SHOVEL IN THE GROUND FOR “MILLER’S DAIRY”
Creemore dairy farmer John Miller had several folks helping him out at Wednesday’s shovel ceremony for his on-farm milk processing facility. From left to right are Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop, Wasaga Beach Mayor and Simcoe County Warden Cal Patterson, John Miller, Marie Miller, Shawn Corbeil, Clearview Township Mayor Ken Ferguson, Simcoe-Grey MPP Jim Wilson, dairy consultant Rick Hayward, Dairy Farmers Ontario marketing director Dave Nolan and future Miller’s Dairy plant manager Dwight Bryan.
by Brad Holden Creemore dairy farmer John Miller planted a shovel in the ground Wednesday in the spot where he plans to build an on-farm Jersey milk production facility, the first of its kind in Ontario. On hand to witness the event were nearly 200 people, including dignitaries, future vendors, area farmers and interested community members. As the shovel hit the dirt, he quoted a phrase that can be seen on the wall of his office: “It takes a dream to build a future.” Earlier, under a large tent to shield the crowd from the bright sun, he spoke a little bit about the path that brought him to this day: of the time in 2008 that he heard at a milk committee meeting about Dairy Farmers Ontario’s wish to have one of its members take on a pilot project of this type, and how he came home and mentioned his interest to his wife Marie, who told him he was “nuts;” of his conversations with former ad man Paul Breithaupt, a Creemore resident who encouraged him to take (See “Local” on page 3)
No banners without study by Brad Holden The Creemore BIA’s plan to hang banners from the existing hardware left on Mill Street’s hydro poles by the Olympic celebrations has hit a snag. Collus, who owns the poles, says it requires a $3,500 engineering study before any more banners are hung. That amount came to Council last night, the question being whether the Township should cover the cost or whether it should come from the BIA’s budget. The eventual decision was to put the amount in next year’s Township budget for consideration, but two
Councillors – Robert Walker and Deb Bronée – voted the other way, stating that the BIA should pay for the study itself. Several Councillors stated their disappointment that Collus is requiring this study despite the fact that the hardware is in place and banners have already been hung there, but public works director Richard Spraggs reminded them that Collus employees had hung the banners themselves before the torch relay. The threat of electrocution might exist for BIA members doing the same job. (See “Council” on page 8)
