CREEMORE TREE COMMITTEE PONDERS FUTURE Public meeting June 20 to discuss options
PLANTS FROM THOSE WHO KNOW Members of the Creemore Horticultural Society – including Norah Mills, Cathy Sumner and Sherry Wilson – have been hard at work this week preparing for the Hort’s annual Perennial Plant Sale, being held on Saturday, June 5 from 9 am to 1 pm at St. John’s United Church. The plants for sale have been culled from members’ gardens as well as the Horticultural Park. All proceeds will go toward extending the Hort Park’s new aluminum fence down the border it shares with the Foodland parking lot.

OMB Hearings Continue
Summer-like weather has not stopped the OMB from going about its business. In Creemore, the Consolidated Board Hearing looking into the Duntroon quarry expansion continued, with Walker Aggregates presenting evidence from its natural heritage expert and the Niagara Escarpment Commission cross-examining the same witness. Meanwhile, a second OMB hearing dealing with the MacIntosh development in Creemore got underway in Stayner. To read more about that hearing, see next week’s Creemore Echo.
by Brad Holden An inevitable leadership void combined with some surprise news from Clearview Township has led the 20-year-old Creemore Tree Committee to take a hard look at its future. On Sunday, June 20, it will hold a meeting to look for input from the public on the various options put forward at this time. As has been reported in previous weeks in the Echo, longtime Tree Committee volunteers Diane McKay and Brian McKay have decided to resign as Chair and Plaque Curator/Tree Lighting Coordinator so they can focus on health issues. Catherine Sumner has also resigned as Secretary. Coincidentally, these decisions came at the same time as the CTC received some unexpected news from Clearview Township. The CTC was originally formed in 1990 and for its first four years operated under the umbrella of the Corporation of the Village of Creemore. All trees (See “CTC” on page 3)
Creemore History on Foot
The Purple Hills Arts & Heritage Society will present “Pathways to the Past,” a walking tour of the history of Creemore on Sunday, June 6, departing Station on the Green at 1 pm. Chris Raible, Pat Raible, Don McPherson, Gail Caswell, Paul Vorstermans and Helen Blackburn will give talks at selected locations in town, reflecting five phases of the village’s history – the arrival of the Petuns and Samuel de Champlain, the founding of the mills, the establishment of a school, the coming of the railway and modern commercial development. Tickets for the walk are $10, available at Curiosity House or the Market coffee booth.
