Heckler ejected from candidates' meeting by Trina Berlo It was three against one Sunday night as federal candidates faced off at an allcandidates meeting in Wasaga Beach. Candidates running for election in Simcoe-Grey agreed to disagree with the Harper government’s policies on everything from omnibus bills and the disposal of nuclear waste to the removal of the Nottawasaga River from the Navigable Waters Protection Act and Syrian refugees. The crowd of about 200 people was somewhat hostile towards Conservative candidate Kellie Leitch at times starting when man was escorted from the auditorium at the beginning of the meeting for heckling Leitch during her opening remarks. Opposition candidates disagreed with Conservative policies on secrecy around the negotiation of the transpacific partnership and supply management because of its adverse effect on Canadian farmers, doing away with the long-form census and accused Conservatives of fear mongering through the creation of Bill C-51, anti-terrorism legislation. Candidates for the Green Party, NDP and Liberals said their parties would support the creation of a pharmacare, a national program that would provide universal access to necessary prescription medicine, while Leitch said Conservatives have increased transfer payments to the provinces, who are responsible for health care. They also made a point of saying they would be full-time candidates. When asked to state their top three priorities Green Party candidate JoAnne Fleming said, ensuring natural resources are protected, electoral reform through proportional representation and implementing a (See “Voters” on page 11)

Dinner raises $10,000 in memory of Paul Millsap An event held in memory of Paul Millsap has raised $10,000 for the creation of an advanced cardiac program at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. Marie Stephenson, Vern Pawlech and Paul and Karen Crevier put together a gourmet dinner for about 160 people who attended the Sept. 18 event. Stephenson said organizers were able to raise so much money thanks to those in attendance, those who donated even though they couldn't attend and the generous sponsors who donated the food. Fundraising dinners have been held in the past for the Creemore Curling Club but because the event was in memory of Millsap, who died of a heart (See “Funds” on page 12)

The cost of rescuing a hiker trapped in a cave in June has been tallied at $45,831.29, said Clearview Township Fire Chief Colin Shewell. The man was extricated from a deep crevice cave at Nottawasaga Bluffs near Singhampton June 21 after being trapped for about 22 hours. Shewell said the cost “is a result of highly qualified individuals from three fire departments that worked as a team to achieve a positive outcome. This expense is to be covered by Clearview fire operating budget of 2015 and the Township of Clearview.” The cost includes equipment, apparatus and the wages of firefighters from Barrie and Toronto who performed the 16-hour technical rescue. “This rescue had a very positive end for a Clearview Township resident and his family from Glen Huron, every technical rescue or emergency call for service is reviewed and is based on its own merit,” said Shewell. “Clearview Fire and Emergency Services is committed to high quality, timely and professional service.”
