Clearview explores youth services by Trina Berlo Clearview council is supporting an initiative tabled by Deputy Mayor Barry Burton that could result in a home for organizations that provide youth services. Councillors voted Oct. 26 to strike a new youth services committee to work out the details but the goal is to partner with existing organizations that provide youth services, establish a facility from which they can work and ultimately bring in mental health counselling and other services. “There are so many challenges facing the youth of today; peer pressure, bullying, mental health, social acceptance. These issues are even more prominent in smaller rural communities,” reported Burton. “It is important to provide a safe location where our youth can meet on a social level (drop-in centre) and have positive interaction with their peers. This location should also be able to provide adult guidance and mentorship along with mental health counselling.” Representatives from The Door, the United Way and RAY’s Place spoke in support of Burton’s proposal. The Door, a Christian youth centre in Stayner, has been looking for a new home since last year. Director Jen Gerrior was before council in February asking to partner with the municipality in the hope of finding a long-term home so youth feel they have a place to go. “Having a space shows them that they matter and that Clearview is willing to support them,” said Gerrior. The Door volunteer Tim Spence said he knows first hand there is a need for such services in the township. He told council he started to make poor decisions after his mother died when he was only 13. He said he struggled with addiction and mental (See “United” on page 8)

Public school extracurriculars cancelled The Simcoe County District School Board, along with most other affected school boards in the province, is postponing elementary progress reports and kindergarten conference forms, the board said Monday. The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) announced Oct. 22 teachers will no longer participate in any extracurricular activities as part of their work-to-rule job action. ETFO has informed teachers that unless significant progress is made at the provincial level, they may begin rotating one-day strikes. If rotating strikes are announced, parents and guardians will be kept informed through school communication, the website and social media. All SCDSB schools remain open for student learning, and all before- and after-school programs are operating as regularly scheduled. Staff photo: Trina Berlo

Children at Teddy Bear's Picnic were out trick-or-treating at local businesses Thursday.

Halloween comes to Creemore Local residents are warned there is an invasion expected Saturday night. Creatures of all sorts will be making their way from house to house starting at dusk. Homeowners are urged to open the door with caution and deposit a small treat into the visitors’ goodie bags. By all accounts, the visitors are expected to be relatively friendly and display good manners, but anything is possible. It is not known how long the invasion will last, so it is best to be well prepared by stocking up on sugary treats, high in corn syrup and food colouring. On Halloween night, all creatures big and small are invited to the Station on the Green in Creemore for the Monster Mash youth dance from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Warm up to some fun kid-friendly tunes, take part in activities and get some treats. NEC proposes adding lands in Clearview, Mulmur The Niagara Escarpment Commission has endorsed a list of potential additions, increasing its protected area by 23 per cent. Clearview and Mulmur Townships are among those impacted by the proposed changes. The NEC is eyeing almost 14,000 acres in Mulmur, including parts of Mansfield, and 10,655 acres in Clearview. Mulmur Mayor Paul Mills said the township is calling a meeting next month to discuss the possible changes with those affected. He said the additions could curtail development and have a tax impact. Both Simcoe and Dufferin county seats on the commission are currently vacant. The NEC is an agency of Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and works on behalf of the people of Ontario to preserve the Niagara Escarpment as a continuous natural landscape – a vital corridor of green space through south-central Ontario.
