Jason Collett with Zeus at Avening Hall Avening Hall has announced Jason Collett, backed by Zeus, will perform March 5, the first tour date in promotion of the new album Song and Dance Man, released today.

A fire destroyed a log home near Singhampton last Friday. The cause is believed to be electrical in nature.

Fire destroys Singhampton home

by Trina Berlo Clearview Township Fire Chief Colin Shewell says the fire that destroyed a Singhampton house last Friday started in the basement and was electrical in nature.

Passersby noticed smoke coming from the house on County Road 124, just east of Singhampton, shortly

before 1:30 p.m.

No one was home at the time and no one was injured but one cat was unaccounted for. The homeowners arrived on scene while the home was fully engulfed.

Shewell said when crews arrived, flames were coming out through the windows. Firefighters tried to get into

the house but the fire was too advanced.

He said firefighters did a great job containing the flames to the building and also kept hoses on a neighbouring vinyl clad house to avoid heat damage.

Shewell estimated the damage at more than $250,000 and said there is nothing to indicate the fire is suspicious in any way.

An additional professional activity (PA) day has been added to this year's Simcoe County District School Board calendar for both elementary and secondary schools.

The PA day will be on Friday, April 15. The additional PA day is part of the settlements that were centrally negotiated with the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario and the Ontario Secondary Schools Teachers’ Federation.

Illegal passenger While conducting a RIDE check at County Road 10 and Highway 26 on Feb. 1, police stopped a vehicle and discovered marijuana plants in the backseat.

Charged with producing a schedule one substance is 50-year-old Giuseppe Diblasi.

He is scheduled to appear in Collingwood court on March 22.

Blue Mountain Village Association director of marketing and events Patti Kendall said apples and local food are the foundation of the tourism experience, building it out with the local heritage, culture, art and outdoor adventures.

She said it started in the Beaver Valley in 2008 and from there, partners started to develop complementary products.

It’s an opportunity to promote local food and an authentic unique product, said Kendall.

“It has become a very important tourism product for Ontario Tourism when they are out selling internationally.

It’s not enough to have a wonderful world-class resort but they also need to be able to provide more information to international travellers,” she said. “This is a great way to move people through and experience all of the unique areas throughout our region and linking them together but with a local food component to it. That is the foundation of it, is local food and apples.”

Having worked for the company that developed Blue Mountain Village, Giffen, now the general manager of Glen Huron Apples, saw the importance that area visitors discover what Clearview has to offer.

“The Blue Mountain area is like a base camp for families. After a few days they want to get out and explore the area,” said Giffen. “There are so many things to do. We really are a fourseason destination.”

Once visitors come to Clearview they can discover the farmers’ markets, hiking trails, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, arts and crafts.

“The majority of the visitors to Blue Mountain are from the GTA and what we have isn’t available in their own

backyards,” said Giffen.

He said there will be a benefit to all small business owners in the township.

For every partner, who pays a fee of their own, the Township of Clearview pays a fee of $500.

T h e m u n i c i p a l i t y ’s c u l t u r e , recreation and tourism coordinator, Shane Sargant said with three business partners and farmers’ markets in Stayner and Creemore, the township would pay $2,500.

“The Apple Pie Trail will lure people into Creemore,” said Sargant. “Our job is to bring people to the main attraction and then other attractions, it’s their job to bring them into their business or store.”

He said the township and Apple Pie Trail partners will work to promote the township as a whole.

Sargant said this is one of the township’s first forays into tourism promotion. Tourism was added to his portfolio last year and last month Sargant held a second tourism summit where the Apple Pie Trail partnership was announced. Sargant said the township also increased its involvement in the Georgian Triangle Tourism Association (GTTA) at a fee of $15,000, to become a partner.

There will be opportunities to promote certain apple related events through the Apple Pie Trail but the details of how are still being worked out.

“Creemore is such a lovely place and we have always wanted to include it but we knew we wouldn’t be able to manage it from this distance so having an ambassador there gives us that opportunity,” said Kendall of John Giffen.

“It is full, we hadn’t really planned to expand. It’s a large project to manage and we want to make sure that we’re providing the best possible tourism and local food experience.”

As part of an ongoing redevelopment project, Collingwood General and Marine Hospital will be at Clearview council Monday with an update.

The hospital is in need of more space to meet increasing demands for service and a growing and aging population.

The Town of Wasaga Beach, at its Jan. 26 council meeting, passed a motion approving the donation of a 25-acre fully serviced $4.5 million parcel of land located in the west end of town for a new regional hospital.

About half of the property forms part of the town’s business park and the other half is owned by developers, Zancor Homes.

“Having a hospital centrally located to the region it serves, with excellent highway access, will be beneficial to the entire area,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “The Town of Wasaga Beach supports an objective, transparent, and merit based site selection process, and is happy to submit this site for consideration.”

The way we were

Mild winter bad for business “Let’s all take a moment to thank a Texas Low,” writes the CBC Wednesday.

Let’s not.

It is the reason for a new record set for breaking a record temperature in Toronto.

An El Nino pattern is already responsible for an unseasonably warm winter and then we get the double whammy with the low-pressure system from Texas.

Although the damage is done, it seems unCanadianlike not to complain about the weather, whatever it may be doing.

One thing is for sure.

This weather is not good for business.

No matter how much we complain about winter, we rely on it to stimulate the local economy.

Of course, it’s nice not having to spend 10 minutes in the morning clearing off the car but it comes at a price.

The endless streams of headlights heading up Airport Road on a Friday have dimmed and the buzz of snowmobiles whipping by on local trails is hushed.

It is sad to see cross-country ski trails and downhill runs closed this week, close to home and throughout the province.

The affect is even deeper when you consider that those in the snow removal business are without tasks and the people selling firewood and heating fuel are making fewer deliveries.

Sure, it’s great for the household’s bank account in one way but bad in others when considering all the ramifications. Some of the impacts are very noticeable and others are more subtle. With fewer skiers and snowmobilers in the area, restaurants in the region will be taking a hit, along with accommodation providers and all of the spin-off services that are too numerous to mention.

We have been told that even on days when there isn’t any snow in the GTA but we have great winter sport conditions, people don’t think to come north.

They need to have some semblance of winter before they feel an impulse to hit the slopes.

With spring-like conditions in the city, people may not be seeking out man-made snow at Blue Mountain, and that is a shame.

These past two years we have had two very cold and snowy winters and everything was right in the world. The experts said it was good for water levels and slowing invasive insects. A cold and snowy winter restores ecological balance.

This is all part of a troubling global warming trend.

According to new Berkeley Earth analysis, “2015 was unambiguously the hottest year on record. For the first time in recorded history, the Earth’s temperature is clearly more than 1.8 F above the 1850-1900 average. 2015 was about 0.2 degrees F hotter than 2014, which had tied with 2005 and 2010 as the previous hottest years.”

With no hope for a proper winter we can only hope we get some snow in the near future but the short term forecast isn’t promising.

Fingers crossed and snow boots at the ready.

No engine brake signs needed in Singhampton Editor: I am writing with regards to what is becoming more and more of a concern to the residents of Singhampton.

Singhampton is a somewhat unique community in that it is half in Grey County, and half in Simcoe County. Municipality wise, Grey Highlands and Clearview. Contacting governments around here can be a challenge, as you can never be sure who looks after what for whom?

My issue that continues to be a growing concern is engine brake usage in our small town, and how the local government of Grey County (which I have found out looks after Grey Rd 31/Simcoe Road 95 from the northern quarries into Singhampton) and Grey/Simcoe Road 124 from Shelburne in Singhampton appears not to care about the residents of Singhampton.

I have approached Grey County council and transportation department in an effort to get signs installed to attempt to have engine brake usage reduced in the residential town of Singhampton.

Signs that continue to be in pretty much every other county/town/municipality in Ontario. These signs are merely a suggestion to drivers to respect that they are approaching a residential area, and asking them not to use engine brakes so as to disturb the residents. I am well aware that they are not enforceable unless there was a local bylaw passed.

Grey County has indicated (unlike any other county in Ontario) that they will not install any new signs due to insurance issues! Insurances issues? How can there be insurance issues for something that is not even required by law in Ontario to be on a truck.

Engine brakes are merely to assist a truck in slowing down while going down hills, and are not intended to actually stop a truck! That’s where working air brakes come into play. I have confirmed this with the Ministry of Transportation offices in Barrie.

I have chatted with many Singhampton residents, and the truck engine brake noise appears to be a number one concern for everyone I talk to.

Singhampton is not built on an uphill or downhill. In the grand scheme of things that town is very flat, and therefore has no real need for any sort of engine brake usage. I have also presented Grey County council with a petition signed by many residents of the town asking for engine brake signs to be installed (May 2015).

So, after all of this, it appears as though Grey County does not care about the residents of Singhampton, and has no interest in listening to its residents concerns, and following up to assist with the issues. I would implore all residents of Singhampton to contact council and express your concern over Grey County’s lack of caring for our community.

Communities gathered 'round to hear Farm Radio Forum

by Helen Blackburn When I was a schoolgirl in the 1940s and 50s I made sure my homework was done by 8:30 on Monday evenings.

That’s when our radio dial was turned to the CBC and our family listened to Farm Radio Forum for a half hour.

Meanwhile all across Canada hundreds of small groups of neighbours in the rural areas gathered together for the same reason.

Farm Radio Forum, a project full of vitality, was popular all across Canada, particularly in the farming areas where, at the time, most Canadians lived. A paper, Read, Listen, Discuss, Act by R.W. Sandwell of O.I.S.E. at University of Toronto, states that the radio forum was the “longest and most apparently successful listening group project in the world... one of the greatest adult educational movements of the time.”

The program ran during the winter months from 1941 to 1965. Small communities could register their interest and receive additional material to supplement what was presented on the radio. The people in the community would gather in someone’s home, a church basement, the schoolhouse or a community hall. Together they listened to the panel discussion or presentation that was arranged for that evening.

Topics ranged from agricultural policy, to food rationing in World War II, whether farm women should work away from the farm, what to do about low farm income, how to organize a labour or machinery pool, health insurance, school nurses and rural electrification.

The last one was a very important one as in the 40s most of rural Canada

The radios the groups used were powered by batteries, frequently a car battery.

Several questions were posed for the meeting to discuss. They broke into small groups and everyone was free to give his/her opinions. After a certain time limit a report was given to the secretary who wrote the highlights of the discussion on a special form.

These were mailed to headquarters where they were collated and a report given the next meeting at the end of the program. These reports went a long way to make rural people feel as though their ideas were important.

The idea for the program came from Orville Shugg who began a career in radio with the 15-minute CBC Farm Broadcast in 1939. The theme song,

For the 1941-42 season only part of Canada was included: Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes. The next year Western Canada joined in. The techniques of setting up the project were studied and used successfully in Ghana, India and France.

I found that information about Farm Forum was difficult to find primarily because the groups were not formally organized. There may have been a chairperson to call the meeting to order but no money was needed so there were no financial records. The secretary filled in only the form that was mailed in and no additional records were kept.

I did discover a few clues about local groups. In one record Mrs. Mansbridge of New Lowell was mentioned as a contact person, and also Mrs. Buckingham of R.R. 1, Collingwood.

Individuals told me there were Farm Forums in Everett and Honeywood.

Rockside, west of Duntroon, had a very active group with J. Allan Blair as secretary. Records show that Dunedin had a group for one year only. Lavender had a great deal of local interest with Les Davidson (Harold’s father) one of the leading figures. They did well to invite Bert Smith, editor of The Creemore Star, to attend a banquet they held in the basement of the church. He wrote a lengthy front page story that appeared April 9, 1942. Many speeches were given. Mrs. Brett commented that, “the forum had, through literature and broadcasts, provided interest and incentive to a thinking out of farm problems and possible solutions for them. The social atmosphere created

was an outstanding feature with the result that this phase of our community life had been much revived.”

Les Davidson concluded his speech with the words, “if a general civilization is to be maintained, a vigorous rural civilization is needed to provide leaven to the lump.”

Avening had a very enthusiastic group. It was from the Farm Forum that the idea of building Avening Community Hall was initiated. After some discussion Jack Rainbird, who was president at the time, led the beginning of the fundraising. He, Howard Noble, and Lorne Sutherland donated a sum of money as a nest egg.

From that beginning more money was raised with fundraising activities. (I detailed some of those in the account I wrote of Avening Hall in The Echo, fall of 2015.) Wallace Timmons (Dorothy Shropshire’s father) took a prominent role in the building of the hall. Now, of course, it is affectionately know as the ACC North.

Back to the Farm Forums of years ago. As soon as the discussion groups gave their reports out came the decks of cards. Euchre was next on the agenda.

This may sound like a frivolous activity but to my mind it was the most important part of the evening. It was community building.

The whole family attended the meetings, the children playing in another room while the adults laughed at a trumped play, discussed the evening’s topic or passed around news of people who were ill and needed help. Those were the ties that bound the neighbours together.

And lastly out came the scalding hot cups of tea, cream and sugar, piles of sandwiches often made with fresh homemade bread, cookies and luscious iced cakes. A complete and satisfying end to community building.

Local youth recognized for community involvement

Local students were presented the Collingwood Optimist Club’s Friends of Youth awards Jan. 20.

Thirty-three students from 16 area schools were recognized for their achievement of outstanding community involvement.

The club recognizes students from Collingwood, Wasaga Beach and Clearview Township who have been involved in their school, church, community club or sports team. The winners are chosen by teachers for showing commitment to community service and leadership ability.

Nottawasaga and Creemore Public School Grade 6 student Jocelyn Young is an active member of her school community and enjoys volunteering her time as a kindergarten helper, office helper, pizza helper, member of the tech team and the spirit squad.

Young enjoys school sports and has been a member of the volleyball team, basketball team and is currently a member of the hockey team. Outside of school, she plays hockey in the winter and baseball in the summer. This fall, she helped her father at the automotive display at the GNE on Education Day and competed in the junior ambassador contest, placing second. Young lives on a farm with her family and, during the summer, she sells cookies and produce from the garden with her brother at the Singhampton Farmers’ Market.

This past summer Young learned about lifesaving skills and first aid at swimming lessons. She recently

put these lessons into practice. While volunteering in the kindergarten classroom as a lunch helper, one of the students was choking on a grape tomato and Young calmly assessed the situation and alerted the teacher who was then able to perform the Heimlich Manoeuvre. Her quick thinking helped save that student’s life. Young is looking forward to participating in more leadership opportunities in the future and is very honoured to be recognized by the Optimist Club.

time she helps out in the kindergarten room. At most recesses she spends her time in the office completing tasks and helping answer the phone while the secretary is on her break. At school she participates in sports, clubs and the spirit squad. The spirit squad is a group of students and teachers who organize spirit days and schoolwide activities.

For example the “Thunder Games” which are teambuilding activities for the whole school. At recess she enjoys spending her time playing with the kindergarteners, leading games and helping them out on the yard. When she’s not at school she spends free time playing on the piano and playing outside. She also enjoys figure skating, at skating Libby loves to stay after her skating and PA. PA is when you assist the beginner skaters. She loves this because she can send her knowledge to them. Libby has lots of friends who she loves to encourage them with joyful thoughts and keeping them happy.

At the age of 15 he cycled 2,727 kilometres across the Maritimes into Ontario to raise awareness and funds for United Way. Continuing to volunteer in his community gives him a voice for the things he is passionate about. He also enjoys photography and videography.

Summers are spent in Bracebridge at a camp living in the outdoors and inspiring kids to become great photographers and filmmakers. Ayden is also an avid technology enthusiast.

Above all, Ayden loves his family and is an active member of his community.

Gobsmacked by BA BA Johnston left it all on the floor Saturday night.

Sweat, boogers, beer. All of it.

A shock-and-awe style performance left most people with sore cheeks (on their faces).

Johnston assaulted his audience with his wardrobe (tear-away pants and six layers of shirts, which once all removed revealed a belly that was then used as a percussion instrument) and those dance moves (jazz splits, high kicks and split jumps).

Audience members were caught up in his extra long microphone cord, which allowed him to work the room, body surfing on tables and forcing people to guzzle their beer. Anyone wearing a shirt with snaps was at risk of having it blasted open and anyone holding a cell phone was at risk of having it commandeered.

His antics confused the senses making it challenging to fully absorb the music’s social messages of healthy eating.

Siskins take on Caledon Hawks in playoffs

by Alex Hargrave Junior C hockey in the area was a barnburner last week with Huntsville Otters, Stayner Siskins and Midland Flyers jockeying for second to fourth place overall with the prize being home ice advantage during the playoffs.

First place wasn’t a contest. Alliston Hornets are the class of the league if not province and won the league easily with 73 points, 29 more than the second place team.

Last place Orillia Terriers knocked the Otters off Friday night 2-1 while Midland buried the Erin Shamrocks 9-5. This set the stage for Friday’s night game between the Otters and Flyers. Huntsville held a slim one-point lead in the standings over Midland and second place was at stake. The game was a doozy that went into a scoreless overtime and ended 5-5. The tie secured second overall for the Otters and they will now meet the seventh place Shamrocks in the playoffs first round. They were lucky though. The club was down 5-3 with less than seven minutes remaining in the game when Midland penalties allowed the Otters the man-advantage. The red light flickered twice in less than one minute, at 12:45 and 13:27. Game tied.

Despite Stayner out-shooting the Shamrocks by a wide margin Erin hung into the game to the dying moments. Fortunately for Stayner, Kyle Paulitziki scored with 52 seconds remaining to keep their attempt at third

place alive. Stayner’s other goals were scored by Lucas Jeffery, Brendon Skidmore (2), Matt Hayward and Sean Healy.

Stayner’s last regular season game was in Penetang against the sixth place Kings. The shots were close but the score certainly wasn’t.

Penetang won 5-1 which put the Siskins in the number four slot overall with a 18-7-5 record, one point behind Midland, 19-16-5, and two points back of Huntsville, 20-16-4.

Alliston finished first with a 35-2-3 record.

Stayner now gets to play the Caledon Golden Hawks in the first round of playoffs. The Golden Hawks, 17-203, finished fifth overall but had the better record against each other in their regular season games this season.

Caledon won the series 3-1-1.

Last night the first game of the playoff was played in Stayner.

Unfortunately, the outcome was not known by press time. Game 2 is slated for Saturday night in Caledon, 5 p.m. start. The series returns to Stayner Sunday beginning at noon. Game 4 is in Caledon, puck drops at 12. If other games are required they will be played Thursday in Stayner, back to Caledon Friday with the Game 7 being a real sweetheart of an affair, Feb. 14 in Stayner.

The other series’ are Alliston and Schomberg, 13-24-3; the Otters and Erin; and Midland – Penetang, 17-21-2,

renew their cross-town rivalry.

Winning the scoring championship was Midland’s Evan Buehler with 29 goals and 36 assists for 65 points.

Finishing second was Huntsville’s Andy Baker, 29 goals, 33 assists, 62 points.

Top Siskin was Ricky Darrell with a league leading 30 goals. He also added 29 assists for 59 points, third best in the league. Lucas Jeffery was the league’s 12 best scorer with 22 goals and 22 assists. Kyle Lafreniere also had a good year notching 15 goals and 20 assists. His 35 points was good enough for 20th overall. He only played 33 games.

Alliston was the top scoring team in the 40-game season with 206 goals, 50 more than Huntsville who had the second most. The Hornets also were far better than everyone else in giving up goals. They only allowed 60 goals during the season. The second best goals against was also held by the Otters with 134.

Obviously, based upon those numbers, it’ll be tough to beat Alliston.

But, one hot goalie, a couple of crazy bounces, and you just never know.

It should be a dandy of a series against Caledon... and you just never know.

New Lowell church lift now operational

by Sandra Bednarek There was loud clapping coming from the congregation of the New Lowell United Church as Nora Snow and Hilda Fenzau arrived at church and were able to be the first people to use the new elevator lift to enter the sanctuary. It is just lovely now that this 140-year-old building is accessible for all. Church services are at 9:45 a.m. every Sunday.

The family of Marg Duff helped her celebrate a milestone birthday on Sunday with a come-and-go afternoon party at the Presbyterian Church in Angus. Family and friends gathered with wishes, hugs and lots of memories to share with Marg. Now, Marg has a special day for her birthday it is Dec. 25 but this year the family decided to give her a special day of her own! Happy years to come Marg.

The New Lowell United Church is offering a pancake supper on Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall in the church. There will be a full pancake dinner with dessert and coffee/tea. The cost is $10 per adult, $5. Per child six and up and under six is free. This is a fundraiser for the church.

A good time, just before the beginning of Lent, to bring a friend or neighbour for a sweet dinner out right in the village.

New Lowell Public School parent council has been holding workshops this year to help parents with varied topics

In the fall there was a guest speaker that outlined an informative presentation on the importance of the internet and how it can help or hinder in your presentation for future careers. It was a great workshop for parents to learn about how to guide and watch their children become safe on the use of the internet.

On Feb. 1 the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit's Christine Tjeerdsma took us through all the steps of good bedtime routines for all ages (even an old gal like me learned something). It was a fantastic presentation that I am sure would have helped many parents with tips for all routines in the evenings and mornings with any age of child.

Sadly both of these workshops have not been well attended. In the fall there were about 20 adults in attendance and

this week there were six of us and two did not have school age children. From a school with over a 100 families that is not a very good average. I hope that for the future workshops that we will try to support your local parent council or perhaps ask them to schedule workshops on topics that you would like to be part of.

The weather sure has shown us it is very unpredictable and especially for early February with the mild days. Be very careful when walking as there still are very icy patches under all those puddles of water.

The Legion offers euchre on Wednesday afternoon for anyone who would like an afternoon of good fun and cards. It starts at 1 p.m. and from what I hear they have a very happy, chatty time.

There is also another day that seniors or really anyone that wishes to come to the New Lowell United Church on the first Tuesday of every month at 1 p.m. They are offering an afternoon of working on your craft, perhaps learning a new craft, or maybe just enjoying an afternoon out with a cup of tea and cookie. This will help beat the winter blahs. The next date is March 1.

The Sparks, Brownies and Guides will resume their meeting place at the United Church beginning on Feb. 16.

Cybergnomes demonstrate competitive robotics at spaghetti supper

Cybergnomes Robotics is hosting its annual Spaghetti Supper and Silent Auction Feb. 25 where people can see robots in action and take a test drive.

Starting in January, the Clearview Cybergnomes, a team of high school students from across Simcoe County, have been working on designing and building a robot to play in the international FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC).

For the past two years the Cybergnomes have made it to the World Championships in St. Louis. This fundraising event will help provide them with the resources needed to continue that success.

The 2016 game challenges students

to build a robot to breach a number of physical defenses in their opponent’s outer wall including a portcullis, drawbridge, sally port, moat, and rough terrain. The team must also launch boulders at their opponent’s castle, scoring hits and weakening its defenses. Rowbotham, Mary “Doreen”(nee Collins) We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Doreen Rowbotham on Friday, January 29, 2016. She was in her 84th year and resided at the Idlewyld Manor in Hamilton. She is finally reunited with her late husband, Earl Rowbotham.

Dear mother of Dale (Rose Rutherford), Susan Bowden and Paul. Fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Victoria and Zachary Rowbotham, Jessica and Andrew Bowden, Melinda and Rebecca Anderson and her many nieces, nephews and friends.
