BRAVES TRIUMPHANT AT PROVINCIALS

by Brad Holden For the first time since 1996, the Creemore Braves can call themselves provincial champions, after winning the All-Ontario Senior “B” OBA Championship at Strathroy last weekend. The win at the three-day tournament is extra special for this group of players for two reasons; first, it erased the bitterness of losing the semi-finals of the North (See “Braves” on page 16) At left, the 2010 Ontario Senior “B” Champion Creemore Braves. Back row: Andy Vander Heyden (coach), Brad Soules, Marc Dupuis, Rob Perkins, Steve Westbrooke, Garnett Walker, Glenn Patterson, Ryan Wenger (scorekeeper), Sean Ellis, Jason Thompson, Pete Kinghan (manager). Middle row: Darryl Fremlin, Ryan Bartley, Tom Gateman, Chris Greer, Jeff Akitt, Curt Barrett, Robert Kinghan, Matt Baldry, Todd Gowan. Front row: Bryan Post, Brad Grieveson. Absent from the photo, though both played on the first and second days of the tournament: Dan Gowan, Brett Trott.

AND THEY’RE OFF A knight to replace missing soldiers by Brad Holden With the September 10 deadline for filing nominations now come and gone (though it did pass after this newspaper’s deadline so things may have changed slightly), you can expect the municipal election campaign to start heating up next week. In Clearview Township, as of Thursday morning, 21 people had signalled their intent to run for nine seats. The most recent addition to the list is Michael Bennett, who is now challenging Thom Paterson for the Ward 4 Creemore seat. In Mulmur Township, there’s to be a rematch of the Mayoral race of 2006, in which Gord Montgomery beat Paul Mills by one vote, an outcome decided after a tense recount. With both municipalities using the mail-in vote system, ballots will be sent out to the public during the week of September 28. It’s important to remember, however, that they are not due back until October 25, and there will be many opportunities to learn about the candidates during the intervening weeks. The Creemore Echo will be publishing a special issue on Friday, October 1, featuring profiles of the candidates, and is planning an all-candidates event for the Ward 3, 4, Mayor and Deputy Mayor races for the afternoon of Sunday, October 3 at the Creemore Arena Hall. For a complete list of candidates, see page 3.

Creemore has a new piece of public art this week, albeit a piece with wheels on the bottom so it can be taken indoors at night. On Wednesday, local sculptor David Bruce Johnson presented the piece to Laurie Copeland of Cardboard Castles. The sculpture, of a little boy dressed in a cape with a strainer for a helmet and a pot lid for a shield, will sit outside Copeland’s store at Mill and Caroline Streets for pedestrians to enjoy. Johnson first approached Copeland after the two toy soldiers that traditionally stood outside the Cardboard Castles door were stolen two years ago. Initially he wondered if she’d like to to replace the soldiers, until Copeland showed him some of the original concept sketches she’d done in preparing to open the store, including one of the little boy. Wood for the sculpture came from a tree that was cut down on the property of Richard and Miriam Vince, and was transported to Johnson’s studio by Bob Ransier. Helping Johnson and Copeland unveil the boy (at right) for the first time was Charlee Akehurst, a loyal customer of Copeland’s. Serving Mulmur & The Creemore Hills for 34 years
