LAND AND WATER TOPIC OF DUNTROON CANDIDATES NIGHT
A COMFY SEAT! There’s nothing like the face of someone who’s sitting on his granddaughter’s 4-H steer
for a family photo, only to find out that the local newspaper photographer is also among those taking a picture. Don’t worry, we checked with several of Glenn Millsap’s family members and they all assured us he’d get a kick out of seeing this in the Echo. See plenty more GNE shenanigans on pages 6 and 7.
by Brad Holden The Nottawasaga Community Centre in Duntroon was the scene of the final all-candidates night for SimcoeGrey candidates before the October 6 provincial election, and this one had an interesting twist. Sponsored by a coalition of ratepayers organizations – the Simcoe County Federation of Agriculture, the Clearview Community Coalition, Aware Simcoe, the North Dufferin Agricultural and Community Task Force, Zero Waste Simcoe, Ontario Farmland Preservation and the Simcoe Solar Farm Awareness Project, all of whom have been fighting various battles over the last few years – the evening was themed “Land and Water in Crisis” and was broken down into four segments, one on growth and agriculture, one on aggregate production, one on the Green Energy Act and one on zero waste. One candidate, Mike Schreiner of the Green Party, was not able to attend because his party leadership duties had him on television commenting on the provincial leadership debate of the same evening. But he did appear on video for opening and closing comments, and debating in his place was Dufferin-Caledon Green (See “Environmental” on page 3)
PROVINCIAL CANDIDATES ON LOCAL ISSUES With the October 6 Ontario Election fast approaching, the Creemore Echo has sent all four Simcoe-Grey candidates a list of questions about what we feel are the most contentious provincial issues this area is dealing with. We began alphabetically last week with Liberal candidate Donna Kenwell and NDP candidate David Matthews. This week, we hear what Green candidate Mike Schreiner and Progressive Conservative candidate Jim Wilson have to say. By now, you should have received your voter’s card. Make special note of where you will be voting as some locations have changed this year. If you have not received a card, call 705-444-0514 to find out where your polling location is and show up with identification that shows your name and current address.
Mike Schreiner, Green
Mike Schreiner was elected leader of the Green Party of Ontario on November 14, 2009. A leading advocate for independent businesses and sustainable communities, Mike Schreiner is well known for his leadership in co-founding the award-winning Local Food Plus organization and brings a proven track record in business and leadership roles to the GPO. Actively involved in the Green Party of Ontario (GPO) for the past six years, Mike Schreiner was most recently the GPO candidate for the HaliburtonKawartha Lakes-Brock by-election. Mike co-chaired the 2007 election platform committee for the party (See “Green” on page 8)
Jim Wilson, PC
Jim Wilson was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in September 1990. His strength as an advocate was revealed after his first election when he became well-known across Ontario for his fight to expand dialysis treatment, which resulted in the establishment of satellite clinics in Collingwood and Alliston. Jim has been involved in several recent local projects, including: helping to restore birthing services at Stevenson Memorial Hospital, fighting to re-start the Highway 26 re-development from Stayner to Collingwood, approving the last major expansion of (See “PC” on page 10)
