by Brad Holden The new Clearview Council will look mighty familiar when it begins its work in the New Year, with seven of its nine members re-elected Monday night, including Mayor Ken Ferguson and Deputy Mayor Alicia Savage. Earning seats on Council for the first time were Brent Preston, who defeated the incumbent Marc Royal by a resounding margin in Ward 3 (Dunedin), and Deb Bronee, who comfortably unseated the incumbent Roger McGillvray in Ward 6 (New Lowell). The closest vote of the night was in Ward 2 (Duntroon), where incumbent Orville Brown beat John Millar by a single vote. Millar has requested a recount, and the outgoing Council will vote on whether that will take place at its meeting on Monday, November 1. Municipal protocol says that if the vote is not a tie, it is up to Council to decide whether a recount is necessary. Should the recount go ahead, both Millar and Brown will be involved in the process. If the recount should result in a tie, a decision will be made by lot (either a cutting of cards or the drawing of names). The situation is reminiscent of the Mulmur Mayoral race in 2006, when the initial counting of the ballots gave Paul Mills a one-vote victory over Gord Montgomery. After Montgomery requested a recount, the outcome was actually reversed, with Montgomery becoming the Mayor with a one-vote margin. Those two men faced off again Monday night for the Mulmur Mayor position, and this time Mills came out clearly on top. His Council will be dramatically different than the previous one, with Rhonda Campbell

Moon moving up from Councillor to the Deputy Mayor position (defeating incumbent Susan Snider) and only one Councillor, Earl Hawkins, returning for another term. Speaking with the Echo, Mills called the new Mulmur Council a “dream team,” declaring that the results were a call for more transparency and accountability. In Clearview, Mayor Ferguson was ecstatic with the results, saying that stability was important with several big decisions lying ahead. “I worked harder than I ever have in my political career,” said Ferguson, who has sat on Council since 1994. “I talked to business people, I talked to the agricultural sector, and I stuck to what I believe in. We need jobs in Clearview and we need to support our farmers.” In Ward 4 (Creemore), incumbent Thom Paterson scored a decisive victory over challenger Michael Bennett. All across Clearview, voter turnout numbers were up, with the total percentage nearing 45. Last election, turnout was below 40 per cent. Caroline Smith, who has been working hard on Clearview-based Accomodation Review Committees for the past two years, was returned to the Simcoe County District School Board as the Collingwood/Clearview Trustee. Clearview’s outgoing Council will meet three more times in November, and the new Council will be inaugurated in January.
