Nottawa set to Grow Official Plan Amended despite concerns from Ward 3 and 4 Councillors
By Sara Hershoff An amendment to the Official Plan was made at last Monday’s council meeting. The amendment re-designates lands within the Nottawa settlement area from Rural, Residential and Greenland Hazard-land to Rural, Residential and Greenland Natural Heritage Area, modifies the Land Use and Transportation Plan on the affected land and sets special policies applicable to the character, design and development of the subject lands. Prior to the passing of this amendment Councillor Thom Paterson motioned to table OPA No. 10 “until the Municipality, and in particular Council, has all necessary information.” He stated the intent of his motion was “to have Council take the time to ensure that the existing taxpayers of Nottawa benefit equally from the new residential growth by having full municipal services made available to these existing households at the same time.” This is what he referred to as “good growth.” Paterson felt without a servicing agreement with the Municipality of Collingwood and an approved draft subdivision agreement “this important growth decision” should be deferred. The motion stated that “any significant residential development applications going forward should be subject to a comprehensive review of our Growth Plan to ensure that this municipality can provide good faith assurances that projects will proceed in compliance with provincial policies and guidelines” Planning Director Michael Wynia responded to the concerns shared by (See “concerns dismissed” page 3)

Family Fun in Singhampton Our much anticipated winter long weekend is finally here and across our region people are getting ready to celebrate all things family. In Singhampton, participants of Monday’s Family Day Skate will also be celebrating the tremendous community effort which has transformed a small outdoor rink into a community hub. Last winter a number of Singhampton volunteer firefighters got together in search of a Zamboni – a task that may seem daunting and, well, a little expensive. When the firefighters heard there was a Zamboni coming up for auction in Collingwood they were there with their winning low-ball bid of $500. The Zamboni, which sleeps in a semi-secret hideaway, has been well used ever since, over 30 times in the month of January alone, and has inspired several improvements to the rink. Other upgrades to the outdoor
rink, which was previously a tennis court, include a surface expansion (making it just shy of regulation size), the addition of bleachers for spectators and weary skaters and six new lights, replacing two archaic lights dating back to 1970. On February 5 a three-on-three hockey tournament at the Singhampton rink drew over 200 people and raised much needed funds. This Family Day Monday volunteers hope there will be an equally impressive showing at the Family Day Skate. Festivities begin late morning with a barbeque and hot bevies offered up for lunch. And for those with the stamina to hang around the skate will likely evolve into an informal game of shinny. Payment for the skate and for food and drink is by donation and every little bit helps. All donations go toward the ice surface, the Zamboni, and hydro.
