ELECTION TAKES SHAPE Mayor, most of Council file nomination papers
by Brad Holden The 2010 municipal election picture took a sudden turn toward clarity this week, with Mayor Ken Ferguson, Deputy Mayor Alicia Savage and five Councillors all filing for re-election on the same day. A sixth, Roger McGillvray, had filed a few days earlier, before heading away on holidays and after consulting with the Mayor. The fact that so many members of the current Council filed together, said Ferguson and Savage, is a clear indication that the team wishes to remain intact and finish several initiatives together. “You need two terms to finish what you started,” the Mayor told the Echo after Monday night’s Council meeting.
But one term into his mayoral career, Ferguson has spent the past few months struggling to decide whether to run again for personal reasons – his wife Cheryl has been battling brain cancer since last winter. But over the course of last weekend, Ferguson said he and his family came to the decision that he should try for one more term. “The main thing is providing stability,” he said. “I truly believe that this is Clearview’s time, and the most important thing we need right now is stable government.” Once his decision was made on Sunday night, Ferguson sent an email to his fellow Councillors, and when he arrived at the Township office to file his papers Monday morning he was joined by Deputy Mayor Alicia Savage and Councillors Doug Measures (Ward (See “Incumbent” on page 3)

“LAW AND ORDER” AT THE MARKET Last Saturday’s Farmers’ Market
was a soggy affair, but that didn’t stop Calvin Kersten from making the rounds on his highway patrol bike, “making arrests.” Calvin is the grandson of Kathy and Paul Belcourt.

Prestigious award for Raibles
The Ontario Historical Society’s Cruikshank Medal is presented, on rare occasions, to individuals who have performed with distinction in furthering the Society’s mission. On June 12, the OHS recognized Creemore residents Pat and Chris Raible for their long time service to the Society, to many other heritage organizations and to the study and promotion of Ontario’s history generally. Here is some of what was said in the organization’s press release: “The Raibles first began volunteering for the OHS more than 20 years ago,
actively promoting OHS programs, publications and memberships at historical events and genealogical conferences across the province. “In March 1993 the Raibles became co-editors of the OHS Bulletin’s “From the Bookshelf” feature. Pat, as a librarian and Chris, as an historian, had all the necessary skills to keep the OHS membership well-informed about the latest books, periodicals and other resources of interest to the readers of the OHS Bulletin.” (See “Raibles” on page 3)
This week we’ll see the transition of spring to summer, which means several things. First, the St. Luke’s Anglican Church will hold its annual Summer Solstice service on Monday, June 21 at 6 pm, and second, it’s time for Strawberry Suppers! Knox Presbyterian in Dunedin will hold theirs on Saturday, June 19, and Jubilee Presbyterian in Stayner on Friday, June 25. See the Calendar on page 3 for more information.
The Consolidated Hearing on the Duntroon quarry continued this week with Walker Aggregates presenting its case with regard to traffic issues and the Adaptive Management Plan, which is intended to monitor the protection and management of water, flora and fauna on the site. A “living document” that would be updated regularly over the life of the quarry, the AMP would be legally enforceable under the auspices of the Ministry of Natural Resources. Testimony continues next week.
