Glen Huron man pulled from cave by Trina Berlo Jamie Murray is very grateful for the miracle that has allowed her family to be together. Her husband Seth Rowe, although sore and stiff, is recovering at home in Glen Huron this week after a harrowing experience that almost cost him his life. The 30-year-old man was extricated from a deep crevice cave Sunday after being trapped for about 22 hours. “He’s healing, he’s doing okay,” said Murray. Clearview Fire and Emergency Services aided in a complex and technical overnight rescue on the weekend at Nottawasaga Bluffs Conservation Area, near Singhampton, where Rowe was trapped. The call came in at 8:22 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 and Rowe was not extricated from the crevice until the next morning, after a 14-hour rescue effort that involved rescuers from fire departments in Barrie and Toronto. Rowe, an avid outdoorsman and hiker, was alone at the conservation area when he became trapped in the cave. He had a cell phone but couldn’t get a signal. Luckily, he was able to yell out to people when he heard others in the area and they called his wife, who then called 911. Murray had been worried about her husband that day and had even gone to the park to look for him when he

Developments approved Site plans have been approved for the development of Cashtown Corners and Creemore Springs Brewery. Clearview planner Rossalyn Workman reported to council June 22 that all is in order to proceed with the construction of an Esso On the Run gas station and convenience store, Tim Hortons, seasonal market and associated retail. The approval is conditional upon written confirmation that all wells to be abandoned have been properly decommissioned. Creemore Springs Brewery was also given the go-ahead for its outdoor patio as part of its new retail store and tasting bar.

The 49th annual Duntroon to Stayner Road Race will be held on Canada Day. Participants are to register at Duntroon Public School beginning at 8 a.m. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at the Stayner Community Centre. In April, the court upheld a lower court decision that reciting Catholic prayers at council meetings in Saguenay, Quebec was a violation of religious rights after complaints from an atheist who attended meetings. Council members have voted against the clerk’s recommendation to remove the allocated time for members of the

faith community. Officials say, the practice of praying before council has not yet been called into question by any of the citizens of Clearview Township. A June 1 vote was deferred to give the Ministerial Association a chance to respond. The association’s secretary Rob Harwood made a presentation Monday to council members and supporters (See “Council” on page 10)

Rescuers, community rallied in team effort to save Rowe (Continued from page 1) and blankets to the site but it didn’t take long to realize that the situation was serious and rescuers would need to be called. Friends did rush to the scene, as did Murray. Rescuers had to chisel their way to the man who was 12 metres (about 40 feet) below ground level. The rescuer that was sent down into the cave was a very small firefighter from Toronto and his coveralls were duct taped to make them as tight as possible so he could get through, said Clearview Fire Chief Colin Shewell. “Really it was an eight-inch crack that this gentleman was in and he wasn’t straight down. He was down and over 20 feet,” he said. In the cave, it is quite cold and there’s still snow. Crews used heaters and tubes to pump warm air into the space and they also managed to send in blankets, food and water. Rescuers could not see the man from the top of the crevice and there was limited communication with the patient. “It was a very long 14-hour process,” said Murray. “When they did pull him out, he was sore, scraped and a bit out of it.” Rowe was transported to the hospital to be assessed for injuries. There was nothing major but he did have slight hypothermia. “It’s honestly, literally a miracle,” said Murray.

Their daughter picked flowers and presented them to Shewell earlier this week as a thankyou to all of the rescuers. “She’s really happy to have her daddy home, she told him, no more holes,” said Murray.

Shewell said the rescue was successful due to a team effort. “The Incident Command Structure worked exceptionally well with multiple agencies working together to affect the rescue under one unified command,” said Shewell. “Clearview Fire, Barrie Fire, Toronto Fire, Simcoe County Paramedic Services and Ontario Provincial Police used a team effort towards a successful outcome in an extremely challenging rescue situation.” Several local residents and businesses also pitched in. Bill Leimgardt, one local firefighter’s father, contributed two ATVs to the effort. Stayner Tim Hortons provided hot beverages and food to about 50 rescue workers on site and Stayner Rental opened in the middle of the night to make equipment available. Crews used the business’ hoses, tools, chisels and heaters. Shewell said The Ontario Mine Rescue Team was also called, but was stood down.

On Saturday, June 20 our lives could have changed forever, and it is because large number of people that we can continue on living life as a family. After receiving a call from complete strangers that they had found my husband Seth Rowe down a cave in the Nottawasaga Bluffs area, things started to move faster than I can almost comprehend. We would like to thank everyone involved in the miraculous rescue of Seth. Thank you to Gilbert Mcinnis and Yolanda Gallo for walking by at just the right moment and hearing Seth’s call for help. Thank you to The Clearview Fire Department, Barrie Fire and Rescue, Toronto Fire and County of Simcoe Paramedic Services. There was much behind the scenes that I would like to thank as well. Thank you to: the local community for the quick effort and support, Abby Parks and the Leimgardts for taking care of our children until Nana and Papa could come pick them up. Thank you to the local Singhampton firefighters for bringing in their own personal equipment to use on scene. Thank you to Stayner Rental for opening their doors in the middle of the night and providing heaters, drills and many other things. Thank you to Tim Hortons of Stayner for providing everyone with food and drinks. Thank you to anyone that was involved that I am missing. It has been a whirlwind of events since Saturday evening and no amount of thank yous will ever cover what we as a family are experiencing right now. We are truly blessed to have such an amazing community and outreach.

Scoreboard has to change Earlier this month, a visitor to Creemore posted this message on The Creemore Echo’s Facebook page: “Dear Creemore, This past weekend I visited your lovely town for an art opening. I took a little walk afterwards and ended up at your baseball diamond. There I saw and learned of your team “Home of the Braves” with the mascot. I am shocked. In the spirit of The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, I implore you as a community to replace this archaic and destructive misrepresentation with something truly honorable. I understand you are hosting an event this weekend to mark National Aboriginal Day. Good Luck!” It’s true. While Ojibway author Drew Hayden Taylor was reading at an event at Station on the Green Sunday, the scoreboard at the ball diamond prominently displays the home team’s logo, a red-faced caricature of a Native person wearing a feathered cap and a big toothy smile. Full disclosure: The Creemore Echo paid to have the scoreboard replaced a decade ago so we too are culpable. It is time for the insensitive and offensive logo to go. It is relevant to a debate that is raging throughout North America. The Washington Redskins football team faces constant pressure to change its name. Fans protest, even the United States senate has called for a name change. The owner refuses, citing tradition. This year, the City of Calgary began reviewing the names of all teams that play on municipal property under its respectful workplace policy. And just this week, Buffalo city council voted unanimously to change the name of Squaw Island near Buffalo to Unity Island. According to the Associated Press, the name of the island was changed as a result of lobbying effort led by two Native American women. “When a group of people feels offended, somebody should at least listen,” said Buffalo councillor Darius Pridgen. This debate is not new but it needs to take place at the local level, too. Surely the Creemore Braves, a North Dufferin Baseball League team, would consider a change to reflect the cultural sensitivities that exist in Creemore and Clearview Township as a whole. At the very least it needs to do away with the offensive logo. As addressed in the other cases noted, just a few examples of campaigns for change, when people are offended, we must listen and make changes accordingly. So yes, in the spirit of truth and reconciliation beyond residential schools, we need to keep the momentum of change. Since we sponsored the scoreboard, we would be happy to pay for and facilitate the replacement of the sign.

Join an adventure in singing by Billie Power We came, we saw, we conquered. Who came? Why, the Creemore Treblemakers came. Their first concert was June 18 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Luke’s Anglican Church. The concert was well attended. Guests enjoyed a repertoire ranging from an oldie, the upbeat Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oh, What a Beautiful Morning, to the much more recent poignancy of Eric Clapton’s Tears in Heaven. The choir has been under the leadership of Penelope Dale, assisted fantastically by her husband Richard Maddock on the piano. Here are just a few facts form their biographies; Penelope is a classically trained Soprano. Her voice has been heard in opera, film, live radio broadcasts, also in musical theater. Richard is a composer, arranger, recording engineer and accompanist. He began his professional career as a ballet class accompanist at the age of 14. His music is now used in dance studios in over 70 countries. Creemore has been fortunate in having people of their calibre willing to come here and develop a Creemore community choir. Doesn’t that sound exciting? Creemore’s very own choir. In a personal way, joining the choir was one of the best things I’ve done for myself. I have never been a part of a formal choir before, although I have always loved to sing. It had been eons since I picked up a smattering of singing in parts and reading music. So singing with the Treblemakers was a stretch. But with Penelope,

you not only learn to sing properly, she makes it fun. What a joy it was to get to know the other members of our special group. I would like to thank them for their hard work, dedication and friendship. Penelope conducts groups in Toronto, Wasaga Beach, and Creemore. She is offered to lead a summer session in Wasaga Beach and Creemore. Creemore dates: on Thursdays from July 9 to August 20. Penelope has lots of eager participants at the beach, but not enough to go forward in Creemore. What a shame to miss this opportunity. The people who have shown interest in the Creemore group have been given the opportunity to join the Wasaga Beach group however, for those people, travel and work considerations, etc. make this impractical, if not impossible. To be a part of Wasaga at certain times i.e., singing in a mass choir will be great. But my allegiance is to Creemore and I want to be an official member of the Creemore Treblemakers. Wouldn’t you? This then is my appeal to all the super singers in this area, give Penelope a call at 705-352-4595 and sign up for the summer singing course. I know, the beach beckons but we are talking of only one-and-half-hours of your time per week. Come for the singing. Come for the culture. Come for the education. Come for the friends, fellowship and fun. Come for the adventure. Hanging on to Penelope’s coattails you never know where you’ll end up. Until I see you at practice on July 9… do re mi fa so la ti do.

Book profiles 10 local residents in words, portraits by Trina Berlo The stories and portraits of 10 lifelong area residents are being compiled in a book to be published in the fall, entitled The Village and I: Ten Life Stories. The collection portrays an earlier time in the village, when family and community were paramount, trips into the village from outlying hamlets were a big deal and winters were brutal. The book is a result of a $5,000 Robert F. Kemp Award given to portrait artist Sara Sniderhan last year through the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts, with additional support from the Purple Hills Arts and Heritage Society and The Creemore Echo. The book is being published by Curiosity House Books; owner Rina Barone is the editor. Sniderhan said the project is about documenting the stories of a certain generation who she thinks of as having seen more change in their lifetime than any other generation before them and possibly after them. “It’s a way of collecting community history and life experiences that are no longer very relatable,” she said. The book includes the life stories of Maurice Weatherall, Donna (Millsap) Lowe, Gerry Blackburn, Noel Van Walleghan, Helen Blackburn, Gertie Gowan, Dorothy (Timmons) Shropshire, Jerry Jordan and the Rowbotham sisters; Barb Cudmore and Norma Johnston. “It was hard to chose just 10,” said Sniderhan. “There are lots more people who should have been in the book but we had more potential subjects than we could have put in the book and a limited budget.” She said she feels at some point there will have to be a second volume

Council takes inclusive approach after court ruling

He urged council to be inclusive in its decision about the practice, rather than risk isolating members of the community. He noted, in Saguenay, the Catholic prayer was forced through a bylaw, despite complaints. Councillor Thom Paterson said the conundrum is, how to continue the practice without showing favour to one faith? He said the court ruling makes reference to religious neutrality in the public sphere, without giving prevalence to religion or atheism. There was discussion about how specific to be about faith groups. The original motion included wiccans, atheists, Buddhists and Muslims but councillors decided to leave it open ended.

Firefighters get Enbridge grant for training Clearview Fire and Emergency Services has received a $5,000 donation from Enbridge Gas for firefighter training through Project Assist. Project Assist is a program that supplements existing training for Ontario fire departments in the communities where Enbridge operates. “This is an excellent opportunity to enhance our resources for training and continue to develop our frontline firefighters. This funding will enable

the firefighter’s access to the most upto-date educational material and will assist us to continue our exceptional service to our residents and visitors in our community,” said Clearview Township Fire Chief Colin Shewell. Tin Roof Global gets federal funding 3RD LINE E MULMUR

The Creemore-based NGO received $12,000 through the Science Horizons and $76,500 through the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada PromoScience Fund. The $12,000 will be used to pay an intern to work in Temagami First Nation, educating school aged First Nations youth about water science. The aim of the project is to develop professional and study skills among high school graduates from First Nations communities. The $76,500 is to be disbursed over the next three years, to support future work with indigenous communities experiencing water challenges across Canada.

Mills manages laundry 'blow-ups' at Argos camp by Fred Mills I returned to the Toronto Argonauts Training Camp at York University again, this time for the full three weeks. I helped the equipment staff, including manager Danny Webb, the longest Argonaut employee with 30 years, assistant manager Tom Bryce and assistants David Sillberg and Mathew Wheatle. I was again the manager of laundry for more than 120 players, coaches, scouts and staff. The five of us helped each other anytime it was needed. A day consisted of breakfast at 6 a.m. Tom or I would check the coaches and scouts floor, where there was a bin placed and they would put their laundry bags in the bin. We would bring it down in a travel bag and put it in the Kubota. After breakfast, I would go to the trainer’s room to collect their laundry (towels from treatments or trainers' clothing – 10 of them in total). Afterward, we headed to the stadium with the first wave of trainers, where I started the final load of towels that were left, as well as any coaches', trainers' or staff bags that needed to be done. I then would finish folding the remainder of the towels with help from the rest of the equipment staff. All practice clothing for players (shorts, T-shirts, socks, etc.) and any clothing staff, coaches and scouts would use are in mesh bags. As the players come in to get ready for practice, some clothes can go missing from the bag because it “blew up” (meaning the zipper ripped or the bag wasn’t done up all the way). As the manager of laundry, I would be required to remember what bag had “blown up” and I would have it put aside to make it easier and quicker to find. Practice started at 7:30 a.m. After all the locker rooms were emptied, I would reorganize the chairs in front of the lockers, pick up any athletic tape and

hang their mesh bags on their hooks to make the rooms look nice and clean. I would then place a towel in each of their lockers – 88-plus in total. Then, it was time to head out to the field and help and or watch the practice or help. I helped with the yards sticks and Down Marker (even though it was taller than me) during practices along with anything else that needed to be done. With 10 minutes left in the practice, I would unlock the locker rooms and get ready for the onslaught of laundry. I quickly went between the three locker rooms on two floors to separate the white jerseys (defence) from the blue jerseys (offence), as well as bags and towels, into four bins. I got the washer spinning, with a load of bags as they took the longest to dry. Being a part of the Argos and on the equipment staff is all about teamwork. I would like to thank Danny Webb and the rest of the equipment staff and the Toronto Argonauts for letting me come back and help out, I would also like to thank my incredible bosses at The Creemore Echo for letting me go for the three weeks.

The Cybergnomes welcomed a new generation of engineers to the first meeting of their new Lego Club at the Stayner Community Centre June 18. Children built balloon-propelled cars before racing them. Below: Afterwards, they were treated to a demonstration of the Cybergnomes' robot which they enter into international competitions.
