Veteran takes seat for sixth time, but his party fails to beat Liberals in Ontario Thursday’s election results came in well past the Echo’s usual press time, but we were able to delay our deadline long enough to bring you the results of the provincial vote. As has been the case for the last eight years, the Liberals will govern us provincially while the Progressive Conservatives will represent us locally. UNOFFICAL RESULTS FOR SIMCOE-GREY (255/269 polls reporting) Jim Wilson, PC 20,782 (53.31%) Donna Kenwell, Liberal 8,832 (22.66%) David Matthews, NDP 5,807 (14.9%) Progressive Conservative MPP Jim Wilson, your Queen’s Park representative since 1990, won handily again on Thursday night.
A Call to all Bakers: It’s Apple Pie Contest Time!
The 4th annual Creemore Apple Pie Contest will take place at this weekend’s final Farmers’ Market of the year. Anyone who loves to bake is welcome to enter one pie, in a pie plate labelled with the baker’s name on the bottom, by 9:30 am at the contest booth. Pat Prime, Bill Mann, Cecily Ross, Linda Cockton and Al Clarke will nibble away and have the pies ranked by 11 am, when the winners will be announced. At that point, slices of all pies will be available by donation and all proceeds will go to a charity of the winner’s choice. This is a highlight of the Creemore fall calendar, so if you don’t enter a pie, be sure to be there to taste one!

BREWERY OMB BEGINS by Brad Holden The Ontario Municipal Board held a prehearing regarding the appeal of the Creemore Springs Brewery expansion on Wednesday, and by the end of the day all parties were booked for two days of OMB-led mediation in January. If a settlement is not reached then, the Board has booked a five-week hearing starting March 19, 2012. The day led with all parties identifying themselves; they are Paul Vorstermans and Christine and Austin Boake on the appellant’s side and Creemore Springs Brewery, Simcoe County and Clearview Township on the respondent’s side. Parties are able to present and cross-examine evidence at the hearing. Also identifying themselves were those wishing to be participants, who will be limited to making a statement about the application. Standing up were Rowland Fleming, Michael Bennett, David Huskinson and Corey Finkelstein for the expansion and Donald Boake, Roy Symes, Cheryl Robertson and Norma Panzine against the expansion. Brewery lawyer Marshall Greene told the Board that the parties were willing to mediate, but in order to schedule mediation, Board member M.C. Denhez undertook a confidential “mediation assessment” over the course of the day. Following that, Denhez booked January 10 and 11 as mediation days. Parties are scheduled to speak informally several times before that date as well.
Horses and Hounds
Another great fall tradition will happen quickly on Saturday, October 8 at 10 am. At that point, the Toronto and North York Hunt is due to parade their horses and hounds down Mill Street – always a thrilling few moments and not to be missed.
Dunedin Scarecrows
And finally, Dunedin’s finest autumn tradition will get going this week. The 4th annual Dunedin Scarecrow tradition will be accepting entries from now until Friday, October 28. Judging will take place on October 29, and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. This contest always results in some wacky scarecrows, so even a drive through Dunedin later on this month will be rewarding. To register your scarecrow, call Marcy at 705-466-3690.
