Chief Roree Payment said he arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the second floor of the home. Fire Chief Colin Shewell said the owner reported no one was home at the time of the blaze. Because the total damage was estimated at about $500,000, between
the structure and contents, the fire marshal’s office was called to investigate. As a result of the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal investigation, the Huronia West Crime Unit was advised and is now investigating this fire, said police. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Huronia West OPP at 705-429-3575 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (1-800222-8477). Tips can also be submitted online at www.crimestopperssdm.com. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display. Callers remain anonymous and will not be asked to testify in court. Information may lead to a cash reward of up to $2,000.

Gowan recognized for 'quiet evangelism' by Trina Berlo Many people in the village have been on the receiving end of Gertie Gowan’s unfailing support and encouragement. She is known in Creemore and area for sending letters and cards marking loss and celebrations and also for showing up with her famous banana muffins. Gowan was among 33 to be appointed to the 2015 Order of the Diocese of Toronto. The medallions were handed out at the Archbishop’s Levee at St. James Cathedral, Toronto, on Jan. 1. Gowan was unable to attend the ceremony, choosing to honour a commitment to get together with family on New Year’s Day for a skate and potluck. She said she felt it was particularly important to uphold the tradition this year, having just lost a son, and wanting to be with her family. So Bishop Peter Fenty made a special trip to Creemore Sunday to present Gowan with her award, at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, in the presence of family and friends. “Mrs. Gowan has shown quiet

and sending cards on all occasions to many of the people in her village – an example of true discipleship,” said officials with the Diocese of Toronto. The Order of the Diocese of Toronto
recognizes and honours members of the laity in the Diocese who have given outstanding service over a significant period of time in their volunteer ministry.
