Cashtown Corners development proceeding A building permit and site plan agreement was issued for the Cashtown Corners development Friday, said Lloyd Hunt, architect and agent. The property, which was the site of a derelict gas station, will be redeveloped to accommodate an Esso On the Run, gas bar and convenience store, and Tim Hortons. Tim Hortons will have eight seats and a drive-through. The gas bar will have four double starting gate style pumps, meaning each line feeds through one pump. A seasonal market is also allowed in the site plan agreement. If the weather cooperates, construction could begin this fall.

Christmas comes early to Creemore by Trina Berlo It was snowing last week in Creemore, but only at one intersection. The flurries were the result of a storm that blew into the village in the form of a film crew that was shooting a holiday television commercial for Interac at Cardboard Castles Children’s Emporium. Proprietress Laurie Copeland said she was approached by the executive producer of the commercial, who was familiar with the store, last month to see if she would allow them access to the store. Copeland agreed and a crew began rearranging the store beginning at closing time on Monday, Oct. 5. The shoot went until midnight on Tuesday. “It all came together very quickly,” she said. Copeland said she isn’t sure how recognizable the store will be in the commercial once it airs because the store was completely transformed.

at night and even decorated the pharmacy across the street with Christmas lights because it can be seen through the window in some shots. The commercial encourages people to pay for holiday purchases with Interac to avoid accumulating debt. The toys, including a large stuffed bear, start singing the word debt over and over to the tune of In the Hall of the Mountain King. The bear, said Copeland, was being operated like a large puppet, from under the table. The commercial was filmed in both English and French, so set changes were necessary to change any signs. “It was really fun to be a part of it. It was neat to see how it all comes together,” said Copeland. She said about 60 people were in town for the shoot and some of them stayed in local B&Bs and shopped at local businesses.
The 5th annual One-Stop Christmas Shop at Duntroon Hall is Friday, Nov. 13. The hall is looking for vendors for the event, which runs from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. A table costs $25. Set up begins at 9 a.m. Organizers are also looking for donations for the bake table and they will be selling chili, both meat and vegetarian, and hot drinks. Email thethreedees@sympatico.ca for more information or to book a table.
New hall board for Nottawa Council appointed five members to the Nottawa Hall board Oct. 5. Following a brief in-camera session at the start of the meeting, when the appointments were discussed behind closed doors, Anne Marie Hodgart, Shannon Robinson, Roger Robinson, Jason Whyte and Ray Zwarych were approved as board members. The Nottawa Memorial Community Centre has been without a board of directors since members resigned en masse in August. In a statement released at the time, hall board members said they were resigning because they felt disrespected and mistreated as a result of an unfair process, completed with no consultation, communication, notification or justification to other small hall boards or the taxpayer, that resulted in Avening Hall being allocated $110,000 in grant money.
